Thank you! I am a big fan of yours and your vids are in my rotation! Thanks for the sub! I'm honored! You might be interested to know that I grew up in England! 4 years RAF BENTWATERS (60's) and at 4 more at RAF LAKENHEATH (70's) Lakenheath was where my love for audio began. The base had a "hobby shop" (a slot car track and an audio store) and I talked my folks into buying "the family" a whole Sony SQ Quadraphonic System with a reel to reel and everything that I selected! It was one of my greatest con jobs ever because I was the only one that used it! Thanks again!

@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Hey Bob, to me Quadraphonic was it. I didn't have a quad system but I did meet someone that did. He had a 'Sly and The Family Stone' quad album, his speakers were the wall speakers that looked art. I fell in love with the concept just couldn't afford it plus the lack of source material didn't help. I really liked it though.

Hey Bob, nice going on the channel. First audio experiences were a suitcase record player, back in like 1970. Very clunky and did all 4 speeds (16, 33, 45 and 78), so that was quite fun for a six year old. First albums were a few Sesame Street LPs and a Country Music best of with 'Big Bad John' on it. My first cassette player was for Xmas of 1972, similar to yours but it had piano keys. Have fun, sir.

My parents had a first generation Sound Burger, so it was my first introduction to record players. Back then it sounded great, better than many turntables I've had since. It may have been a novelty design, but the construction and performance was very good and not one record was damaged.

It *has* to have a clamp - because the friction is only at the label; and the rim of the record is not in contact with the platter as it is on a conventional 'table. Is there contact of the "cover" and the clamp *while* it is playing?
My family's first stereo was a GE portable - the speakers were hinged on the ends and the record changer hinged down in the front. It had a volume, balance and a tone control; and I think 3W of power.
We "bought" it with Green Stamps.

Great to see another unpretentious hi-fi channel hit the TH-cams! The more the merrier!
Y'know what I would love to see come back? Something in the mold of Realistic hi-fi gear. A whole range of inexpensive stuff that actually performs quite well. Sure, we're getting some great stuff for lower price points from various brands today, but Radio Shack really knew what they were doing in building that brand with all kinds of options. I still have a pair of Minimus 25's that I grew up with. Not the richest-sounding speakers in the world, but EQ them properly and they get the job done. And the system they were originally bought for lasted from about 1984 to 1990 with daily use of pretty much all the components: a discrete AM/FM tuner, dual tape deck, a pre-amp with three-band tone controls, a power amp... and, of course, a turntable that lasted longer than any of the rest of the components (we kept using it for several years more with the new bookshelf system that replaced the other components). This was all stuff that my father bought on his just-out-of-college, two-years-married-with-a-child-on-the-way budget. He also bought larger floor speakers somewhere, which I experienced the Realistic system through moreso than the Minimus set, which I'm sure he wouldn't have been able to do had the system not been so affordable. My very first DJ demo tape was made on that system. Not many kids get to experience that kind of thing these days. How many future generations are missing out because we don't have something similar today?

My first record player was also a portable battery operated machine. It was made by Philips and the lid housed the speaker which was able to be stood separately from the deck and had a fairly long wire. This is when I discovered that if I backed the speaker up to my bed the under bed acted as a bass booster which started out my whole interest in playing with speakers when I was about 12 years old in the early 70’s. My first cassette player was a little mono player made by binatone. Yep, for sure these players used to give me chills of excitement when I listened to abba and the Shadows🤣🤣🤣 even though they didn’t come close sonically to any of my systems now.

Can you plug into your receiver and play on your big system? When I first got on eBay, I found a purple one and I think called Mister Sound for under $100. in mint condition. Back when they were rare in the USA and many didn’t even know they existed. Sadly I got it stolen in my storage and my other vintage Japanese electronics.
It was kind of rare even in the 80’s and I only 2 ppl. with one. The first one was someone listening to records with it at a record store
But I still have 2 uptight Mitsubishi liner turntable with the glass door. Oh and I love the vintage Sony mini portable that’s stand upright. Also, the reason you didn’t see many of these gadgets back then was these were the toys of the rich and expensive for most ppl. Like the original Sony Walkman was like $160. and many waited until the cheaper plastic versions came out to get one.

Nice video! I subscribed. Norelco is actually Philips (electronics of the Netherlands), the brand (North American Philips [electrical] Company) was set up because in the US at that time a brand Philco existed so Philips was not allowed.
Later that was corrected, Philips simply bought Philco and kept the Norelco brand mainly for shavers. Magnavox was also purchased and used as an audio brand. Later Philips decided to go again with the Philips brand, also for Hifi. Philips had some really good offerings and popularity in Europe and the rest of the world but was unable to compete with the Japanese powers in the US. In the Eighties Philips bought the majority stake in Marantz.
Childhood story: I played in the boxes that my dad's HPM100 came in. And I still own them now, together with one CD101 player by Philips.
The day this player came into the family, grandma/dad were sitting the couch. Dad connected the Philips CD101 cd player to his quite capable Technics SA-500 receiver paired with the HPM100s. The was us in early 1980's the Netherlands, happy with that US Airforce PX where we had friends.
Anyway, the CD player was connected, a Dire Straits CD was spinning, no sound...
Dad was nervously looking for the reason, little me was hovering around him. Then my eye fell on the tape-monitoring switch, so I reached and clicked the lever to the middel position. As struck by lightning, "So Far Away" filled our living room, my grandparents jumped about a meter into the air. Yes, that's the whole 3 feet 😁 Unforgetable clear music, this I will never, ever forget... Great channel, keep it up! Maybe I'll stay and tell you some stories about many more great Philips stuff that I have collected over the years.

So, you would modify your gear too? OK, I tell you, that´s the greatest fun at all with the gear at all! And it is quite affordable too. Last year, I bought an Yamaha RX300 Receiver as birthday gift for a friend of mine, and since we had 2022, I thought: This must have Bluetooth! INTEGRATED! And so is did. Opened the case, screwed in an assembly for Bluetooth and an assembly for 5Volt, drilled a few holes in the back, in order to get out the RCA-Cable to the "TV Port", Put all together, and after 3 Hours the Receiver had built in Bluetooth even with a fancy Antenna sticking up from the back! Total Cost: CA. 4 Hours with all the cutting and drilling and soldering, (I am slow, I am old lol A young healthy guy can do this in 2 Hours easily!) And Energy source + Bluetooth assembly: about 25€ on Amazon. 1 Euro for a Bluetooth logo-Sticker I added to the Front Switch!
Next thing I do will be an Arylic- Streamer Assembly built into my Philips AH686 Receiver (Big silver Case, 2x90Watts to 8Ohm, built about 1978) A really beautiful old machine with great sound!
Then this old gear will have built in Amazon Music, Spotify etc. + Bluetooth, W-Lan, and after that ll change the Potentiometer to a Remote Potentiometer Assembly. Cost: 50,- for the Streamer, 30,- Euro for the Remote Infrared Poti, 25,- For the energy source.
Cost In total € 105,- FUN Factor: Priceless!
May it be one day of work for me, but after this, my old gear will be ready for the next 45 Years, maybe recapping will be required in a few years. But I will see!
By the way, the Philips receiver was a steal, not a deal! I only paid €120,- incl. shipping! And the Receiver is in mint Quality...But if anyone pays €200,- for this model, it is still a good price!
That all said: It is fun, affordable, and for people with "that hole" in the heart (No Dirt Bike, or E-Piano like me ) to fill, it´s a nice sense of achievement! 😉😉

@@UnitedStatesofAnalog You`ll never know unless you try! And don´t underestimate yourself!
You must know: I don´t have feeling in my right hand due to a damage in the upper spine, and both my hands are trembeling due to my medication. When I solder stuff, I have to wear TWO sets of Glasses to see enough...Worst of all: I cannot sit longer than 30min on a chair. My lower Back hurts so much, I could die. I am on Fentanyl heavy dosis...
So, I I can do it, YOU can do it too. I am sure of that! You just need to think about if you want to do it, or better find someone that does it for you.
Also, I must admit, some mods or builds needed their time. For Example, when I built my JBL 4341s Clones, I was almost done with the Cabinets, and I decided the design of the surface would be a nice textured beige vegan leather.
So I started the process and cut the leather first - only to be hospilatised afterwards for 3 Weeks with Covid!
And when I came back, first I was happy to be able to continue the build, because for me, 3 Weeks in the hospital was killing boring! lol.
But: I was SOOOO weak after the illness, I cannot describe it! It took me 3 month to be able to do things as before - bring out the trash for example. This was a real heavy challenge to me!
Remember: Damaged Spine to a grade to having numb legs and being retired at 50yrs old, living in constant pain due to this. Being on Fentanyl 150microg/Hour and trembling due to this...
And fresh from the hospital after hefty covid /pneumonia, weak like a single photon in space...
But I was so determined to see my completed Speakers, I could not resist to finish them within a month after I came home. And they are heavy, man! really heavy! They weigh in 73kgs that's 161lbs... per piece lol... But, I still am very happy with my speakers!
Nothing compares to this kind of satisfaction. And, if I can do it... 😉😉
Next project i`ll try: Write shorter answers, and not be carried away everytime lol! Bytheway: I saw a T-shirt the other day, written on it with big letters:
      DANGER!
      I AM RETIRED!
      I KNOW EVERYTHING!
