    Changing a head gasket is straightforward if you have the patience, time, tools. But before you change a head gasket, once you get the head off, you are better off having the block and head inspected thoroughly for warping or cracks. Because you are still throwing the dice if you just replace a head gasket without first knowing the root cause and resolving that first.

    I head a small head gasket leak in my 03 jeep liberty. I used Blue Devil Head Gasket sealer. It work fine for a few thousand miles then i started noticing coolant under my oil filler cap again. A week later my water pump more or less exploded on me. The bearing came completely apart and i lost all my coolant. I'm thinking the Blue Devil gummed up the water pump pretty good.. Now I'll tear it down and replace it the correct way.. Learned my lesson

    Just had the bottom of my radiator blow out, had new radiator installed and then found out that it was all due to an air bubble from a blown head gasket. It would cost me over 2k to have it repaired - including having the head machined. Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money. So, I am thinking about using one of these products, because right now I am driving around with my radiator cap barely on, adding water as needed, and praying to God that the pressure doesn't build up again and that my engine doesn't seize up. I can monitor the gauge and pull over if it starts to overheat, but no real way of telling what other damaging is taking place. The gasket may only be 20 bucks, but it's everything else involved that cost a pretty penny. Especially when you have to take it to an auto shop to have it done, and also a machine shop. The product that I was looking at - Blue Devil, requires you to run your engine for an hour after adding it, while maintaining proper temperature. I'm afraid to use it because of this. I'm not convinced that I will be able to run it that long without it overheating. But, since my other option is junking my vehicle, it might be worth the risk.

    After getting a quote for replacing a head gasket on a foreign car, you get desperate because it is so expensive. The only cheap fix that ever worked for me was when I had a very old BMW 4 cylinder. On a cold engine, and after lowering the coolant level a quart or so, I backed off all of the head bolts about half a turn or so, then tightened them in the correct order with a torque wrench to factory specs. As I remember, there were a lot of bolts involved, and the instructions were to tighten them up in three passes to slowly and evenly bring the head bolts up to the proper torque.(This was before torque-to-yield head bolts were in common use.) I did this, then added some Stop Leak for good measure and filled it back up with coolant. The engine ran fine for three more months during a really hot Southern summer before it started leaking again. I then sold it “as-is” with full disclosure of the leaking problem and never had to replace the head gasket on my dime.

    Some of that stop leak stuff reacts with some types of anti freeze and turns to goo. It also can block up small passages in the intake gaskets that we see in modern engines with aluminum heads. and if you just keep adding water in that engine I see that you are repairing you will get air in the system and it will begin to cavitate. When this happens it will create pitting in the gasket sealing surfaces of the head and/or block deck and worse in some other engines. Cavitation actually removes material from your head or block and makes it difficult to just go in and fix the head gasket. Now youre looking at heads and deck being warped and cavitated and all that goo that needs to be cleaned out of the engine, the heads, the heater core, the water pump, the radiator and all the hoses. This could easily result in having to pay to have the entire engine removed and sent to the machine shop, a new radiator and heater core and water pump installed. These are not yester years cast iron engines that seamed to be bullet proof. These new engine designs are very sensitive to everything. Think about how that copper crap is going to effect your sensors..
    My advice is go ahead and do it them come pay me to fix the mess you made. It will probably cost you more than the car is worth to fix the mess you made. Honestly this stuff should come with a warning label that says "WARNING this stuff can cause perminate damage to your engine and your wallet." Some cars it will work on and some it will destroy. Most of the new engines it will destroy. Some of the older cars the engine will seal up but then so does the heater core. Just get it fixed the right way its WAYYYYYYY cheaper. P.S. if your engine uses dexcool and you get air in the system the dexcool will turn to sludge.

    Bars is by far the best in the safest out theredon't tell folks a bunch of lies so they have to spend an arm and a leg on another vehicle engine which is about the same cost of putting a gasket in a machine time to make sure that there's nothing warped which can cost over $3000+ dollars

    GOOD job on the vidio and explaining things for people..... I AM SUSPECT that a recent visit to a dealership (Toyota) the have ADDED a liquid sealant to do a quick fix on a blown head gskt. within 2500 km... I have gone through almost 5 lts of oil in my 2012 4.0 tacoma. WHEN QUESTIONED (the dealership) what they did.... "we can't remember" But the records shop a list of parts .... (ie head gaskets/other) but were they installed.... I may have a battle to prove that the work was not done IF THIS IS THE CASE... NO LEAKS... the engine has to be burning it... I CAN DO THE WORK.... BUT THIS powertrain is still But this is still under waranty..... I am suspect that they may have ONLY PUT in a sealant ... retouqued heads hoping that this would seall the leak..... I have a dried crystal-like residue on the outside rad fill spout... I will have the coolant tested for what I think is sodium silica.... and other... comparing it to clean/new toyota coolant.... Any feed back will be appreciated Bern

      @jamiejonesthecarman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kyle Warner Hey Kyle, the fluid only has 4 places that it can go. 1.) The ground, 2.) IF there is air in your system, it could be causing the vehicle to boil out fluid while you're driving down the road through your expansion tank, 3.) Losing it through your exhaust ie: a crack in the head gasket or 4.) Head gasket as well, could have failed and allowed coolant into your oil. You can check this very easily by checking your oil. Your fluid would either show up way above the max fill on the dipstick or the oil would have a milky looking appearance to it.

  • @daby8399

    How do stop-leak products work? When installed in a cooling system, the stop leak product rushes through the cooling system under pressure to the site of the leak. When it exits the point of the leak, it builds up on itself, thus sealing up the leak. The problem? It only seals for a short time until either another leak springs or the existing leak gets larger. This is true for either an internal leak like a head gasket or an external leak in a radiator.
    With a head gasket leak, either the gasket material has degraded or the metal is cracked or warped, resulting in a leak. In the case of a radiator leak, more often than not another leak will spring somewhere in the core in short order because wear and degradation is relative to the age of the unit. If you’re getting leaks, in the final analysis the engine has lost its sealing ability internally or externally. Mating and sealing surfaces or component integrity must be restored to stop the coolant leak.
    In extreme cases the overuse of radiator stop leak can clog up the heater core and even stop the heater from working. It can also stop an entire bank of water jackets, resulting in a constant state of overheating. To solve this problem, the expansion plugs have to be removed from the entire engine block and the block has to be power-flushed in order to clean out the stop leak product. This stuff harms more cars than it fixes, period.

    The way some of this stuff is supposed to work, the stuff is supposed to bond and harden with heat where it is the hottest, such as next to a head gasket leak, and whatever else is there that didn't bond to anything, could likely be cleaned out a bit by back flushing with a garden hose, hopefully. But I guess that's just one man's theory here.

    If the car was bought for $900 and it ran fine then a few months later the headgasket blows then it's ok to use whatever magic in the bottle that's out there. Shelling out $1000+ for a head gasket replacement that's worth more than the entire car is ridiculous.

    1999 Chevy Tahoe 5.7L V8 350 been running fine, complete new radiator system a year ago. One day the engine lost power going down the interstate and the whole vehicle started shaking badly when I tried to accelerate. Had to be towed home. Codes showing multiple misfires. I did a tune up with new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, pcv valve, and was still having the same problem, and losing a ton of coolant, but no leaks anywhere. I have a hole in one muffler and am leaking fluid from the pipe of that one muffler, the other is fine. The radiator doesn't have any white bubbles, but I took off my oil cap and it has the coolant gunk under it, and you can see it well when shining a light down the oil filler tube on the sidewalls. Not sure what to do at this point. It's only worth around $1500 maybe, and I've already sunk over $8k into it over the past 3 years. I may have to sell as is to the highest bidding backyard bubba.

I hope you read this before it's deleted.... the best is pure sodium silicate at least 500 mL or 2...if your car has a lot of miles it's not worth a mechanics bill ... all you have to do is google it...the stuff they sell over the counter is watered down so you have to buy 2 or more. I used the Bar's Leaks Blown Head Gasket Repair on my 1992 Mercury Cougar LS 3.8L back in May (2016) and it worked great. I had leak on the vacuum side so oil and coolant were not mixing at the time I caught the problem. The product worked, however, the next month I broke my ankle in 3 places and had surgery and couldn't drive for 2 1/2 months. After I could start driving again, my water pump started pouring antifreeze out of the weep hole and I had to replace the water pump. When I took the old water pump off I noticed a white film of particles covering the water pump internal components as well as all of the hoses. I had to replace the water pump, hoses, thermostat, as well as flush the system multiple times because the Bar's Leaks ruined everything pretty much. Maybe my water pump went out because the car sat for 2 1/2 months not being driven, although every week I would start the car and let it run for 15 or 20 minutes. The head gasket is still repaired though, 6 months later.

    lol, crossing the road may, or may not, be dangerous. I was really hoping this video would give something extra to hte idea of fixing these things, but unfortunatly it's yet another - "It may work, but it may not, so be careful" lol. I'm really not sure why the Internet is covered with videos of people suggesting you do or dont try new ideas.
    It should be entitled "Possible problems when using head gasket liquid sealant". The copper liquid shown that can be wiped away hasn't reached temperature yet that has melted its particles - this temperature is only at the point of combustion/gasket edge, and any extra liquid copper will just flow around the water channels because it will never reach anything like the temp needed to solidify it. If liquid copper can reach that solidifying temp anywhere else in your engine, then your engines defied the laws of physics, or you're driving too close to the sun 8-)
    It's a good clear video though, and does give some intersting points on using this stuff - I have a guinea pig car here and will be trying a version of this on a consistant leak :-) This should be fun, but for £10 i've gotta test this stuff !

      +Phil Smith hi i work on engines every day and through the years , i have ran across it alot you can cure a head gasket leak on just about anything it really comes down to how bad it is , lets say the car runs fine but has a small leak . Cant see white smoke but you can smell coolant then this fix should work , if you have white smoke pouring out the exhaust then bypass the radiator and pull thermastat and you straight liquid glass , may take one or 2 application , if you have oil and coolant mixing use the blue devil , and drain the oil the minute your done ,

  • @1ftintheflames
    @1ftintheflames 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    one key factor here. yes headgaskets are usually cheap for the gaskets themselves. BUUUUTTTTTT. people when they do break down and buy/replace them, they often dont resurface the heads or have the valve seals replaced or do a valve lap. so on an engine with 75k+ thats like doing a timing belt and only replacing the belt without doing the waterpump and the pulley/ tensioner set. so now your back together and a month later your waterpump starts puking or a pulley starts screamin or the tensioner fails. now because you went cheap and replaced just the part that was bad and not all interfacing components with the same amount of wear you now get to start back at square 1. same idea just slapping a new gasket on with heads that should have had a valve lap, seals replaced, and resurfacing done. now in the same year of doing it you can still end up drinking oil through valve seals when they fail, or the issues without doing a valve job- losing comp/misfiring/lean conditions through uneven/unsealing valve seats. not to mention the head gasket inevitably failing since it was pressed down with a warped head.
    do the whole job in entirety or dont waste the time and money. you wouldnt replace only brake pads and not turn the rotors, that is unless you want to burn through your pads in 6 months. jus sayin. theres 1 right way and many wrong ways.

    got some quick questions ; could a symptom of a blown head gasket be :
    -the heater will not blow warm air ?

    • @jamiejonesthecarman

    GM technician and believe it or not the stop leak crap was placed in that engine from a RECALL on those engine :) some smart guy from GM legal department dreamed up a soltion to all those lower intake gasket issues they had with those engines. Some rocket scientist figured if they can get all the cars to come in for a bullshit recall lets say where it says the throttle body has an improper torgue vale and the bolts need to be replaced on the throttle body ? I shit you not that's the recall. What it does not tell you is after replacing the bolts GM wanted you as the technician to add a bottle of bars leak to the cooling system to prevent the throttle body from leaking .. (isn't needed) it is all smoke and mirrors to get the cars in to add bars leak to the system without the customer knowing it. This solved all the lower intake leaks. A lot of us technicians refused to add that crap to a perfectly fine running auto because it clogs shit .

    You say 22 bucks for a head gasket, now add at least another 100 on to that and then depending on where you go it could be as high as 130 bucks an hour to do the work. If you get out of any shop under a 1000 bucks I would be amazed. So basically do I want to trust a guy I don't know or try some stop-leak. I do my own work but there are to many people that just don't know, AND, there are far to many shysters out there.

    4 or 5 hours ?? On a head replace ? Is this a lawn mower? Simply put , cars that are valued at under 2k should only be using sealer additives... I've never seen a head replacement repair for less than $1200 and just like playing Russian roulette with sealers you also can have further damage when pulling apart the heads and finding out the block is cracked also ( another thing that sodium silicate can fix ) . I hate when some car shops sell a customer a head job on a car worth $800. Why not try a $50 fix and us it or toss it ?? Enjoyed the video and thank you.

    • @jamiejonesthecarman

      sorry got your comment mixed up with another, so most cars we can swap heads in less than 6 hours , unless its something crazy like the aluminum blocks that tend to have head bolts strip,, but i totally agree that it just don't make sense to spend more money to a shop than the cars worth, not to mention they are going to bleed you dry for every penny they can get you for . lol you just brought up the old school liquid glass , i have never seen it not work although sometimes it takes 2 trys , also you have to bypass the rad and heater core . that stuff is only 20 bucks , now if you got a weekend off and do the work yourself mayby cost 100 plus the machine shop, tks for the reply
