- recorded by Miss Moonshine. At the Portland Oldtime Gathering, Seattle's (Tall Boys, Squirrel Butter) Charmaine Slaven previews her 2012 instructional flatfooting DVD style. She's a great teacher and her DVD should be great too. (See us playing banjo and guitar together in related upload!!)

Well done! That is the best break down of the Tennessee Walking Step I have ever seen.
I have heard of it as Buck Dancing, Flat Foot dancing, and reference to it being from Ireland, Scotland, England. Is this also a local step to Tennessee? I have relatives down there!
this is the BEST teaching video Ive watched and she really explains it slower, better more simpler than anyone else and it made it easier to learn. thank you.
This is way more helpful than the other videos I've watched. Thanks!
every human learns differently....different things "click" for them....that is why I post many dance instructors views of what clicks for them
That was awesome! I've never tried this style of dancing, but I've enjoyed watching. Lately I've really been wanting to actually do it! This video makes it look simple and tomorrow when my hubby is at work, I'm going to try these basics! I'm impressed that Charmaine could dance and talk at the same time without messing up! Thanks ladies!
Yeah that's what I'm gonna do. Wait till hubby is gone. I'm 62. But I really wanna do this
How did it go ?
This is a great teach thank you!
You really explained it well, and I'm pretty thick between the ears. I like your work. Practice now.....
precious! Great method! Better than I have seen before
Really nice break down of the steps. Nicely articulated.
What an easy way to learn this! Please, teach more!!!!! Excellent video and teach!
This is a great tutorial! Thank you so much. Now to practice xx
Nicely explained - thanks!
I absolutely love this!! Thank you
Wow! thanks Charmaine great teaching method.
It looks fun! I am not a dancer, but will try this...
Plus good exercise.
Very clear. Thank you!
Terrific- thanks for doing it.
This is the lesson that I was looking for! Keep it coming! I like your natural style, and the blue jeans! Blessings!
If you're interested in learning more, you can get my DVD on my website at charmaineslaven.com/Charmaine_Slaven/Flatfooter.html - thanks!
WOW! 1- what a good teacher!!! I think I could do that. Gonna try. 2-a slim American girl…? WOW again! Very nice.
Not many good dancers are good teachers. this is excellent. getting your DVD!
+bixchick007 Thanks much, hope you enjoy the DVD!
Wonderful!
thanks for this!!!
Great lesson.
No matter how hard I try I can’t seem to get the hop in my step foot that you have.
Thank you, I have learned a lot.
Good stuff!
Where can we buy the DVD ?
Awesome. Instruction made simple. I want to learn this so bad for song and dance time with my daughter. We both love the dead south, Tyler Childers etc. can’t wait to surprise her with some actual skill.
We’re not dead yet, Robert. We will never die!
The Mermaid's Tale lol. Very true. It’s just the name of a band.
GeekyGirl! Luv it.
Hi Folks, thanks for the inquiries! My new flatfooting instructional DVD is now available! You can access it on digital streaming through the Roots Channel for $17 (lifetime access) or order the physical DVD for $24. Both formats available here: charmaineslaven.com/Charmaine_Slaven/Flatfooter.html
+Charmaine Slaven Nice! If you have a review of your DVD, I could post it to Oldtime Party blog.
+Moonshine V Awesome! Yes, here's a review from Nic Gariess "“Charmaine Slaven is rapidly gaining renown as an invigorating presence in the West Coast old-time music & dance scene. Here, she shares her personal flatfoot style, drawing on Appalachian percussive dance combined with her own singular creativity and musicianship. Throughout this cozy instructional DVD, Charmaine leads us, woodstove-side, through the basic rudiments of freestyle old-time solo dance. Along the way, she shares helpful tips and insight, making this project an invaluable tool for anyone seeking a glimpse inside the structures and style of American mountain dance.”
- Nic Gareiss, percussive dancer and ethnochoreologist"

Cool, your channel has been inspiring me to get out my dance shoes! Its been awhile
Charmaine is the first name of the main character of Murder on the Silver Comet Trail. A book on Amazon.
Small world! I was on the Silver Comet Trail last weekend! (never go alone...it's scary!)
When i was 13 i was in love with a girl named Charmaine. And the lastname Slaven means in dutch literally ´slaves´.
very good
Yall make it seem so easy lol
Thanks for this. Great to see how it's done. Hard to understand if it isn't broken down. Still too complicated for an old man, but I'll try it. Do you offer private lessons?
I do indeed, shoot me a message if you're ever in the Seattle area!
good stuff gals
Sure, would love to! Let me know if there are any good festivals that would invite me to come teach :)
Oh my goodness! Do you offer lessons?
There's a lot I can't figure -- are her shoes flat or do they have heels? Why are her pants legs hanging down to hide the action? What kind of soles do the shoes have? Are they any special sort?
🤗🇬🇧
Outstanding instruction - Thanks!! Looks like an excellent form of an aerobic workout while having lots of fun! Do you always wear the boots while doing this and is it safe for the hip/knee joints of older people to do this barefoot? Again, thank you!!
The Tennessee walking step is very hard on the hips and somewhat hard on the knees. less hip heavy step might be the Thomas Maupin basic step, or the Green Grass cloggers basic step- because they mostly use ankles instead of knees and hips. I have videos for them on my channel
@@MissMoonshineDance I really appreciate this response. Thank you very much.
@@babyvlad007 Please never barefoot if you value your feet. Slidey soled shoes like smooth leather work best, Oxford lace up shoes
❤Great Teacher. But the photographer should be quiet. Lol! 😅
this video was a lesson for the photographer paid for by the photographer, who decided to share it with you for free. So maybe you should be quiet, and go buy the DVD from the teacher
That's great....Do you give private lessons?
Yes, hit me up if you're ever in the Seattle area!
I'd like to know what shoes she has on. Leather bottom shoes with the chunky heels are hard to find for women.
They are jazz tap oxfords with the metal taps removed and replaced with handmade wood taps.
where can I get the dvd?
You can get the DVD here: charmaineslaven.com/Charmaine_Slaven/Flatfooter.html
Where can I purchase the entire video? Great video. Thank you!

Where's the DVD?!?
You can get the DVD through my website here: charmaineslaven.com/Charmaine_Slaven/Flatfooter.html
LOL AT A BARBER SHOP
TheJukeboxhero15 or dentists
Where can I buy the DVD?
Joanne Baum she put a link in the comments below. And the board need only be a piece of 1/2” ply duct taped to an old piece of yoga mat, with a handle from a purchased picture frame
@@MissMoonshineDance Thanks Moonshine...I went to the link and it said the item was no longer available. Oh and I did make a board today..I'm on it now. gorilla glued an old exercise mat to a board..so light and easy to move.
Oh wait..i went to amazon..just found it. thanks!
@@joannebaum5459 you can order the DVD for download/streaming here: vimeo.com/ondemand/flatfooting or a physical copy can be purchased here www.cdbaby.com/cd/charmaineslaven1 - thank you!
This absolutley isn't how we flatfoot in the Appalachians, where it was born and where it lives
u r free to send me a better video and I’ll upload - we can see how many views it gets
And the camera woman is apparently literally making comments
it was a lesson that i requested, and of course i’m going to ask for clarifications during my personal instructional
if i could make a small comment. although you start out by putting your left foot forward, what you do NOT say is that you have to hop on the other foot and drag it backward at the same time. that is what makes the basic step so difficult. its going forward with one foot and hoping and dragging back with the other foot hard to master. perhaps a slower video with emphasis on using both feet at the same time. i mean, i can SEE you hoping and draging backward but you dont really say that...and since its not with music, its all that much harder...
MarlenusofAR most beginners forget their weight needs to stay on the side that steps down for the full two down up beats - ie. Most chug back onto the other foot
I explain this more in depth on my full length instructional DVD. You can order the DVD for download/streaming here: @t or a physical copy can be purchased here @t - thank you!
How is this different from tap dancing?
Yeah I was wondering that too. I'm a tapper. I'd call these steps a little differently, but I got the lesson well, thank you, Charmaine.
Apparently the camera woman is having a seizure
nice legs
Are you wearing a certain shoe? Thanks for the video
wooden taps
yankee flat footing, now I've seen it all
if living in the northwest makes one a yankee...
It looks so easy, then again MJ made the moon walk look easy. I’ve had about equal success with both dances... that is to say, none.
Great teacher but the person recording talks a lot and is WAY too loud. She doesn't seem to understand that she's right next to the microphone. So annoying!
hey, I recorded this mostly for personal use. I recorded this during a private lesson that I paid for. You get it for free so you gotta deal with it
