  • “Are we foolish for making homes out of those moving targets, who are other people? Or is it what happens when you stop asking the question, and begin living?” Afrose Fatima Ahmed is a traveling poet who, along with her trusty typewriter, has traveled across the contiguous United States in pursuit of an idea of home. Born out of grief after a personal tragedy, Afrose’s project-”Poem Store,” impromptu typewritten poetry for strangers-is an opportunity to connect with other people in a common quest for belonging.

I was lucky enough to pass by her table one day on a quick trip to San Francisco and after only 30-60 seconds of talking to her, she wrote a poem no one should have been able to write. I felt like she understood me better than anyone on this earth and was able to articulate what I'd never been able to say. The poem she wrote has truly become one of my most prized possessions. I read it often and it brings me joy and reassurance every time. I still consider myself blessed to have met her and been touched by her beauty and insight into human worth and authentic emotions.

    This is my beautiful cousin!!
Was lucky enough to receive a poem from her when I went through a really difficult time in my life. & I can assure you her poems are just as beautiful as her soul.

A lovely tribute. Deals with love, yearning, belonging, and all the important things in life. 'Chalker block' full of evocative ideas and sentiments. We need these poems at a time when the world is burning.

There is a very similar idea in the book "The Life and Adventures of Trobadora Beatrice as Chronicled by Her Minstrel Laura: A Novel in Thirteen Books and Seven Intermezzos" by Irmtraud Morgner. In it, one of the characters invents a kind of poetry vending machine that charges per poem, and priced according to subject matter. If I remember correctly, love poems were the most expensive.

This is inspiring, delightful and amazing, without being merely an oddity. It's a unique form of serendipitous epistolary catharsis made possible by the unexpected altruism of a friendly stranger. And it's wonderful !

I'm not a huge fan of poetry but occasionally it touches me. The snippets I saw were incredible.

    1) Nice hustle if you can work it. 2) Most of the US is no longer contiguous but contagious.
