Honestly that scene with velvet kicking ass and coming so far from "random bully victim character" Is amazing... and that part where she uses Penny's weapon to deal the final blow to that one mech is just beautiful.
That whole scene was probably my favorite moment in Volume 3, everything else was just so damn depressing as the little corner of the world we'd spent all our time in thus far was torn down around us as much as it was the characters...and then you get this one little moment where the students are all banding together and carve out one little slice of victory in the midst of all this despair...and the song just works perfectly to compliment the whole damn scene.

I like the idea that this isn't a list of bad shit that's going to happen to the singer, this is a list of _what it would take for them to admit defeat_ The moon has to be gone, the sun stops rising. The sky rains blood, all friends abandon them, all hope, strength and courage are gone, shields are shattered and they're surrounded by wolves and soulless creatures of darkness. In a series I never expect talk of defeat and I never think that the main characters shall ever die, but the idea that they might even be worried and also know that someday it will happen gives me goosebumps. In books the closest thing is the darkest hour, but that's always before the dawn when something good happens. What I want can be summed up as this: The darkest was before the dawn, but sadly the sun refused to rise.

I always get chills around 1:13, when Velvet manifests Penny's swords for the first and presumably last time. In many ways, the Battle of Beacon was the finest hour for a lot of the cast.
So I was watching the last lord of the rings movie, and I was trying really hard not to fangirl over the epic battle that was approaching. You know, the ususal. And then Aragon gave a speech before a battle where they were terribly out numbered and doomed that went like this: "My brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. The day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down - but it is not this day. This day we fight. For all that you hold dear on this good earth. You know, knowing Jeff, I can imagine him writing this the day after he watched Return of the King and didn't even realize he was doing it. I love that about RWBY as a whole. For those who are uncertain about the future of the series, all I wil say that I feel like there is going to be a light in the end of the tunnel considering that DillonGoo (former RWBY animator who now owns his own studio) is interested in picking up the series. If the series ends up getting revived, I feel like this song will be all the more poetic.
Came here from Vol 3 Ep 11. SPOILERS. Velvet was so awesome, but it seems her copies are one-off, and she has to reacquire them after use. I really doubt Penny is gone for good, but if she is, this means the verse at 1:11 accompanies the last time her weapon will ever be used. THOSE FEELS.

Being a robot, even one with an anomalous soul, there's always the 'maybe' that she can be repaired, which is better odds than otherwise. And speaking from a storytelling standpoint, we never really learned her backstory or what the whole deal with her situation was, and the RoosterTeeth crew don't strike me as the type to leave a mystery like that hanging, especially with all the hinting they dropped after her 'death'. So yeah, I'm sure we'll see her up and Combat Ready again, but the thought that "In the time of our final moments / Every dream dies" played behind one of her friends taking up her weapon and fighting like her one last time was too potent an image to leave unsaid.

True. My dad used to look at me funny when I would say I like video game music. So I'll occasionally let him listen to music from games but I would act as though they weren't. Sonic, final fantasy, etc. Then when he praised the songs, I would rub it in his face. I could do the same with some anime.
I started watching RWBY during the lead up to season 2, and I May Fall was my favourite song. Thus, I can't ever associate it with Velvet since I listened to it so much before that scene even existed. It's the Team RWBY song for me, since iirc they don't have a specific song for the whole team.

For some reason I always associate this song with Nora, I like to think that deep down Nora has really bad anxiety and is just as scared of Salem then everyone else but hides it under her bubbly personality similar to how Ren represses his emotions. I think that keeping positive is just her way of dealing with life to the bitter end. We see in Volume 8 that she is already willing to give up her body to help a loved one in need. Nora is a fighter, she has fought her whole life and staying strong throgh the battle is how she keeps herself sane in times of hardship. Idk, just my own headcanon.

I always get chills around 1:13, when Velvet manifests Penny's swords for the first and presumably last time. In many ways, the Battle of Beacon was the finest hour for a lot of the cast.
So I was watching the last lord of the rings movie, and I was trying really hard not to fangirl over the epic battle that was approaching. You know, the ususal.
And then Aragon gave a speech before a battle where they were terribly out numbered and doomed that went like this:
"My brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. The day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down - but it is not this day. This day we fight. For all that you hold dear on this good earth. I bid you stand, men of the west."
And I realized a lot of similarities between the speech and this song.
I know right? I noticed it too.
I was just about to comment the same thing. I get the feeling they took a huge influence from Aragorn's Speech. And I like it.
You know, knowing Jeff, I can imagine him writing this the day after he watched Return of the King and didn't even realize he was doing it. I love that about RWBY as a whole. It's such a pure and inspired show. Monty said something along the lines of keeping your eyes open and seeing and appreciating the things a lot of people don't see. I have and always will agree with that wholeheartedly.

you know when i look back at rwby from now(past vol 3) i find myself thinking "wow in hind sight they kinda gave us a lot of hints that shit would go down." quite often.
Actually the *_very_* first hint was the intro of each V3 episode. It worried me greatly when I first started watching Volume 3...and for good reason :(
Even the Volume 1 intro they hit at it, the foreshadowing that happens in this show.

Velvet was so awesome, but it seems her copies are one-off, and she has to reacquire them after use. I really doubt Penny is gone for good, but if she is, this means the verse at 1:11 accompanies the last time her weapon will ever be used. THOSE FEELS.

I really doubt Penny's down for good. Being a robot, even one with an anomalous soul, there's always the 'maybe' that she can be repaired, which is better odds than otherwise. And speaking from a storytelling standpoint, we never really learned her backstory or what the whole deal with her situation was, and the RoosterTeeth crew don't strike me as the type to leave a mystery like that hanging, especially with all the hinting they dropped after her 'death'.
So yeah, I'm sure we'll see her up and Combat Ready again, but the thought that "In the time of our final moments / Every dream dies" played behind one of her friends taking up her weapon and fighting like her one last time was too potent an image to leave unsaid.

I started watching RWBY during the lead up to season 2, and I May Fall was my favourite song. Thus, I can't ever associate it with Velvet since I listened to it so much before that scene even existed. It's the Team RWBY song for me, since iirc they don't have a specific song for the whole team.

I sincerely wish I could say that there's been anything in the last 4 volumes that's gotten me as emotional as the ending to volume 3. And I also wish that I felt there was a chance of whatever final ending the show gets being worthy of having this song come back.
Much like all anime, the main characters are a bit overshadowed by people with way cooler powers, like Velvet.

I don't know, with all of the stuff we found out about Ruby and her eyes, I find her powers a bit hard to overshadow.

It's not about how powerful it actually is, it's about the cool factor.

For some reason I always associate this song with Nora, I like to think that deep down Nora has really bad anxiety and is just as scared of Salem then everyone else but hides it under her bubbly personality similar to how Ren represses his emotions. I think that keeping positive is just her way of dealing with life to the bitter end. We see in Volume 8 that she is already willing to give up her body to help a loved one in need. Nora is a fighter, she has fought her whole life and staying strong throgh the battle is how she keeps herself sane in times of hardship. Idk, just my own headcanon.
