"I'm the one that was ripped from the Earth and exposed to the Sun" is by far my favorite line from this amazing song
It's so fucking powerful. And tragic. And awesome.
I'm imagining like a field and someone just plunges their hand into the dirt and then rips out a little baby Mercury and raises him up like something out of the Lion King.
Lord Ruyan “Exposed to the Sun” Sun. Sun. SUN WUKONG
for some reason i just thought of the planet mercury :) like it's more near to the sun than to earth
Hell's Mirror yoooooooo
Am i the only one who wants these 2 to change and have a better life? this song basically says they've been through hell as children. 1 beat and abused, 1 alone and unloved.
Yeah, especially in season 4 they look really uncomfortable around Salem and her associates, I feel like they did a lot of what they did out of fear of Cinder and Roman's wrath, but with Roman who knows where and Cinder crippled and muted, they might be thinking of a way to escape
Tyler Krickeberg Yeah but they are also shown to care about Cinder and will try and fail to convince her before leaving
+Tyler Krickeberg I know right? Esmerald looks like she is inside of a nightmare which can be understand...
Emerald*
I doubt Mercury will turn. He (unlike Em) had no problem with mass murder in Vale.
Well he was raised by an assassin. Death is kind of in his job description.
Part of me finds it strange to picture these two singing together. Half the time they want nothing to do with each other, and yet they can share such a heart pounding duet?
They treat each other more like brother and sister. They hang out with each other but still get into sibling-like little moments like in Vol. 3 Ep. 7 at the end when they were taking Mercury away from the arena after Yang, "broke Mercury's legs."
Mercury: **Sarcastically** Ohhh, Doc, tell me. Will I ever walk again?
Emerald: *Punches Mercury*
Mercury: Ow! What's your deal!?
+FlyntofRWBYNation They're more of a close colleague relationship but can strongly relate and empathise each other
I guess the only thing they hate more than each other are other people
"The bigger they are, then the more that they bleed."
Damn
they're calling Yatsuhashi literally a fatass for his size, as long as I guess
an acknowledgement a threat and a diss all in one line
Hell yeah. It's not about victory, it's about doing damage. When I was in Smash Bros tournaments, I didnt give it my all, but when I played on the side, I'd mop the floor with them. No pride, no title...decimating them behind the scenes made me feel better lol

Most of Merc's backstory hasn't explored, according to Miles.
Life Finds a Way Blah, I think most of Emerald's life was not known.
They're just nobodies.
@@trevorhensley3185 mercury is NOT a nobody... emerald actually is. But mercury's father raised soully to train him into a killing machine. Even stealing mercury's semblance from him because "its a crutch" he was to return the semblance once mercury could beat him. Mercury ended up killing his abusive father and his semblance was never returned to him. Making him one of the best villians in rwby because he kinda like rock lee from naruto. Can only fight cqc and cannot use any super powers like everyone else.
@@lifefindsaway8987 They FINALLY explored it, come Volume 6.
We need more Mercury and Emerald development.....especially Mercury. More screen time ASAP.
Joseph Ercanbrack well maybe vol6 now, if the writers remember what was meant to be so intriguing about these characters
If Mercury really have silver eyes, it could be the most important plot twist of the show
Wait, aren't his eyes grey?
Luna SlyFire Mah we don't know, there is no really differences between his eyes and Ruby's ones... For now, his eyes are "grey" with no power, but he maybe has not revealed his powers..
Most people see Emerald as the redeemable one, but I wouldn't mind seeing a reserve development. *VOLUME 5 SPOILERS AHEAD* what if Cinder's death (if she did die) causes Emerald to spiral and aspire to take her place, she did admire her after all. Hell, what if Emerald was the last person in her thoughts and she inherits the maidens power while Mercury realises things have gone way too far.
You can say what you want about rwby in regards to writing, but they mastered the art of telling a story through the themes.
2 years till I found someone with the same opinion thanks for existing

idk why all the characters are wigging out about not being able to defeat salem, if u rewatch the ozma backstory u can see several ways to save their world and a lot arent even longshots. im making a video on that @@Blitzunivrse
I heard the way they made the themes was that Jeff and Casey just got some sentences on what the songs should be about and then they got free reign over everything, and honestly, the result is amazing. Lionize, as an example, portrays Adam exactly like the antagonist he should've been. Hateful, egotistical, rebellious and dangerous, while also mentioning parts of his past as a slave.
wow, i was never able to fully understand the lyrics. It's crazy, the backstory we get from these two
Ollie-C Yeah...me too and when i looked better at lyrics everything was clear. This two are not guilt for what they become...
More backstory in their song than the actual story
Elina Carmina
Actually, it seems as though they were under duress. Emerald was born into a bad place where she probably had to steal food just to eat. She may have taken it too far, but maybe she felt the need to. She obviously had no love and comfort growing up, and maybe had no control over anything in her life. Stealing gave her control over something.
Mercury was the child of an assassin. He was trained to be an assassin, influenced by his own father (the one man in his life that should have been looking out for him). Children are very easily influenced. He might have been threatened into killing the one guy, then his father used that guilt over the "one" guy to make him kill many. Eventually, the guilt for him would have turned into bitterness and anger, because the world never helped him, let him be beaten down and abused his whole life.
But that's all just speculation. Maybe they're just insane psychopaths that like to steal and kill, but that seems unlikely.
They both felt trapped, probably. In Volume 3, Chapter 7, it's easy to tell Emerald is in a bad place when Cinder finds her. In the dark between flashbacks, Cinder tells Emerald that she'll "never have to go hungry again." If I was a starving, unwanted girl, I would cling onto and be loyal to whoever saved me. For Emerald, it just played out that Cinder is the one who did that for her. Mercury is obviously abused most of his life, and his father may have been the one to cut off his legs to make them weapons. Eventually he got fed up and killed his own father just because he felt the need to to get away. Cinder pulled him out of that hell hole he lived and gave him real purpose, forming his loyalty.
In America, if a jury heard all of this, the charges would be dropped and Cinder would take the fall for all of it, probably.
And I'm not trying to be mean! Just sharing my thoughts.
judging from Emeralds reaction to the grimm birthing vats, and some of Salems other pets I'm thinking she might switch sides
Cinder taking the Fall . . . I see what you did there, AYYYYY! ;)
This is lyrically the best song in all three volumes.
Trust In You Caffeine is pure awesomeness. This is pure awesomeness PLUS very interesting lyrics for Em and Merc
Trust In You except this has actual personal meaning to the characters rather than just being a song for hype. Don't get me wrong caffeine is good though
That's your opinion dude.
Hmm neon was good to
Neon is great, this is great. Lots of songs in Vol. 3 are great.
Damn... I always liked Emerald and Mercury, and this song just deepens my liking for them further. For a pair of lapdogs, they can sure kick some ass.
A villain is only as good as their lackeys.
Kepler Kitten And then they beat Coco and Yatsu.. happy and broken at the same time.
What do you mean??? Mercury could beat any of the main characters he has strategic mind and could find their weak points and he held back in his fight with Yang nearly beating her
...At least, they could before Season 4 came around.
I kind of always liked this two. They are the bad guys and doesn't hesitate to kill but you can't deny the fact that they are pretty darn cool. Plus, their dynamics are interesting to watch, don't you think so?
yeah but i kinda have this small feeling emerald might become good cause she did say she felt bad about some things but probably not
RAINBOWBUBBLETEA I bet a lot of us feel that way. Emerald's reason for following Cinder is to "never go hungry again," and you really don't need world destruction for that. I think Emerald will have second thoughts for following Cinder and Mercury.
True but Emerald does seem to have more loyalty towards Cinder than Mercury does.
Levi
that's why it's more interesting that Emerald seems to have second thought during the fall of Beacon, rather than Mercury
Mercury was raised by an abusive assassin so it makes sense that he doesn't really have morals. I think all it would take for him to leave Cinder is just finding his own reason to fight for. Thats what Cinder gave him right after he killed his father. At that moment Mercury didn't really have a purpose and following Cinder meant he didn't have to worry about what he'll do next. In the end, Mercury will just do what he wants. He's fine working with Cinder right now but if he finds something he'd rather do, he will. Emerald probably will leave Cinder at some point. I just hope for her sake that Cinder takes it well because if not, she will hunt her down or send Mercury to do so if he is still in league with her.

What makes you think that part is referencing Mercury?
Mercury was somehow always my favourite, although he's one of the bad guys. But you can't deny the fact that his fighting style is badass.
If your gonna start having a crisis of identity or some crap keep me out of it
I believe he will switch sides, from the beginning I saw good in him, and normally I see the worst in people, only few characters are exceptions and me seeing a hero in a villain isn't common, though with RWBY it seems to be... there are several villains I see some hero in, (Mercury, Adam, Neo, the least expected three lol) but I honestly how much I hate to say it see something that reminds me of Goro Akechi, "born of a nightmare a murderer's son" makes me think of Goro Akechi a lot, since his father is also a murderer and thanks to their fathers Mercury and Goro had bad lives growing up, I just hope things go differently for Mercury...
@@HPKuro Who are characters you don't see the good in.
It's just Caiopera and kickboxing, man.
Like, seriously he's in a world where half the wildlife can murder you on a moment's notice, everyone has some sort of superpower, his got taken away and he just...kicks everything.
This is one of my favorite RWBY songs. Not only it is catchy, the lyrics explains about Mercury and Emerald's backstory and skills, and their fight against Coco and Yatsuhashi.
i think it's my #1 favorite haha
A villains song and a duet. The two things that always are awesome. COMBINED.
Back after learning more about Mercury's backstory in Volume 6....someone give this kid a hug, please.
*Casually bring up how their trauma makes them badass*
Mercury: Oh hello there! did you know I was abused by my father?
Emerald: Hey! Did you know I was a homeless thief before I became a murderer?
I love those two.
Like proper RPG characters.
Ha ha.
@@samgafford2371 Wait are you... no that's Gifford.
chiffmonkey there's a Sam Gifford?
I find it interesting that Mercury refers to his father as a "murderer". Usually, that's set as an insult directed to a person's actions. Given what we've seen from Mercury, we know he doesn't have a problem killing people. But maybe this means he's against unnecessary death? Like, death that doesn't further their end goal?
Interesting, nevertheless.
or it could be directed at the fact Marcus Black was an assassin who killed for money rather than any sort of goal, where as Merc might justify his actions as "all for the cause" or at least "All for my friends Cinder and Emerald"
Then again we hardly know anything about him or his backstory but it occurs to me that we also never heard anything about Merc's mother and it sort of seems Marcus was raising his son alone...
DSGamma he whas abussed by his father and trained as a assasin so its his father fault
Maybe he called himself "A murderer' Son" because it's the only thing people ever called him ? Not "Merc' the Fighter", "Merc' the Asshole", but just "Son of Black" ? I don't think he tries to justify his action, he's enough lucide to know that what he does is bad but doesn't care either.
My interpretation (Like some in the comments) would be that he wants to have his own name, not being the Murderer' Son, Cinder's associate or Salem's Minion. Just Mercury. In good or bad ? I don't know and actually don't care, he would be good in both.
I think he just called his father a murderer because that's what he was. He understands that the only difference between them is that he's a better murderer. The song's partly about the horrible lives that drove both of them to accept Cinder's offer, and Mercury would have turned out very differently if his father had been a decent person.
Didnt he murder his father?
Hearing Merc's line about being abused and defiled by his father takes a whole new meaning because of Vol.6, just damn. I didn't even really give much thought to who most of the songs perspectives are from but realizing that this was Em and Merc was eye opening.
I really like these villains. They don't care if they have to lose to achieve their goal. Not for pride or fame, just for the hell of it. Mercury is my favorite
I used to think that when lyrics say "A hint of the flavor of steel" it was because blood is said to taste like steel, not because Mercury's steel boots... And well, it makes so much sense now
I'm pretty sure those weren't his boots.
deathshadow2492 His feet of steal.
Yes that was a pun.
Eh, blood tastes more like iron

That’s one of my favorite fights because of its sheer speed. No time wasted just pure adrenaline
Okay so you mean to tell me Mercury is one of the strongest characters in RWBY and he doesn't even have a semblance,,,, RT please give my boy more screen time
I am hoping he gains his semblance back, I am guessing it was a pretty strong one for his father to think of it as a crutch
Marie Thomson I think he was referring to having a semblance in general
@@fatbastard9147 not all semblances are strong or even useful in combat, so I'd say that Mercury's was powerful enough for the father to take it away, not all semblances are crutches and an assassin like him would know that, more so since he could steal them.
So I'd argue that it was strong enough for him to think of it as a crutch.
Yeah because for Mercury dad having the ability to take away other semblances is pretty broken. Hell Mercury probably had a semblance that might be something like copying semblances
Mercury still has aura though, which means his body can grow in strength/speed over time like any other fighter and when you combine that with a great martial arts style there's no reason why he should be weak.
Defiled by a father makes sense now considering that Mercury’s dad stole his semblance.
Only took 3 more volumes for that to get revealed...
He literally took away a piece of his son's soul.
That is *definitely* defilement.
I hope the father faked his death somehow. He was an assassin after all.
@@Wowluckylolz I'm pretty sure Merc would have confirmed the kill...

english isn't my mother tongue so i really didn't understand the lyrics until i read them here, so thanks :))
1:15
The chorus always makes me shiver
You know, im starting to believe that out of the team that they made in the vital Festival, Cinder might actually be the weakest one if we don't include her maiden powers. Because in their fight against the fall maiden, Mercury and Emerald were pretty much the mvp's, Cider just took the wheel when she saw an opportunity, and lets not even mention Neo, she is straight up the most broken melle fighter in the series so far and forced Cinder to use her maiden powers in order to have a chance. Good god, I think even Roman was stronger her when he was alive, so why was she chosen as a member of Salem's inner circle again?
It’s more she came to rely more and more on the Maiden powers. Even without them or when she doesn’t use them, she’s shown to her pretty skilled with the swords and the fire dust especially.
Salem probably needed her because she is a girl and maiden powers can only go to girls, plus it seems she would’ve been easy to manipulate. Salem couldn’t have used Emerald or Neo because Neo only cared about Roman and Emerald wouldn’t have been there without Cinder
Even in song, Mercury and Emerald are fighting.
this is helpful for me because now I can sing the song without knowing the lyrics when I'm ready
"I'm sorry you didn't have a mommy that loved you, but I had a father who hated me."
I would say it's the best comeback of the series but I remembered
"If you were one of my men I would have you shot"
"If I were one of your men I'd shoot myself"
I keep coming back to this banger, its so good!
0:53 I just realised that those last few lines:
"You're looking tall
You're looking tough
I'm sorry dude, it's not enough
Your girlfriends purse won't help you win this duel"
I think they're talking about the Coco and Yatsuhashi vs Emerald and Mercury fight
@Yifeng Toh I think it was just a way to taunt them, idk, they're not together tho pre sure
@Yifeng Toh No. Coco is a lesbian, while I'd wager Yatsu has feelings for Velvet.
@@miarocksgaming85 It was mocking Coco's handbag weapon, and hinting at her being a lesbian.
Yeesh, I'm not sure what exactly "defiled by a father" refers to, but if it's what I'm thinking, Mercury wins the darkest backstory contest.
it has many definitions but i think that by 'defiled' he meant 'raped'
Weiyell Well for one, there was no mother mentioned; no one else in the house to relieve some tension. For another, Marcus Black was a terrible human being.
ROFL HE DIDN'T RAPE HIM HE CHOPPED OFF HIS LEGS IM DYING OMG
Mr Vexx What do you think "defiled" means? Because you don't use that word to describe amputation. Besides, the question was brought up at an RTX months before V4 and none of the cast or writers really denied the claim. In fact, Mercury's missing legs might not have even been his father's doing, though he probably is the one who replaced them.
Rogue Pylon Do you honestly think Roosterteeth is going to touch on a subject like rape in the show?
I feel like Mercury could turn. He kinda was forced to join cinder, or she would have killed him next to his father. When people say he enjoys being evil, I mean, he was raised to kill his enemies and have no mercy, so dont be shocked when he kills someone in cold blood (example: Tukson). Im not saying he should be completly good, but he would be much better as an anti-hero (like dead pool, or red hood).
I like your profile picture and name. Yuri Lowenthals the best
I'm very late to this, but I think this may be the case. (*Please correct me if I am wrong, I haven't seen the show in a while*) Mercury is the only one of the BBEGs who questions those he serves. Sure, his reasoning was interrupted by the **simp** that is Tyrian, but Mercury just outright tells Emerald that he had doubts. Only after Cinder's defeat does Emerald start to see his side and even Hazel sits on the fence, but Mercury is the only BBEG without a personal connection to the witch. I bet sometime before Volume 12, Mercury switches sides, even if it gets him killed
He wouldnt be anti hero hed be neutral chaotic although he himself is immature hes too old to force change a whole new perspective hed be on no ones side but his own

Volume 6 episode 9 adds a whole lot of new meaning to some of Mercury's lines in this song oof

they are like a badass version of team rocket somehow .__. always showing up with a fake smile tricking everyone and then fucking them up xD
Da Notti Team rocket 2.0 now with actual skill
Amen.
Da Notti And they are more badass. That they don't need no disguise. They want you to know they're coming for you.
and cinder is meowth always coming up with them evil plans x3
Adrianna Arcuri what about the disguise of having real legs when they fake?
I can't get over how the lyrics works so well with the song I can't
My favorite part of the scene with this song, is when Mercury is creating a huge tornado from his sick break dancing moves
Easily my favorite song in the 1st 3 volumes! Their silhouettes look badass in this too!
"Im the one who rose out of filth and was loved by no one"
And me, I'm the one who love you, Emerald
I love this song, it's like the villains are dragging me through a fight while giving info about themselves, insulting me, and boasting, all at an energizing and breakneck pace.
This is one of my fav songs EVER i keep this on repeat almost every day!
Coco and Yatsuhashi: *exist*
Mercury and Emerald: "I'm about to end this man's whole career"
Might just be me, but for some reason I want a Mercery vs. Qrow match now.
Personally, I'm voting for even more out there, I want Jaune vs Mercury
You don't like Jaune very much, do you?
KojiroNoGanryu
Jaune's not ready to die yet :(
CrystalCake x That's what I'm saying
Here's betting that Qrow is Mercury's biological foster (and Marcus is a foster). Their confrontation would be intense!
“The bigger they are the more that they bleed
The deeper the scars that won’t heal”
I was repeating that while gutting orcs in a video game and my dad just looked at me like *Dafuk.
Bruh. Tf were you playing Wh40k Ultramarine or Shadow of War?🤣🤣🤣
@James McLaughlin Shadow of war.
RWBY's bad guys have really great character designs (especially with their weapons) but they lack development from their backstories to now. I wish Rooster Teeth would develop them a little more instead of just showing us who they were. I like this song because it tells about 2 of the supporting villains backstories. I really wish the creators of RWBY showed more of it and the characters "breaking point". I really love the show though. I like it a lot more than cartoons and anime hat are on TV.
DJ K.A.K yeah... the show focus’ a lot more on RWBY as a team then the rest of the show did with any other character really.
But I guess part of them felt like, “ok, you now know these characters backstories. so I’m gonna make you wait until volume 6 to get any development of them!”
Hazel in V4 was absolutely terrifying, he was a behemoth of a man, gruff, but softly spoken, and had somewhat of a windchime motif, hell, even Ozpin feared him, to an extent, but, come V5, when he actually fought, he was just Diet Hulk. And he had no interesting motivation for wanting Ozpin dead.
@@generalwashingtoad6516 SPOILERS FOR V8
Hazel’s turn in the last bit of his life and dying so Salem could suffer a devastating attack from Oscar, Ozpin, and The Long Memory does show he had a little development
@@generalwashingtoad6516 and that’s an insult to Hulk because only a poorly written Hulk is a dumb brute.
Can we just admire the magnificent drumming
Caffeine, theme of team CVFY, is a fast song. I'm the One is about Mercury and Emerald, and it's much faster than Caffeine.
And we all know how the fight between team CVFY and CMEN ended.
RWBY is just filled with small things like this.
I hate that their team name is CMEN
Is their team name really CMEN?
@@thomasraines1396 Actually I don't know anymore. I tried to look it up, couldn't find the name of the team.
This was so long ago, that I don't remember where I got the name (carmine). It could also be CMNE.
@@pyromite38 it reminds of how on South Park they constantly call a character “Seamen” instead of “Seaman.”
@sonk the team the entered as couldn't be since they used their real names but didn't have Torchwick
Apart from "Cold" this is definitely my favourite RWBY song thus far.
Agreed.
Hey, +MayvaAva seen vol 4 episode 3?
C Berrie 202 Not yet. Why?
***** Just wanting to exchange opinions and such, talk about it all. My friends won't see it till this coming Saturday when it airs on youtube
C Berrie 202 After you mentioned it, I went and watched it. It is a really fantastic episode. I think Yang might have some sort of PTSD but I'd have to look it up first, which is really sad. (I'd be lying if I said it wasn't entertaining to see the character all angsty.)
This really changes my view on emerald and mercury
it really is sad the way they were raised
i really wanna see an episode where they change it would honestly be awesome to see maybe not change completely but like be neutral or double agents
i really love how the songs' lyrics always talk about the characters on screen and the situation
I had no idea this was about Emerald and Mercury until I read the lyrics. Cool!
How is Casey Lee so freaking awesome?
At the part of:
Just chill here while
I drop into the brush
See you when I land
And you're gonna feel
The crush
I just imagine a fight where Mercury jumps high into the air. Meanwhile, Emerald runs at the opponent only to drop to the ground and slide between their legs while her chain sickles wrap around their legs, making them fall flat on their face. That's when Mercury uses his boot-guns to launch himself towards the ground and slam into the opponent's spine with both feet.
I know they're bad guys, but you have to admit that would be awesome to see.
Finchyay I need this now lol
Jake Gostevsky Probably, but I still think the scene I thought up would be cool to see
this song is enough to tell why vol 3 is still the best in RWBY
I was wondering why I loved this song but now that I can clearly see the lyrics it makes sense. Thanx for this upload Flynt!
Well, one lyric makes much more sense now after Volume 6. “Defiled by a father”, everyone assumed that was referring to rape (until if I recall the show staff Word of God-nuked that), but it’s actually arguably worse, at least in-universe. His father tore out part of his soul, a part he can never get back. Mercury has no Semblance.
Kid Shadow defiled means spoiled in a synonym
@@blessedarethepeacemakers.1457 spoiled as in food. Marcus abused mercury
Spark well I feel bad about him
@@blessedarethepeacemakers.1457 yeah
i want a remix of this to play during the inevitable Emerald vs Mercury fight
"You like the way I dress? Yeah I know I'm fine. The blood's gonna stain but it won't be mine" Moment straight out of the Vytal Festival.
When it says "got not gun" I'm pretty sure its referring to his lack of semblance and he's had to work harder and become tougher than anyone else in order to get to where he is now.
When the songs give more character to the characters than the actual show.
This two characters remind me a lot of me and my best friend, my best friend had a horrible father who use to abuse him and beat him because of that my best friend became suicidal and a person who would always push everyone away as for me I relate to emerald a lot because I grew up with no one loving me then I met my best friend and the rest is history
That's quite the story. My sympathy to both of you.
and then everyone clapped
I hope Emerald and Mercury get a redemption arc.. Mercury seems to think that Salem's side is where he was destined to be, but he looks equally horrified by everything that goes on around there, and Emerald is only on Salem's side, because she's delusional enough to believe that Cinder actually loves and cares about her.
Emerald has been shown to possess something of a moral compass, even if she chooses to ignore it most of the time in her own self-interest.
While Mercury seems to actually enjoy hurting and killing others...
Not to the deranged extent that Tyrian does, but still enough that it makes redeeming him a lot harder, if it's even possible at this point.
