Georg; Electronic components like resistors & capacitors can change their values over long periods of time especially if they're low quality to start with & exposed to significant heat from high ambient temperatures & higher current than expected. The coloured bands on resistors not only signify the resistance value but also the last band indicates how closely it's been manufactured to meet that value (+/-%), so if a circuit uses cheaper components to start with then it might not ddo precisely what it's designed to do even from the factory!
Trim potentiometers aren't usually high precision, so if you need to set a value close to the upper end of the nominal value of the pot, with a bit of bad luck, the actual max value of the pot could be lower... More careful overall circuit design could probably have dealt with it, or it might be an issue of the tolerances of multiple other components coming together in just such a way that for this unit the range of the pot just doesn't do it...
9:57 there is an additional function for the rubber holder: it's used to hold the tone arm into place when replacing the stylus: you have to place the record player upside down on the table and let the tone arm rest on it, and you can replace the stylus.
You’re kidding right? Crosley products are almost wholely responsible for the ‘vinyl revival’. They make cheap turntables that are aesthetically pleasing, and like a girl meets a boy, the first thing that matters is if she likes how he looks. People start with cruisers, get a taste for it then dump that for something better once they realize they can do better. Audiophiles might shit on Crosley but without them the communities wouldn’t be what they are now
@@dustinwheat4096 I agree that Crosley contributed by making entry level products. I personally never owned one, and started my Vinyl collection 15 years ago. People used to call me weird for buying vinyl back then. and look how times have changed.
You'd think Audio Technica would bring the Sound Burger back. It seems like it wouldn't cost that much to manufacture looking at the innards, and would be a very profitable exercise even if sold at half the going rate for the originals!
I don't understand why anyone would make a fake of a Crosley. My sister's Crosley cruiser has the same weird tonearm, like the arm is at a weird angle, so I wouldn't be surprised. Plus all the cheap turntables have the same mechanism meaning they come from the same factory, so I can't see why it would be bad unless this was a bad batch or a one-off.

Actually, interesting story about my Sound Burger. When it was given to me, I thought I should change the stylus. So I took it to the only shop where I lived that I felt could sell me what I needed. I felt I had to be really apologetic because, as you said in your video, it looks like a toy. The shop sold high end HiFi equipment. I had been in there before to buy other things, but you got the feeling that the guys running the shop were capable of being very dismissing about anything that didn’t reach their standards. So I said something like “really sorry to bring this in, but I’d like stylus so I can try it out”. Their reaction was overwhelmingly positive. They told me that it was made by a company that was very well known for its turntables, and in fact it was very good in its own right. They even thanked me for brining it in as they had never seen one in the wild before. They sold me a stylus, and it did indeed work, but as I said in my other post, the pots are knackered. So I put it away. One day, I told myself, I’ll get it working properly again. I feel that I really should now. So, thanks for posting the links for the drive belts - mine needs a new set as well. I may have to get it a new stylus too, just to be sure - no rubber support with mine, so the stylus has been resting on the turntable for a very long time.

I have had the red AT727 since 1993, when I bought it used, and it still sounds and works brilliantly! Yes, I sometimes take this with me not just to record-fairs, but record shoppes, also. It's nice to see this video for future referring on replacing the belts...many thanks for sharing!!
I don't know how you managed it, but that _is_ a knock-off Crosley! (Who thought _that_ was a brilliant idea?) I have one of the first generation Crosley Revolutions (the CR6002A,) and while not perfect... and not something I'd play NM records on, it's a fun little thing to take to parties with a box of beater records, or to record fairs for a quick listen.
Yeah, I had to check as I have one too and didn't think that looked right (aside from the misspellings.) Mine has a clear bit above the label area and is a shiny red, not that matte olive this looks like. For what it's worth, it also has an FM transmitter with two frequencies to select from, but that never worked so well as FCC rules require it to be so low output as to be worthless. Incidentally, mine was dead for a while and when I plugged it in today, has decided to work again for some reason. Wouldn't recommend seeking this one out, but I used a bunch of in-store credit to get mine, so it is what it is.
Why the hell would anyone knock off something that's basically a Victrola knockoff to begin with? I have a third party record player from Target because it has a cassette deck, and it's even made better than most Crosleys I've seen. At least I know it's third party.
The Dollar Guy - I think it was sarcasm. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything with “Crosley” on it that was of even reasonable quality. Crosley...sumthin, sumthin balls.
The turning being too fast might be down to the fact that the batteries are new and better than the average stuff that was available back then. I'm sure the speed will normalize as the batteries get drained a bit.
I have a Victrola record player from 1913 and it has an adjustable speed regulator on it. It's very unlikely that this player had no regulation 70 years later, because high-impedance potentiometers were used to control speed and those wouldn't allow for much power to go through. This means they were almost certainly controlling some kind of voltage regulator. By the way, you can see how the mechanical speed regulator works in this video by Technology Connections: th-cam.com/video/0vbyoZDQaIY/w-d-xo.htmlm34s
Audio-Technica have re-released the Sound Burger for their 60th anniversary, updated with Bluetooth and USB-C! You should get one and do an old-vs-new comparison video!
Somehow the cheap-aesthetic of the original speaks to me, it gives it a character :) Lovely turntable! Also, I'm really missing the puppets, but I'll wait patiently!
Good video mate. Back in the day I worked for a hi-fi shop in Scotland & we got about 20 of these in from the AT rep. I was there for about 18 months and I'm pretty sure we didn't move any at all. It did sound pretty good though with half-decent headphones.
Hey Mat, bought a Sound Burger out of Portugal, replaced the belts and stylus and I couldn’t be any happier with the results. I love you and the channel. Keep up the good work! On the cusp of pulling the trigger on an PS-F5(9)!!!
I have zero interest in record players or pasta makers or half of the stuff you review but I will always watch a new video by you. It's just well presented entertainment and information I otherwise wouldn't have had. I just love you channel.
After watching your excellent video I replaced the belts on my original Sound Burger which I've had since the 90's mainly unused and decided to sell it and got £290 for it on that well known auction site....... many thanks.........
Lovely video Mat plus the fact that you have cleared up a mystery for me. Back in 1978 in Abu Dhabi, my father had a Technics turntable with a little window that displayed these strange red dots that appeared to move. Well, now I know, they perform the same function as your white disc with the bars. Cheers mate.
I just thought they only gave this nice looking piece of tech this idiotic name just to make people hungry and go to McKing or Burger Donalds and then I read the comments....
Dear Mr Techmoan... I love all your videos with all depth, rant and funny skits. I often click your links to other people in various vides. In this case the Vwestlife channel... While his video was great in content... bloody hell the poor sound. You stand out, way out, in all aspects content, proper lighting and sound. All my thumbs up and thanks for everything.
Funny someone thought of the headphone cable holder, but not a threaded hole to store the tonearm lock screw! But added in the instructions to keep it in a safe place from getting lost.
Techmoan's video was literally the first thing that popped in my head when I saw the announcement. Nice to see A-T bringing the Sound Burger back to the market. Let's hope it stays around on the market for a while.
That incredible music at 10:57 is Hugh Maselkela - Tomorrow. Funky little machine, I quite like it, personally I don't have much space to get a big hifi or something in my room. This little thing would be perfect for me, because its small enough to easily store away until needed. Shame about the modern remake being shit, although you suspect it may be a copy I doubt it is, I just don't believe modern remakes of anything can hold a candle to their old machine.
I had an original sound burger and can verify that it was so well built and cleverly put together that plugging it into a high end amplifier was no crime. I played the stranglers album Feline over and over again until I think I wore the needle down however as I moved over to CDs I sold this tremendous machine for only £50 but now I am crying as they are now changing hands for $400 !!
He may have his playlist set for hours, but I can guaranty his butt will not last that long sitting on a cement step in what looks like a high traffic area.
fair enough but i called mister disc the mister disk with the k since mortal kombat came up with the k to replace the c but they made mortalk kombat vinyl soundtrack including the killer instinct.
mazda9624 do people really believe that, because as far as I'm aware vinyls sound quality are still superior than anything we have today, if I'm not mistaken.
Crosley is garb I knew that cheap knockoff wouldn't be a good turntable because of their reputation for having too much tracking force and they destroy records carving up the grooves
Utterly fascinating video. Funny that I don't have the slightest recollection of the "Sound Burger." Three and a half decades later I learn about something that I had no idea existed back in the day.
I had the original Mister disc in Purpke in mint shape that I won on eBay around 2010 for under $100. I was the only bidder and back in 2010, not many even knew about this machine and the vinyl craze had not happened yet. Sadly it got stolen about 6 years ago from my storage and I loved that thing, even just looking at it and not using for it. I’m very visual and love the 70’s and 80’s and for me ot was like looking at art and made me feel how I felt in the 70’s and 80’s, So I was so happy to find out these are back bc I don’t have the budget to get another original bc they’ve gone up 4 to 5 times what I paid 13 years ago. I actually was pricing some audio technica cartridges when this burger unit came in the feed with the cartridges. So I’m def getting one and I love all the vintage Japanese gadgets from the 70’s and 80’s. I need to find a book with all of the vintage Japanese gadgets, so I can just look at them and be more educated on what was out back then.
Really cool! When I was a young stud cruising the mean streets of our little village, my cousin was looking for a way to play the music we wanted to hear as we drove around. Well he did find a battery operated record player, and we put that in the front seat between us in his 1955 Mercury, and we cruised. Only problem, the streets were rough and that Merc was a smooth ride, but not smooth enough for a record player. We gave up after two nights of ah shits. Ten years later I bought my first in car cassette player, I ordered it from the PACEX catalog while I was in Vietnam, and it was waiting for me when I got home but that's a whole different story.
Turntables that have an automatic changer necessarily have spindles that don't rotate. You have probably avoided them because you dislike the idea of dropping records on one another.
Oh the fond memories. I used to have a Sound Burger. Mine came in silver finish which looked much more serious. It had pretty decent sound quality as far as I remember. The transport was quite stable but on rare occasions it would suddenly speed up a tiny bit, just about enough to be noticed. One drawback of the design was that the down side was picking up dust from the table while the record was rotating. Overall though that was the record player I spent my youth listening to and I'm glad I had it.
I bought a Crosley revolution for my girlfriend a few months ago. It's very different to the model shown here. Didn't come with earbuds, the batteries went in fine, no weird label-maker labels, no hum or other audio issues, much better tracking, consistent speed, the switches all in different places, and generally just looking a bit nicer and sturdier than the one in the video; most importantly the spindle does rotate. The only record player I've seen with a stationary spindle (it's a terrible design; you have to grease the spindle to get any semblance of 33rpm) is the ridiculously bad knockoff Crosley portable that I bought the revolution to replaceme. I think you got a knock-off Mr. Moan.
That Fidelity record player was also my first one. My Dad used to work near the Fidelity factory in Acton and got one at cost price one Christmas for me. It was a decent little player for the time
My mum actually has a Ferguson Studio 2000 system, and now that's the one I currently use for my records until I can afford my own. May not be the best but after all these years it still sounds and runs well after replacing the stylus!
So someone is making Crosley copies of copies made by Crosley? Damn, they're desperate!!! :P As for the stylus on the Crosley, that looks like the one that was on my Neostar thing, I replaced that with a "proper" cartridge (but had a sapphire stylus), and the improvement was negligible, so even though the cartridge cost me £1 a piece, it's still not worth it for these cheap turntables... :) Link to my Neostar Cartridge Upgrade video - th-cam.com/video/mQRaLa-OTfY/w-d-xo.html
In the 1970's, someone my Dad knew, had a record player in his car. I think it was Philips - but I could be imagining the whole thing! Also, in the 90's someone had an application which allowed him to scan a 45 with one of the old A4 flatbed optical scanners & play the music from a record. I never saw it working - but the concept seemed cool at the time.
Finally! I was wondering when you'd eventually show us the very much sought-after Sound Burger! Kudos on getting it for so cheap! As for Crosley... phonetically, Crosley is French-Canadian for "screw him" (crosse-lé)!
It's impossible to region lock a record. What you got from a shop in Germany, Japan, the UK, or the US would work on any record player in any region in the world.
Queen Extravaganza Live Crosley Cruisers suck, though they do make an actually decent regular turntable that doesn’t damage records any more than an LP120 and the like

Goodness.
It's just an opinion, friend.
No need to be so hostile.
The Dollar Guy - I think it was sarcasm. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything with “Crosley” on it that was of even reasonable quality.
Crosley...sumthin, sumthin balls.
The Dollar Guy I wouldn't even buy it for a dollar!
Crosley products are all shit for stupid hipsters
"to prevent people from suing them after trying to eat it."
As an American... yeah, you right.
Yuh you grammar not
The turning being too fast might be down to the fact that the batteries are new and better than the average stuff that was available back then. I'm sure the speed will normalize as the batteries get drained a bit.
Unlikely, but anything is possible. It is just more 50 year old electronics made out-of-bounds due to the length of time passed.
munxcorp
No. Likely due to discrete electronic components like electrolytic capacitors that are out of spec because the gel has dried out .
Still, munxcorp is right. As the batteries drain the voltage drops and the record *will* turn more slowly than with fresh batteries.
This is what I thought - that and compensation for the stabiliser
It looks like pretty good plastic, for the 1980s. VCRs had some ugly plastic, but (just) strong enough. Laptops inspired a lot of polymer research.
it's a nice look, reminiscent of the nokia lumias
or the lumias are reminiscent of the sound burger, rather
My bad, I'm not too familiar with 80's plastics :) but that's interesting! I guess, as Techmoan said, it just comes off cheap in its colour.
Your videos are consistently fantastic. This one is no exception.
As always, great video from you. Every video you upload is as good as the last one. 👍🏻👍🏻
Josh Bacon u are so right... And his English accent makes it so premium to look =) I love techmoan too!!!!
Josh Bacon eggs
Good video mate. Back in the day I worked for a hi-fi shop in Scotland & we got about 20 of these in from the AT rep. I was there for about 18 months and I'm pretty sure we didn't move any at all. It did sound pretty good though with half-decent headphones.
Gordon Bain and now they fetch big buxx.
The Soundburger (not Crosley) is pretty good, but then it's made by Audio Technica, so they have a reputation to uphold.
So does Crosley, apparently. They certainly live up to it, too!
That goes without saying. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I've heard of Audio Technica, but not the other company.
Hey Mat, bought a Sound Burger out of Portugal, replaced the belts and stylus and I couldn’t be any happier with the results. I love you and the channel. Keep up the good work! On the cusp of pulling the trigger on an PS-F5(9)!!!
I love the videos done by this man, so informative and detailed. Fantastic
I have zero interest in record players or pasta makers or half of the stuff you review but I will always watch a new video by you. It's just well presented entertainment and information I otherwise wouldn't have had. I just love you channel.
"one day i played black sabbath on 78 speed man"
"and then what did you see?"
"I saw God"
After watching your excellent video I replaced the belts on my original Sound Burger which I've had since the 90's mainly unused and decided to sell it and got £290 for it on that well known auction site....... many thanks.........
It’s crazy to me how long Audio Technica has existed for. I really thought they only did microphones and started up with in the past 15 years or so.
"take a look at a Crosley"
NO PLEASE MY EYES MY EEEYYYEEEESSSSSS
You're making Phillip very Crosley...
Chris Nixon Oh shit that was so good xDDD
just shhhh no one cares!
The fact that it's puke green doesn't really help the situation any :D
are you sure that crosley is a clone of mister disc mister disk? by audio technica.
As always your videos are a pleasure to watch. You sir, set the standard for all TH-camrs to aspire to.
Will the muppetts ever make a return to the end of your videos? I miss them.
You make excellent videos. Please keep it up. :D
Next week.
Woo! I look forward to it, Mr. Mat with 1 T. :D
Thanx.
HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPE
Techmoan I will have to watch that now! Love the Muppet-styled puppets!
AYY PHILLY IN THE BUILDING!!
And now ATH just announced a re-release of this yesterday! Quite excited for the new one.
The people at Crosley should be ashamed of themselves.
Literally con men.
Now they have a NASCAR team
Your reviews are extremely helpful thank you for the effort and time you put into your videos.
It's lunch time, I saw "Burger" and immediately clicked.
We had Donato's
A burger has a taste this thing will be dropped in the street with the empty Berger boxes in the gutter
I just thought they only gave this nice looking piece of tech this idiotic name just to make people hungry and go to McKing or Burger Donalds and then I read the comments....
Marky Shaw, and what?
had mac n cheese.
Sound Burger & The Clones is my new band name, thanks!
Funny someone thought of the headphone cable holder, but not a threaded hole to store the tonearm lock screw! But added in the instructions to keep it in a safe place from getting lost.
Now I'm gonna wait for the review for the announced 2022 re-release of the Sound Burger (now with Bluetooth, still no lettuce tho)
Techmoan's video was literally the first thing that popped in my head when I saw the announcement. Nice to see A-T bringing the Sound Burger back to the market. Let's hope it stays around on the market for a while.
I didn’t know Hugh Masekela and I’m starting to love this record from hearing bits on your videos.
Thank you!
Will the puppets ever return? 😔
He may have his playlist set for hours, but I can guaranty his butt will not last that long sitting on a cement step in what looks like a high traffic area.
Not even a big audio guy, but well, now I know not to ever buy anything from crosley
I just bought the 2023 version of the SoundBurger yesterday from Amazon. It’s arriving sometime later today. Excited!
If I rebooted this design, I’d call it the Soundwich 😉
fair enough but i called mister disc the mister disk with the k since mortal kombat came up with the k to replace the c but they made mortalk kombat vinyl soundtrack including the killer instinct.
I have no real interest on vinyl and such but I just love these videos for their technical teardown / repair side :) such entertainment
10:57 song is Hugh Masekela - Bird On The Wing (skip to 1:19 of the song)
There's actually an electronic music group called "Sound Burger". One of their albums have a "sound Burger" type record player on the album cover.
Crosley makes horrible sounding turntables that cater to the hipsters who think "It's a record, it's supposed to sound bad!"
Not all Crosleys are bad, the more expensive models are obviously better.
Clay3613 no crosley is good.
To be fair, Clay didn't say they were good, just 'not bad', in so many words.
mazda9624 do people really believe that, because as far as I'm aware vinyls sound quality are still superior than anything we have today, if I'm not mistaken.
Crosley is garb I knew that cheap knockoff wouldn't be a good turntable because of their reputation for having too much tracking force and they destroy records carving up the grooves
This has and always will be one of my favorite channels
That crosley has more background noise than my old idler drive BSR turntable!
Utterly fascinating video. Funny that I don't have the slightest recollection of the "Sound Burger." Three and a half decades later I learn about something that I had no idea existed back in the day.
Thanks for your time and effort. I appreciate your videos and enjoy watching them.
they should have made the sound crocodile
I had the original Mister disc in Purpke in mint shape that I won on eBay around 2010 for under $100. I was the only bidder and back in 2010, not many even knew about this machine and the vinyl craze had not happened yet. Sadly it got stolen about 6 years ago from my storage and I loved that thing, even just looking at it and not using for it. I’m very visual and love the 70’s and 80’s and for me ot was like looking at art and made me feel how I felt in the 70’s and 80’s,
So I was so happy to find out these are back bc I don’t have the budget to get another original bc they’ve gone up 4 to 5 times what I paid 13 years ago.
10:57 Bird On The Wing by Hugh Masekela
Um.....the yellow is the best color by far! Thanks for continuing to try the crazy stuff!!
The sound burger sounds delicious.
fur burger sounds better
“POWER CONSUMPTIOM”
I had a red Sound Burger in 1983 for a birthday and always loved it. Thanks for sharing this.
yes but it was called soundburger outside of usa while it's called mister disc in usa.
@@josephfrye7342 makes sense I’m in the UK.
@@MsVader indeed
I don’t know why they renamed this in the us, “sound burger” really would have appealed to the populace
Love the video. I have 3 sound burgers but they are all needing work done on them now and that is why I visited this page, most helpful.
That Hugh Masakela album...wew lad.
It's surprising how easy it is to tell if a record is playing too fast or too slow. Even 0.5 rpm is easily detectable.
Turntables that have an automatic changer necessarily have spindles that don't rotate. You have probably avoided them because you dislike the idea of dropping records on one another.
I'm quite sure he knows.
I’ve got one - but I’d forgotten about it. th-cam.com/video/oXSyyWLTtkc/w-d-xo.htmlm30s
615K SUBSCRIBERS CONGRATZ MATT !!! This has really taken off. CHEERS M8
This was a very interesting and informative video about this turn table and now I’m interested.
Love the title of this one. Sound Burger and the Clones sounds like a gleefully campy 80s movie.
Crosley’s entire business model seems to be selling things to people who don’t know any better. Unfortunately there’s a lot of them about.
Moan.
There were two Crosley revolutions, the CR6002A and the CR6020A
It sounds like you’re describing the CR6002A, but I have the CR6020A
That Fidelity record player was also my first one. My Dad used to work near the Fidelity factory in Acton and got one at cost price one Christmas for me. It was a decent little player for the time
17:56-18:04 the sound of vinyl being sanded down
My mum actually has a Ferguson Studio 2000 system, and now that's the one I currently use for my records until I can afford my own. May not be the best but after all these years it still sounds and runs well after replacing the stylus!
So someone is making Crosley copies of copies made by Crosley? Damn, they're desperate!!! :P
As for the stylus on the Crosley, that looks like the one that was on my Neostar thing, I replaced that with a "proper" cartridge (but had a sapphire stylus), and the improvement was negligible, so even though the cartridge cost me £1 a piece, it's still not worth it for these cheap turntables... :)
Link to my Neostar Cartridge Upgrade video - th-cam.com/video/mQRaLa-OTfY/w-d-xo.html
Man I love these videos. So indepth and comparing them makes for some great perspective.
No muppets? :(
I know ! I guess the naysayers are too vocal so those of us who love the muppet shorts get shorted
I think we might need to collectively complain about something he says like "all knackered".
Nah, I agree the 'Muppet' segment should be saved for the more in-depth product review videos. They take time to script up and perform on camera.
Haha -- good point; true enough
I'm often tempted to downvote on principal for lack of muppets.
Ever since I discovered your channel a week or so ago, I've been binge watching. I *will* hold you responsible if my relationship goes to pot.
Did they ever try to do any kind of region locking on records?
qqq1701 no, it’s not really possible
Yes, records made in foreign countries were all gibberish. I couldn't understand the singers at all. :p
It's impossible to region lock a record. What you got from a shop in Germany, Japan, the UK, or the US would work on any record player in any region in the world.
They could have tried incompatible speeds or bass-corrections...
my grandfather would have loved your channel!
Crosley. Don't buy that.
Queen Extravaganza Live Crosley Cruisers suck, though they do make an actually decent regular turntable that doesn’t damage records any more than an LP120 and the like
I love your theory about the manufacturing process behind the Crosley.
Shout out to vwestlife woohoo!
Uh Techmoan gave the shout out... Also how's he a douche?
He never said they were good. He said they aren't as bad as people make them out. Which is true. People are just snobby hipsters
