When you were naming all the different variations of Sega Genesis you forgot about the one that was an add-on for the laserdisc player called the LaserActive, no joke you pop in the module like a cartridge on the player and then you insert a Genesis cartridge like normal, SMH 🤣🤣

First time on the Chanel. I live in Brazil and worked for Tectoy at that time. The master system sold a lot and this is because Nintendo was absurdly expensive at the time. The models were Basically the same with differences only in the games that came with the console. The joystick has been changed to give it a more modern look and appeal to audiences who are familiar with the Sega Genesis. Great video and solid research on the subject. Keep up the great work. Honestly, Brazil with SEGA sounds a lot like Russia with Nintendo, except Russia bought Micro Genius Famiclones from Taiwan and rebranded them and sold pirate games as the official thing.

@@BottomOfTheDumpsterFire Brazil also had it's fair share of famiclones. In my neighborhood no one had the Master System everyone had a famiclone of some sort, mine was a Micro Genius.
@@MAGAIVER Ha, a Micro Genius was the exact Famiclone used as a base to create Russia's console gaming industry. They're not ideal, but they're not bad.
Yep Master System history and usage in Brazil is crazy. I've been covering the exclusive Brazlian games and currently looking at the rebranded Sega games. Awesome stuff. 👍

My father was born in the USA but spent some of his younger years in Brazil with his younger siblings because my grandfather was in the shipping business and was sent there by his employer Moore-McCormack. It just weird for me to hear when he speaks to his sister or someone he runs into in fluent Portuguese - like - "Who the hell are you?". Funny story: my aunt in New Jersey was in line for concert tickets when the guy behind her jokingly turned to his wife and said in Portuguese "Look at the legs on her" referring to my aunt. Aunt turns around in says "You should be careful who you talk to" in perfect Portuguese with zero accent. ". I'll keep the story of my father translating for Dominican prostitutes when he was in the army to myself, there may be parts of it he's never told me about.

My neighbor had the Master System Super Compact and as far as I can remember it works well.

Portugal and Brazil had the Master System III. Ecofilmes in Portugal had it's own Master System III with the help from Tectoy.

I've only played the SMS a handful of times at a store at the mall (I want to say it was Dillards) back in the late 80's. My cousin and I would play Rambo, which was just another Ikari Warriors/Commando-like game. I ended up getting a Genesis a couple years later.

Oh yeah my first tv console back at 1996. Master system 3 with Sonic 1 integrated! I was 9! I had bought many titles for this but the only one i still remember was Jurassic park. Probably because sonic and jurassic park was the only ones that i finished.
What still trips me out til this day is how scarce and rare the Master System was here in the US in the late 80's and 90's yet I had no idea it was poppin out there in Europe and Brazil until later on. I mean even with me discovering MSDOS emulation in the mid-to-late 90's like Massage and BrSMS, aside from the handful of European releases like The Flash, Mortal Kombat 1, Predator, and a few others, there were a still a LOT of ROMs of games that hadn't even been dumped yet let alone easily accessible to find online. If it wasn't for the internet, emulation, and now social media I think the Master System would have been much more forgotten but we get to keep it alive today to explain to figure generations of gamers :)
The same logic applies to Europe with the NES. I was mind blown to learn how popular the niche platform was stateside and Japan.
The Sega mark 3 / master system story is an interesting one!!! I truly think that if it wasn't for the sucess in both Brazilian AND European markets, Sega may have not been successful enough to make the Genesis/Mega drive!!! Tech Toy had domestic manufacturing liscences from Sega and had domination in South America and Brazil. I believe Tech Toy still has the licence to produce Sega hardware! !! I would love to get my hands on some of those later master system consoles at a reasonable price. Thanks for bringing this up.
The Master System was the most advanced 8 bit system of the times (if we exclude the PC Engine which was a hybrid 8/16 bit system though) except for one thing: the Commodore 64 had by far the most advanced sound chip of the whole 8 bit generation.
Technically, the NES had nothing special going on, it was nor the more powerful console, nor it had the best sound/visuals: what it had though, was Nintendo-level quality games and the complete dominance (monopoly, even) of the American market.
The MasterSystem is amazing, no doubt.
Telling from experience with clone devices however, they should add more official MasterSystem/GameGear games in favor for their own... or just bring back the cartridge slot.

This is only tangential to the video, but I have to say that I absolutely LOVE the look of the SG-1000 Mk2 and Mk3. They're among my all-time favorite console case designs, especially the Mk2. Aside from the bright blue Sega logo, they're surprisingly timeless. They really don't look like most 80s hardware.
One day, I mean to pick a Mk 2 up just to have on a shelf. One day...
I got my first console at 3 years old, the Master System Super Compact.
As far as I remember, those consoles here in Brazil wouldn't provide any cartridge slot already by the late 90s. That lid was a fake one.
And I can confim the RF of the super compact was thrash.
Btw: about one or two years ago, the Mega Drive was re released here by Tec Toy (and Sega), on Its model 1 shape, including about 20 Sega games in memory, AV output and a SD Slot. The thing was received poorly because of the lack of a HDMI and still was sold at a high price (at least It wasnt a mini console). Cool thing that it was NOT a emulation box, but its a bummer that the components weren't of good quality (not sure If you can replicate easlily an original hardware using the same components at a large scale of production).
R: Is there any way you could provide more information on the console? We're trying to look into TecToy Master System and Mega Drive stuff as we want to preserve it all at some point. We know the second revision of the Mega Drive 4 had its flash memory and boot ROM dumped, but that's it. ~Red
The Master System hardware was much more reliable that the NES, but here in America Nintendo had us by the cojones. The master system is one of the only major North American gaming console from that generation I don't own. It goes for a bit more on Ebay than I'm willing to pay, especially since my Mega Drive / Genesis with it's everdrive can play Master System games on what is basically original hardware. Sega does what Nintendon't!
I was in an opposite situation. I'm American and I only had a Sega Master System growing up as a kid and I didn't get an NES till I was an adult. I greatly enjoyed the Sega Master System as a kid in America. Even though I remember growing up a bit confused when people who owned a NES use to talk about blowing into their cartridges. I didn't fully understand till I got older since the Master System was so reliable, you never had to do that with Sega games.
Also, the push-down mechanism for inserting carts into the original NES had a tendency to break, since it had so many moving parts. The sad thing was, it was completely superfluous. The ONLY reason it's there was to make the NES feel more like a VCR, rather than a console, since they were trying to look as little like an Atari as possible.
(This is one of several reasons that the NES2 is considered the much better system to own today, if you want og hardware.)
@@johnpenguinthe3rd13 My 1978 vintage Atari 2600 'heavy sixer' has no issues either. Cartridge systems in theory should last a long time because they have no moving parts. Nintendo made a gamble by releasing a console in North America not long after the 1984 video game crash. They deserved to make lots of money. On the other hand, they became a near monopoly with their anti competitive terms that they forced onto publishers. They deserved to be stomped by the Genesis for a few years. It's too bad they didn't get stomped by the Atari 7800 and Jaguar too. I'd love to play Castlevania on my Atari 7800. The Atari 7800 was similar to the NES in terms of power, and even better in certain ways. Too bad it didn't really have games to back it up.

Fantastic research. It is confusing even for brazilians. Just one small corretcion: the Master System II in Brazil did not come with a Light Gun and 3D glasses. You can read in the Box: "opcional não incluído" that means "Optional not included". The Only differences between MS1 and MS2 in Brazil are the pack in games and the name of course. MS1 comes with Hang-On, Safari Hunt and a secret labyrinth game. MS2 comes with Alex Kidd. You know, Mega Drive history in Brazil is almost as confusing....you can try your hand in that too.
That is absolutely bonkers.
I'd just be happy to have the original Master System once more...

I had the first generation of Master System III Compact, Alex Kid on the memory.
It later got a revision with Sonic on memory.
I loved the MS III, my 2nd console i ever own.
Funny note is that i think 2 years ago Tec Toy re released a Genesis/Mega Drive with the original gen 1 case that accept cart... but is a SoC Genesis. some ppl love it
If you’re going into the Brazil market, you should note Brazil made variants of the master system well into the 2000s

The Sega Master System was the first console I owned. My parents wouldn't buy me video games, so I had to get a job delivering newspapers in order to save up for an SMS and a tiny black and white television. I played the hell out of it!
Which built in game did yours have? The first one I played as a kid had Safari Hunt built in. Sadly, it's the only game I remember playing on it but the guy who owned it had about 8 more cartridges, at the time. Just can't remember which games they were.

Nice video, but I believe you missed the Tsukuda Original Othello Multivision FG-1000 and FG-2000, unless I missed them, which were licensed versions of the SG-1000. I believe they were released in Japan only. There were games released for them. Games released for the FG-1000 were released in silver boxes. They were eventually reissued in black boxes when the FG-2000 was released. "Othello" was the built-in game. The games released for the FG-1000 and FG-2000 are all cartridge based, and are compatible with the SG-1000, Mark III, and the Japanese SMS. The Mulitivision games released are:

The two models of the Multivision are rare and expensive, but I did manage to buy a Japanese SMS several years ago. They too are rather pricey, but somewhat easier to find. Both my North American (Model 1) and Japanese SMS consoles still work perfectly. Certainly better made than the NES Model 1, and the Japanese SMS is fully backwards compatible, playing all cartridge and card based games released in Japan for the SG-1000, FG-1000, FG-2000, SC-3000, Mark III, and of course the SMS. Built-in 3-D, Yamaha FM Sound, and Rapid Fire hardware.

We also got a TON of famiclones, the poshiest one even used the Atari 5200's case. None were licensed, but they were sold normally on stores and advertised all over tv and comics. Before 1985 we had a worse problem than import taxes; it was ilegal to import electronics, the military dictatorship tried to foster the local industry by completely closing the market. Of course that just mean we got way behind on several counts and took a while to catch up.
People did have other systems, anyways; all those weird post 8-bit gen Master Systems were more geared towards younger kids with clueless relatives and the less privileged population. Gamers went after Playstations and Xbox 360s just like in the USA. I personally never even had a Sega System before my (brazilian made) Dreamcast.
i would love it if Sega released a SMS mini if the Genesis mini does well, can you imageine there are so many different versions of the SMS that each one could have 30-40 games each and they would look great sitting next to each other on a shelf, each having different games on them.
Question can you play mark 3 games in the power base converter or do I have to buy the whole system.

The Japanese master system has the 3D glasses interface and FM sound module built into the system, which is how it differs from the mark III and thus called the SEGA Master System.
You probably know this Top hat gaming man but Techtoy also makes and sells a Megadrive in Brazil, I believe. Not sure if it's any good though. Good vid!
TecToy sold all Sega consoles and accessories up until Dreamcast, but they are pretty much the same thing as overseas consoles, only the Mega Drive was a little more exclusive, like the Master System...

The MK III is more sought after than the Master System, thus making the cost of the system exponentially higher.
The Japanese Master System is more than a MArk III/European Master System.
It has built in:
-FM Sound module
-3D glassses adapter
-Rapid fire unit
It is the ultimate Master System hardware, nothing comes close.

I’m from Brazil and had a Master System back in the days. Had a NES too, but the Sega games were better in my opinion, the colors were better, gameplay was better. Both were great. TecToy was an infusion of freshness to our toy market, electronic toys were very few and expensive, this Brazilian toy company brought many technologically advanced toys at a reasonable (still expensive) price. Too bad TecToy went through some tough times and is still not recovered and far from the days of glory. Whenever I can, I buy some of they products to support them (they expanded their products offer, many different things with their brand now).

I've got an original with Alex Kid that looks like normal. Seems to be one of the last before the II. I'm in the UK. Could this be from elsewhere in Europe?
I had a Master System Super compact... its built-in D-pad broke twice in the span of a year...
I still have mine, and its D-pad is being held together by metal pieces attached with the help of a soldering iron. The on/off switch is completely worn out, making if very hard to use. I also lost the antenna, so I can only really pay via RF. It was my first Master System, but I wouldn't use it for actual gameplay now that I have better alternatives.

Sega has its Master System clones be properly licensed. While all the "Famiclones" on Ali-Express are just all, "it is free real estate"

There is technically the unlicensed Mega Drive known as the Fei Hao MD, but nothing on the Master System scene as far as I can tell. It makes sense, though, considering the Famicom's popularity in most of the world. Would you clone a console with a small library or a console with a large library and next to no copy protection?
I don't think TecToy's consoles qualify as "clones", since they have actual Sega chips inside (at least the older ones). Famiclones on the other hand were built from reverse engineering the real deal.
At the time I had a master system with glasses and a pistol but it was purchased separately. In the 4:09 it says that the two came together but in the box is saying the opposite.
I don't remember if there were any versions that came with these items.
My master system came complete with gun & 3d glasses (Bought in UK). I gave to my nephew (my sister ended up selling it) wish I kept it. I always thought it was a factory package.
I remember Master System III being widely available all the way through the 90s in Brazil. But I didn't know half of these consoles existed. Tec Toy has had a troubled existence with countless experiments, partnerships and products which underperformed. It is a small tech company which has trouble competing with foreign tech giants well settled in the country. One of the reasons it survived so far was this partnership with Sega, which they milked to the bone by selling refurbished Master Systems and Genesis. Nowadays they take advantage of the nostalgic factor by selling retro consoles, including an Atari 2600 in addition to the Sega classics, with dozens of games included and in some cases an SD card slot which allows you to play your own roms. But I heard these new Tec Toy models are emulators and not the original hardware, and performance isn't perfect. And they're not as cheap as you'd expect.

Well, IIRC, the Master System was only officially released in Brazil around '89, when the Mega Drive was already out in Japan, so I guess it's safe to say that the first Master System 3 came out a good while after the Genesis...
