I have had anorexia. I will struggle with my weight for the rest of my life. But the secret trigger? I will tell you. It's power and control. When every thing around you is being controlled, the only thing that you can control is not to eat... I had to learn how to eat all over again after ending up in the hospital at 84 lbs. I was about 24 years old or so. I am now 53. Over 120, and I love food again. Just like a kid.
Tracy Lunos I agree with you! I had a similar experience and nine was also triggered by comments about my weight during puberty. I had a curvey figure, was healthy, liked to run and bicycle. Back in the 70s and 80s most doctors were not aware of anorexia nervosa. I'm so glad to hear that you're alive and doing well after this:).
@@pinkrose5796 thank you, and ya, back in the early 80s we sure didn't know anything about anorexia. When the doctors told me I didn't believe it. I said...but I am not dieting...with therapy I found out that because my husband was so controlling that the only thing that I could control was how much I could eat. And I didn't even realize that that's what I was doing. I got out of that marriage and with the help of a dietician and caring friends, I learned how to eat.
Excellent success story. I sufferd from bulimia through high school, my mom is extremely controlling and abusive. I remember after throwing up i would feel this amazing calm come over me. I remember finishing up in the bathroom and feeling almost euphoric and everything was going to be okay. Kinda the same feelinh after cutting myself. Stay strong and healings to us both ✊
@@prittyugly86 it has helped to stay educated. To this day, in times of high stress, I don't want to eat. But I remember where that lead me to, in the past, so I modify. Several small snacks throughout the day, instead of Meals. Hope that you have found healthier ways also to deal with stress. I use music a lot...

I can still remember the day we all heard of the tragic passing of a true American music Icon. I felt as though we all lost an age of innocence in music. Here I sit 32 years later and my feelings are still the same. Thank you Karen and Richard for giving us your beautiful musical souls.

Bill Belzek - or another way to look at it is that God gives us the freedom to think and make our own decisions. Karen died because her body could not handle what was being done to it. Look, there are plenty of wonderful people who live very long lives and there are people who do evil things that live short lives.

Yes I picked up on that. He kept using the word 'apparently' in relation to anorexia causing heart failure. Very awkward interview IMO but as you have highlighted, no doubt because it was relatively unheard of. There was much scepticism about it, still is but a greater understanding of it these days due largely to media and social media coverage. Karen's death single handedly bought it into view
The saddest part is that perhaps if the medical world had been more knowledgeable about how to treat it, this very talented artist could have stayed alive much longer. 😢
Not even just that. Any mental illness was not really taken seriously. There wasn't much talk about it, there wasn't much research on it, and people with mental illness had to fend for themselves because of the lack of support and the bad name mental illness had.
A dysfunctional family like an overbearing mother (who clearly showed more love and attention to the son) and a very meek father with a daughter trying to please personality of trying to please and be perfect is a recipe for disaster for such a young sensitive girl like Karen...she felt that her weight was the only thing that she had control over all psychological with physical manifestations...typical perfection personality dysfunction....truly sad story

Who among us would not have been blessed to have been in the very presence of Karen Carpenter, whose voice pierces my own heart and brings tears to my eyes each time I hear her sing -- a voice which, I can only presume, is not too dissimilar in tone and beauty from that of the angels that many of us hope will receive us after we are gone from this earth? funny, I thought to myself as I listened to the questioning, that this (interviewer)fellow seems to have a sense of respect, and dignity about his line of questioning, and the delivery. Today, they're so cold, unfeeling and ask the most ridiculous questions. He was pointed, and then he was done. I could be wrong. He actually looked worse than that when I saw him on the Australian equivalent of this show back in 1983.(where the interviewer discreetly avoided the words "anorexia" and "death" and simply asked Richard about "what happened to Karen").

Richard adored his sister when ever the media picked on her about her weight he stuck up for his sister he did everything he possibly could to help her through her disorder. Before you go around pointing fingers how about actually read up on the carpenters? Karen Carpenter's voice was Heaven sent. Her brother Richard was a brilliant musician/composer/arranger. Together they made music history. They were a fantastic team. They were business partners, siblings and best friends. Anyone with a heart and a sane clear mind can see that Richard was in a lot of pain in this interview. Anorexia Nervosa was an unknown quantity in the 1970's and 80's. Even today, how can you explain a disease that makes a rail thin person believe they're overweight? Perhaps it started with an idiot journalist calling her "chubby."

If Richard ever reads this he is right about too much added weight too fast.My sisters Brother-inlaw did the same thing after a stomach surgery to reduce weight.He started to eat regular meals but it was years later and I guess the heart did not do well with a surge in weight quickly.He died in his sleep while taking an afternoon nap.He was in his early 40's.I love you Richard! I remember when Karen died, I was very depressed. Their music always made me feel happy as a child/teen in the 70's....I was so unhappy and treated badly by so many people. Their music cheered me up........it still does. I'm glad I'm not unhappy anymore as an adult.
All I can say is the negativity below is a sign of the times. KC is dead and speaking ill of the dead shows a lack of maturity. The music will live on long after RC is gone and I think that focus on the musical treasures that they left behind is what all of us should do.

Their songs had such beauty...and her voice heavenly...I hope she is resting peacefully and know that there are many of those who love her til this day.

You probably know nothing about the emotional and psychological abuse she endured from her mother, and her jealous, perfectionist brother. Everyone in her life was overbearing and controlling, and that was the one leverage she used against them. To her, it was saying, "you may be controlling me in most areas of my life, but you cannot make me eat". It was her way to rebel. When her mother made comments about her being too thin, it probably drove her to lose even more, just to spite her. Read up on her life before criticizing her. She DID seek treatment the last two years of her life had was getting healthy. Her body had just endured too much and gave out. Everything is not just black and white. You just don't get it, and probably never will.

At least David Hartman was and is a fair and objective interviewer...fast forward about 20 years and had this happened Matt Lauer would have ambushed Richard almost certainly.
They should have been ambushed when Karen was alive, she needed to stop living in denial. I'm not at all attempting to be rude , I have been through similar with my Daughter & we found that addressing the issue properly (No denial) was a great help to her recovery. Tough love is needed in a situation such as this .. there's no other way !

There is a clip out there when Karen and Richard were interviewed by a British reporter and Karen is asked by her if she has anorexia nervosa. Karen looks at her straight in the eyes and says, "No." At this point she was skeletal. I remember reading that early on, there was a review of them, a male reviewer made a snarky comment on her being a little heavy; she started dieting and never recovered. What a tragedy, all the way around.
It was Sue Lawley for Nationwide in Britain in 1981. Questions were a little personal and Karen wasnt ready to talk about her issues with anorexia, only saying she was 'pooped'. Interview was stopped and resumed a couple of times because of this 😔
Candelyn Lawind - While it’s not a certainty in Karen’s situation, you’re wrong if you think it can’t happen that way. All the signs were there for Karen. She had a domineering mother who favored her older brother. Richard, while perhaps well meaning, ran the show for the most part. And Karen wasn’t the decision maker in the group. Some people who feel smothered, controlled, and insignificant might look for an outlet to escape those feelings. Even if that outlet is harmful and may end up killing them in the long run. So there you go. She couldn’t control her family. She could control her weight. Or so she thought.

Anorexia Nervosa is one of the deadliest mental illnesses because the person suffering from this disease literally starves to death,I know my daughter is a true anorexic and it’s terrifying,thankfully as of today she is well but it is never cured and never goes away so I thank God for every healthy day she has, she was diagnosed in 7th grade and is 36 today,she has had relapses but as I said today is a good day. I was born in 77.. i do remember when she dies i was 6& they kept playing her songs on the radio, i sat down at a toy piano and played Rainy days& Mondays" my grandfather heard from the phone& had a Yamaha piano sent to my house, i have perfect pitch& ill never forget the song that made it all possible. It's amazing how he didn't feel he could sit around for years waiting to get the album out. Immediately after her passing, he got to work and had it out within 9 months. Sitting around being a self-pitied basket case wasn't an option.
Back then when this was recorded they did not have a clue about the causes of anorexia. Of course now we know a great deal more. Richard answered to the best of his ability and he did it with a great deal of dignity. He was a wonderful big brother who adored his sister and encouraged her to be centre stage, for that alone I am grateful. A musical genius.
What a gift she has left us, I always think Whitney is the greatest but Karen is right up there with her, both struggled with fame, it can't be as easy at it looks.
I feel bad for Richard that all people want to do is ask about Karen, they never seem to ask "how are YOU doing?". I was devastated when I heard the news she had died. I was 23 at the time. I was probably in my 30's before I really learned much about anorexia. What a huge loss to not only the family but to the fans who couldn't get enough of that voice along with Richard.
I was 18 as well in 1983 and had been familiar with the Carpenters since day 1. Anorexia then was something which affected models and young girls. It was a terrible shock to find that Karen had suffered from it.
Wow just out of high school when she died growing up I was in love with Linda Rhonstandt and Karen Carpenter. Watching these shows brings back memories of better times.
Edna Red (a commenter below) was directly on point with regard to the cause of anorexia and the manifestation of anorexia. One word, better known as "The Big "C" - CONTROL. Everyone wants to have a certain amount of it in their lives, but from what I have researched on Karen's life, professionally and otherwise, she felt like she had none. She actually became addicted to the idea that she could CONTROL her weight, therein lies the root of the disease/condition. By the time she realized she had a desperate problem, the damage had already been done to her body and its internal function. She ended up losing her life for the need to have CONTROL. The tragedy of this situation is hard to put words to.
Sealust50 - issues about weight are just a symptom. The root of the problem began with family dynamics. This is a reason, not blame. Karen was trying to please her mother and get her love and approval. It's documented in so many places how the mother favored the brother. Karen already sang well and her weight had been mentioned so that's where eating disorders start- with a diet that goes out of control. That's where the control part comes in. She might have felt like she didn't have a lot of choices in her life but she could control what did and didn't go into her body. That is the recipe for anorexia, no pun was actually intended.

I'm suprised about the amount of dignity and understanding from the both of them, since this was from decades ago! People on TV nowadays aren't that knowleadgeable on this disorder.
I was blown away (after watching part 1& 2) at how composed the family is during the interview, especially her mother. She has been gone less than a year when this was taped. I'm not trying to be judgmental or anything, but still, how a mother can talk of her daughter and not shed a tear I think is a bit telling re the "family dynamic" as far as emotions go. No doubt of course they loved her with all their heart, I guess lots of things just require no explaining by those left behind.
It was not 30 pounds gained to an already frail body … It was the fact that her heart was silently screaming for so long .. excsusted and with no relief or end in sight … it could no longer keep going so strong and all alone … The beat of those drums … It came from deep within … A voice smooth like ribbon Effortless it would flow … And once u heard it Made it impossible Not to stop and listen And realise how amazing that she shared that gift with u and me and the whole world… What a gift to to share That’s what only brilliant music gives …. It’s priceless

I believe that Richard was the golden boy. I’ve listened to most of their songs and there’s not many that are joyful or happy songs. The only one that really stands out for me is, I’m on top of the world, but you guys may know more joyful songs.
The Carpenters was a good part of my youth and I loved her voice! As for this interview, Richard doesn't look very convincing and I don't believe for a minute that he didn't know how and why his own sister's condition began.
Karen had a curvey figure and I remember seeing a picture if her on a song or album cover. She was walking and yoy could see that she has hips and thighs like a lot of women did. I believe someone called her chubby or fat, plus her mother playing favourites with Richard were a trigger. If Richard had at least stuck up for her, I think that she may not have started to starve herself. Just speaking from experience:(

I had to learn how to eat all over again after ending up in the hospital at 84 lbs. I was about 24 years old or so. I am now 53. Over 120, and I love food again. Just like a kid.
Tracy Lunos I agree with you! I had a similar experience and nine was also triggered by comments about my weight during puberty. I had a curvey figure, was healthy, liked to run and bicycle. Back in the 70s and 80s most doctors were not aware of anorexia nervosa. I'm so glad to hear that you're alive and doing well after this:).
@@pinkrose5796 thank you, and ya, back in the early 80s we sure didn't know anything about anorexia. When the doctors told me I didn't believe it. I said...but I am not dieting...with therapy I found out that because my husband was so controlling that the only thing that I could control was how much I could eat. And I didn't even realize that that's what I was doing. I got out of that marriage and with the help of a dietician and caring friends, I learned how to eat.
Excellent success story. I sufferd from bulimia through high school, my mom is extremely controlling and abusive. I remember after throwing up i would feel this amazing calm come over me. I remember finishing up in the bathroom and feeling almost euphoric and everything was going to be okay. Kinda the same feelinh after cutting myself. Stay strong and healings to us both ✊
@@prittyugly86 it has helped to stay educated. To this day, in times of high stress, I don't want to eat. But I remember where that lead me to, in the past, so I modify. Several small snacks throughout the day, instead of Meals.

I can still remember the day we all heard of the tragic passing of a true American music Icon. I felt as though we all lost an age of innocence in music. Here I sit 32 years later and my feelings are still the same. Thank you Karen and Richard for giving us your beautiful musical souls.

I remember back in the 70s my sister had the same issue with her weight. it was horrible she had to be hospitalized. Thank God she made it. May you rest in peace sweet singing angel 😇🙏✝️🕊️♥️

Bill Belzek - or another way to look at it is that God gives us the freedom to think and make our own decisions. Karen died because her body could not handle what was being done to it. Look, there are plenty of wonderful people who live very long lives and there are people who do evil things that live short lives.

Yes I picked up on that. He kept using the word 'apparently' in relation to anorexia causing heart failure. Very awkward interview IMO but as you have highlighted, no doubt because it was relatively unheard of. There was much scepticism about it, still is but a greater understanding of it these days due largely to media and social media coverage. Karen's death single handedly bought it into view
The saddest part is that perhaps if the medical world had been more knowledgeable about how to treat it, this very talented artist could have stayed alive much longer. 😢

Not even just that. Any mental illness was not really taken seriously. There wasn't much talk about it, there wasn't much research on it, and people with mental illness had to fend for themselves because of the lack of support and the bad name mental illness had.

Richard is asked some tough questions by the parasitic media personality (who's just doing his job, of course), and he answers with dignity, grace, patience, wisdom and love. Who among us would not have been blessed to have been in the very presence of Karen Carpenter, whose voice pierces my own heart and brings tears to my eyes each time I hear her sing -- a voice which, I can only presume, is not too dissimilar in tone and beauty from that of the angels that many of us hope will receive us after we are gone from this earth? How lucky Richard was to have grown up, performed, recorded with his sister. The two of them have enriched our lives in incalculable ways. Thank you for uploading this footage.

First of all some of the comments below about Richard being the cause of her anorexia sickens me. Richard adored his sister when ever the media picked on her about her weight he stuck up for his sister he did everything he possibly could to help her through her disorder. Before you go around pointing fingers how about actually read up on the carpenters? You can just see by looking at him that he is struggling to accept that she is gone he has been left with a hole in his heart forever. Anorexia was not a well known disorder back then maybe if it was Karen could have been saved. Karen Carpenter's voice was Heaven sent. Her brother Richard was a brilliant musician/composer/arranger. Together they made music history. They were a fantastic team. They were business partners, siblings and best friends. Anyone with a heart and a sane clear mind can see that Richard was in a lot of pain in this interview. Anorexia Nervosa was an unknown quantity in the 1970's and 80's. Even today, how can you explain a disease that makes a rail thin person believe they're overweight? Perhaps it started with an idiot journalist calling her "chubby."

If Richard ever reads this he is right about too much added weight too fast.My sisters Brother-inlaw did the same thing after a stomach surgery to reduce weight.He started to eat regular meals but it was years later and I guess the heart did not do well with a surge in weight quickly.He died in his sleep while taking an afternoon nap.He was in his early 40's.I love you Richard! I remember when Karen died, I was very depressed. Their music always made me feel happy as a child/teen in the 70's....I was so unhappy and treated badly by so many people. Their music cheered me up........it still does. I'm glad I'm not unhappy anymore as an adult.
All I can say is the negativity below is a sign of the times. KC is dead and speaking ill of the dead shows a lack of maturity. The music will live on long after RC is gone and I think that focus on the musical treasures that they left behind is what all of us should do.
spectre56j I was literally a baby born in late 82 but my parents made sure that I know who “The Carpenters” were. Til this day it’s breaks my heart as now a 35 yr old woman. Their songs had such beauty...and her voice heavenly...I hope she is resting peacefully and know that there are many of those who love her til this day.

To her, it was saying, "you may be controlling me in most areas of my life, but you cannot make me eat". It was her way to rebel. When her mother made comments about her being too thin, it probably drove her to lose even more, just to spite her. Read up on her life before criticizing her. She DID seek treatment the last two years of her life had was getting healthy. Her body had just endured too much and gave out. Everything is not just black and white. You just don't get it, and probably never will.

They should have been ambushed when Karen was alive, she needed to stop living in denial. I'm not at all attempting to be rude , I have been through similar with my Daughter & we found that addressing the issue properly (No denial) was a great help to her recovery. Tough love is needed in a situation such as this .. there's no other way !

There is a clip out there when Karen and Richard were interviewed by a British reporter and Karen is asked by her if she has anorexia nervosa. Karen looks at her straight in the eyes and says, "No." At this point she was skeletal.
I remember reading that early on, there was a review of them, a male reviewer made a snarky comment on her being a little heavy; she started dieting and never recovered. What a tragedy, all the way around.
It was Sue Lawley for Nationwide in Britain in 1981. Questions were a little personal and Karen wasnt ready to talk about her issues with anorexia, only saying she was 'pooped'. Interview was stopped and resumed a couple of times because of this 😔

Candelyn Lawind - While it’s not a certainty in Karen’s situation, you’re wrong if you think it can’t happen that way. All the signs were there for Karen. She had a domineering mother who favored her older brother. Richard, while perhaps well meaning, ran the show for the most part. And Karen wasn’t the decision maker in the group. Some people who feel smothered, controlled, and insignificant might look for an outlet to escape those feelings. Even if that outlet is harmful and may end up killing them in the long run. So there you go. She couldn’t control her family. She could control her weight. Or so she thought.
Watching this breaks my heart, to people to think that he is somehow at fault is so sad... they were so close...

Anorexia Nervosa is one of the deadliest mental illnesses because the person suffering from this disease literally starves to death,I know my daughter is a true anorexic and it’s terrifying,thankfully as of today she is well but it is never cured and never goes away so I thank God for every healthy day she has, she was diagnosed in 7th grade and is 36 today,she has had relapses but as I said today is a good day. It's amazing how he didn't feel he could sit around for years waiting to get the album out. Immediately after her passing, he got to work and had it out within 9 months. Sitting around being a self-pitied basket case wasn't an option.
Back then when this was recorded they did not have a clue about the causes of anorexia. Of course now we know a great deal more. Richard answered to the best of his ability and he did it with a great deal of dignity. He was a wonderful big brother who adored his sister and encouraged her to be centre stage, for that alone I am grateful. A musical genius.
What a gift she has left us, I always think Whitney is the greatest but Karen is right up there with her, both struggled with fame, it can't be as easy at it looks.
I feel bad for Richard that all people want to do is ask about Karen, they never seem to ask "how are YOU doing?". I was devastated when I heard the news she had died. I was 23 at the time. I was probably in my 30's before I really learned much about anorexia. What a huge loss to not only the family but to the fans who couldn't get enough of that voice along with Richard.

I was 18; didn't know much about her at the time; but my older sister had their albums.
I was 18 as well in 1983 and had been familiar with the Carpenters since day 1. Anorexia then was something which affected models and young girls. It was a terrible shock to find that Karen had suffered from it.

Wow just out of high school when she died growing up I was in love with Linda Rhonstandt and Karen Carpenter. Watching these shows brings back memories of better times.

Edna Red (a commenter below) was directly on point with regard to the cause of anorexia and the manifestation of anorexia. One word, better known as "The Big "C" - CONTROL. Everyone wants to have a certain amount of it in their lives, but from what I have researched on Karen's life, professionally and otherwise, she felt like she had none. She actually became addicted to the idea that she could CONTROL her weight, therein lies the root of the disease/condition. By the time she realized she had a desperate problem, the damage had already been done to her body and its internal function. She ended up losing her life for the need to have CONTROL. The tragedy of this situation is hard to put words to.
Sealust50 - issues about weight are just a symptom. The root of the problem began with family dynamics. This is a reason, not blame. Karen was trying to please her mother and get her love and approval. It's documented in so many places how the mother favored the brother. Karen already sang well and her weight had been mentioned so that's where eating disorders start- with a diet that goes out of control. That's where the control part comes in. She might have felt like she didn't have a lot of choices in her life but she could control what did and didn't go into her body. That is the recipe for anorexia, no pun was actually intended.
She was and always will be a crystal clear gem surrounded by society's widespread filth she just could not put up with.

My heart still goes out to him after all of these years.
I'm suprised about the amount of dignity and understanding from the both of them, since this was from decades ago! People on TV nowadays aren't that knowleadgeable on this disorder.
He also had addiction Issues…sad lives….brilliant talent.
I was blown away (after watching part 1& 2) at how composed the family is during the interview, especially her mother. She has been gone less than a year when this was taped. I'm not trying to be judgmental or anything, but still, how a mother can talk of her daughter and not shed a tear I think is a bit telling re the "family dynamic" as far as emotions go. No doubt of course they loved her with all their heart, I guess lots of things just require no explaining by those left behind.
It was not 30 pounds gained to an already frail body …
It was the fact that her heart was silently screaming for so long .. excsusted and with no relief or end in sight …

A) He was part of The Carpenters, he can do what he wishes with their music. B)Apparently you didn't listen to any of their music because he did vocals on tons of their songs. C) different people mourn in different ways, this was his way of showing respect to his sister, lighten up.

Karen Carpenter would no doubt want the world to hear the album. It truly is a remarkable treasure, a music that has inspired and lifted me up when I'm feeling down. She was an amazing woman with the voice of a goddess.
Please don't try to lay "blame," especially not on Richard. We all face temptations and demons. Many overcome these. Some sadly never do.

I would put some of the blame on him, because he knew what she was doing, and DID NOTHING!!!!
karen d We don't know what others did, tried to do, or even could do. Only Karen could have stopped. Until she admitted to herself that she needed help, no one was going to be able to force help upon her. It is tragic what happened, but not anyone's place to lay blame. Just my thoughts.

Yes!!.......we don't realize how life is so short for some who have gain fame for such a short time, but the riches of these who have made such an impact in our lives with the gifts that they made and shared (The Carpenters) with us.......will forever be remembered in history.......for enturnity.

People forget that Richard too had problems and issues.
I believe that Richard was the golden boy. I’ve listened to most of their songs and there’s not many that are joyful or happy songs. The only one that really stands out for me is, I’m on top of the world, but you guys may know more joyful songs.

The Carpenters was a good part of my youth and I loved her voice! As for this interview, Richard doesn't look very convincing and I don't believe for a minute that he didn't know how and why his own sister's condition began.
Karen had a curvey figure and I remember seeing a picture if her on a song or album cover. She was walking and yoy could see that she has hips and thighs like a lot of women did. I believe someone called her chubby or fat, plus her mother playing favourites with Richard were a trigger. If Richard had at least stuck up for her, I think that she may not have started to starve herself. Just speaking from experience:(
Even though we didn't speak a word of english when we were young but we used to listened to her songs so much. So sad for her family if we loved her this much i am sure that only God can heal their sadness. R.I.P karen.

great interview!!!!! TRAGIC obviously but Karen Carpenter was the leader in bringing awareness to this horrible illness that plague millions of women to this day and can get real help.
Her singing voice is pretty incredible. RIP Karen.
