Seeing his audition, he really was very awkward and I can see why they thought he wasn't right for the part. Thankfully he seemed to get a feel for the part somewhere between his audition and the actual filming and nailed it when it came to actually filming.
They hated him even before he did those tests, they straight up hated the casting choice, 'cause he was short and not a big star. He went to those trials knowing he was unwanted and so had an attitude of something like "fuck this shit they'll hate me anyway". And yeah, it shows in these trials.
Or...is Michael the perfect Pacino? lol Because Michael could play or be an actor, the real Al Pacino could never be a killer. He's very sensitive in real life.
Marc Vince Michael Corleone was sensitive too. My interpretation of his character in the novel and films was that he changed as he took the actions that he believed circumstances compelled.
Al Pacino knows how to make the idea he sees in his head of who the character is come out of his eyes, hands, face, body, voice. He is a consummate actor. And Diane Keaton has the same gift. Which is the reason they were perfect together. They both are very old spirits.

It is the typical mentality of a studio executive to want a "name", a "bankable" movie star. They are business people, bean counters; they don't know anything about casting a movie.
@Kris B: Pacino was an unknown but he had acting credits, mostly in the theater. And Coppola wanted him. Why did they hire Coppola if they had no confidence in his judgment? The studio bosses are too rich to be hurt by a bad movie. ("Love Story", released the previous year and a huge success, had gotten Paramount out of trouble.) If they get fired, they take their severance package (in the millions) and retire or work for another studio, like the executives of any big business. Do you actually believe that Ryan O'Neal or Robert Redford would have been convincing as a person of Sicilian descent?
"il padrino" credo che sia il film più bello di sempre ... poi amo AL PACINO😍, è bellissimo anche ora all'età di 74 anni lo amoooooo TI AMO AL 💖💖💖😢😢😢😍💋💋
Robert Redford as italian??? OMG they really could have mess the whole movie like that. Good thing that Coppola insisted on Pacino and ignored the "stars" the executives thought about
eh. they made James Caan Italian and they made Marlon Brando look like the quintessential Italian. I agree Redford would've been a bad casting, but I don't think it's too out of the realm of imagination to suggest he's Italian
Apart from in the third one. As she aged she resembled less of what I imagined an older Kay would be like visually & personality-wise, and it didn't help that her and Al weren't getting along for the third film. But I agree she was one of the unsung heroes of the first two.

agreed.
Al Pacino was perfect as Michael, and James Caan was perfect as Sonny. Two gorgeous men! 😍
"il padrino" credo che sia il film più bello di sempre ... poi amo AL PACINO😍, è bellissimo anche ora all'età di 74 anni lo amoooooo
TI AMO AL 💖💖💖😢😢😢😍💋💋
You can see Diane was more comfortable with Al 💝
Robert Redford as italian??? OMG they really could have mess the whole movie like that. Good thing that Coppola insisted on Pacino and ignored the "stars" the executives thought about
eh. they made James Caan Italian and they made Marlon Brando look like the quintessential Italian. I agree Redford would've been a bad casting, but I don't think it's too out of the realm of imagination to suggest he's Italian
He got a pretty dark sun tan for Butch and the Sundance Kid.
Imagine Orson Welles for Vito. That was an actual possibility
HIS EYES AW
Whatever the case with Al and "Michael", Diane Keaton was perfect for "Kay" .....
Apart from in the third one. As she aged she resembled less of what I imagined an older Kay would be like visually & personality-wise, and it didn't help that her and Al weren't getting along for the third film.
But I agree she was one of the unsung heroes of the first two.
@@KaizerBeatz-vf9wf The Kay character didn't even belong in Part 3, not at all. Not after the way Michael closed the door in her face in Part 2. *That* was final.
these behind the scenes images are as epic as the film itself. what a legend!
robert redford ! thank fuck he didnt get the part would have spoiled a masterpiece and pacinos career might not have kicked of thank you coppola for your tenacity
I was actually watching Al's award speeches 2010-2011 and saw this in the sidebar of videos. I look at Al in this video and look again in his 2010 video. even ADORABLE people gets old and I will always love him no matter what ♥
He was very handsome and a wonderfully gifted actor. I smell a bit of jealousy here.
Goodmorning Mr. Pacino have a great Friday 👍
Sooo good-looking AL!!!!!
Let me just say if al didn’t play Micheal this awesome trilogy would have never been!! Go choice Francis 👍🏼👍🏼
