    I’m anxiously awaiting my RC cds and found your videos this week. WOW!!! I’m even more excited about beginning this new journey! I haven’t watched all of your videos but if my package takes too long I can’t make any promises. LOL Thank you for all of the great insight! I may have more questions about the book printing and binding once my curriculum and printer arrive. I would love to be entered in your drawing, as well! Again, thanks for the great help!!!

    I personally was taught algebra through Saxon math, it got me from seriously NOT understanding algebra at all to getting a scholarship in college due to my SAT scores. I will forever be thankful for Saxon Algebra 1/2, 1 & 2.

    I used Saxon Math in school back in the late 80s and 90s. I was unaware of the controversy until I saw what was probably the same 60 Minutes video you aired back in the early 90s. I still remember a critic saying that Saxon math makes students into math-solving robots and 15 year old me thought "isn't that what we want?"
    It stuck with me... To the point that 44 year old me searched for Saxon math online and found this video.
    In the years between I eventually realized that the educational establishment had no interest whatsoever in education. Looking back it makes complete and total sense that "the elites" would not want a successful man like this fixing education. Saxon was a realist; not some latte-sipping educrat looking for ways to maximize the cost of education.

    Thank your for sharing! I've been teaching at public and Christian schools for the past 25+ years. For the past two years, I've been a learning support teacher at a Christian school that uses Saxon. Due to the pandemic and the current climate in public schools we've almost doubled in size the past two years, and have had huge retention rates of students. It has been a challenge for me to work with students who come in who have been taught so very differently in their public school. But, when I think about the whole picture, when the "elite" became the experts math scores have gotten worse, and the gap increases.

    Saxon would make a great movie. War hero, a fighter, an outsider of the education world, who put everything on the line, mortgaging his house, to creat a new method of teaching math. Winner for best picture.... Saxon.

    Saxon math is hell for gifted students who are genuinely interested in math, but it’s good at dragging reluctant students through math they’ll never use.

    • @ScottClifton1
      @ScottClifton1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've had great success with both "I hate math" students and extremely gifted students using Saxon Math; taught it since 2001. No student really knows when he'll use or not use certain math problem types; you're prepared if you do, and at the very least, it's great practice in problem solving. Saxon himself is a perfect example of a student who piddled through math, convinced he wouldn't use it, then had to go back and catch up on math he should have worked harder on, needing it to become a pilot.

    Wow this is GREAT information on Saxon. We have been back and forth with this program over the years, but I did notice a significant difference in the older texts. My oldest daughter used the 3rd edition several years ago and enjoyed math until we switched to the newer paperback texts. She hasn't liked Saxon math since and we have been from Saxon 3 to Algebra 2! So we made a switch for the whole family based on that experience...but realizing we could have stayed with the 3rd edition for the higher level maths has made me rethink. I appreciate the history behind John Saxon as well. A real eye-opener! Thanks again for this informative video.

    Hi, Karen. I absolutely LOVED this video. We are long-time Saxon users. We've used all the books beginning with Saxon K and my oldest just started Algebra 2. I've watched these video clips before because I'm a researcher, just like you. I would have loved to meet Mr. Saxon in person. I LOVE that he spoke his mind and that he recognized that all children are capable of learning math. I'm curious to know why you've chosen not to start your children with the lower levels of Saxon (K-3rd)? Is it because RC recommends not starting until they're ready for book 5/4? Keep these informative videos coming. Oh, and I would love to enter the give away for math games book. Thanks.

    • @ourhouse

      I have been thinking about it recently. That is why I have never considered it as I was under the assumption is was just "busy work" but I don't know..I am curious to try to find the lower levels of Saxon and see what they re about. I'm already doing something..so why not? I am open to it. Do you like the books? How long does a typical lesson take?

    • @stlilymov4
      @stlilymov4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each day begins with "warm-up" activities the student completes in their Meeting Book and on their Meeting Strip . It changes from year to year but generally it includes, adding the date to a calendar, logging and graphing the weather, counting money, extending patterns, making and reading graphs, counting, telling time and answering related questions, and other activities. Once I taught my kids how to do the Meeting Book exercises and how to fill out the meeting strip, they did this warm-up on their own. They then do a lesson with me which takes on average of 10 to 15 minutes. The last part is a practice worksheet they do on their own. All together, a typical math lesson takes about 30 minutes. Some lessons take longer (they make cookies as they learn to measure and follow a recipe, for example) Some families skip the warm-up altogether and jump right to the lesson. This is an option. I love the books. I will give you one piece of advice, the Kindergarten book seems to be at more of a Pre-School level so you might want to skip that one. I use it when my kids are in Pre-school but some families skip the kindergarten book and begin Saxon when their child is in the first grade.

    Wow! We used Saxon for about two years when I was being homeschooled. It worked very well for us at that time. So I tried it last year with my own two children. However we did not enjoy the Saxon K or Saxon 3. They were very different from what I remember using (7/6 and 8/7). I really considered finding the old Edition Saxon 5/4 and trying that this year. That's not what the Lord led me to do, but I still think the old Edition Saxon books are excellent an curriculum.

    I think Rod and Staff Math 1-3 is the perfect foundation for Saxon....but you only need the Teachers Manuals...the workbooks are overkill and totally not needed as you can write a few problems from the manuals....they have word problems, a linear progression to counting practice, pictoral....but manipulative encouraged concept growth, linear progressions to learning math facts, and it teaches many strands of math money, fractions, place value in a hands on way. I love that I never have to purchase consumables and the kids are getting a solid foundation. By using the manuals solely without the workbooks one can skip the things that the child knows well periodically allowing the child to move forward quicker. I really can't stress enough how amazing these are for middle grade prep. Brandnew they run 15 dollars...ebay more like 10....they are so affordable.

      I know this comment is old, but thank you for mentioning this! My firstborn is in R&S 2, and I (Saxon trained from 5/4 up, and a big fan) adore it. My son (and now I) have better number sense than I ever had, but amusingly, though I have the teacher's manuals, I've barely referred to them since about halfway through level one, and then getting going with level 2. I guess that's pretty silly, since it's the TG explanations that helped us most with conceptualizing place value and blowing me out of the water with both of our ease in large mental calculations! They are just set up so classroomishly, plus, since we use the workbooks, the repetition seems so unnecessary. We do skip or abbreviate things pretty regularly in the workbooks, though. I never thought of just using the teacher's guide! I will have to take another look! Although, I am trying to go less teacher-intensive (as much as I actually love that part), since I have an up-and-coming student to add...
      Thanks for sharing!

    Saxon math was the only way my child could understand and be successful at math! she mastered the skills because they were constantly reviewed! We did Singapore for all the younger elementary math. It was good and solid but everytime we got to a review she forgot half of it! So "mastery program" titles are a bit misleading to me. How are they really mastering math if they can't remember what they did? Every child is different. For some kids constant review is not necessary. For me and my oldest to be successful at math we need constant review. When you learn ballet you introduce a new concept every class but review and practice basic steps for complete mastery and it to be second nature. As you incrementally learn ballet which is complex it can only really be mastered that way. My grandmother was in the American Ballet.

    I really appreciate hearing your experience with Saxon. I did Saxon when I was homeschooled and couldn't make it past Algebra 1. Hated it. So I didn't want to put my kids through that torture. My husband, however, did Saxon too and thinks it's great. We love Fred and have been doing it exclusively for a couple years. My 10-year-old is in Ice Cream and struggling. My husband suggested I try Saxon along with Fred. All I could see was the torture I went through, but I decided to take a look at Saxon from a different perspective, hence I watched your video. My 10-year-old is a fluent reader and has a good foundation in Math from Fred and a few other resources, so I think he's ready for Saxon 45. Do you use Saxon and Fred together? How do you make it work, with time constraints and all? That's what I'm worried about.

    • @ourhouse
      @ourhouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first we saved Fred for weekends, times when we took off from school etc.. But then one day I sold it all. Suprinsingly my children have not asked once about it, they never say they miss Fred, and they do Saxon on their own without me telling them.. Even on Sunday mornings when they didn't have too. I think they really enjoy the structure, predictability, and being able to correct themselves and redo lessons as needed without me being the teacher. It all was a little bittersweet, but we are in a better place and I would have never imagined that years ago. I still bought Fred Calculus just to find out the back story lol then sold it. It helped us when we needed it and I was able to finally let it go. Just remember it's not a no, just a not right now. 😀 that helps me with these things.

    I enjoyed your video and would like to be included in your giveaway. I had gotten all those Saxon early editions and also had started too early with my oldest. I think we will try again.

    Thanks for the informative video! I’m a *very* new mom (baby is due any day now) and want to be prepared for homeschool ahead of time so I really appreciate your videos. Am I required to be a patron to participate in the giveaway?

    There was no controversy. Only jealousy from those who didn't like Saxon's results.

    We made the switch to Saxon math in 4th grade, so that was Math 5/4. Do you know the difference between Saxon math hardcover and softcover? I get the hardcover ones, but recently heard that the softcover is more advanced? Please enter me in the giveaway :)

    • @ourhouse
      @ourhouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are the softcover the newer editions? If so I think they do more 1/2 old concept 1/2 new. Or are the softcover the homeschool editions? That's a good question, I'll see if I can find an answer. I'm curious too.

    I always thought the reason people didn't like it was just because homeschoolers used it

    If anyone is interested in a Saxon-type physics book, two of my friends wrote one which is based on the Advanced Placement Physics B curriculum. John Saxon did write a Physics book, and it is a good one, but it did not cover all of the material in the AP course. My friends took his book and adjusted and extended and improved it. The name of my friends' book is "Advanced Physics for High School Students" by Bohn and McVicker. Their book, like John's, is algebra-based Physics, just like the first course in College Physics at any American university. It is not calculus-based physics. Teachers who used this physics book were able to have students achieve the same remarkable results that students are able to achieve using John's mathematics books.

      The RC advises against using any Physics course that is not based in calculus, even the Saxon Physics.. Calculus, not algebra, is the real language of Physics. As Dr. Robinson said,and many college professors will agree, algebra based Physics retards a student's ability to properly learn Physics. Real Physics requires calculus and public schools do a horrible job of teaching calculus. That is why they have to rely on an algebra based Physics courses.

    Not a fan of Saxon. I used it as a homeschooled child and even gave it a go as a homeschool parent. I just don't like it 😭

      Life of Fred. My oldest likes Saxon but it takes too much time for him to get through it. He would be in his 20s before he could graduate at the pace he goes through the book (took a full year to finish through lesson 85....in one book). I prefer LOF anyway. I wish I had that instead of Saxon because I did terribly with it. Always thought I was stupid and hated math because I couldn't do Saxon well. My siblings did great though - my brother is an engineer and my sister has a degree in forensic science. I was the only one who struggled with it.

    At 37 years old when I got into John Saxon books I had never understood math I can't even comprehend the level of crime that it is got to teach his books and school or the level of treachery that a man could have in his heart that would withhold this type of learning experience from children had I had his books whenever I was a child I probably would have excelled in math because like doing it so much and they just so blatantly lie to parents so that they can keep their Monopoly this has got to end

  • @okiedoke6373
    @okiedoke6373 ปีที่แล้ว

    To that interview with that woman I think where else would you find that would be John Saxon Math books because you don't need anybody to teach you he did such a good job that you can pick it up and learn automatic

  • @okiedoke6373
    @okiedoke6373 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can take his books and educate yourself in stuff no other book will teach you whenever I was in prison the only algebra book that I can make any sense of was his new teachers in there to teach me algebra do you understand all the algebra books that were in there trash you can't learn anything from that so I don't understand how there could be a controversy unless you're against learning I guess the world right now doesn't stand for any kind of Truth so why wouldn't you be against learning
