Rebel Ridge was one of the best Batman movies I ever saw. THAT was the Batman I want to see. Smart, calculated, planning, stealthy, and most importantly doesn't KILL. Did you notice that in the entire movie only ONE person dies, off-screen, and he's a plot device!
I'm a retired Army Officer who spent 11 years in the Corps as well and went through the MCMAP program. Military movies are usually so bad that I can't even watch them. But this was a refreshing movie to watch. I was convinced that the lead actor was a prior Marine...then I found out he's British. If that doesn't scream "NAILED IT!" nothing does.
I didn't know he was British and I was curious if American audiences realised it and clearly if you didn't spot it, he handled the accent accurately enough. He's a really good actor and I'd love to see him in more action films - but he can clearly handle any role they throw at him.

I love almost all war movies but I do understand what the military guys are talking about the unrealistic representation.
Netflix always hypes the wrong movies, this is probably the best Netflix movie and should've been in theaters. As a civie, I really believed this guy was in the military, he really exuded the confidence and personality of my miltary friends. Glad to see your breakdown confirms that. And I'm definitely using PACE is my life from here on out, lol.

I asked the director a little bit about this on twitter and this was his response: "Aaron sprinted through training before and during the shoot. The amazing stunt team + military advisors translated the detailed fight sequences I wrote into something that passed the 'legit' test. MCMAP is a mix of disciplines, so we used Jiu jitsu, wrestling, whatever worked." The first part about Aaron sprinting through training is important because behind-the-scenes John Boyega was originally cast, and begun filming, as Terry before he left the project for a family emergency. Aaron was brought in and probably had very little time to learn all this, but he did it spectacularly. A lot of Jeremy's films have this sort of realism to them, which I think adds to the tension, but this is one of the few times he actually has an expert as a main character. So while I don't have names of the military advisors, Jeremy's commitment to keeping things grounded definitely helps with why they got it so right. Favorite film by far from him, but obviously love Green Room and Blue Ruin. However, there is one particular scene in Hold The Dark that you might be interested in looking at.
The reason I enjoyed this whole so much is because it was his INTELLIGENCE that won the day. Sure, you can be a physical specimen and a master fighter. But intelligence is really important for a tactician, and that's what was on display here the entire time.
I saw this movie advertised and everything for a while but purposely ignored it. Didn’t even know what it would be about. Someday I just happened to have nothing else to watch and decided why not. To my surprise it turned out to be one of the best and most realistic movies I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen thousands and thousands
I thought this was a fantastic movie. What I appreciated about the main character was that he went out of his way to injure and not kill people. He was always calm and respectful.

Yo John Boyega was originally cast to play this role and walked off set and quit the film. This was the best thing to happen to this movie. Really good movie.

He had also complained about his room not being up to his standards and had complained about the script. So whilst the public statement may be that he had a family emergency, doesn't mean it's true.
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well Rambo was the best. Winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor, survivor of countless incursions behind enemy lines.

I think this movie has a good tactical adviser. The cops uniforms, the way they carry their equipment, the use of police codes, vehicle, tactic are on point 👍👍
I’m stationed at the city where the movie was filmed. John Boyega (escaped storm trooper who became a main character from new Star Wars trilogy) was originally cast. I couldn’t see him casted in this role I walked on the set unknowingly. Got some food from the food truck and tried to pay. Dude was like, “the food is free on set.” That’s when I saw some of the actors in 2021 when they first started filming the movie. It’s right next to Fort Johnson (aka POLK).
Jariko Denman was listed as the military advisor. From imdb: "Jariko was born in Washington DC and as a military brat grew up all over the world. In 1997 he enlisted in the US Army. After basic training and Airborne School he completed the assessment and selection process for the 75th Ranger Regiment and was assigned to the 2nd Ranger Battalion at Ft Lewis Washington. Nope! It's impossible in the United States Army to deploy 15 times to Iraq and Afghanistan from 2002 though 2012. Sorry the math don't add up and I would have to see all 15 deployments orders for me to ever believe he deployed that many times. How do I know that? Because I deployed to Iraq in 2003 which was a year deployment. Moving onwards doing back to back deployments I deployed to Iraq another 3 times making it a total of 4 back to back deployments and my third deployment was during the Iraqi Surge which became 15 month deployment during 2006 till 2007. My 4th deployment in Iraq ended in 2010. Guess what? My next deployment being my 5th deployment was to Afghanistan in 2011 till 2012. I came back from my 5th deployment injured and broken with the doctors telling me after my medical examine that they were amaze that I even lasted that long from the long term physical damage I was doing to myself doing that many deployments plus in-between training for those deployments. My military career was over in 2014. 15 times my ass I say!
Smoke can be used for concealment and as a carrier for CS or OC. It multiplies the effect of the chemical agent. I was a Chemical Agent instructor for my agency.

Loved Rebel Ridge. I had the same reaction when I saw the proper car follow in the dark. The acting was terrific. Don Johnson ("Maiami Vice") has matured into a really good actor.
Got a chance to see this movie. Pre screening . I was able to actually give insite when they asked from a personal stand point . When your military we tend to scrutinize alittle deeper than what’s seen on surface including jargon used and execution of tactics . Semper fi!
I made sure to watch this movie before watching your video. And really enjoyed it, especially when he was explaining the pace acronym. I was planning to watch this movie for a bit and this made me get to it a little earlier. As always a fun and interesting watch. Looking FWD to the next one
God this movie was krazy no kiling str8 hands this was on a different level. The internet was down about time he oped that door my dude broke him down i replayed that part twice and instantly thought of JJK. THAT marine went into demon mode❤❤❤❤❤
Also thought this was a pretty dope movie tactically, following with no headlights and taped break lights. Overall pretty smart decision including not killing anyone, it'd be pretty hard to plead his case with a trail of bodies.

Way better movie than I thought it would be. It was cool how the emphasis was made that he never deployed, but it was funny that the character was on the Marine Corps website when research was done on the character.
We had a TINY Fella about 5'7" 145... SFC Spreen Sandhill, Ft. Benning. Before he was our instructor he was one of the top guys for the Marine hand-to-hand... One day during training 2 soldiers both above 6ft both above 230lbs get serious and start really going at it. They other 2 instructors moved to intervene and he just waved them off and yelled "BREAK IT UP" Then he said "ONE MORE TIME... BREAK IT UP!" Then like some mongoose slid in between and hit both with elbows in the chest to seperate them, then immediately hit the smaller large fella with an uki goshi, and the larger a seoi nage. ALL 30-35 of us audibly gapsed, it sounded like. That moment showed Me how proper skill and techniques can level a lot of planning fields.
I’ve watched this movie multiple times already. This guy is a badass. This movie sort of reminded me of Rambo. Aaron Pierre was fantastic in this film. Everyone was fantastic in this film. He has also been cast as Green Lantern John Stewart(another Marine ironically although he didn’t start out that way).
I have tried watching this movie twice and have not been able to do so. Civil Asset Forfeiture is so prevalent, especially in smaller police departments where it seems to be used to supplement their budgets. It is not used as it should, and has become legal theft. I was pulled over for speeding 6 years ago in Long Beach, CA, (NOT a small city) and literally, the police officer ask me how much cash I had on me. When I asked "why", he said he was trying to figure out if I was doing something illegal. NO CRIME HAS TO BE COMMITTED for them to seize your stuff! By the way, I did not get a ticket, so . . . The police can claim they suspected you were going to use and asset to commit a crime, or that it is the result of a crime, and take it from you . . . it is not only cash; they can take your jewelry, cars, boats, houses and anything else they want . . . good luck getting it back!
Maybe this movie will help get this issue on the radar of people who who haven't already heard about it. It's amazing it's still being abused despite the fact it's been so widely reported on and at least some states and other smaller jurisdictions have made efforts to combat it. This seems like one of those things that should be above partisan politics that can get people across the board to unite on.
It took me three times to make it all the way through. Just boring, leaning toward too stupid to keep my interest. The end was ok, but not worth the price of lifetime spent watching.

I remember a police involved shooting at a Starbucks in Portland. 4 cops shot at a suspect inside the Starbucks from outside. There was busted glass over the doorway and holes in the ceiling from maybe 8 yards.

This was a good movie. I was actually surprised I liked it. I usually pick apart “military” movies and my wife hates watching them with me because of it. I kind of like this movie, I deployed 6 times, but have absolutely NO H2H skills, I am lucky if I can fight my way out of a paper bag, so I was like, could that all that H2H tactics be done for real ?? For most of us, MCMAP is just something to do for promotions. There's some that take it seriously. It works pretty well if you train the sparring part, too. Otherwise you might as well be one of those 12 y/o black belts cause you'd fair about as well in an actual fight.
@@sgtslaughter54I left the Corps as a green belt and my instructors were legit. MCMAP doesn’t really get serious as a martial art until you hit the higher levels - brown and black belt. It’s a legit combat martial art.

Marine Corps “Expert”Rifle marksman badge isn’t something that’s just given. From high to low…the USMC gives badges for the Rifle and Pistol from Expert, Sharpshooter, and Marksman…it takes more than just hitting the target to obtain Expert…you have to hit a certain amount of points to get it.
I thought it’s a pretty good flick. I thought the last scene was far too Hollywood. Group of cops using live rounds and he’s throwing rifles at them… just silly.
The new Anti-Gun propaganda is strong with Hollywood They’ll have these protagonists using everything under the sun except a firearm They want Americans dumb & defenseless & sadly, know that they can aid the programming through entertainment I understand he’s fighting police so, it can be argued here for plot purposes but it’s blatant everywhere
Frankly I like it more that way. It felt more grounded somehow. Like "Why am I rooting for the guy that kills people like fudder until he gets to the main boss?" The fact he uses stealth and low visibility to end a fight was scratching at just the right place. I love it when they use strategy. Like I legit groan at guns in fantasy because they take out most of the fun. I am sure you can have good strategy with a gun. But the Gore usually blinds me to it. Like for example suppressors in movie. They don't shoot that silently? The only time I actually thought a gun scene was cool. Was because of short animation on the premise that the sniper was the only one left. And even then I was more impressed by the fluidity.
23:12 I think there was also a point made about them having a bit more of a gun locker than a usual small town dept. Possibly to do with making deals with the cartel? Can't recall exactly, but it's something nefarious as to why they have so much lethal and non lethal armory.

Also marines qualify at 500yds as standard. So getting expert in the marine corp isnt always a guarantee, but getting 2nd 3rd or 4th qualification for expert says you understand the fundamentals to make windcalls at distance efficiently.

My department used the six shooter for smoke and CS gas. My department was also the largest in my state but we did not have the less than lethal weaponry that smaller departments had. And to that point there is a scene where Terry discovers that this small town department had an arsenal in the evidence locker

Have a look for Strike Back, it’,s a UK series with a premise of MI6 and outcast SAS and CIA mixed teams. There were a few series some got a bit far fetched but the ops running and drills looked sick.
Retired Marine here. I loved this movie. I like the fact that the main character was more brains than brawn and went out of his way to avoid killing people. By the way, although it’s been a minute since I retired, you could be kicked out of the Marine Corps for multiple rifle range failures. We don’t have non-combatants.
i’ve watched the movie twice and can honestly say i enjoyed it both times. it was refreshing take on an action movie. don’t get me wrong i like explosions and shoot outs and over the top fights scenes. but this movie was very entertaining and done well
Very intelligent and deliberate action film that's an evolution path of the genre. I also really liked the intro scene when the main character was pulled over. The dialogue wasn't "movie"-ish and very realistic. The movie also doesn't try to go for obvious stereotypes. Refreshing watch
I think Tyler Grey said it best on one of your shows about how Hollywood has to make things "realistic" for the audience in the theatre, as opposed to reality based realism. Interesting side bar - when I was posted in Calgary, they were filming the battle scenes from "Legends of the Fall" out in the foothills outside of town. The local reserve infantry unit had put together a rifle section of dudes that were literally. using the tactics out of the Canadian Army Infantry manual for the period...the director saw them putting in attacks and said "That looks completely unrealistic and nobody will believe it, so we're going with it my way 9or words to that effect)"...despite it being as realistic as it gets because that's literally what they actually did. Don't get me going about Owen Williams running through a minefield of PROM1's daisy chained together in "Behind Enemy Lines"...can't/won't watch that film to this day out of spite because of seeing the results of what those fucking things do to people and at what range they're capable of doing it on my first overseas deployment. BTW, bought "Better Off Broken", thoroughly enjoyed it 👍👍. SK

As one of those infantry Marines that pulled a couple of deployments it was great having a movie with the main character wasn't SOF. Even if they had made him just your run of the mill Marines I think it would have been good. Hell most of those MCMAP instructors come from different backgrounds.

He had also complained about his room not being up to his standards and had complained about the script. So whilst the public statement may be that he had a family emergency, doesn't mean it's true.

I’m stationed at the city where the movie was filmed. John Boyega (escaped storm trooper who became a main character from new Star Wars trilogy) was originally cast. I couldn’t see him casted in this role
I walked on the set unknowingly. Got some food from the food truck and tried to pay. Dude was like, “the food is free on set.” That’s when I saw some of the actors in 2021 when they first started filming the movie. It’s right next to Fort Johnson (aka POLK).

As well as Rebel Ridge, he's listed as involved in Encounter, Project Power, The Outpost, Mile 22, and The Long Road home. I believe you guys have done a show on The Outpost? Apart from that one I've only seen Mile 22, which is pretty over the top, but hey it's Marky Mark.

Nope! It's impossible in the United States Army to deploy 15 times to Iraq and Afghanistan from 2002 though 2012. Sorry the math don't add up and I would have to see all 15 deployments orders for me to ever believe he deployed that many times.
How do I know that? Because I deployed to Iraq in 2003 which was a year deployment. Moving onwards doing back to back deployments I deployed to Iraq another 3 times making it a total of 4 back to back deployments and my third deployment was during the Iraqi Surge which became 15 month deployment during 2006 till 2007.
My 4th deployment in Iraq ended in 2010. Guess what? My next deployment being my 5th deployment was to Afghanistan in 2011 till 2012. I came back from my 5th deployment injured and broken with the doctors telling me after my medical examine that they were amaze that I even lasted that long from the long term physical damage I was doing to myself doing that many deployments plus in-between training for those deployments. My military career was over in 2014. 15 times my ass I say!
Smoke can be used for concealment and as a carrier for CS or OC. It multiplies the effect of the chemical agent. I was a Chemical Agent instructor for my agency.

Got a chance to see this movie. Pre screening . I was able to actually give insite when they asked from a personal stand point . When your military we tend to scrutinize alittle deeper than what’s seen on surface including jargon used and execution of tactics . Semper fi!

God this movie was krazy no kiling str8 hands this was on a different level. The internet was down about time he oped that door my dude broke him down i replayed that part twice and instantly thought of JJK. THAT marine went into demon mode❤❤❤❤❤
Also thought this was a pretty dope movie tactically, following with no headlights and taped break lights. Overall pretty smart decision including not killing anyone, it'd be pretty hard to plead his case with a trail of bodies.

Way better movie than I thought it would be. It was cool how the emphasis was made that he never deployed, but it was funny that the character was on the Marine Corps website when research was done on the character.

We had a TINY Fella about 5'7" 145... SFC Spreen Sandhill, Ft. Benning. Before he was our instructor he was one of the top guys for the Marine hand-to-hand... One day during training 2 soldiers both above 6ft both above 230lbs get serious and start really going at it. They other 2 instructors moved to intervene and he just waved them off and yelled "BREAK IT UP" Then he said "ONE MORE TIME... BREAK IT UP!" Then like some mongoose slid in between and hit both with elbows in the chest to seperate them, then immediately hit the smaller large fella with an uki goshi, and the larger a seoi nage. ALL 30-35 of us audibly gapsed, it sounded like. That moment showed Me how proper skill and techniques can level a lot of planning fields.

I’ve watched this movie multiple times already. This guy is a badass. This movie sort of reminded me of Rambo. Aaron Pierre was fantastic in this film. Everyone was fantastic in this film. He has also been cast as Green Lantern John Stewart(another Marine ironically although he didn’t start out that way).

I have tried watching this movie twice and have not been able to do so. Civil Asset Forfeiture is so prevalent, especially in smaller police departments where it seems to be used to supplement their budgets. It is not used as it should, and has become legal theft. I was pulled over for speeding 6 years ago in Long Beach, CA, (NOT a small city) and literally, the police officer ask me how much cash I had on me. When I asked "why", he said he was trying to figure out if I was doing something illegal. NO CRIME HAS TO BE COMMITTED for them to seize your stuff! By the way, I did not get a ticket, so . . .
The police can claim they suspected you were going to use and asset to commit a crime, or that it is the result of a crime, and take it from you . . . it is not only cash; they can take your jewelry, cars, boats, houses and anything else they want . . . good luck getting it back!
Maybe this movie will help get this issue on the radar of people who who haven't already heard about it. It's amazing it's still being abused despite the fact it's been so widely reported on and at least some states and other smaller jurisdictions have made efforts to combat it. This seems like one of those things that should be above partisan politics that can get people across the board to unite on.
It took me three times to make it all the way through. Just boring, leaning toward too stupid to keep my interest. The end was ok, but not worth the price of lifetime spent watching.
Just one more aspect of how profoundly corrupt our officials are in 2024. Dirty up and down the hierarchy.

For most of us, MCMAP is just something to do for promotions. There's some that take it seriously. It works pretty well if you train the sparring part, too. Otherwise you might as well be one of those 12 y/o black belts cause you'd fair about as well in an actual fight.
@@sgtslaughter54I left the Corps as a green belt and my instructors were legit. MCMAP doesn’t really get serious as a martial art until you hit the higher levels - brown and black belt. It’s a legit combat martial art.

Marine Corps “Expert”Rifle marksman badge isn’t something that’s just given. From high to low…the USMC gives badges for the Rifle and Pistol from Expert, Sharpshooter, and Marksman…it takes more than just hitting the target to obtain Expert…you have to hit a certain amount of points to get it.
I thought it’s a pretty good flick. I thought the last scene was far too Hollywood. Group of cops using live rounds and he’s throwing rifles at them… just silly.

Frankly I like it more that way. It felt more grounded somehow. Like "Why am I rooting for the guy that kills people like fudder until he gets to the main boss?" The fact he uses stealth and low visibility to end a fight was scratching at just the right place. I love it when they use strategy. Like I legit groan at guns in fantasy because they take out most of the fun.
I am sure you can have good strategy with a gun. But the Gore usually blinds me to it. Like for example suppressors in movie. They don't shoot that silently? The only time I actually thought a gun scene was cool. Was because of short animation on the premise that the sniper was the only one left. And even then I was more impressed by the fluidity.

23:12 I think there was also a point made about them having a bit more of a gun locker than a usual small town dept. Possibly to do with making deals with the cartel? Can't recall exactly, but it's something nefarious as to why they have so much lethal and non lethal armory.

Also marines qualify at 500yds as standard. So getting expert in the marine corp isnt always a guarantee, but getting 2nd 3rd or 4th qualification for expert says you understand the fundamentals to make windcalls at distance efficiently.
Yeah, I was in 4 years, 3x expert, 1x marksman.. but in my defense I had half a lung filled with fluid when I got the marksman :D

My department used the six shooter for smoke and CS gas. My department was also the largest in my state but we did not have the less than lethal weaponry that smaller departments had. And to that point there is a scene where Terry discovers that this small town department had an arsenal in the evidence locker

Have a look for Strike Back, it’,s a UK series with a premise of MI6 and outcast SAS and CIA mixed teams. There were a few series some got a bit far fetched but the ops running and drills looked sick.
Not mentioned was the taped out tail lights, and how to kill moon reflection, throw dirt on car, even easier in the desert, good movie.

Retired Marine here. I loved this movie. I like the fact that the main character was more brains than brawn and went out of his way to avoid killing people.
By the way, although it’s been a minute since I retired, you could be kicked out of the Marine Corps for multiple rifle range failures. We don’t have non-combatants.

Very intelligent and deliberate action film that's an evolution path of the genre. I also really liked the intro scene when the main character was pulled over. The dialogue wasn't "movie"-ish and very realistic. The movie also doesn't try to go for obvious stereotypes. Refreshing watch
I think Tyler Grey said it best on one of your shows about how Hollywood has to make things "realistic" for the audience in the theatre, as opposed to reality based realism. Interesting side bar - when I was posted in Calgary, they were filming the battle scenes from "Legends of the Fall" out in the foothills outside of town. The local reserve infantry unit had put together a rifle section of dudes that were literally. using the tactics out of the Canadian Army Infantry manual for the period...the director saw them putting in attacks and said "That looks completely unrealistic and nobody will believe it, so we're going with it my way 9or words to that effect)"...despite it being as realistic as it gets because that's literally what they actually did. Don't get me going about Owen Williams running through a minefield of PROM1's daisy chained together in "Behind Enemy Lines"...can't/won't watch that film to this day out of spite because of seeing the results of what those fucking things do to people and at what range they're capable of doing it on my first overseas deployment.

As one of those infantry Marines that pulled a couple of deployments it was great having a movie with the main character wasn't SOF. Even if they had made him just your run of the mill Marines I think it would have been good. Hell most of those MCMAP instructors come from different backgrounds.
