I had my horses on Walter Scott’s cattle ranch some years ago. Walter Scott was a bigshot stunt coordinator and Caan’s brother in law. Bobby Duvall, Caan, and other A list actors came here to rope cattle all the time. Caan was a jerk. Duvall was a great guy.
haha I actually don't hate the 3rd one, it's just a microcosm in comparison to the first two masterpieces. You add Duvall in it and replace Sofia Coppola and you get a pretty solid flick that still doesn't hold a candle to the first two but isn't as hated on. Sofia Coppola has not place in front of a camera, just behind it.
Second was all about money too, but Coppola put all of his energy in it and it went really well. Same with third but different case clearly. He's a wild card ;)
Duvall should say that...he bowed out of the 3rd for money issues... And as I recall reading in an article, Duvall's character actually had a big part in the 3rd sequel. Without his character, the story was not as solid as it could have been, IMO.
Duvall declined to be in Godfather 3 because Pacino had a much bigger paycheck than him. So when he said "well better than the third one", it was savage...

Jeremiah Jere Exactly. It goes all the way back to American Buffalo which Pacino revived on Broadway to great acclaim and which overshadowed Duvall's original production (which was also greatly acclaimed but less notable relative to Pacino's higher profile take on it). I have seen Robert Duvall randomly bring up Scarecrow in an interview and talk about how Hackman "blew Pacino off the screen" without even being asked anything about it. He also is someone who loves the tango in real life and has dissed Pacino's tango scene in Scent Of A Woman and his Cuban accent in Scarface when he played a Cuban in some movie. I know they are also friends, and Pacino always talks about how he wishes Duvall had been on board for GF III, so I don't necessarily think it's just that it's between them. As far as I know, those guys don't hate each other or anything (I don't think) but Robert Duvall periodically sticks it to Al and essentially stuck a knife in Coppola's back by not doing that film, demanding Pacino level money (!?!) (and Coppola is the greedy one?) for a move that is called The Godfather not The Consigliere and whored himself out to be Tom Cruise's pit crew chief on Days of Thunder instead for Godsakes... and people still stick up for him. It boggles my mind. Very fine actor and an incredible jerk............
