    The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
    ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
    A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
    Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
    Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
    The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
    The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
    “With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

    I have to add - I think there was a step that was missed with the chocolate ice cream. The salt and the snow was used outside the container, to help it freeze. The delicious chocolate filling that you drank would have taken about 15 - 20 minutes to make in an old wooden barrel ice cream maker. Just google old wooden barrel ice cream maker, my dad had one, and snow and ice was used to surround the container containing the delicious stuff to make it freeze. We would manually turn the handle on the icecream maker containing the spear, surrounded with snow and salt, with the delicious chocolate filling inside the sphere. And the snow and ice created some type of super freezing mechanism. We would always say, not enough salt in the snow or too much salt … 😂😂😂 hope I explained it clear enough … 😅😅😅

    • @Maximusrex4575
      @Maximusrex4575 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree, I don't think the chocolate was supposed to go directly into the ice and salt, the recipe even says to place the vessel with the chocolate into the ice. Reminds me of being a kid when we would use a small sealed container with the ingredients and place it into a larger container with ice and salt, then we would roll them for a while.

    If you want to re-create the chocolate ice cream recipe at the beginning of the video, a stone slab (metate) and metal or stone roller will process the raw cacao better; in the original illustration that was shown in the antique book with the original recipe, that is what the man who was rolling the chocolate would have been using, rather than a wooden board and rolling pin. The stone metate (with legs that hold the surface up at a slanted angle) would have had a container of coals set underneath it to heat the stone up; that, plus the texture of the stone itself would both grind and melt the cacao, bringing out the cocoa butter and turning the cacao into a thick liquid that could be scraped/poured into the container with the snow. That, when shaken and combined with the snow, would have frozen into "curls" like the recipe said, and might have turned out with a better texture, although the flavor would still have been bitter.
    The hot chocolate recipe contains Jamaica pepper, which I have heard is another word for allspice, and the "amber" is ambergris, which was an exotic flavoring in those days, but is now illegal to buy except under certain conditions, because it comes from whales, which have to be dead in order to harvest it.

    • @americanwoman9342
      @americanwoman9342 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’ve watched a gentleman in Australia pick up ambergris on the coastlines of all the surrounding islands of Australia.. His dog has been trained to find it.. I’ve always wondered why it was illegal to sell.. He gives his away just like the nautilus shells he finds..

      Whales cough it up and go on their way. Its spermaceti that is extracted from hunted whales.

    • @michelleg7
      @michelleg7 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I was going to say she needs a metate but most didnt carry those in England even during those time periods or even now, that is a special order thing.

    • @e.urbach7780
      @e.urbach7780 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@michelleg7 Yes, however in those days both the metate and the chocolate itself were luxury goods, so the coffee shops that sold chocolate, and anybody who was buying chocolate, very likely would have had one. The Chocolate Room (reproduction) at Hampton Court Palace has one, for example. It might even be easier to find one in England these days, what with the diversity of the population especially in London, but chocolate is now so much cheaper, and in a "just-add-water" form, that having a metate is no longer necessary. But if they intend to reproduce the original recipe in their cafe, I think they should invest in a metate!

    Oh my goodness now you have icecream as well as "the sandwich" your family is incredible! Julie if you could one day write a family cookbook. Luke Jamaica pepper is allspice and the amber sounds like saffron or possibly tumeric. During this time Spain had a heavy middle eastern population(that became Spanairds) and a spice trade with middle eastern countries as far as India. I believe Luke to very practical and the type of man not to "count his chicks before his eggs hatch" per sae? You 2 are completely wonderful together in the kitchen. ❤ Julie i love your enthusiasm its so exciting!

    Love 😂your show Julie and Luke are so funny together ,the way you bounce ideas off one anther. Turnips are also a great feed for cows used to fatten them up.We used to forecast the seed-in pastures .😊and lock out the cows .Turnips are healthy in stews and baked for people.cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

    Great video. I absolutely love turnips too. Unfortunately no one else in my family does. I really wish I could taste the Garlic Pesto but, it's too hot in Texas for the wild garlic. I love watching you and Luke. You compliment each perfectly. It's nice to see a match made in heaven. Wishing you great success at Mapperton. Peace & Love!

    My mother only warmed plates when we had guests over because she plated in the kitchen, then brought out the plates. For family meals, the dishes would be brought to the table and we would help ourselves to the hot food.

    Children make ice cream in primary school, in norway, a a bag of ice/snow and salt a smaller bag within the bag with ice cream mixture . Shake both bags vigorously for a while. Voila!

    Did anyone see any of her original appearances as a commentator about the royal family or like their homes and stuff? Anyway, she came across as very highlighted hair and veneered spray tanned, DIFFERENT. I’m glad she decided to go with being herself and turned out that was pretty captivating.

    The 11th Earl of Sandwhich and his wife are always delightful with a vast wealth of history and knowledge between them. This was such a lively and interesting episode full of your shared banter and laughter and "one upmanship". The ancient recipes are facinating, but the ice cream needs some tweaking I think. The Guinae pepper, also known as "Grains of Paradise", is Aframomum Melueta which is a member of the ginger family. Would be interesting to get hold of some and try it out. How was the "cake"? I like the idea of the wild garlic pesto, I will have to try to grow some. You two are never boring so I am looking forward to the next video. Thank you both.🌹

    A Codd; In 1872 Hiram Codd introduced a design featuring a glass marble to keep it airtight. The Codd-neck bottle, as it was called, enclosed a marble and a rubber washer/gasket in the neck. The pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. BBC This does not seem to be the Codd they are referring to. All I can think is that perhaps the vanilla was in a Codd bottle.

    LoL ! You two are hilarious 😂😂😂 Tack is what we call hard bread in Newfoundland. We have it mainly with salt fish. Luke is correct, the sailors did use it on long voyages to Newfoundland. I now live in BC Canada and cannot find it here, so I make my own. 5 cups of flour, 2 cups of water, bake for 1 1/2 hours, store in cold place, paper bag. It will turn green if you put it in a plastic bag, the ugliest of plastic as storage containers becomes quite obvious 😅😢😅. It continues to be made at Purity Factory’s in St. John’s Newfoundland, but I have discovered I like my own better, but cannot imagine it with chocolate ice cream 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
