Therefore, some Indonesians who are fed up with these regulations choose to collect their cars outside Indonesia, for example in Malaysia or New Zealand. We are very happy if these rules can be changed, because if you want to know a fact in Indonesia there are more Evo or VR-4 converts compared to the original and now the price of Evo convert has reached $ 40,000, that is already expensive for us.
The Importing of Vehicles in Indonesia were completely banned since 22 January 1974 before it was "relaxed" since 1999 making the whole automotive industries must build their vehicles locally to market them in Indonesia. Also, you might notice that most Indonesians prefer to have Hatchbacks, MPVs, Minibuses, SUVs rather than Sedans because Sedans (no matter it's sizes) were taxed as Luxury goods before it was revised 2 years ago from car models based tax to engine capacity based tax. Is it true? I haven't caught up with the recent Indonesia's car tax model. Correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK, sedans still get luxury goods tax in sales. So it's gonna be more expensive to buy a new sedan rather than a new MVP or hatchback or something else.
this is probably the most honest and accurate review of Indonesian car culture. i love that "rich people" hobby part 😅, and then you noticed all the modified car parked outside the event, but eventually you choose Brio as your favorite, "cheap" car compare to cars inside the show. you appreciate the Brio owner for whatever he has done to his car.

Indonesia is hell for car enthusiasts, the actual car community feels inclusive to only the super rich, celebrities, and people with internal connections. The only budget friendly cars in indonesia for car enthusiasts are e30/e36 sedans, civic eg, honda brio

You nailed the summary of Indonesian car culture at the end there Larry. The people who can afford those cars either work in the government, celebrities, or successful businessmen. As an Indonesian working class, our only options are a small hatchback (Honda Jazz/Fit, Brio, Yaris, Suzuki Swift, etc) or 90s/00s Mercedes/BMW. All the cars you find on the street are 4 doors, you need to go to this high-level car show to see the coupe version of the car. When you told the story about smuggling cars it makes me realize that we live closer to Russian oligarch system than a free democratic country 😅

Talking about high taxes, it's actually not just applies to cars it also applies to motorcycle anything bigger than 250cc will get taxed heavily from 100% to 200% or even more. So a $7k motorcycle brand new will cost probably minimum $14k. That's why almost everyone here use motorcycle/scooter smaller than 250cc.
Ngl, when I was in Bali in February. What modified cars I did see were amazing. Supercars looked stupid cos they were too big for the roads but there were some well preserved older cars there. Jakarta looks off the hook
The show was cool and definitely the cars, but in my opinion the one that really embodies the Indonesian spirit of "just use what you have" is the custom car culture which is unfortunately a dying breed but still very worth a coverage or two
Taxes on imports here are just soo crazy that like you said a car might cost 20 grand in the US costs almost 5 times as much. We had to resort to do things in the grey area just to get them as economical as possible.
The situation is the same here in Vietnam. We can't import legally any vehicle which is more than 5 years old or LHD, even if it's already been imported the registration is very hard. Dealerships are also not imported any interesting cars like the M3, Miata or even GT86, lately we have Civic Type R FL5 but that's a $100.000+ brand new here, and yes modifications is mostly illegal. Therefore the fact that Indonesia's car culture quality looks this good is so fascinating. I do hope someday we will also have this craziness

Visit batam auto car show (indonesian island near SG) ,and you will see around 20 GTR and GTT and others cool cars.i've been there and it's sick ,small show but the showcase really nuts !.
Man it's basically the same in the Philippines regarding the import ban on used cars with a few exceptions (own the personal vehicle and lived in the country or something), plus they have to be converted to LHD since RHD is also prohibited to be driven.
Ah yes, port irene ban The only thing that can be imported now is trucks (and by that definition it includes multicab). IDK if buses are still allowed, I have seen Flickr photos of Japan surplus buses and its conversion process. Quality of LHD conversion ranges from factory grade (new steering rack and components, new dashboard, even reorient wipers) to hack job (usage of baki baki, chop and glue dashboard)
New gr86 or brz cost about 60k msrp, you could drive LHD and the last one registered in here are SRT Viper and F150 Shelby. You could drive them but it is a massive inconvenience to drive them here. Brand new usdm car such as the ram trx or the Bronco came already converted to rhd in Australia. The mindset for that kind of cars are it is already expensive anyway why not converted them to rhd so the car are easily useable in Indonesia.
New found respect for this countries car culture as they don't stop for nothing is massive respect to each individual builder 🥵🥶. So good it's hot and ice cold but the level of the customization is incredible ❤
Hks had those compound supercharger+turbocharge set ups back in the day for evo, for mr2, for gtr, and just about any car that came turbo or supercharge from the factory.

Indonesia charges a large tax for cars entering Indonesia. the Indonesian government has forgotten, if it gives a large tax, Indonesia should be able to produce its own car brands to provide choices to the Indonesian market. It might very well happen, but there are some "hands" playing behind the scenes that make an Indonesian-made car never happen

Can't deny the amount of work, craftsmanship & not to mention money for owning & building this car in indonesia is incomprehensible. I really appreciate it. We Indonesian's love cars, but sadly its not attainable for average person. Even police regulation as simple as changing exhaust get you jail time for "modifying beyond factory objectives" (rules don't applies if you are rich or powerful). Because of this, car culture in indonesia is all about who is got the most rarest, expensive, spec out, bling, or status. it's all about rich people snob tools. The saddest part is the average person only can watch & in some extend of most people here "Worship" this somewhat "car influencers" (For ex. hype around 2JZ, with that cringe tagline "no Sh1t", like wtf?). I understand this snobery phenomenon is not only happening in this country alone but you just can't deny it most of it, is.. when watching car content here (any media even car reviewers). If you think I talk nonsense, just compare indonesia car builds owners answer for Larry Chen's interviews vs US or Japan car build interviews. The most differentiation is there's no humbleness. I wish we have more garage builds for average joe can do like in US, more builds that not unnecessary about bling or hype like the brio you choose (to some degree)
Agree on your points about the arrogance and snobbery of some these car influencer or 'builder' , i personally despise those big creators like GD as their content is really just them flexing about expensive cars and the expensive mods that they have "done", i never saw either of the channel owners do any car work themselves, its always some wretched (probably underpaid) mechanics that does the work, which is a shame since i believe that being hands on towards your build is one of the major corner stones of a good car culture content creator such as car throttle for example

Not exactly sneering at them, but they probably don't really have the time and skills to do this by themselves which is understandable. It was done on the group b Lancia 037 rally car of the early 80's. Had a major sema build of a porsche GT4 and a Nissan 180SX Cause they look similar in wheelbase.
Idk if its just me, but I've much preferred the "lesser" Indonesian builds we've seen prior to this elite show. I feel like they were much nicer builds than these.
I love how you highlight that this hobby is for the rich. Indeed, I know a lot of guys here love cars, studied car culture, but can't even afford one. I love how you note that this is a rich people hobby, and the stories about how these people smuggled cars from the jungles and such. We Indonesians likes cars as any other nations, but we really have to make do on some parts, because the conditions and regulations here are just so different from out there. For 99% of layman Indonesians, even just owning the cheapest car is a dream so far out of reach, and that entire car show probably represents the top 0.0001% of what we have. It's like the top tier of rides, like comparing a scooter bike to a private yacht. So far out of the laymen's reach, but the fact that there are people passionate and rich enoug to bring those cars to life is what makes it double more impressive.

I love southeast asia car scene but its easy to see its mostly corrupt folks doing it . These countries have massive wealth gaps . And guess who gets to import/ build the cars . People affiliated with or are corrupt officials. Some of the most beautiful builds yes . that is impossible for most without exploitation .

Brazil, from what I've heard, used to ban car imports around 1974 to 1990, just like Indonesia. In Indonesia, the ban was lifted partially in 1992 with 200% tax, limited quotas, and no parallel importers. In 1999, parallel importers were allowed, this caused JDM car craze that continued until the 2010s. Models like Toyota IST, Wish, Probox, Isis, Honda fit, Elysion, etc.
you can get right hand drive bmw from factory.. THE UK, australia and JDM markets came with them and some asian markets so its highly possible that the right hand drive BMW's arent modified to right hand drive
yes, we here got a right-hand drive BMW, but we changed the BMW M3 E30 from left-hand drive to right-hand drive. For your information, here is no BMW M3 E30 with a legal vehicle certificate.
Here in Indonesia what you call a scooter we call it a Moped anything that has 115cc displacement gets called moped and that moped that cost 10k actually goes faster than 150km/h and all that cost is mostly on the forged carbon fiber those things are as expensive to whatever the most expensive dinner at 3 michellin stars restaurant

Nissan march super turbo is the same also. Its just not been done much in the Evo world ( Or many other aftermarket setups)

For 99% of layman Indonesians, even just owning the cheapest car is a dream so far out of reach, and that entire car show probably represents the top 0.0001% of what we have. It's like the top tier of rides, like comparing a scooter bike to a private yacht. So far out of the laymen's reach, but the fact that there are people passionate and rich enoug to bring those cars to life is what makes it double more impressive.

I love southeast asia car scene but its easy to see its mostly corrupt folks doing it . These countries have massive wealth gaps . And guess who gets to import/ build the cars . People affiliated with or are corrupt officials. Some of the most beautiful builds yes . that is impossible for most without exploitation .

Brazil, from what I've heard, used to ban car imports around 1974 to 1990, just like Indonesia.
In Indonesia, the ban was lifted partially in 1992 with 200% tax, limited quotas, and no parallel importers. In 1999, parallel importers were allowed, this caused JDM car craze that continued until the 2010s. Models like Toyota IST, Wish, Probox, Isis, Honda fit, Elysion, etc.

you can get right hand drive bmw from factory.. THE UK, australia and JDM markets came with them and some asian markets so its highly possible that the right hand drive BMW's arent modified to right hand drive
yes, we here got a right-hand drive BMW, but we changed the BMW M3 E30 from left-hand drive to right-hand drive. For your information, here is no BMW M3 E30 with a legal vehicle certificate.

Here in Indonesia what you call a scooter we call it a Moped anything that has 115cc displacement gets called moped and that moped that cost 10k actually goes faster than 150km/h and all that cost is mostly on the forged carbon fiber those things are as expensive to whatever the most expensive dinner at 3 michellin stars restaurant
