I changed to eating whole food plant based/no oil 3.5 years ago at the age of 67. Dropped my cholesterol from 268 to 132, reversed my "pre-diabetes"; blood pressure dropped from 140/90 ON MEDICATION to 110/70 OFF medication...and I lost 85 lbs!!! This stuff works!!!!

It is the no oils in your diet that gave the results. You could have been eating steak and eggs and cheese, no oils, no sugar/ starch. Seed oils are so highly toxic that any diet that eliminates them gives great results. For me, I’ll stick to my steak!

I've been vegan for 4 years now, and objectively, I dropped from 88kg to 60kg in the first year (Inseam dropped from 38" to 31"), felt way lighter on my joints, more energetic, needed less sleep. I feel great. Just some considerations: Be sure you're getting B12 (in most fortified food / plant based milk, or supplement), DHA / EPA (Omega-3), Iron (if needed, always take with vitamin C that increases absorption two fold), do your blood work couple times a year, and you're set. And I'd be missing something if I didn't say that eating a meal where animals didn't pay a price, just adds to the flavor of the food.
I love Bob & Brad, so humble 💜

Wow! Thank you for sharing. I noticed I was gaining weight. I was looking at what was different in my diet and I was eating more cheese. I had arguments with multiple people about it. They said that it was impossible for cheese to cause me to gain weight. When I took cheese out of my diet the weight gain stopped. And this video supports my theory.
I also am so grateful that he had a visual to show us. He explained calories in such a way that it makes it easier to understand. Doctors say you have to eat better, or change your diet but they don't explain what to change or what's better.

What Greg should have mentioned, when you eat a sweet potato, you need to have a little fat with it because the beta carotene ( Vitamin A ) in the sweet potato is fat soluble - without fat your body won't be able to make use of the vitamin A.

Gave up dairy about a month ago mostly because I finally put 2 and 2 together and realized I'm lactose intolerant. My stomach was constantly turning, gurgling, gassy, bloated, I had daily headaches, tired, joint stiffness, constant nasal drainage which also lead to sore throats, plugged up nose when sleeping which lead to a crappy nights sleep. Cut dairy out and most of those symptoms went away within days others took a bit longer. Getting rid of dairy has been pretty much life changing for me. I use to make fun of people saying how bad dairy was and how humans should not consume it but now I truly believe it.

If you mix that salad bowl with olive oil you'll get 1000 calories, and considering that you won't be able to finish it during the day means you will get only 1000 calories per day.

Its not so much that you should cut it out rather find options to put in your diet to create volume to your diet. Those of us with binge issues could ear something healthy but eat so much of it that it would lead to obesity. Add a massive salad with low calories as a side to your pizza you get the fullness without having to eat a whole pizza which allows you to meet caloric goals and lead to healthy weight-loss without deprivation and hunger pains

I just started a whole foods plant based lifestyle 10 days ago. I sometimes consume plant oils, mostly in small amounts of nuts or seeds; on rare occasion, i use a scant amount of walnut oil or olive oil for flavor. I intend to eat avocados.I eat salad with a flavored vinegar herb dressing. I enjoy plenty of veggies, some fruit, whole grains, and legumes, all of which I love, and I don't feel hungry or crave foods. (I used to be a cheese and dairy fan.) I feel full fast and eat 4 or sometimes 5 times a day. I feel energetic and content. I have lost 4 lb so far. My BMI is 25.0, and I would like to get to BMI around 23.0 within 6 months. In summary, I incorporate fats in my diet, but all are from plant sources and I use them in small quantities.

Lots of comments below about how much wasn't discussed, like the benefits of consuming good fats, and how fats also help you feel sated long after eating, etc.... but what I think the point of this discussion is that loosing weight is really about being aware of the calorie content of foods regardless of the quality of that calorie. Weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. This was just about understanding what 500 calories really looks like using common foods, how easy it is to consume a lot of calories in a short period of time (I see you nuts), and for this nutritionist, what worked for him in terms of his health and weight loss journey.

Actually looking at calorie density and portion size has made it plain to me what I am doing wrong. Calorie dense foods are yummy, but so easy to overdose on. I always remember the old adage that the difference between a helpful medicine and a poison is the size of the dose. I eat really healthily, cook everything fresh ever day but I eat too much. I will attempt to remedy this. Thank men for making it easy to visualise.

You wouldn't use that amount of oil on a salad. If you mixed a bit of oil with some balsamic vinegar that would be sufficient and you would get some fats in your diet!

I agree with you, I mix balsamic and olive oil for my salads too. I don’t agree with a lot of what he has said here. It may have worked for him and that’s great, but would not work for me. I think extremes are unrealistic, once off a “diet” people often go back to the other spectrum and put on more weight than they lost. I don’t believe in diets, I believe in meal plans, moderation, the combination and amount of foods are the keys. Of course exercise in combination with the right foods can only lead to weight loss and balance. It’s really different and personal for everyone. I’m sorry, giving up cheese? That’s ridiculous, small portions on occasion is the way to enjoy good variety of hand crafted cheeses, and I do.

I've been counting calories since I was a teenager, and it has always worked for weight loss and maintenance for me. It's the most balanced form of eating, because I never had to cut out any foods. Willpower is easier with this regime because I wasn't depriving myself, just watching amounts. I quickly memorized calories of repeat foods, so don't let math scare you. Therefore, I was consistent and focused for long periods of time. Add in some moderate exercise to get that blood flowing, and you're golden!

Fats are necessary but ideally you shouldn't be eating extracted processed fats (even the so called "healthy" fats I.e. Coconut oil, flaxseed oil, avacado oil). The fats you consume should be in the foods you eat themselves. John Rose, Dr. Colin Campbell, and Dan McDonald emphasize that. And this health expert is correct in his assertion. Just because a fat is extracted from a high quality food doesn't make it a high quality fat in its packaged processed form. You have to consider the means by which the fat was extracted, the amount of time that extracted fat has been sitting on the shelf, the concentration of the extracted fat vs eating that fat in the form of the fruit that it came from itself, and whether or not its rancid. Why is it that actual avacadod expire faster than avacado oil. It doesn't take an expert to realize that that extracted fat is either heavily processed or its rancid despite whatever marketing is used to make it appealing to healthful minded ppl. The best diet to eat is a raw Whole Foods plant based diet in which nothing is extracted but rather consumed in the form of the actual food itself. If you want avacado oil, EAT an ACTUAL avacado. If you want coconut oil EAT an ACTUAL coconut. If you want flax oil EAT actual flaxseeds. Extracting fat from the foods you eat not only puts you in s position to eat highly concentrated rancid oils, but you also don't get the fiber and other balancing properties of the food that the fat is extracted from like the fiber, anti inflammatory nutrients, and the hepato-enhancing nutrients that the food as to offer besides just the fat. If you want fat EAT the actual food that the fat comes from in its most organic raw form. Don't extract it!

PharaohMahk thank you... all these people just made an assumption he said never eat fat... he just showed you the density, you can have a little here and there and have a well rounded diet.
most people are using gallons of butter, coconut oil and olive oil then saying I'm getting my healthy fats...
no you're excessive in calories JUST AS HE POINTS OUT. he never said completely eliminate, all you have to do is be mindful... a teaspoon here and there is probably enough.
as this intelligent guy says: it's extracted and unhealthy the way it's processed so you can tell yourself whatever you want to feel good but your pipes look like those greasy cheese pipes the more you pile it on. you're not a metal car engine, you don't need to coat everything in oil! LOL

I take your point, but we still need oil in our diets, our bodies need fats and if you are following a vegetarian/vegan or plant based diet then you are not getting a lot of fats naturally as you would from meat and fish. For instance, seeds such as flax, if you eat a lot of seeds in their whole form you don't extract the oil, they are better eaten ground, if you want your body to absorb them, otherwise they are unlikely to be broken down by the body.

I know this does contain animal fat/protein but 1 sweet potato with a dollup of low-fat Greek yogurt is delish! Yoghurt works great with gravies & as a dressing on salads, whether sweet or spicy. Dump garlic & herbs in yogurt the eve before & have excellent dressing for potatoes & salads. Sweetened yogurt with lemon makes a very refreshing dressing for romaine lettuce, or just use as dip for celery.

I’m a personal trainer. Why didn’t he mention the huge difference in the types of carbs the Eminem‘s are from the lettuce. They are not the same types of carbs. There are healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs. The types of healthy carbs after consumed go to fuel whatever the specific food has in it. Where as the Eminem carbs are make up of nothing nutritional so they body can’t use it to fuel anything resulting in going straight to fat. You can have the same amount of that lettuce in calories as the Eminem’s. Even if you get sugar free Eminem’s (if they exist) you will never gain weight from having even a 5,000 calorie salad-only diet. Because the carbs in the lettuce is so nutritional all’s you would have to do is go for a run for the carbs to be used elsewhere and not turn to fat. I feel like this guy is a tiny bit uneducated on that OR he simply forgot to mention the very important fact that there are healthy carbs and junk carbs that can’t be turned into or used for anything but fat

Food is not about just calories and losing weight. It has much more to offer, sadly there is no mention of the mental health that this weightless diet creates. Plus the amount of stress our body goes under when kept under such a rigorous diet.
Our body is not just about the aesthetics or looks or shape, there is a mind in their too that needs health, calm and happiness. Good for you Bob and Brad! Thank you for this valuable and informative video. I'm a new subscriber.
I have too laugh when people respond to a person describing what calorie density means as being "fat-phobic". I think some people tend to panic whenever they hear someone supporting a whole food plant based diet because for many decades we've all been over saturated with aggressive media advertising touting alleged health benefits of meat and dairy with lots of oil, oil, oil, and the Dept of Agriculture's biased dietary recommendations, so its no wonder that we cant even entertain the idea of consuming anything else.
Its good to see this video, as it reflects the current fact that our government has recently been rethinking their history of dietary recommendations and The World Health Organization's recent warning about consuming processed meats is being taken seriously. We need to stop being afraid of change and new ideas. For a country that is so wealthy and powerful, isn't it rather ironic that the US ranks among the top three countries with the highest rate of Cardio Vascular Disease, Diabetes, Stroke, Cancer, Osteoporosis, etc, compared to other countries where these diseases are rare or non-existent but their diet is predominantly unprocessed and plant based. Countless studies over past decades have repeatedly proven this. Check out NutritionFacts.org or read the China Study or Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease.
Like other commentators, I too, have switched away from the Standard American Diet due to decades of obesity related health problems and have been consuming a whole foods plant based diet for the past 2 years now. I will be turning 60 in less than 3 months. I too, feel like a teenager since going plant based! No regrets at all, never going back.

The difference, however, is that they prepared their own food and ate from primarily farm-fresh ingredients. There is very little nutrition in that particular lettuce he has on the table. Also, the fruits he's chosen are relatively expensive, especially when they are not seasonal. This video concerns me a little, although I will admit that I see the bigger point he's trying to make. I started following a WFPB no oil about two years ago due to having researched nutrition as I had some chronic illnesses and was referred to cardiologist. My cholesterol was thru the roof plus other bloods out of normal ranges and I had for years been a runner and thought I’d been eating healthy. After only six months of wfpb my cholesterol, and other bloods normalised. I feel so much better, I have always been a decent cook but now I make so many more dishes using options and mixing foods I’d never have thought would go before! I feel great, people have commented many times on my skin and ask what creams I use. I don’t feel anything from my arthritis or my other chronic illnesses.
So yes if you want to continue eating meat, dairy, oil fine but look up what it does to your body and perhaps cut it down if you can’t or don’t wish to cut it out completely, you will notice a difference in your health.
Oh and I eat far more now than I ever did due to the calorie density, as per this video.

My diet is plant based too. The animals I eat, eat plants and I eat them. Lettuce is loaded with water that’s why it’s low in calories. I lost 50 lbs eating meat, dairy, veggies whatever just not eating sugar and grains and simple carbs.

Plant-based is the healthiest way without the animals, skip the middleman.

Whole food plant based diets are amazing! So much more energy, lower cholesterol, lower bloodplessure, skin clears up, constipation dissappears, sleep is better, you name it.. People who watch this and are inspired to try it: DO IT! You will never regret it!!
And dont forget you save all those cute little animals and use way less resources!
And you even linked Michael Greger, McDougall and Caldwell, so exited to see that! They tell the truth, no question.

Taking on a topic that is not in your area of expertise can damage your credibility. That did not happen here because 1. you brought in an expert, and 2. you approached the interview with appropriate humility. Kudos.

I started putting just warm water and some spices on my potato. It tastes great. Now I wonder why I ever put anything like butter or sour cream on my potato...or even yogurt..., it's not needed. Tastes just as great without them...

      Amp yogurt is not healthy.
Animal proteins are the causes of most of our most deadly diseases. If you eat well there is no need for additional probiotics.

Great show on good diet; however, it is also important to also talk about the role of various nutrients, and understand the role of balance in the diet. For instance fat is essential for proper brain function. Omega 3, found in olive oil and other health fats, the richest source being fish oils, are building blocks of the brain. Also medium chain fatty acids, have been found to assist in brain function and improve the condition of people suffering with dementia / Alzheimers, just as one example.
That aside, I love your show, I am in my 70’s, and have made good use of information on exercises to relieve back and shoulder pain, and maintain good mobility generally; plus you are down to earth, light-hearted and friendly, and that makes life better.

A balanced and informed perspective on the components of nutrition would mention protein. Protein is (like fat, though not as much) also more calorically dense than carbs or fiber (or water), and yet (also like fat), some of it is essential to our diets. Don't get me wrong, I agree that caloric density considerations can help with weight loss, but I can also tell you from experience that if you ONLY focus on caloric density, it is very easy to fail to get enough protein, and end up losing the other thing that helps you lose weight, which is muscle volume. I do also agree that carbs are not the villain, but in truth, there is no villain; there is only our tendency to overeat those food items to which we are most attracted, and that is usually some mixture of both fat and sugar.
