    All of Leto's choices are to delay the creation of the self replicating, prescient hunter seekers that would have ended humanity on a universal scale. By preventing space travel except by his words, he limited any form of war or infighting that would have both boosted tech growth and incentivized the Ixians into researching more powerful hunter seekers. He also let the Ixians grow wealthy and complacent with his money so they had no reason to go against him by developing these systems. If they are making insane amounts of money making iPhones they aren't going to go waste time with weapons R&D especially if it risks their iPhone market.
    This was all a stalling tactic to buy the breeding program time to create someone immune to prescience so they could add this camouflage gene into humanity. His actions would also cause the research into ships that weren't spice dependent and a large number of stifled explorers that were biting at the bit to go out into the universe.

      I only read the first 2, but I still know what happens after them. You don't need to know the books to know the lore these days, I even know some of Brian's lore as well. Quinn's ideas is a good channel for Dune lore for instance. You don't need the books to know that the true protagonist all along was Duncan Idaho.

    Leto ii was the foil to Paul. Paul was a heroic character, a charismatic leader and ultimately a villain, using others to further his own goals. Leto ii was a monstrosity, a tyrant, and sacrificed his very humanity for the survival of mankind.

    • @sollertiskhan3254
      @sollertiskhan3254 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Idk.. Paul wasn't this evil self serving opposite to selfless Leto 2. He also marched to the beat of the same Golden Path. Just like Leto 2, he also was a tyrant who felt he was doing it for the greater good. Although perhaps much less willingly, and gave the feeling of being trapped to the golden path.
      And it was only until after the birth of his children, and him walking into the desert, did he try and unwind the golden path his Son set on to ensure the survival of mankind. And his reasons for trying to unwind is cause.. its horrible in all scenerios I think.

    • @anonperson3972
      @anonperson3972 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sollertiskhan3254 Paul wasn't evil. But he was much more self serving than Leto 2. He tried to divert when he could, but ultimately wasn't willing to die to prevent the Jihad. And once he had power he wasn't willing to turn himself into the God Emperor to fulfil the golden path. He was surprised that his son was willing to do it, there was a conversation about this in children of dune. But he wasn't evil, he was HUMAN, with the instincts and limitations that brings.

    • @sollertiskhan3254
      @sollertiskhan3254 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@anonperson3972 I know I've read Cod. But most of his actions, were marching TOWARDS the golden path, not self serving. Most of his actions mirror his sons, a tyrant doing terrible things for this mysterious greater good. That was most of his time.
      And although yes, he ultimately tried to stepa way from the golden path and unwind it- that cannot be called selfish. He could not chose between the horrors of two paths and chose the lesser evil.
      So yes, he's more human, less fremen than his son. But its not an opposing foil imo.

    The God Emperor chose to not know how he died. He wanted it to be a surprise. He also wanted to create a future that wasn't deterministic. He was so bored of being able to predict every little thing. One thing not talked about the books is how much sex they have. There is so much sex in the books, I would venture to say that sex is a central theme of the Dune books.

    Love how symbolic Herbert's writing is
    As the bene giserit are analogous to the power of motherhood
    The voice is the voice of a mother which can topple kingdoms as sons and daughters will be influenced by their mothers
    The ancestors possession is the pressure of family that will always try and fulfill the goals of parents and family
    That are ancestors live on through us

      Dewd ! I was thinking something along those lines these past few days, while listening to Dune books' commentaries. Prior to seeing Dune I & II there is this book I was reading: Karma by Sadhguru. In it, among other interesting things he tells us how karma is like memory imprinted on a non-physical drive which survives death of the body-mind and then waits in limbo(not his words, mine) for another moment of conception between two partners that have the similar affinities as its own (since we cannot speak of a gender yet). Besides this, not sure if it is from the same book, or even spiritual tradition, I remember reading somewhere that these tendencies that are repeated habits, recurring thoughts & emotions are ingrained in our genetic(but not just the DNA) memory -which would be better called ancestral memory. These patterns of acting, reacting and physiology are easily triggerable and can surface, especially since we spend so much time our our early, formative life with those who will teach us -not only by their words and advice, punishes and rewards- but by their very behavior which we mimic before our discernment is formed. These habitual behaviors become more and more prevalent in our lives as we get older thus we get more conditioned to our cultural and genetic heritage.
      The key to not becoming our parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts/older cousins is becoming more aware of our impulses and unconscious tendencies as well as the social and cultural conditioning. As the author put it "distancing ourselves from our karma" That's how I view the ancestral possession as getting too under the influence of our in-built programs, sort of like you start running on automatic.

    • @user-zg3gh8xg9v
      @user-zg3gh8xg9v 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Also in Sadhguru's book are presented some curious ideas, like how one conciousness can simulaneaosly inhabit 2 bodies at the same time or how 2 "souls" can inhabit the same body and burn two types of karma. I'm not saying this sort of things are easily believable, however if we suspend our disbelief like when reading/watching a piece of fiction then it is worth considering how we are more than meets the eye and that what is presented as fiction may very well be plausible though not for your average Joe.

    • @SenatePalpatinetroller
      @SenatePalpatinetroller 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-zg3gh8xg9v I don't see anything wrong with becoming those things, it's just not making mistake while being those things. See wrongdoings and make it to not do. Many things and habits are positive, trying to distancing from it and from karma is also a form of abomination.

    • @Chessheromusic
      @Chessheromusic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@user-zg3gh8xg9v wow that's fucking interesting
      Never thought it like that but there's obviously some truth to it
      Then again does genetic memory even need to exist for us to just mimic our parents
      More simply , monkey see monkey do
      Especially before we become our own person
      But it also , begs the question if we can ever truly become our own person , at all???
      Maybe we are just almalgamations of our ancestors bc are parents are almagamations of theirs??
      Not sure distancing even changes anything.
      As maybe , our behavior can change from our parents and ancestors bc of the other people that influence in our lifetime.
      Not sure if that's karma memory or genetic memory but it seems very simple
      And the book dune influenced me a lot ... in many ways as much as my parents

    At 14min the OP talks about shroom trips, he couldn't be closer to the truth that Herbert was describing. The spice are spores, the water of life is what happens when certain shrooms are soaked in water and then drank, and the mind expands with "the beauty and the horror" of the trip. Certain shrooms are said to connect you with your ancestors and other spirits that travelled beyond and sometimes to something higher still.

    The sandworms didn't attack Leto because they recognized sand-trout, not because they saw him as one of their own. Sand-trout surround bodies of water which would mean the death of a sandworm so they leave Leto alone. If the sandworms saw him as "one of their own", they would have attacked Leto as sandworms are very territorial.

      @@SenatePalpatinetrolleryou'll probably get hate for this, but I agree with you. If you read the 6 Frank books, the end results of Leto's Golden Path justify his tyranny and brutality. Frank made Paul spout off about Hitler in Messiah to force comparisons, but even Paul eventually comes to regret his actions and realize Leto was gonna do what he never could, even if it meant untold suffering. The moral essentially comes off as "sometimes, leaders become tyrants and brutal for ulterior, utilitarian motives" rather than "be wary of heroes, leaders, and messiahs"

    The God Emperor, in my perspective, is one of my grand favorites. Even being a villain means to have a purpose against something bigger and evil than themselves. Someone who has changed the form of power between physically, mentally and spiritually. With all the power villains like the God Emperor possess they could do anything they see moral and fair, however the price of gaining supreme control within an entire universal scale of inhabitants would encounter such extreme peril to either himself, the people they serve him, or the lives he protects becomes his enemies.
    I see him as my own imaginative perspective of spiritual symbolism of doing something quite similar, aside from making tyrannical business, in a form like the Xenomorph Queen. Her looks may be terrifying, yet like any living thing she has survival tactics like a hive of wasps. Terribly misunderstood organisms, made by alien's advanced weaponry to do horrific things they see no other way in order to survive, exactly how wasps paralyzes their prey only to be devoured alive by its larvae. Nature can be cruel as part of it is fair, it is how it made us. To do terrible things for the greater good, or making a choice to do something selfless to avoid terrible business.

    Kind of a bummer that you’re commenting on a book that was written with the premise that AI/“thinking machines” are dangerous, and yet this whole video is riddled with AI art. Please remember that those AI programs were created by stealing from & learning without the consent of the artists whose works were used to train them.

    Mispronounces her name as "Cheney"; later switches to the correct "Chani" while summarizing the hot mess that is all of Herbert's post-DUNE Dune novels. I mean, DUNE is the sh-t, but all the later iterations are IMHO disappointing, convoluted contrived BS. And why use the current cinematic Dune's Paul actor when he SUCKS?

    A political leader becomes a literal immortal monsters inherited memory of millions and visions of the far future uses borderline AI that destroyed humanity 10k years ago in their time to free humanity. I see a messiah complex here. There’s no individuality in this story everybody but a pawn in the grand scheme. The only person with some individuality is a duplicate of his original self, a nth duplicate of himself who doesn’t even know if his memory forms by this iteration or the past inheritance
