      I honestly did not like the gameplay of Knuckles Chaotix, but I'll fire it up every so often(via emulation as I sold my 32X in the 90's to build a PC in high school), and listen to the awesome music.

      I like the idea. I'm more hopeful that someone makes a decent Homebrew game that really utilizes the system. Compare frogger on PS1 to Chrono Cross. Though these games were made on the same system, one was inferior (I did like frogger though)... 32x was basically all frogger games, just basic (still fun) but didn't utilize the hardware in the same way Chrono cross did for PS1.

    I had a large number of friends in Japan during late 80s and 90s. Surprisingly enough Sega though completely in Japan at that for decades was still seen as a foreign company.

      Well it was started as Standard Games by a 3 American businessmen Martin Bromley, Irving Bromberg, and James Humpert in Hawaii in 1940, and only moved to Japan after WWII to serve American military bases, and then changed to Service Games, so can't blame the Japanese for seeing it as a foreign company for so long because that's what it was.

    Nice video. I have a soft spot for this console as I have fond memories of playing it with my brother Christmas 1994 while he was home from college. I’d like to port an open source flight simulator to it and use the Genesis to draw the cockpit and the 32X to render the outside visuals. The two could work together to produce a nice game with good frame rates and fully textured polygons as I only need to render half the screen in 3D.

    I guess I'm a moron, because I have always thought Mortal Kombat was better than Street Fighter II. I actually considered buying a 32X when the stores were just trying to get rid of them at super low prices. Even with it's small library, I just really loved Space Harrier and Afterburner.

      Bill Gates If it's your opinion then it's not undisputed!! Marvel vs Capcom are great fun but 1 and 2 are FAR from the greatest of all time. Hell, even 3 is better. There is no such thing as the "undisputed" because everyone has their own opinions.
      As for Mortal Kombat, I thought part 2 was pretty good but the rest were vastly over rated crap that couldn't hold a candle to Street Fighter. But blood and guts got them far. Now MK 9 was a great game.

      It was obvious even at the time - to anyone not easily impressed by gore and digitized sprites - that the Mortal Kombat were superficial, simplistic and didn't play that well compared to Street Fighter and other more ambitious fighters. Go back and play them and I'm sure you'll see how tacky they were.

    I owned the 32X back in the day when it went on clearance at my local K-Mart, and had about 15 games I had gotten for it all under $20 USD each, but sadly like an idiot in the late 90's along with my Genesis I listed it in a local trade paper, and sold it off to fund a new PC build. Ahh the stupid things we do as kids in high school. So I will say yes if you can find it at a good price with all the hookups then it's worth owning, and playing as it helps filter the output of the Genesis Model II units to look a bit cleaner, otherwise just emulate it on PC if you can find the BIOS files needed to make it work.
    Edit: On Knuckle Chaotic I personally did not care for the gameplay, but the music is some of my favorite Sonic music of all time, so I still fire up the game via emulation from time to time just to listen to the music when I'm in a bad mood.

    About MK vs SF - MK have much easier and comfortable controls, better story, more real life look to it, enough secrets, enough over the top attractions and ok fighting mechanics.
    SF - all these Z shaped inputs to do any special move is a pain in the arse, i remember buying SF4 for Xbox360 and i was fighting against my controller more than i fought an opponent on screen. And i don't plan to go to internet for hours just to find out what controller u need to use to play SF comfortably, how much it cost over the game itself and how long before it can arrive at my home. MK - you just pick up and play, SF - you need to fight your own character on screen because Camcom (and many others) thinks - it's ok to make Z, circles, half circles and all other strange movements on a standard controller, or ok to buy a special controller just to play their game (since releasing locked on content as DLCs, and then Ultimate, Ultra and Special versions of the same game for money, instead of free patches, is ok with them too).

    I only first heard of the 32X at Toys R Us when it was already deeply discounted to $19.99. I remember only really seeing Doom and Star Wars Arcade for sale for it, which I didn't feel I needed a new system to play. Also I guess part of me saw it so deeply discounted and thought it must not be that good, which is only mostly true. There are still some games I'd like to check out though. The X-Men prototype with Bishop was pretty cool too.

    I feel like I made a smart choice with the 32x. I rented it for a week for Blockbuster along with Knuckles Chaotix. I was 8 years old when it was released and didn't think it was worth the months of begging my parents for, nor worth wasting on as a potential Christmas gift. Doing some housework for a while in exchange for a week's rental however was completely worth it. I was a big fan of Sonic games and couldn't pass up playing. Great game, would love to play it again soon to see how it holds up to memory.

    I don't really buy into the echo chamber that believes the 32X was a commercial failer.
    That 665,000 figure is units sold in the first 6 weeks. A major success if you ask me. Total units sold were never disclosed but it well exceeded 1 million. Although the exact date of discontinuation is unclear, it was undoubtedly after October of 1995 and before March of 1996. People blame weak sales, but there is way more to this story, and it really has little to do with the sales performance of the 32X itself. Anyways, as a 32X fan, I enjoyed your take.

    • @stevesmith1496
      @stevesmith1496 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jenovi Systems always sell well off the start though due the hardcore people that need to buy all the new stuff right away. It's not an echochamber thing, I bought a lot of magazines and such back in the day, trust me, the 32X was definitely a huge failure sadly.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Steve I'll eventually do a video on the 32X covering this more in depth. The short version is Sega botched the Saturn's release only shipping around 60,000 units in the same period that the 32X sold almost 3/4 million units. The PSX was also just around the corner and had over 100k preorders. They were in trouble, so to save the system and Sega, they pulled the plug on almost everything else and moved all home console resources to the Saturn. Not to say this was the correct decision. It's much more complicated than this, but this is the short version. Personally, and I am somewhat biased because I love the 32X, I feel discontinuing it was a massive misstep. The Saturn was too expensive for their average customer, and Sega just cut off games to all their other consoles leaving zero options outside of another cheaper systems. Nintendo continued to support the SNES with quality titles for two years after the N64 launched. Sega? Maybe a few good games during the first two-quarters of 96 (about 6 months worth), then just shovelware. They still sold systems, but they stopped support for the Genesis in 95 and only released what was near completion or ready to ship. "Officially" that's not the case but look over the games released in 96, 97, and 98 when Majesco took over. It's clear what happened when every game released is a recycled sports game.

    • @Chelaxim
      @Chelaxim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jenovi There's only 40 games released on the 32X that's less than the 3DO, Wonderswan,Neo Geo Pocket color and CD-I.

    • @stevesmith1496
      @stevesmith1496 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jenovi Trust me, I know, I lived through the "surprise launch" and everything else. But still, the 32X was not in great shape. Everyone knew it was nothing but an attempt at keeping fans loyal to Sega until the Saturn came along. Plus not long after it came out they repackaged it with a bunch of coupons to save money on what few games were out. Then it had a price drop not long after that. I like the thing and I'm not crapping on it, but the "system" just wasn't a long term success. And even if Sega hadn't killed it, 3rd party support would have because they were obviously getting sick of dealing with cartridge based systems as the N64 proved later. The N64 sold insanely well when it first came out and Nintendo still couldn't get much in the way of 3rd party support. And theres no way Sega could support the 32X by itself if they going to have any chance against Sony. And I know they didn't in the long run, but we didn't know that at the time.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      40 games, most worth owning is a great number for a system that was supported for less than a year. I'm not well versed on the NGP, but the 3DO, Wonderswan, and CD-I all had fairly healthy multi-year lifespans and contain a number of good games in their own right.

    Even though this is kind of an old video, I have to wonder if at one point, Sega was planning on an adapter for the Saturn's cartridge port, to allow it to play Genesis/Megadrive games, and perhaps even 32X. If they were, it's likely to have gotten the axe while they were trying to milk the last few pennies out of the consoles and games still on the shelves, and never saw the light of day. I'm fairly sure from the architecture of the Saturn, that it could easily have handled 32X titles, and via emulation, any Megadrive titles you threw at it. Bad mistake, Sega. Probably would have been a two level operation, the CD would have the emulation software/instruction set, and a cartridge with a bit of tech to tell the Saturn which software it'd be running.
    It'd be interesting since only recently they managed to crack the Saturn, to see if anyone found anything in the original BIOS code that actually allows this.

    Finally someone giving a fair review about the 32x. Yes it has flaws as well as good hidden gems but like mister top hat said... as long as you are open minded and enjoy it for what it is instead of following what youre told like a good sheep then you can truly step back and just have fun like it was alway meant for instead of spawning stupid hatefull comments. No i am not a fanboy. Just someone that likes and respect gaming and platforms that tried to be good.
    All of this to simply say that yes.. like all of my retro systems i like my 32x.
    Now ill wait for angry people to Reee under this opinion because i didnt follow the general opinion.

      gbrille I've spent a lot of time with the 32X and owned almost every game at one point. All I can say is that it felt very underwhelming. A very high proportion of good games, but absolutely nothing that I would consider great.

      cj694x2: Yeah... it hardly deserves the hate it's gotten, but compared to the SNES' SuperFX it doesn't have must-have titles like Star Fox or Yoshi's Story to show it off... Knuckles Chaotix was nice and all, but it wasn't up to the bar set up Sonic 1-3+K. Maybe if Virtua Fighter had come out earlier...

    I actually really like my 32x while I agree that the games library is miniscule, what is there is mostly quality. While some ports are gimped, and/or have better versions on other consoles at the time, Doom comes to mind, there were some stellar arcade ports. Such as After Burner, Virtua Racing Deluxe, and Space Harrier. As well as a couple of good original games, such as Kolibiri, and Knuckles Chaotix. And some very technically impressive software like Darxide, and Metalhead.
    Still though, as much as I love my 32x, I would feel absolutely gutted if I had bought this on launch, or when it was relevant. While the library has an overall better quality library than the 32x, it sold less than 1/3 of what the Sega/Mega CD.

    I've always enjoyed the 32x. I got one in '95 (used unit from a local video store). I was quite disappointed when support got dropped by Sega but was not surprised. I remember at the time, Space Harrier and After Burner got some negative press, with a lot of reviews saying "why is Sega releasing 10 year old arcade ports on this system". I thought they were great as it was the first time I played near arcade ports of either one on a home console. I am glad that over time these two ports got more appreciation. Another good arcade port on the system is NBA Jam tournament edition. It was the first port I played at home that featured the arcade scaling that was missing from the 16 bit versions. Virtua Racing is probably my favorite game on the console. It is the best version of the game on any console IMO (the Saturn version was a missed opportunity). Doom 32x, despite only being the first two episodes of the game, was fun and I still enjoy it though at the time, I had Doom on the PC so anything on a console was going to be inferior. Being a fan of FMV, I did enjoy the upgraded 32x ports of those games. It would have been interesting if there was a 32xCD game that was released that was not FMV but I guess no one felt the investment would have been worth it.
    I do not get the hate the system has received, I think a lot of it is people jumping on the bandwagon. Sure the system had a lot of issues, but from someone who had one for over 20 years, I don't regret having it.

    One thing to note, is that all cartridge based games were ridiculously expensive. The original Genesis/MD titles for example cost around $59-$69 per cart. You can't really blame the 32X for that.

      It's not just some folks online; Sega themselves warned consumers not to use the 32X with the CDX due to the overheating issues. If you're okay with playing Russian roulette with your gaming consoles, fine, but don't go around advising other people to do the same.

    I'm definitely one of those kids who bought into the idea Sega put into my head by saying this add on to my Genesis/CD system would give me a Saturn like experience... I still remember getting it home, and putting it together with such glee.. I had bought the Model 2 Sega and Model 2 CD drive the year before, specifically because I wanted it to "flow" design wise with the 32X.. I thought the fact that they said they were releasing Virtua Fighter, and Virtua Racing for it meant that it had ruffly the same power as the Saturn..never occured to me that Sega would ever release two AM2 (Sega) titles in an inferior fashion... while I did enjoy the system.. I only bought Star Wars, and rented Virtua racing... Star Wars was SOOOOOO repetitive, I was bored within a day... I was pleased with the 32X-CD games I rented.. as they looked a million times better than the regular SEGA-CD versions.. but they only released like 5-7 of them... mostly or all made by same company that seemingly made nothing but FMV games... but with all this said.. I still own my setup, and wouldn't sell it, it sits right next to my Saturn, though once in a while I remove the 32X portion, because the Sega/CD setup on its own looks so damn nice, and still gives me a rush of 1990s nostalgia by just looking at it ...
    BTW "top hat" .. take it easy on the MK bashing... I'm a HUGE fighter fan, I have owned arcade machines for decades, NEO-GEO machines with every fighter game on hand, Capcom cabinets from SF-2 CE to Alpha 3 and even SF 3rd strike... so I know fighters.. and Mortal Kombat just has a sweet spot for guys who were in grade school in the 1990s... I agree that a lot of people who liked the game were dummies.. but it was the first game that tried using digital video/pictures for character models... that coupled with the non SF pace/timing, the fun of trying to remember fatalities and perform them, and yes the goofy blood, helped keep the fighting game arcade scene strong.. it was at its strongest during this time.. and THAT my friend, was important, and holds some of my most cherishes gaming memories.

    I bought a 32X at one point. (Back when it was a collectors item, not a new item. Around 2004 I think.)
    I wound up returning it though. It was neat and interesting, but I wasn't able to find much on it that I wanted to play. It wasn't so much about the library of games the console had, but it was more because there was only one used game store in my area that even had any 32X games, and their selection sucked.
    As I recall, when I returned it I instead bought a Sega CD. I still have that.

    I definitely don't think the 32X was worth the money when it came out, but I managed to pick up the complete Genesis Trio and a bunch of games for $100 about 10 years ago (back when retro gaming was still pretty niche). The thing that really screwed the 32X is, okay, you want your next gen, first you get your Megadrive. About $100 back in the day at that point. Then you spend about $150 for the 32X, then say you want your Sega CD, and you're now around $300. Or you buy none of those, and spend that extra $100 for the Saturn, in one nice sleek package (for the time, it's only marginally smaller than my OG XBOX). And instead of having to podge the whole monstrosity together, because the more stress and strain on each of the interfaces, you are going to have failures in connectivity (as seen with the Jaguar CD). Even if you were putting this together nickel and dime style, by the time you saved up enough in your allowance money, by the time you had enough, the parts were discontinued and you had to settle for a Saturn or the much cheaper PS1.
    I learned that the hard way trying to shovel enough snow for a Vectrex, but by then they sold out at the $99 mark and had to settle for a copy of Pitfall for my 2600.

    The only thing I disliked about Knuckles Khaotix was it's ending - no spoilers, I just found it lacking. You missed a few American sports titles - the most notable would be "NBA Jam."
    I got the games I used to play on this (as well as the system itself) well after the system was discontinued (the system was $20!), which meant what I got that sucked wasn't as bad. I had fun with both Virtua titles, the aforementioned "Jam," the game you bashed "Mortal Kombat II," Star Wars Arcade," "Doom," "NFL Quarterback Club," and "Knuckles." The only ones in years since I regretted missing were "Tempo" and "Kolibre." The system itself gets a bad rap - had they combined and packed that and the Sega CD together a couple of years prior, it likely would have done better and people would have produced some games that would rival or beat the SNES! It gets a much harsher rap than it deserves, IMHO.
