Sisu is a unique Finnish concept. It is a Finnish term that can be roughly translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Sisu is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage. It is a word that cannot be fully translated.

I think one thing that makes sisu so hard to define is that it exhibits itself in so many ways. Here is an example that is personal to me. I'll start off by saying my parents were born in the US to Finnish immigrants. The one thing my mom wanted was to have children. However, she had problems sustaining a pregnancy. Over the course of several years, she had 9 late-term miscarriages, the last two of which which resulted in baby girls born alive, but who only survived for hours afterwards. On the 1Oth try, I was born. (Due to the efforts of a Dr. who finally figured out what was going wrong.) People had told her over and over that she should stop trying, but she was not going to give up until forced to.

On the other hand, sometimes it's just bull-headed stubbornness.

As a Finn and a former Sissi in the FDF, like the main character, I'm looking at this purely from entertainment perspective even when the tank and Dushka are from 1950s (and ... Soviet to boot. lol). That was the first thing I reacted to as "come on!" ;) The point is really (and yes, over the top way) that 'sisu' means you don't give up ... ever -- even when it is flat-out stupid not to. That's just what you get in the mom's milk here. The most fear inducing person in my childhood was my grandma and not so much my WWII maternal grandpa who was also a Sissi and served in the Lappish War 1945, because Winter War 1939-40 and Continuous War 1941-44 weren't just enough for one man to go through... Anyway, love the movie, love the message, and to hell with all the inaccuracies and over-the-top stuff. SISUA, PERKELE!!!! HAKKAA PAALLE!!!

He talked about the water scene also, and did say that there definitely is enough oxygen on the exhaled breathe to be able to breath from, as long as you can get that air into your lungs. Even if it's mixed with some water, as long as you have the discipline to breathe it in, and back out, you'll oxygenate your blood enough to buy some more time.

The movie's director, Jalmari Helander, said the 1982 film First Blood and the real-life Finnish military sniper Simo Häyhä, who fought against the Red Army, served as inspirations for the film.
Simo Häyhä often referred to by his nickname, The White Death, was a Finnish military sniper in World War II during the 1939-1940 Winter War against the Soviet Union. He used a Finnish-produced M/28-30 (a variant of the Mosin-Nagant rifle) and a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun. He is believed to have killed over 500 enemy soldiers during the Winter War (averaging 5 kills per day), the highest number of sniper kills in any major war. On 21 December 1939, Häyhä achieved his highest daily count of 25 kills. Because of this, he is often regarded as the deadliest sniper of all time.

Sh*t just happens, ok? You have to imagine this as a myth based on real events. And we all know the best myths are embellished a bit.... it was probably a lake, not a marsh, there probably was a parachute which malfunctioned, he probaly had to swim out? But would the cashier at the bank know that level of detail? No... And THUS, a myth is born 😈

Those matches were common at least into the 90’s. I lit them with my thumbnail all the time. You could actually throw them hard against concrete and they would ignite. I guy had some in his pants pocket and was struck by a baseball and they ignited.

I liked the movie personally. Yeah, alot of that stuff was definitely like WTF??! But the message being sent is, given the proper motivation😜 mind, body, and will, produce an indomitable spirit. At least that's my take away. That and when I get to his age, I still wanna be an underestimated badass🤠😎👊🏾👍🏾😉

Who is the one greatest soldiers of greenberets? Only waffen ss man who is burried in Arlington military cemetery? That guy is Larry Thorne aka Lauri Törni, soldier of three armies. And that guy is real life badass from Finland.

He was among the first group of Green Beret's when they formed at 10th. And of that group, among the most Legendary.
The 10th SFG HQ at Fort Carson is named after him. The guy had Neutronium balls. Nobody fk'd with Larry.

Sisu is not fully translatable. It's easier to understand if you are in the finnish mindset. It's the reason why Finland used to win over Sweden in hockey even though they were far below in skills. Truly hard people in every respect.

the throat cutting thing could have worked if he's cutting through the trachea too tho: bc typically the ''bubbles" you see is CO2 when they're exhaling under water: "When you breathe, air enters your mouth and moves into the pharynx. The air then goes down into your main airway (trachea) and into your lungs. A flap of tissue called the epiglottis sits over the top of the trachea."

    • @andrabook8758
      @andrabook8758 ปีที่แล้ว

in mouth to mouth, it's a little different bc you're doing it super fast. you're not really exhaling from the lungs, you're mainly using throat pressure. and mouth/throat oxygen.

Sisu is your inner strength when you are doomed and have nothing to lose, it gives you almost supernatural powers against all odds to survive what seems impossible. You are not giving up no matter what. That is sisu. 💪🏻🇫🇮
p.s. You can activate sisu mode by shouting out loud Perkele! 💀

everything about this movie was amazing and yes the airplane crash was silly but it so was john wick falling off a building and smashing into fire escapes on the way down and walks away...it is what it is.

    • @XtreeM_FaiL

The crash was not silly compared to "Captain America" and his gold pan shield.

Awesome commentary on a brutal but righteously violent film! If you appreciate this type of quiet, pipe hitting Scandinavian badass, check out a movie called The Salvation. It's a classic "pay back" western starring a Danish dude named Mads Mikkelsen.

One concept is that he died a long time ago, but does not know it, he just keeps going trought the motions, so the nazis are fighting a material ghost that does what he would do, except that it works due to... you know, being immortal. This could "explain" the anti-aircraft plot armor, as Sisu just does what he would do to protect himself and only get the injuries he believes he would get, until he forgets about them.
Of course, its just a fun over the top movie, but I do like the supernatural angle for the lolz.
