The applicator is knowledgeable in the application of this product, the surface finish and the condition of the whip hose tell me that. I have been spray foaming closed cell foam in northern Alberta Canada for just under 7 years and it is nice to see a well done job.
I am a big believer in closed cell spray foam for many applications. From my experience, the downside to applying spray foam directly to the backside of the exterior metal panel is the struggle this will cause if you ever need to replace that panel due to damage caused by storms, bikes or cars, or someone with an attitude kicking the siding. The struggle to replace the panel is even worse if the inside of the building has been finished off with metal liner panel or plywood because you can't get to the backside of that panel you are replacing to cut the spray foam at a joint to allow for its removal. During construction of your building, if you do plan to use spray foam, consider placing a house wrap before applying the metal. The foam will adhere to the wrap, not to the metal, allowing panels to someday be replaced if damaged.
Houston Bros are great guys with a great product. They sprayed my attic space after I took out all of the batting and blown insulation that was making us sick. I am building Metal building in Northern Arizona. My insulation company bid one with open cell. Do I need to use a vapor barrier here? We rarely have humidity higher than 15% except in the monsoon season (4 months) when we can get in the 70% range at the most and not everyday. We get freezing temps and snow up here from Jan - March, as well. I hope that is enough info to get a good idea of the proper way to insulate up here. The wind is so bad here that it is almost impossible to put on the insulation from the metal garage companies. TIA
My dad built a house can you spray foam? The people that bought it we're allergic to the foam gases, they had to tear out all the inside drywall and dig out the phone and replace with fiberglass insulation. Cost almost as much as the house. There's other video showing where if it's not put on proper the right temperatures are the benoliel shin isn't right? The guy had to tear his whole roof off and replace it. That was many years ago? Is that true? Planning on building a barndo here soon and would like to know the answer to that. Thanks! Nice video.

I'm buying a 30 by 30 foot building. The company charges about 5 grand for a mylar double stick insulation that has an R value 15. The building is in the desert so I imagine the reflective value of the foil may be better than foam. But it certainly won't stiffen the building. Should I use foam instead? Do you know what the R value of foam is? If I can afford it, can foam be sprayed over the foil insulation?
@@Drizimar1 The foam adds stiffness, which is a concern due to high winds in the area. But I assume the R value of the foam is less than 16. So since it's in the desert, which can reach temps of 120 in summer, should I go with foil instead of foam?

I had spray foam installed on a wood pole barn with steel sheathing. I've had excellent results (only the walls were sprayed). I didn't have the roof sprayed because I had the R10 rolled roof insulation under the steel and had a ceiling installed later which had blown fiberglass installed on top of. Immediate results beyond a better temperature was a "quiet building", no more shake, rattle, and roll with the wind. Of note: while the foam was a closed-cell foam, all foam insulation that was was exposed (i.e. not covered with a fire retardant material, drywall or other finish) required a fire-retardant spray/paint, in NC; my insulation applier took care of this without me requesting it. Houston Bros... here's a question"s. I am in the process of building a new "all steel" storage building. I've seen articles on thermal break foam panels between the steel sheathing and purlins with 1"-1` of fiberglass. Can foam be applied over the batts? Should I only go with the thermal break and foam? If I apply Foam on a roof, is there any disadvantage/concern about applying blown fiberglass in a ceiling later?
We recommend remove all fiber insulation and applying the spray foam directly to the metal. The fiberglass is not fully adhered and will fail over time. The fiber insulation also provides opportunity for moisture to be trapped between the insulation and the metal. Direct adhesion of the closed cell foam to the metal will yield the best performance results, lock out moisture, make the building stronger, and it will last the life of the building. I hope this helps!
Do you spray the center part of the roof where the 2 sheets meet my contractor had left a small opening there. With a seperate cap I'm assuming it was for ventilation. My spray foam guy covered that up it seems to trap all the heat inside now should I open it back up?
You made you points and did a nice job. Could you have smoothed the surface? Have you looked at using the foam for raising foundations? Good Luck, Rick
The foam can only get so smooth, it's just the nature of the product. We do actually do the concrete lifting as well. th-cam.com/video/LsZfbBrj83o/w-d-xo.html
Question is how much R value do you need? I live in NC and we some nights into the single digits. On these metal buildings if you get the insulation the seller offers you can only get 6 inches or R19. I am not sure that is enough in the roof, but unlike a pole barn you don't have the option to blow insulation in the attic. Seems like with this stuff you would have to put at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches to get the same r value.
It depends on what you mean by "need". There are code requirements for living spaces and commercial buildings. If your building isn't being lived in or subject to code then you can do whatever you like as far as thickness. R-value isn't as important as an air seal. Performance is vastly improved when you achieve an air seal. We have seen huge success with 1 1/2" -2" of closed cell foam. Clients report easily heating their spaces with with just 2" of closed cell in metal buildings.
What kind of temp difference is it in summer? I wanna store plastic baits and other fishing gear in my big metal building. And was considering this. I will not have an AC or anything
Spray foam is a fantastic insulation product, but it cannot generate heat or cool, it can only maintain the internal temperatures of the building more efficiently. Think of it like a drink cooler. You will still need to add ice to make it cool, but the ice will melt slowly because of the insulation. With that said, many clients have reported back to us that their non-air conditioned metal building felt significantly cooler after the installation in the summer. If maintaining a specific temperature is critical then you will still need to consider installing a climate control system of some kind.
Can I do spray insulation BEFORE I run the electrical? I would rather do it that way so if in the future I need to get to any wires, I don't have to cut any foam to get there?
@Dustin Eward regular fiberglass insulation around a wire is not the same as totally encapsulating it in foam. Just like the reason there are 3M standoffs for multiple wires running up a single stud, you can't nail them together for the same reason. It has nothing to do with wire size. I guess we all have a different level of quality and safety to give to our customers, I don't cut corners.
Since this appears to be an all-steel building, "rot" will not be an issue. Maybe, if there is concern about rot regarding a wood or pole-barn structure, special considerations should be given as to the weather integrity of the building shell....as one would with most all residential construction. True, there are no "perfect" one-size-fits-all solution for all types of construction; but, I think the benefits of this type of insulation as applied to all-steel buildings outweigh the potential cons or at least has the equivalent risk of traditional methods. For me, it comes down to cost. Upfront cost may seem high, until you figure what it will cost to keep a 35' x 75' warm enough to be used throughout the winters over the life of the building. The more use you get out of your building, the cheaper it is over time!
@@christophergruenwald5054 Well my 20x25x10ft wall build all in including a 10 ft lean too, concrete floor, and spray foam on walls and ceiling, 2 windows, 1 man door and 10 ft roll up door was $11,600. I've heard that it's a good idea to pressure wash or somehow clean the metal panels before applying closed cell foam to remove manufacturing oils which might cause closed cell foam to pull away from the metal over time. Is that true? Planning on building a barndo here soon and would like to know the answer to that. Thanks! Nice video.
Check out Spray Jones. He’s another good source of information all things foam.
Great info, thanks I am planning a building and needed this info.
Great to hear! If you need more information please check out our website: www.HoustonBrosFoam.com
I have a building that needs to be done right now. I live in Greenville S.C., let me know when you can swing by for my free estimate! Haha, just kiddin. Great video. Had a few buddies recommend this and now I’ve made my mind up. Godbless
So since it's in the desert, which can reach temps of 120 in summer, should I go with foil instead of foam?
how would this be in a van conversion to a camper/ thanks in advance
How much does it cost for a shed this size?
What is the spray foam made of , cellulose or poliuretane? Is it safe, In the sense that It doesn't liberate poissoneous gases?
What is the cost average for a 40X60 metal building roof only?
Projects can range in price from $1,000 to $10,000. Pricing can vary depending on a lot of factors like:
>Total square footage
>Type of corrugation
>Type of foam sprayed
>Thickness of the foam sprayed
>How far away the client is
>Will a lift be required
>How much preparation (plastic and masking) is required
>How many doors and windows
>Will the foam need to be cleaned off of the studs
It's not an easy answer. This is why we do free estimates so we can give you a custom price for your project. I hope this helps!
Do you have to vent a metal building once you do this? If so how?
What type of mini split or unit?
Do they have companies in northwest Florida?
Does it off gas much after it's cured? Will it off-gas in the heat of the summer when the sun is baking the building?
Ty's Videos It will completely stop off gassing between 24-48 hours. The typical cure time. After that period, it will never off gas again
i put some in the corners of my chicken house to seal the metal ribs behind the corner posts to keep snakes out ,,,, long story short chickens love it and ate it all ...chickens never got sick,, just saying dont use it around chickes.....have a great day!
It makes your house stronger too.
Closed cell foam can add as much a 400% racking strength to your walls! It's FEMA approved to stand up to high winds.
@@HoustonBrosSprayFoamFerrum sure does, thanks.
Is there future off-gassing that is toxic?
Do you spray the center part of the roof where the 2 sheets meet my contractor had left a small opening there. With a seperate cap I'm assuming it was for ventilation. My spray foam guy covered that up it seems to trap all the heat inside now should I open it back up?
Isn't off gassing a major issue in the summer?
No, off gassing only occurs during the first 24 hours. After that the foam is totally safe.
@@HoustonBrosSprayFoamFerrum That a relief! Not enough to worry about without 'off gassing'. It sound like me after a Mexican dinner!
That foam looked esp tough
It strengthens the building and helps it to resist wind damage.
after the foam sprayed can you add rockwool for better insulation?
Why? More closed cell would be better..
Typically the SPF is so effective that additional insulation is not needed.
i live in alabama....have a 40 x 60 12 feet high..........any idea of the cost...will not hold you to it...just a guess....thanks
The wire is supposed to be in conduit the first time a wire shorts the building will burn
It will trip the breaker

What is the cost for a 25×40 ?
Can I do spray insulation BEFORE I run the electrical? I would rather do it that way so if in the future I need to get to any wires, I don't have to cut any foam to get there?
Yes, by electrical code, you can run all of your wiring on the inside of the building using conduit.
Yeah, that power cable you are spraying over is suppose to be in conduit!
It's Romex. Perfectly fine.
Actually it's not ok because it can not dissipate the heat generated from the load. This would not pass a proper inspection. @@elbob248
I guess I was wrong.@@scottsibbick566
@Dustin Eward regular fiberglass insulation around a wire is not the same as totally encapsulating it in foam. Just like the reason there are 3M standoffs for multiple wires running up a single stud, you can't nail them together for the same reason. It has nothing to do with wire size. I guess we all have a different level of quality and safety to give to our customers, I don't cut corners.
go rip 30 2x's on a table saw and feel the cord and tell me a load doesn't generate heat.... @Dustin Eward
Any recommendations for a company in San Antonio Texas area?
Hi! How much do you charge for a 2000SF steel building insulation?
Due to the complex nature of any spray foam project an on-site estimate would be required in order to evaluate the cost of installation.
What's the R value when your done?
The more use you get out of your building, the cheaper it is over time!
yes senior ~ that is a lot of work , not for a loafer
So the building cost $9,500??..........Did the insulation cost more to install then the cost of the building?
Roger Evans the cost for what??
Jay Beesmer no. It’s a small building and a small lift of foam. Maybe $3000-$5000, I don’t know the dimensions.
@@christophergruenwald5054 Well my 20x25x10ft wall build all in including a 10 ft lean too, concrete floor, and spray foam on walls and ceiling, 2 windows, 1 man door and 10 ft roll up door was $11,600. Other than the roll up door which doesn't seal well at the top this is a building you could live in. Of course it would cost more for plumbing and interior walls, but its a damn fine building for 12K

The 20x25 building with 10 ft walls and 8ft lean too, 10 ft roll up door, two windows and one man door was about 6500-6800 maybe. I had a concrete slab poured ahead of time that cost me 1800, and the insulation was somewhere between 2200 and 1800, I just can't remember. I will try to post a video of it when I'm down there over christmas and that way you can see it.
The lean too was a bit of a deal, when ordering I though ghe diminsion was height, but actually it was width, so some field mods had to be done, that is the difference in dim I gave.
