    I owned the original gixxer 750. If you think it is amazing to ride today, just think how amazing it was in 1985! It was a hundred pounds lighter than any other 4 cylinder 750 at the time, yet, had more power, far better brakes and suspension than any of them. There wasn’t even one litre+ bike made, other the gixxer 1100 that could keep up with it. But as spectacular as the speed and accelleration was, the stopping power was from another dimension at that time. Two fingers on the brake lever could lift the rear wheel as high as you dared at any speed. I used to love doing stoppies at 70mph on the freeway just to blow peoples minds. Gawd I wish I still had that bike…..

    I have owned one for over 25 years and in my mind at 61 years old it is like a four stroke big brother, in soul, of a RD350LC. Treat the gsxr750 1985 with out respect and it will spit you off. Currently sitting in the garage with a historic registered 1979 GS55E which I have also owned for over 30 years. Hail Suzuki.

    Brilliant video !! Started riding dirt at 6, by the year 1987 I was 14 and guess what showed up my in parents garage !
    A 1986 GSXR 750, my brother had brought his buddies new bike home and left the keys in it. With only my dad home I snuck out in my storm rider jean jacket and bell D.bike helmet and rolled the beast down the alley quietly. Once far enough away, I started and rode it for a bit. Never looked back after that moment in time. I’m now 48 and and been a licensed bike mechanic for two decades. I have a chance to rebuild that old bike that changed my everything, and will do once it arrives at my garage.
    Please keep bringing these videos 🇨🇦❤️🤘🏼

      @@atthesummitMTBskills Back then the original Blade was road only as it didn’t fit into any racing category. I had one as my street bike whilst I raced GSXR-750’s. The original blade however on the roads was an absolute weapon. Bikes today do produce more power, have much improved rubber, however so many rider aids. When ABS, used to be two fingers on your right hand and traction control was same hand using your wrist. 👍😎🇦🇺

    I've owned 3 of these back in the 80's and early 90's. It is the true race bike with mirrors and blinkers. The '87 was the best year model for me. Good for about 150mph. Thank you guys, love the classics ❤ !!

    • @Dug6666666
      @Dug6666666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about preferring the '87. The first one was a bit too race focused, and what was thought to be best for the track back then didn't necessarily translate as well to the road.
      It was a bit of a homologation special is how I see it.
      I'm only going on a brief "have a go" ride back in the day. Like any bike with more time in the saddle you learn to adapt. Stepping off the very neutral handling first gen VFR, probably didn't help impressions.
      My current bike is an 87 GSXR750 . I love the look of them and from that past experience I was surprised how much the ride feel had changed more to my tastes in just one generation.
      Another pro for the 87 model is it is not stuck in a cross ply tire rut like the first gen, the 87 was amongst the first bikes built for low profile radials.
      2022 tires on an 1987 bike is the best of both worlds.

    • @AREA-51moto
      @AREA-51moto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      86/87gsxr same bike, basically. not noticeable dif, if any. Same wheels too.
      I remember the 86 vfr. I rode/raced them all back then. I have a bunch of 86/750's right now. I raced a borrowed 86/750, i remember riding an 88 (second gen) 750 racebike and it was nite/day from the first gen. Whole different animal. By 1990, you couldnt give a 1st gen away, lol.
      The 86/87gsxr BEST looking ad Most important sportbike ever made.

    • @Dug6666666
      @Dug6666666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AREA-51moto I'm getting my model years mixed.
      Wasn't aware either of any significant changes to gen1's so I though 87 must have been the first gen2.
      As you probably guessed mine is an 88 gen 2 with its radial tire wheels.
      Pretty sure the one I got to ride was a first release of the gen 1and that is the only impression I can speak to of that model.
      Gen 2 is indeed a different animal, more to my taste as a previously only Honda rider.
      Got my gen2 about 20+ yrs ago, still had a soft spot for 750's, it was my price, and it was my favourite looking of the 80's 750's.

    • @AREA-51moto
      @AREA-51moto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2nd gen Smoked first gen in every category. I raced an 86 (borrowed), and had my own 89 racebike.
      The gsxr name/model was ruined when they went to the water cooled bikes, Super heavy w/ Miami vice graphics. They took a racebike and turned it into a street squid bike. Heavy POS. At that point, need to be on a cbr900rr!
      1st gen gsxr, most historically important and unique look. 2nd gen way better bike. 86 vs 88 = 6 of these, half a dozen of those.

    • @Dug6666666
      @Dug6666666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AREA-51moto Yer those later graphics where garish (I was going through a Mazda rotary phase during all that.)
      Water cooling was inevitable I guess with the usual bike horsepower wars. The oilers could take a decent tune in race kit form but probably wouldn't work as well on the road as water cooling jackets for city riding with a lot of waiting at the lights.
      The first water cooled GSXR should have beaten the Fireblade to the punch in power to weight.
      Suzuki has been a bit of an also ran since with the occasional brilliant engine but no real design direction that sets them apart like the old days.
      As I remember the early 80's the factory teams were stuck with making race bikes for billiard table smooth race tracks from 750 road bikes designed for riding through pot holes and bumpy curves. Optimising them for high speed agility on a track and staying with the frame restriction mod rules had Honda putting 16" front wheel bikes on the road for instance.
      When Suzuki went all out with the gen1 GSXR it had a ridiculously short wheel base (at the expense of swing arm length) for road use, coupled with a steep rake angle and that was their solution to making a successful race bike platform.
      I looked up the GSXR750 gen1 upgrades and the 86 model got a 25mm longer swing arm, and the 87 came as standard with a steering damper.
      That confirms my impressions of riding the 85 model, but like I said you get used to that sort of thing.
      I remember nearly falling over on the first turn from the showroom after picking up my new 16" wheel VF750F, but it soon became part of my riding style to enjoy aggressively counter steering it to make it drop fast into corners.

    53 years old now I wished I bought one when they were cheap in the 1990s! And they were very cheap when the watercoold came out. I know a motorcycle mechanic from a former motorcycle workshop I worked occasionally when I was still learning in a factory who owns one from new when it was still in production. He must be at least 60 today. His one has got other heat shields on the exhaust with rectangular holes.

    In 1986 I bought one as soon as it landed at my local dealership, same blue/white livery. I had obsessed over it since the first pics came out in Euro magazines and to say I was stoked is an extreme understatement. Of all the bikes I've owned, none gave me the same thrill throwing a leg over them the first time as that little gixxer did. I've thought about finding one to restore but, it just wouldn't be the same as if I'd kept her. In case you're wondering..... she perished in a heavy handed, cold tires high-side. The damage to my bod wasn't nearly as painful as seeing my beloved little R all bent and broken. :(

    We booked a test drive on both of these with our local dealer, when we arrived the gentleman kindly said "you're okay for a while lads", when we asked how long we had.
    So we both smiled at each and 400 miles later we returned the bikes at 7:50 just before the dealership closed, they said "where the hell have you been", we said "well you said no one else is booked in" ( it was in the days before mobile phones too ). What a fantastic day that was😁.

    The early (non-slingshot) GSXR had flat slide carbs, they have direct operating slides connect to the throttle cable so you can ‘over carb’ the engine by grabbing too much throttle at low rpms, they made better power for racing at high rpm’s than early CV carbs … the slides in CV carbs lift by vacuum so you cannot over carb’ the engine 👍

    • @GigachadAKM

      Flatties are the best though for overall response, you just have to know how to roll on or have the accelerator pumps tuned right.

      The U.S market model 86-87 GSX-R 750s (they never got the original 85 model) had CV carbs, very similar to the 1100s 34mm CV's, they were also about 5 hp down on the UK, Australia, NZ, South Africa models. The poor over legislated Swiss got it the worst tho, their 86 1100 slabsides barely made 70 hp, they also had a single rectangle headlight instead of the iconic duel round ones.

    In 1988 I was a proud owner of the 1100 version. I was 23 years old with stars in my eyes. There was nothing on the road that could touch it at the time for speed and looks. I was truly in love with the bike and spent all of my year's salary buying her. The love affair didn't last long. Lost my licence. Caught doing 138mph on the M4. More fool me. But I couldn't help myself. The bike made me do it, honest guv. I now ride a Vespa. Love it just as much in a different way but something says to me sometimes 'how the mighty have fallen.' Oh, one more thing, the girls I knew never appeared to be that impressed. Think they would like the Vespa more. How cute.

    Yup, great bike. I owned one for a couple years, mine was an 1988 GSX-R 750J Slingshot. I didn’t go to a higher CC size since I was confident within the 750 power band. I put some minor upgrades on her and wore a Shoei Lawson X-R8 helmet with it. Fastest I went was just over 125 since back then I was in the Army (Infantryman) and things went bad for the career with reckless driving charges which is often the result when you’re caught going Mach 4.

    I picked up a '74 Honda CB550 a few months ago, finished getting it sorted and ready to ride just recently and have been putting the miles down on it. It is a weird thing how the old bikes are objectively worse in nearly every way, but they just feel so...visceral I guess? I dunno, there's just something about it. The CB550 does the same thing where if you give it a lot of throttle low in the rev range it stumbles and coughs. The suspension is pretty much garbage, the brakes are more of a suggestion than a command, and my wrist feels like it's going to fall off after a couple of hours of riding, but I love it. Having previously only owned a '17 CBR500R and a '16 GSX-S1000, the old CB550 is just a totally different animal, and I love every second of riding it.
    Would absolutely love to give one of these old first gen sport bikes a go.

It's amazing. I do love a slabbie but slingshots are a lot better, 5 years development back then and each revision moved the bike on a mile. Great review Boothy! Every bit well said! Ride more old gold and spread the word that for the price of a new superbike you should just grab a few old school legends and spend the change on petrol and tyres and track days and have more fun.
