The Mercedes' call to let their drivers fight it out on track was very risky. Piastri was catching both on fresher tyres and Russell's tactic slowed them down allowing Piastri to catch them. The sensible thing to do was let Hamilton through earlier and allow Russell to stay in Hamilton's slipstream, keeping him away from the fast closing Piastri. The fact Mercedes didn't do that suggests they were more concerned with rewarding Russell OVER Hamilton.
There's no doubting Russell's bravery, deciding to do the race on one tyre change. But Hamilton had driven the better race right from the first lap when he passed Perez and the second lap when he took the lead from Leclerc. Some might say this is karma at work!

Mercedes need to hold their collective heads in shame honestly. What the fuck are is Mercedes even doing here? They found something off with George's car and there they are trying to pull a fast one on the FIA by not drawing the fuel before the weight was taken.
Is something wrong with Toto? This isn't normal behaviour honestly. It was abundantly clear they tried to engineer this win for George and it shows they have their priorities fucked up. They never told Lewis he was racing Russell and that Russell was on a one stopper until much later. Why even take the bloody risk knowing full well if you are found wanting its a DSQ? WHY?
Merc should be focused on grabbing every possible point not trying to engineer race wins for one driver over the other. Its BS and it reeks of desperation. One more lap and Piastri would have overttaken both Mercedes drivers. No team orders given despite that being the best call.

Some of the explanation does not fully make sense or maybe we don't understand the technical issues. We do not think the deg on the tires due to the one stop strategy has led to the 1.5kg weight deficit for George. All drivers had to do the same number of laps on the same circuit, why would one driver have such a sizable weight loss on the tires? Alonso also did a one stop on the hard tire just like George, but his car was fine. A more logical explanation is that from the start the amount of fuel in the car might have been less than required and led to a weight gain in the end. For many it was difficult to understand that George was on 34 laps old hard tires and still could keep SLH at a distance on fresher tires. That looked very strange. Also, extracting information from the post race interview, the Merc strategy for both drivers was agreed to be a two stop, and changed to a one stop mid race for George. SLH had also requested a one stop but was denied by the Team. So, it might have been a calculated mistake that ultimately was not successful. However, we must say that George drove a phenomenal race and deserved to be awarded points. But, there will be talking issues within the Merc family during the summer brake.

Surely they know how much rubber is lost, over say 10 laps, for each different compound tyre? It is not only the driver's decision to "box" for a tyre change. Research by the team wrt track temp, degradation speed of the tyres, laps remaining and a miriad of other results gathered from practices and past races are all collected and used by race strategist to analyse and put a path for the race, for the team managers and the driver, to formulate their plans such as A, B or C.

@@richy69ifyEven with all that math the 1.5 kg advantage would have come to play in the final 11 laps. 0.03 seconds for 11 laps is 0.3 seconds advantage and the final gap between Lewis and George was about 0.5 seconds? Also the lower weight would have aided in getting a better traction off the apex since the car was lighter which we saw was an advantage with which Russell fended off Lewis since he had a much better traction off the apex which with that much deg shouldn’t exist not to mention there was not much difference between both in straight line speed. I do think its an advantage for Russell albeit kudos to for him managing to pull this Hail Mary strategy.

EVERYTHING is hyper calculated during testing testing testing testing mods and more testing. Tyres? 1.5kg loss from the tyres AND all the fuel was not drained? Another point, since when has being underweight disqualify a winner? I cant remember. This sounds like more F1 shenanigans.

The answer part of your question is after each race some cars are checked for weight (it's sorta "randomly" chosen) so Mercedes probably hoped they would not get picked for the weight check. What they didn't count though was that the top three finishing cars are more likely to be picked for this weight check. They really screwed themselves over.

To be clear - it is said that an F1 tyre can lose as much as 3 kg/tyre (from 42 kg each to 39 kg each) after a long stint. And in Spa the car is off the grid just after the finish line and has not had the usual opportunity to drive thru the discarded rubber to get some of that rubber weight back on the car. The 1.5 kg of missing weight (1.5 kg/798 kg = 0.18796992 %) is just short of the FIA regulations for car weight. It makes ESPN's headline of "Mercedes' inexcusable DQ...How did Mercedes get it so wrong?" seems quite hyperbolic! It's like that time I got 99.812 on a maths quiz and my teacher and parents berated me for how I could have gotten it so wrong?!? C'mon man!
