James - what do you reckon on coach houses? Ie a flat over garages. Can be some issues with the garages but a cheap way of buying a detached house. Some are freehold and even have a garden.
I'd speak with a mortgage broker to see what they feel. In recent times Ive had problems getting mortgages on flats above restaurants, especially in a downturn as they worry someone will do an insurance job on the restaurant.
If you tick STC it includes deals they have sold subject to contract. This means they are going through legals but 20% of those never complete so you can ask the agent if they will complete and get a good deal if there is problems.
