in my opinion its still early days for Tesla. They hired a boatload of people to fill positions in a very short amount of time. When you do this you end up with some good employees and a whole lot of those that aren't the best fit. Unfortunately they didn't do productive turnover process of weeding out those who weren't right over time, instead they did mass layoffs so good employees become collateral damage. hopefully this year they can stabilize and be more efficient with their process and their people.

I so relate to this guy. I worked for solarcity since 2013 and was transferred to Tesla during the merger. I finally left when my salary was cut by 50% and wanted me to sit in a call center. I still love tesla and thats the sad part. There were so many people who worked there with pride and worked hard. My manager (1 of the 12 i had over my 6 years) would say to me, "I have no power over that. I just work here just like you." We were sitting in sales training in 2017 and Elon was doing a press conference saying how there will be no sales people in the future. The room was silent and the trainers were like don't worry thats not going to happen anytime soon. A year and a half later all sales people are gone. Tesla Literally doesnt have any care for the people who work there even though the people like myself and this gentleman in the video want so badly for Tesla to succeed.
I remember we had a tour and I went into all the call centers and sales departments when we had the training in 2017. When I went back in april 19 i was mortified by how many empty decks and like whole floors of people that were gone. It was very sad.

I worked at Data General in so portland me. We let the imployes do plant layouts and submit them to industrial engineering.
If they could not prove the plan wrong in 2 weeks we would change the plant layout.
This would make the decisions at the lowest level and empower the the people who were doing the work and know the most about the line.
In some cases the supervisor would participate with good or bad result.
But in general it was to provide better working conditions and a 10% space for work in place to be dropped jest in time.
Empowering the workers was a great way to improve moral, and it was a great success.

His experience is also skewed by his love of the company and its mission. I mean the guy likes Tesla so much that he came up with a conspiracy theory that 25% of the company are moles bought and paid for by competing companies. So people are either sabotaging Tesla, or people at Tesla are so incompetent/mismanaged that someone would think the poor quality of work had to be intentional.
Much of what he said is also corroborated by Wired's article on the same topic.

I don't think that people necessarily go work for Tesla to sabotage, but considering the working conditions they might be proverbially flipping the table after being berated by inept management one too many times. I go in for service calls, and/or I call their support people online. In most cases they don’t have a clue. Their culture seems to focus on minimal background or Pedegree as possible. And they pay their employees a little on the low side - considering their growth industry. That’s just my perception. At first after I bought my car, I got the impression that this was a really good company. But after interacting with all the layers of people on top of the actual product, the workers don’t seem to really be a part of the heart and soul or culture of the company. I had to resend it back to her with notes where she had messed up more than once. On delivery day the person who delivered my car was not qualified to train me on my car. And i have found some items with my car which I was unsatisfied with and reached out to Tesla with no response. All this being said I LOVE my car, and I LOVE Tesla and what it stands for. My take. First of all, ALL businesses in my 50 years in the workforce are exactly the same as this guys story. My last 20 years while working for the largest commuter railway in the US, supervision was a joke. They came from supermarkets, military, other styles of public transportation jobs, unrelated to railroad work, but they all never knew how to manage people. And I know that because I was in management for part of those years. I was relieved of those duties and returned into my previous position to finish my career. And happy to do it. If you can't manage people, you cant manage a business either. So this story told by an employee is true for every failed and sucessful endeavour ever in history. End of take. Oh, and you can take those words to the Bank 🏦..!!! Go Tesla. And I did apply for a position as mechanic and would have been hired, but wasnt really looking to be back in the workforce again anyway...!!!

Working on the railway in the UK there’s plenty of incompetence in management, and we also have lots of turnover, people changing job roles every 6 months. We have better employment rights, so they can’t just fire people without good reason, but this kind of stuff happens everywhere, even outwardly successful companies.
The last car I bought from new also had broken trim clips, misfitting panels and other things, admittedly it was a cheaper car, but over here they’re usually referred to as “Friday afternoon” cars. Stuff they rush to get done before they finish for the weekend.

Recently I had to go in to the service center for a minor issue. I was upset that the person that I talked to at roadside assistance said that she would notify the service center that I was coming, in.. the Tesla Ranger that was at my house 3 days before said that I needed to go to the service center and that he would notify them.. when I came in.. of course they had no record of it. Their in house communication for our service records is screwed up.. I recommend that if you own a tesla.. keep your own records. I had to get a 12v battery replaced.. only 4 months after the last one was replaced and they couldn't find that service visit for my car. Luckily, I had my invoice and they replaced it for free and apologized. Something is very wrong with their internal communications.. and don't try to call and talk to someone about.. there is nobody to call anymore.

Living in a city that HAD 2 major vehicle manufacturers (Mitsubishi/Chrysler and Holden (GMH), both now closed (along with Ford and Toyota in Victoria), it was common practice when sales slowed and slow sales periods were expected, large amounts of production line staff were 'let go' and output was reduced to cut costs (improve profits).
Unfortunately, you could pretty much much guaranty some of these cuts would come just before Christmas.
    Welcome to the Auto industry.
I feel Tesla is getting a disproportionate amount of press for just about everything they do, because it's Tesla. It's a growing business in a cut-throat industry. 'New' car companies rarely last more than a few years. Tesla is doing the (near) impossible, unfortunately, the workers will always be the most fluid cost variable.

Great interview Kim! I hope Elon sees this and I hope he gets how important it is to solve these problems. It’s good to do a walkabout every once in a while to get a feeling for how good things are working, or how bad they are broken. And ask for impressions from random people. Not only is it empowering to employees, but they’ll work harder if they feel that they have some input. It’s also a good way to identify good people. Good people that are put in positions of authority will either motivate the people around them, or drive out of the people that are holding things up.

A culture of "stop and fix" without metrics based on partial product (i.e. not how many doors you've assembled but how few errors are missed) and employee empowerment to make their role what they want it to be sounds like it would work wonders for Tesla. Also, sounds like they need to turn that efficiency team into a pickup team dedicated to learning unique problems, escalating issues, and gathering consensus when individual employees are swamped with work and can't divert their attention.

I can imagine this, but not all employees will have the same story, I get the same at my company, I've had a great career, I just learn to stay out of the politics. Some however had awful experiences because they got into the politics of it and didn't like what they saw. There are good times and bad times in all companies. Moral ebbs and flows.

I just wanted you to know that as of today August 3 @tesla announced they are again offering free unlimited supercharging on all new orders for Models X and S. They just keep on surprising! 😊 Might want to pass that on to your subscribers.

Well Telsa is desperate with Model S/X continuing to decline. Model S/X is their golden goose, and without Model S/X doing well, Telsa will bleed red long long time
