Love your videos. :) I'd say the recommendation on when to colonize is a bit over zealous. For some, that may be too long to wait, I'd say you can do it with half your fleet, half the level, and half the credits pretty easily. I usually pick up large civilian transports that are large enough to carry the 1000 passengers to their new home. Once the home is colonized, I then store those two transports within the colony itself to avoid their upkeep. From there, it is a matter of building up your colony slowly but occasionally having to go back to scare off the pirates. Usually their bases are quite small if you deal with them soon after you get the notification. Either way, the colonies were profitable (or broke even) even with unrest and pirate activity. You can fund the additional colony's with that profit and sometimes using the civilians a colony generates to ferry over others using the ships you stored earlier.
first time player. started a colony on a beautiful water world. left for less than a month and returned to upgrade it. immediately attacked by an armada of over 30 ships. i have no idea what to do. seems anti fun. reloaded 6 times now and same thing every time. barely into the game. i have a decent fleet of battleships, frigate point defense ships and a capital ship i found. but the enemy has an overwhelming force. does this happen every time? should i wait until i have overwhelming force to the entire sector to even start a colony?
@@alexandermoore4908 It doesn't happen everytime, that is just bad luck. Fortunately, you can build your fleet without your base and eventually wrestle it back. That's frustrating, but also what I love about this game.

Great video JD, from the ship load outs, to the colonization and fleet tactics, everything is very helpful for new players! The industry explanation for colonies was also very appreciated. Also, that cliff hanger was great, good luck with that! Question, do you think you could make a tutorial/video on raiding and bombardment in the future as well?
Certainly. It will depend on the Persean League's war declarations whether or not I talk about raiding in a hypothetical or demonstrative sense, however.
Thats because salvage fleets are neutral by default. But if you get in their sensor range and they think that they can kill you, they switch to "pirate mode" and try to engage you.
Maybe 'I want to help', 'helping hand' or something like that as name for that Gemini, as it's neither specialy good as carrier nor as freighter as far as i know (and that's probably why i bought every gemini i found and put them in my fleet, i don't know why, but i like those)?
Free Ports also increase the likelihood that you will face expeditions, from what I have seen. So like Alpha Cores, you shouldn't click that button until you are really ready. As in have multiple colonies with strong patrol fleets in the system.
you can buy off hegemony ...the inspection still comes, but they just leave. I go freeport from the start, its more money and faster pop gain. Plus drugs that i dont have to import.

This is a very interesting series, the advice on how to effectively load out ships really helps me. The first two levels of fleet logistics both give 15% accessibility. Do you use mods, and if so which one(s)? The reason i ask is, you can deploy 582 points worth of ships, that is quite a lot ;). Also, nice cliff hanger, good luck on that fight!
There is a battle size slider in settings, some mods (nexerelin for example) increases a top limit on it, i highly recommend going with battlesize between 200(if you have wrong graphic card) to 500(or 1000 if you just wanna randomly die to The Great Djihad(5 huge pather fleets stacked, i cant beat that, there is just too many)
I'm not currently using mods in this playthough (I'm trying to keep the experience as true to a new player's as possible) I do plan to have a thoroughly modded playthrough after this one ends however.
The cap you can initially send out is affected by the relative size of your fleet as opposed to the enemy fleet(s) you're facing. If they're much bigger, they'll take a larger chunk of the maximum point pool, rather than an equal half, since they're supposed to be outnumbering you. One trick is that as long as you're blowing up enemy ships, that same principle will start to weigh back into your favor. Keep track of your deployment points up in the very top right of your tactics screen, and you should notice them going up in small increments with each enemy ship destroyed. So even if you can't deploy all of your combat ships at first, you might be able to call in the rest of your combat ships as reinforcements as the battle progresses. Or yes, you can just edit the fleet battlesize, but that can cause some serious lag if your computer can't handle it.
If you put weapons in the Colony Resources, will the colony be able to use them in someway or do you have to rely on the Ground Defenses and Patrol Fleet?
Fun story: I built my fleet with 2x Onslaught, 3x Legion and 3x Dominators. I was invaded in my system by 5x pirate fleets, each with 6-7 capitals (Mostly Atlas mk. ll). The core of my fleet, the Onslaughts and Legions, ground 3 of those fleets at once, without a single combat loss :D It was about 20 capital kills, and piles of smaller trash ships, was glorious.
Dude...I start a new game, and on a nearby nebula, I found 3 XIV Battlegroup Legion-class Battlecarrier...then I got lucky and got an Astral and Doom from a bounty hunt...
Still never got a Paragon. Even when I'm fighting a fleet with 4 of them, none of them can be recovered. But when it's a fleet of Legion, Onslaught or Conquest. I got all of them....
I was curious as to how the escorts are determined. I noted your frigates was not assigned to light escort at 30:15 Also what does taking control points do?
Taking control points allows you to add buffs during battles similar to the stable (LaGrange) points in a system: eg increased manoeuvrability (Nav); increased sensor power (Sensor) or increased tactics (Comms).. something like that anyway ;)

I've never taken a stipend, since i didn't want to "join" a faction or rather piss others off (trying to be a nice guy until i am powerful enough to enslave all of them ^^). I don't mean simultanously, but say i take Heagemony now and want to "join" Tri-Tech later, can i ?
You can change that and many more (stuff like max lvl [i did 69 coz you know] your max fleet size, earnings from exports for a colony and of course max industries. 4 for a whole planet where millions of people live is a bit silly so i upped it up to 6 at lvl 10 planet size) in settings (don't remember where exactly so search for it online or tell you would like me to check where it is but it will be tomorrow with my coffee).
Ive had brutal times with pirate raids the last few days. I have 3 worlds in a system mid ways out and its regularly assaulted by 4-5 pirate armadas with about 30 ships, 6-7 of which are capital ships. Even my fortresses get destroyed when 3 armadas hit it. I keep destroying the pirate bases i find. But theres probably 1 i just cant find.
You can deploy a fleet worth 582 command points? HOW? My Fleet max is 141 in normal Battles and a little bit more in Siege fights. Thats about 1 Paragon (60) 1 Onslaught (40) and one of the big carriers (40) Of is that a Mod that brings you up to 582? I have nearly the same Abilitys skilled so it cant be a skill.
Am I missing something or am I just a bit bad at the game? I bought this game a week ago and I gotta say that it's great, but I've run into a problem which makes me constantly die and lose all of my stuff. I can't seem to make credits at a reliable rate, and I usually survive month to month. Are you doing anything crazy to get credits or are you just doing bounties and such? I feel like I'm missing out on something here.
Mr. Bones the subreddit has some great tips for starting out, as well as the forums having a nice little beginner guide posting, and of course all of JD’s videos haha. What most of the guides sum up to though is: bounties here and there and survey/derelict missions as the bulk of your bitcoin. Honestly, I’ve found RNG plays a big part in determining whether you can rely on survey/derelict missions since you’ll need either a lot of drams or a phaeton to even make it out to most. What I’ve noticed, and I’m sure this is probably all logged in the forums/subreddit, but a lot of systems tend to maintain a certain market “placement” (i.e. one system produces a lot of lobsters, while another doesn’t) through each play through, so for me, Chalcedon and Epiphany (both Luddic Path worlds) are always short on pretty much everything. I like to smuggle drugs/armaments from Magec to Al Gebbar and then run over to Kumari Kandam and finish off there. Rinse and repeat. Sorry this is so long, but hopefully gives you an idea of where to go!
Starsector is hard. You're not missing something, you're just new. We all got our asses handed to use when we started. Just keep at it and you'll be trotting around with Paragons in no time :D If you really can't figure out what you're doing wrong, the playlist this video belongs to is all about getting started as a new player. I've also got a few guides on various game mechanics, and as Muffinbottomz mentioned, the subreddit has some great information for new players to. If there is anything specific you have a question about, just ask. There are quite a few seasoned players around here that will be glad to fill you in on whatever you need to know.
14th battlegroup ships are significantly superior to their standard counterparts. They are more heavily armored, have higher base flux capacity and flux venting, and they have a whopping +200 range on all weapons they mount. The trade off is a slight decrease in top speed, acceleration, and maneuverability. In the end, totally worth it.
@@szymonbrozek556 It's maybe because i'm using Nexelerin ; but as far as i know ; this mod don't change anything in star system build.... Must be my bad luck as usuall XD
you should survey ALL planets, while some are obviously not colonisationable , all of them have a chance of having the most valuable thing in the game, ai cores, and blueprints Blueprints in vanilla are very hard to get, and if you want to manufacture the best weapons and ships, you need to find as many as possible, surveying planets and finding ruins is the best way of doing it. If you find it expensive, get yourself some dedicated survey ships, that cuts down the cost significantly, and the tri-tachyon survey cruisers are all around good ships besides, as well as being incredibly fuel and supply efficient
Blueprints only ever appear as loot from ruins. I can tell which planets have ruins just by looking at them (the little haze of satellites and debris is visible on the world map), so no need to survey every planet.

So a few questions came to mind: Does the stipend expire or can you simply cancel it when you are "back" ? And in the same vein, does it prohibit taken a stipend for another faction ? I don't mean simultanously, but say i take Heagemony now and want to "join" Tri-Tech later, can i ?
Wow great work JDCollie! Is it possible to name one of the cruisers "Esmeralda"?
Added!
@@jdcollie258 Thank you!
Standoff combat Eagle? Call it the Mudhen
so, what about a planets sizes? Is 4 industry is max possible, or there more?
4 is always max, no matter the (physical) size of the planet.
You can change that and many more (stuff like max lvl [i did 69 coz you know] your max fleet size, earnings from exports for a colony and of course max industries. 4 for a whole planet where millions of people live is a bit silly so i upped it up to 6 at lvl 10 planet size) in settings (don't remember where exactly so search for it online or tell you would like me to check where it is but it will be tomorrow with my coffee).
thnx for info. it'll help greatly
Talk to the people in the bar on your planets, eventually someone will tell you where they are.
You can deploy a fleet worth 582 command points? HOW? My Fleet max is 141 in normal Battles and a little bit more in Siege fights.
Thats about 1 Paragon (60) 1 Onslaught (40) and one of the big carriers (40)
Of is that a Mod that brings you up to 582?
I have nearly the same Abilitys skilled so it cant be a skill.
You can increase the battle size in the settings
@@joemelton2044 thx. he talked about it in the next video^^ but i forgot to delte the question.
Just keep at it and you'll be trotting around with Paragons in no time :D
If you really can't figure out what you're doing wrong, the playlist this video belongs to is all about getting started as a new player. I've also got a few guides on various game mechanics, and as Muffinbottomz mentioned, the subreddit has some great information for new players to.
If there is anything specific you have a question about, just ask. There are quite a few seasoned players around here that will be glad to fill you in on whatever you need to know.
Would be cool to name 2 support ships Hansel and Gretel lol
Are you using anny mods or is this vanilla?
Love the series btw.
Vexium vanilla
14th battlegroup ships are significantly superior to their standard counterparts. They are more heavily armored, have higher base flux capacity and flux venting, and they have a whopping +200 range on all weapons they mount. The trade off is a slight decrease in top speed, acceleration, and maneuverability. In the end, totally worth it.
I nerver ever found a systeme like you found 1 in that let's plays. And never found a planet with all resources too... Must really have bad RNG.
Iv found similiar today but i would have to mine volatiles on a 250 gas giant and im butthurt about his system, it just too goddamn perfect
@@szymonbrozek556 mining is cheap
its exactly the kind of industry you want to put on high hazard planets
@@spicreb yeah but IT still uses up your planet limit, good thing this is nexerelin so it dont suck as much

you should survey ALL planets, while some are obviously not colonisationable , all of them have a chance of having the most valuable thing in the game, ai cores, and blueprints
Blueprints in vanilla are very hard to get, and if you want to manufacture the best weapons and ships, you need to find as many as possible, surveying planets and finding ruins is the best way of doing it.
