I asked Ms. Niki if she could clarify on her thoughts on the 4th edition and I am posting her statement below. "The 4th editions are for high school only, since Stephen’s are still third editions. The 4th editions were written by a group of writers within Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. They did not follow the Saxon methodology consistently. That is, there were efforts to incorporate progressive methods in the books. No, I can’t/won’t give examples because it’s been too many years since I looked at the books. My word will have to count on It. The offer of Common Core handouts after 2009 for Saxon users is another example of the new publisher’s attempt to alter Saxon methods. The publishers could not change John’s books until his copyright expired, even though he was deceased. His copyright expired in 2007, the year of his 3rd edition. Thus, they created a new 4th edition in 2009. Remember the warning: If John’s name is not on the cover, it’s not written by him. Using the name of “Saxon” in the title doesn’t mean he wrote the book. This brings me to the new publishers’ Saxon Geometry book. It is the perfect example of having the Saxon name in the title, but not in his methods. FIRST, JOHN WOULD NEVER HAVE PUBLISHED A GEOMETRY BOOK. His reasoning is explained in my book. If you want me to go into it, let me know. I stand by my opinion about the “Saxon” 4th editions." -Niki Hayes Reminder: RC does NOT recommend the Geometry book either. Uggh, my heart hurts for children in public schools...it's criminal. When she said that the 4th edition is garbage my heart sank...that's what I bought from robinson curriculum. Why does rc say it's fine if it's not? I'm so confused. I guess I'm going to dig around for 2nd and 3rd editions.
As a whole Saxon is still solid no matter the edition. It is not an easy task to find older edition with the matching answer key, test forms etc. Talking with Mr.Hake who authored the early editions, he would still recommend the newer editions, in fact in some ways he thinks they are better. I hope I can have him on again to explain that part. Of course it’s perfectly fine to have a preference for an edition and if you can hunt it down, great! However, I would still prefer a newer edition over any other math program :) The philosophy is the same, incremental development and continual review.
You would probably have to call and ask but I just went to covenant homeschool resource center in PHX and they had a lot of 54s and 65s first and second edition.
Thank you for sharing. Are the tests in the student text book? I’ve just purchased the 1st editions of 5/4, 6/5 and 7/6 with the corresponding teacher editions? Are the solutions and answers in the teacher book and are the tests in the student book?
Do you mean the home study packet, or you purchased separate Teacher manual editions? Neither of those have the test forms, that is a separate Test Forms booklet. The homes study packet will have the answers to the test and the problem sets. The Teacher Manual textbooks will just have the answers to the problem sets in the back.
Thank you so much for replying, I’m getting so confused :(, I bought 1st edition 5/4 student and teacher, and 2nd editions of student and teacher for 6/5 and 7/6. I’ve not heard of a ‘study packet.’ I’m in the U.K. and would love to try this out, home Ed two boys. Do you know if those editions did the tests and solutions manual? So far from looking I can’t find any. From listening to this video and the author, it sounded the tests cover work completed over 5 lessons, so I’m guessing it’s important. If I purchase separately tests and solutions which are later edition, can you see any issues I’ might run into? X
@@jessicajones611 you really don’t need solutions manual for anything under 87. The answers would be enough. Here is a link so you can see as an example what you would need, the textbook, answer key called the home study packet and the test forms. The home study packet has the answers for the tests and textbook. www.ebay.com/itm/Saxon-54-Math-SET-1st-Edition-Textbook-Answers-And-Tests-cover-Wear-/154551164589?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
In her book she talks about it, and I understand where they were coming from. They have I’m sure demanding careers in the medical field, family and didn’t enjoy all their siblings get togethers to be about business matters. They thought the company could take Saxon and give it a better audience.

Hi Jennifer, I asked Ms. Niki if she could expand on what she meant, and I pinned her comment on this comment thread. Hope it helps.
What a great interview! Definitely going to watch this one again!!😍
Very interesting interview!
Thank you for watching!
This was so good!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would love to read her book. It is tough to find it. The link in the description is not working.
Do you know what edition Saxon books are on the RC website order form?

Why did Saxons family sell his books to Houton Mifflin/Harcourt? I wish they were still independently published!
