Hey Frank, I get you about sentimental value records. Most of my Heavy Metal collection was given to me by my uncle that I hung out with a lot when I was a kid. He is the reason I listen to Heavy Metal. The collections itself was a couple hundred records. To me, those records are priceless.

If an album doesn't fit into 2 sides but is not long enough to spread over 4 sides, I totally support the decision to make it a 3 sided release with a side 4 etching, imo.

I think with CD's and digital music we have lost the idea that sometimes limitations force better results. Track sequencing for LP's seems like a lost art today
There are lot of albums where just working with the limitations of LP would make infinitely better album than just cutting it to double LP with exactly same songs and order as CD.
I don't care if there's couple of songs missing if the overall result is better album.

💯 agree, perfect example is John Scofield A Go Go, should have been 3 sides, sounds like CRAP forced on only 2. I’m used to the etchings as a Dead Head. I don’t mind the etchings, just maximize the sound.

I have one record with an etching. It is Peter Gabriel's Passion, which is his soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ. The interesting thing is the records are 45 RPM 12 inches and supposedly this makes the sound quality better.

As a person who does a live radio show/mixcloud upload. I prefer records to have less tracks per side because its a faff to find a track on a packed LP side. Etchings look cool as but I don't put records on display so they are pretty useless to me. I have two maybe. Pic discs and coloured vinyl are also a pain to DJ with, clear vinyl is the worst because you can see the tracks on the reverse side!

Regarding the 3-sided album. The first one I got was back in the 1970's, Johnny Winter Second Winter. The 4th side was blank, I mean nothing, so at least there is an etching these days. Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks for the video, Frank.

I don’t listen to metal so I haven’t seen those etchings before (I’m assuming it’s primarily a metal thing). I think they look cool for the 10 seconds you might look at it while putting it away. If they put demos or extra music on those side 4s they’d only have an excuse to jack up the price more. 🙃

Etchings are just nonsense. I'm not looking at them beyond the first time I get it in the mail, anyway. The only time I was happy to get one was trying to cut open a package sturdier than Fort Knox. Dug in too much with the knife and went through the mailer. Luckily, Side D was right underneath and I only scratched the etched side.
Costs these days are ridiculous, especially in Canada. Looking at about 50 bucks per LP for anything newly pressed. Our disgusting shipping rates don't help.

While I don't care about a side 4 etching, I would rather have that than a shortened version of an album. It kills me that I can't get Sade's "Promise" album with "Punch Drunk" on it (the LP is also missing "You're Not The Man"). While it seems that we are paying for a blank record side, it's possible that it could be more expensive to actually include another 4 or 5 songs- cutting masters, pressing etc. Maybe there's a future with 18" records that will hold more songs! Ooohhh... new turntables, sleeves, storage🙄💸💸

Hello Frank ! I also wish they would spread it out over 4 sides or fill it up with b-sides , live tracks or remixes. An excellent example is the 2019 30 year anniversary issue of The Cult’s ”Sonic temple”. This sollution could also apply to Cd to vinyl from the mid 90’s to late 00’s.

Re prices, you have to factor in inflation. From 1985 to 2023, in Switzerland there has been 56% inflation. Records back then were 18 Swiss francs, now they are around 30 (some more, some less). So right in line with inflation. The outcry about prices is misplaced, IMHO. -- Etchings: why not? Depends on whether the etching is good. Still better than just a blank side.

When it comes to reissues, I don't mind etchings on one side or another. I recently bought a 2LP copy of Butthole Surfers' Electriclarryland - the copy I bought was an original press (1997) and had an etching on the D-side. Given that the album features thirteen cuts and none of them are short, I can't think of any reason to complain. I also remember seeing a vinyl pressing of a William Burroughs spoken word performance, under which Kurt Cobain had laid down some guitar. The whole program filled one side of a 12'' record and the B-side had etchings of Burroughs' and Cobain's autographs. To me, that would be worthwhile. I guess the point is that etchings and things like that need to be taken on a release-by-release basis; some feel worthwhile, but some might not. That's how I see it, anyway.
As far as a record in your collection which might not be the most expensive but it's still a treasure to you, I can relate; for me, it's a copy of The Beatles' "Daytripper" b/w "We Can Work It Out" single that I've had since the Nineties. I was shuffling through things in my parents' house and found the single. I asked my father about it because I know he's not a fan -- and he told me that his best friend had purchased the single when it was new and brought it over to Dad's house to listen to while they were getting ready to go somewhere. When they left, they left the single at Dad's house because there was no reason to bring it with them. Ultimately, it got forgotten about (in no small part because my father was never a fan of The Beatles); it got stored in a box, eventually Dad's best friend died and it lay untouched until I found it. It's still in about as mint a condition as you can imagine (it might have been played twelve times total), and the sleeve is in near-mint condition too. Is it worth anything? Maybe -- but the story is gold, to me.
Records which cost me over one hundred dollars a pop. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I have bought a couple, but they've always been records which were music which meant a lot to me when I was a kid. I bought an original pressing of Big Lizard In My Backyard by The Dead Milkmen for about $100 because that album was a big deal to me when I was very, very young (under ten years old) and a re-pressed, reissued copy of The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails on the aftermarket because it was in good shape, I couldn't find an original pressing and, again, the music was pretty important to me when I was a teenager. That has often been the deciding factor for me, if I'm considering a record for which over one hundred dollars is being asked; not that I jump on anything that high-priced very often, but I've done it once in a while when I had the money to blow.

@0:19 -- Regarding the price of vinyl:
It is bad enough that new records cost $30+. But what adds insult to injury is how nearly all of them have sub par sound quality. That includes pressings labeled "audiophile" or "heavy", or "half speed mastered", etc, which cost even more, and virtually without exception all have sub par sound quality.
I could purchase 25 records, and would probably never listen to 24 of them, again. I would be lucky if 1 of the 25 records had great sound quality.
So that would be a minimum of $750 down the drain -- not to mention the time and effort, and taxes. And to re-sell them is a chore.
So why buy them, knowing it is nearly 100% money down the drain?
The above is for people interested in great sound quality. If you purchase vinyl for other reasons, then my rant does does not apply.
I would gladly pay $100 for each record, if each record had to-die-for sound quality.
Such pressings exist. So it is not that the studios and pressing plants are incapable of delivering to-die-for sound quality. They just do not care -- and they charge $30+ for their "who cares" work ethic.
Folks, imagine if nearly every pressing you purchased had heavenly sound quality. You would be buying records left and right, at nearly any price, if you could budge it.
Instead, only certain stampers have such amazing sound quality, and only a percentage of those stampers qualify. I estimate that perhaps 5% of pressings have great sound quality -- but the number is probably closer to 2% -- and that is for only one of the two sides (rarely will both sides shine, sound quality wise).
But imagine if 98% of records had to-die-for sound quality. Imagine ordering records, and being blown away by nearly every one.
It is such a shame that the record companies get away with their mostly low-end production of pressings.
For video, the public would never accept sub-par picture quality. But for sound, the public eats up any slop that the studios shovel out. My guess is that because so few pressings have amazing sound quality, so the public does not realize how bad their collection sounds.
Play a couple of white hot stamper pressings, and you will realize that you have shelves and shelves of "whatever" sounding pressings.
That expensive turntable, tone-arm, and cartridge will not, and can not, help lousy pressings from sounding lousy. But that great turntable, tone-arm, and cartridge will sound magical, when you place a white hot pressing on it. Even affordable gear will sound 3x the price, with a white hot stamper pressing. Alas, we are stuck with the slop from the record companies -- and rarely rewarded with a pressing that they got right.

Hey I have some Questions too: First of all: Would u buy a Record Twice? For example the Band you Love release their Album again for a Remastered Version maybe First Time on Vinyl and Maybe with Bonus Tracks, is this a Reason to buy a Record again or would you say: No I'm fine with the Original? And another one: Since I'm into Gaming too and that is coming maybe more digital, would you consinder to buy mp3's over a CD/Vinyl or Streaming an Album? I'm not much a Fan about Streaming, only if i wanna test if the Record is something for me and then i would buy it on CD/Vinyl or MP3 :)

Love those old days where you would take your records to parties and put your initials on them, it was an item to be used rather than a collector's object you have to keep in pristine condition. Can't imagine there are many collectors today writing on the front cover with a black marker! About those etchings, they are annoying but I have an album where the band put a remix of one of the tracks as a bonus on side 4 and guess what, I never play it. So it doesn't really matter in the end. Live tracks would be cool though. And unlike CDs, where the bonus tracks ruin the flow of an album sometimes, on a separate side of vinyl I don't have to listen to them if I don't want to.

There's a tipping point where the price of new records will outgrow fan's ability to buy them. I'm already there and will nowadays opt for the CD at less than half the price of vinyl. I love records (I have 4000) but I buy the music and not the format...especially if I feel I'm being taken advantage of and gouged.

      I agree with you.
But there is a downside with this approach. For the same album issued nowadays the CD version has a worse mastering than the vinyl (lowder, more compressed and flater).
So if one chooses the CD for the price there is a big chance he is also choosing a worse sounding version of the album. To me this looks very much like scumming... 😐

Makes me happy that I have specific interests in record collecting. Only really want Black Metal, Doom Metal and some Death Metal. And only the ones I actually like. I do not want a collection of albums I don't even listen to.
But CD's to my mind are kinda worthless. They're pretty much just disc shaped USB sticks, the exact same files you can just download from TH-cam if you want are just digitally stored on the CD, just like a USB stick.
Meanwhile vinyl is completely analogue, the plastic literally IS the music. It's not just a digital storage device like CD's are.
Now yes, CD's still have the additional art work, booklets and you support the artist by buying them... but.. eh.. They're just lame to me. I feel like I'm wasting my money when I buy CD's because I would never choose to use them over MP3/streaming and them just being storage devices for said MP3/streaming files makes them feel redundant to me.
Meanwhile vinyl is far more valuable to my mind.

Do I like the etchings more than if there were additional music on that side? No. But, I do like the etchings, most are designed well and are cool to look at. I don't mind them per se. Think of this. Instead of just putting one record with two sides, maybe that etching will justify at least a side 3. On some pressings, I would rather have 3 sides than just 2 sides even if that means having a side 4 etching.

I got back into seriously collecting vinyl about ten years ago when I had a long illness. That kind of thing (providing me with way too much time to ruminate and reminisce) helps you sort out your memories and priorities. I'd had so many great experiences living with records that I knew I really wanted to keep them in my life, even if nobody else seemed to have much interest in them. I didn't build my library for them; I did it for me. So I had no idea about the explosion of interest -- and universal hike in prices -- that happened during the pandemic until... this year. I still buy too much (mostly new, under $40 audiophile jazz reissues or quiet Japanese pressings of titles long out of print), and the quality of vinyl pressings (even the top-grade stuff) still leaves a lot to be desired, but I'd be happy with my long-accumulated existing collection even if I never bought another disc.

    1. Yes, the price of records is insanely stupid, now!! That's a small part of the reason I stopped buying (for the most part) about 10 years ago. Maybe one Trump takes over next year and prices across the board drop dramatically, records WILL be pretty cheap, by then.
    2. I had a record pressed 27 years ago over the Christmas holidays and it only took them 3 weeks. Otherwise, records that are warped as soon as you pull them out of the case. "School's Out" had a slight warp in it when I bought it and, probably because of that, I had a LOT of trouble playing, "My Stars", "Blue Turk" and "Street Fight", they skipped all over the place! Records that have a different track listing or running order in one country compared to that of another country. Companies that double-dip by releasing the same songs on multiple albums, each with a different title and cover and the only difference is one or two songs you can't get anywhere else. Or bands, like King Crimson, that keep re-releasing the same shit over and over again in "best of" compilations and, each time, add two new tracks you can get anywhere else making you pay well over $100 each time the same boxed set comes out. Or, like the "complete" Jimi Hendrix Woodstock performance that came out about 20 years ago: it was out on vinyl, CD and DVD. Only problem was, there were 2 songs on the vinyl version that weren't on the CD version and 2 on the CD that weren't on the DVD and 2 on the DVD that weren't on the vinyl so, to get the entire performance, you were forced to buy all 3!! Luckily, I was on the Woodstock preservation project and already had the entire performance!
    3. Utopia did an album about 35 years ago that was a double. I'm sure they could've fit all 15 songs on just two sides but they put on 5 per side and side 4 was the same as side 3. Had I been them, especially seeing as how Todd is well known for putting over an hour's worth of material on a single album, I would've either squeezed all 15 onto a single album or, put 13 on and tossed the extra two onto a single inside the cover or, made it a double 10"! Super Furry Animals has a LOT of non-album material per album and could've EASILY filled side 4 of "Phantom Power" with the non-album tracks they released on the 3 CD singles (2 extra songs per CD)! Okay but, how many CD's do you know of that run more than 40-some minutes? That's a pet peeve of mine! You have up to 80:00 to fill on one of those and all we get is 30 to 45?? But we have to pay a lot more than the vinyl copy because it's on a CD??
    4. As I said last night, there's no way I can pick just one! It's kind of a toss-up between, "Hellraiser", "The Re-Animator", "From Beyond", "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things", "Cube", "The Thing (Kurt Russell), "Dead & Buried", "Halloween III: Season Of The Witch" and "The Abominable Dr. Phibes".
    5. I've been to so damn many, I can't really say. Possibly the Ringo Starr gig where we were so close to the stage we were staring right up his nose and, when he started singing, "Photograph", I turned to my future ex-fiance and sang the first line to her and then kissed her and when I looked back at Ringo, he was smiling and pointing straight at us.
    6. I don't think I have any audiophile albums. What's the point, really? The original's good enough. For ones stuff, I won't pay more than $20 for a single album. Pay $40 now or wait 5 or 10 years for someone that blew 40 on it and decided to sell it for 25.
    7. At the moment, 4 or 5 very rare break-in records. There's one by Dickie Goodman on Davey Jones Presents, another I've never even seen a picture of that's from the `70's but uses all doo-wop records, a copy of "Back To Earth" on the Universe label or with the hand-written L, same thing with "Public Opinion". I know they both exist but have never had one. I have "Back To Earth" on the second Luniverse label. and, there's a really weird one from Australia called, "Gases For The Masses". all I've ever seen is the original acetate and, the day I recorded it, the acetate was falling of the metal plate!! Last I heard, that sold a couple years later for $3000. As far as I know, there's no vinyl and it only got as far as the acetate.
    8. I only ever bought 1 8-track and that was because it was the ONLY copy of the second Todd Rundgren Runt album I'd ever see. I THINK I've actually picked up a vinyl copy since then. Otherwise, I don't think I have more than 8 8-tracks, if that many. I've got well over 1000 cassettes and possibly several hundred open reel tapes, though.
    9. Seems to me there IS ONE but, it's been 4 years since I had my collection here at my hand so, I just don't recall, anymore.
    10. I don't drink.

I hate etchings. They waste space and dish warp the record. A recent, otherwise great reissue of APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, had 4 tracks on 3 sides and an etching on Side D instead of 3 tracks on 4 sides at 45rpm, which would have made it one of the [if not the absolute] greatest pressing of that album. I agree, it’s a horrible trend. Sort of acceptable on FEAR INOCULUM because the album was cut to 5 sides and it was already a bear to cut that album efficiently. Fine, etching on Side F is cooler than nothing. But then NIN did it for absolutely no good reason on BROKEN. Could have easily been 4 tracks on 2 sides at 33rpm, obviating the need for a 7” single.

For the most part I stopped buying records due to the extremely high prices. Ugh! It is a good thing I bought almost all of my records back in the day of the 1970s, 1980s.... and bargain basement prices of the 1990s... 2020s been just too expensive. CDs are more affordable for physical media.

The record biz is doing what they do. They priced CD's in long boxes at $20.00. Now vinyl is overpriced. Add to that the pitiful, less than .01 per stream paid to the artist and you've got the downfall of recorded music. You'll never hear bands that COULD be great because either they give up or are buried in the millions of streams.

My 2 cents on the side 4 etchings. They do nothing for me personally. I think if you are going to press an album on vinyl, you either need to figure out how to cut it into 4 sides or just 2. I agree flipping over every 3 songs may get annoying, but older albums from the 60s and 70s were pretty short. 10 songs at about 2.5-3.5 minutes per song, thats only a 30 minute album or 15 minutes per side. We just (generally) have longer songs nowadays. But yeah, lets kill the side 4 etch. I can't display the side 4 anywhere because how else can I play side 3?

  • @danmartinez5502

Cash grabs are just that overpriced BS. Used records are risky and the market is shrinking. In the 70s records were over pressed and the quality of vinyl suffered. Japanese and European vinyl was superior. Buying a record because of the color of vinyl is more likely a cash grab. If you take care of your vinyl it will stand the test of time. I have 50 year old vinyl that sounds great.

Are record prices high, yes. But consider that in the 80’s records were $8.99 and minimum wage was $3.35/he so one would need to work 3 hours to buy an album. Today many of those same jobs start at $15/hr so someone would need to work 3 hours to buy an album. I’m sure I’ll be shouted down for this over simplification of the situation though.

I honestly think etchings on an unused record side are super cool. Also, artists usually sequence an album with a specific end-song for a reason, and adding bonus tracks (that are usually throwaway material anyway) to artificially create extra "value" kind of cheapens the intention of the album sequencing and usually makes the album end with a thud. (And I personally almost never listen to the bonus stuff more than once anyway, for that exact reason.)

Here's the thing about records prices. In 1980 I was paying $6 - $9 for a record. That is the equivalent to $22 - $33 in todays money. So records really don't cost more than they did 40 years ago. However, for most people, income hasn't kept up with inflation, so it may not feel that way. You can apply this analogy with anything you buy. Cars, houses, clothing, etc. All that being said, I don't spend more than $35 for a record. It doesn't matter who it is or what's supposed to be special about it. If you establish a limit and stick to it, that's best. Would you pay $200 for a haircut if you can get a perfectly good one for $15? If all records start costing $50 or more, I'll just buy cd's. They are the bargain, since they started out at $20 in the 80's.

Cumulative average inflation in the US over the last couple years is 15-20% NOT 3-4% that they report monthly. That’s just how much it’s up compared to 12 months ago with food and energy removed (how silly is that?).
In reality vinyl like most everything manufactured & shipped is over 2 years into high and continuing monthly inflation. At first when inflation hits volume of sales kinda keeps up with higher costs, but eventually you must charge more when buying slows. This is not greed!!
This situation is what shutting down (and threatening to end fossil fuels) gas & energy production in the land of plenty almost 3 years ago will do! No surprise really. And it won’t get better until we do a major U-Turn in leadership & policies in both countries.
Canada is even worse inflation-wise. Wonder why the US shut down the Canadian oil pipeline on Jan 20, 2021…. Very idiotic move for US & Canada to be sure. Wonder who benefited? Hmmm

The others are 180g, splatter pressing, half speed mastering...who needs that sh***? I don't feed the a*** of greedy speculators! Sorry man, but vinyl records are dead to me!

I was going to order an LP/CD/Blu Ray set from UK (not available in Australia), cost was going to be 120 UK Pounds, they then wanted 75 UK pounds postage. Not funny anymore.

Man I *hate* the side 4 etching. Like the first time I saw it (The Aquabats "The Fury of the Aquabats") I thought it was clever, but then when The Pretty Reckless "Death By Rock and Roll" had one, it really started to bug me. Like, I feel like that record could've been on one disk. What am I supposed to do with that etching? Frame it and put it on the wall, then never listen to the last few tracks on the album again? Or Green Day's "Insomniac" 25th anniversary edition. Like, you put live versions of 8 of the 14 songs on side 3, why not just find versions of the other 6, or demos or something. The etching looks cool, but like, how often am I going to be looking at that? If that record is out of it's sleeve, it's probably on the turntable.
