I was thinking that it would be comparable to the Studio Display (which is not on sale). OK - for our office the S9 is much worse. Comparing the build quality is night & day. The Studio Display is way (WAY) better quality. It was easier to set up. The sound is amazing (although these are work computers so we don't really care about the speakers, TBH). Thanks, Joe, for the 2nd video. Adding more perspective for Apple Studio Display. If you are a Windows user, Display Studio won't make sense. If you are a Mac user, ASD is the only 5K retina display that does justice to macOS. It renders beautiful, crisp fonts and colors and supports macOS' true tone colors, which adjust automatically based on ambient lighting conditions. Just bought the Apple Studio Display (ASD) a few days ago. Brightness is 600 nits, which is excellent, and I usually run it at half brightness level. The camera is okay, but not the best. I'd probably use my Logitech camera for calls instead of the in-built one. The speakers are better than most found on monitors. The build quality is impressive. It looks, feels, and works like an Apple device. I went for the glossy display with a tilt-only stand. I didn't think spending extra on the height-adjustable stand or nano-texture was worthwhile as there are other ways I can play with the height (riser, table height, etc.), and I don't have any direct sunlight hitting the display, so nano-texture wasn't needed. I also read (no direct evidence) that nano texture coating requires additional care and is prone to scratching. I was waiting for the launch of Samsung's Viewfinity S9 (5K 27 inch). After its launch in some Asian markets and price of over $1,300 - as a Mac user, it made sense to buy the Apple Studio Display for the cohesiveness with the Apple ecosystem and the fact that it will just work. You don't need to set/tweak settings. Plugin the Thunderbolt cable & supply power, and you're ready. The Studio Display also comes with firmware updates and has an A13 bionic chip (used in iPhone 11) embedded in it. Apart from being fancy, they have not fully captured the placement of this powerful chip (maybe it's used for the web camera, cooling functions, or spatial audio of the speakers). I also considered buying the LG Ultrafine 5K display (half price of ASD), but given it's 6 years old and most LG panels from that era suffer from the pink hue issue, I decided against it. Some other notable mentions: a. can control speaker volume from the Apple keyboard b. can adjust screen brightness from the Apple keyboard c. the ambient light sensor is on the far left on the top chin of the monitor, so you can mount your own web camera in the center of the top chin without worrying about blocking the ambient light sensor d. In India, this monitor ships with a 15A power plug, so you need access to a power plug light point I'll keep adding stuff here as I learn more and use it as my daily driver. ASD's price is obnoxious, but most Apple products are priced that way. If you spend many hours in front of your macOS screen, ASD is an expensive but makes-sense choice for Mac users.
ASD worth the price. It is the best choice for mac user. I also don't want something fancy but a good monitor. smart functions make me feel upset after I using this like a week.

Listing all S9's features that hasn't in the Studio Display and the screen calibration achieving so close results is what I was looking for. Thank you! But, the lack of the Studio Display's fidelity sound on the S9 makes me still thinking on the Apple's device. If S9 comes much cheaper, under US$ 700, I can thin about it. More than this I prefer to invest on Apple device, knowing that I can sell it later with a goo price, if I wish. But, I'm thinking now... for the monitors getting so close in brightness and colors, didi you downgrade the Studio Display on the calibration section?
If possible, could you please test if its possible to connect a Windows PC via the usb-c or mini displayport and still get a 5K image? The main reason why I'm considering buying this monitor is to be able to use both my Mac via Thunderbolt and my PC via usb-c or mini display port.
What about ups glow? Which one has worse ups glow? Is any of these two better at ips glow compared to a normal mid range monitor. And no backlight bleeding right?
Hi could you do a disk speed test on the I/O ports of the S9? Wonder if they work well or share bandwidth if multiple external drives are plugged in at once. Thank you!
One question, if you connect an s23, and activate the Dex mode, can viewfinity charge through the usb type c connection to the s23? And if the answer is yes... you can use the pause USB power delivery?
I saw and listened in many other videos that the viewfinity s9 monitor spearks are not working well.its true? 😮otherside ,could I connect asus rogstrix gt 531 laptop to the Apple Studio Display?
Very nice review - concise and with pretty much every piece of information I wanted. I wonder about that brightness control from better display app being different from what the in-display settings sets. If that was DDC control, that should be a change made to the same thing unless betterdisplay simply made a dark overlay without affecting backlight brightness on the monitor itself... Did you try something like Lunar app? It will tell you if you are running DDC control or just software overlay to control brightness.
How about compatibility when you connect the computer? Is it as fast as the ASD or does it take more time to connect and boot up? I’be tried several 4K monitors for mac but they all take a while for Mac OS X to “get used to” and scale everything right. A lot of the time, the dock in Mac OS X takes some time to show up or end up in the right place.
I tried out two other 5K monitors that use the same panel, the ViewSonic VG2781-5k and the Rich Vision RV100. Both had a noticeable graininess on the screen surface due to the coarse matte texture, especially when reading documents with white backgrounds and black text. Does the Samsung Viewfinity S9 5K have the same issue?
@@bernaferrari Then a 5K matte screen is contradictory; the PPI of a 4K matte screen matches the granularity of the matte, so they don't interfere with each other. However, in 5K, the granularity of the matte is larger than the PPI, leading to a very odd visual experience.
The glaring error, that Apple, which built a powerful A13 chip and an iOS operating system into this monitor, didn't add WIFI to get at least Airplay Mirroring, is stupid. This monitor could drive a full tvOS…
sometimes you have to wonder how the decision making works at Apple. They build a beautiful display out of premium materials with great speakers and a chip that could make it a standalone smart display, but then they decide not to add ANYTHING besides Siri and Atmos processing to it 🤦♂ They should have put tvOS into it, because with the built in power adaptor you could easily pick it up and take it anywhere and start playing TV on it. I love mine (with nano texture), but I am disappointed in this way.
This was an outstanding video and provided a lot of useful information. If my old Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display dies in the future, this Samsung View-finity S9, appears to be an excellent replacement since it supports computers with a mini display port like my 2010, “Mac mini” (smile…smile).
@@JimmyDoresHairDye So, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on why you prefer the Apple "Studio Display" over the soon to be released in the USA Samsung View-finity S9. As for myself, just always prefer to have a full Apple system (i.e. desktop, monitor, keyboard, track-pad, and mouse, etc.) for my primary computer system. However, for my back-up desktop computers think this Samsung View-finity S9, will make as excellent monitor for both my 2010 "mac mini" and 2014, space gray "trash can" Mac Pro since, both can support the mini display port. The base model ASD has a tilt stand and can be found for about the same price as the s9.
Great video. I don't think it's convinced me that the S9 is better than the Studio Display, mostly because of build quality and design. However it's a strong contender, especially with the extra features like DP, bluetooth, airplay, etc
@@joekongsan I'm in Korea..... I would never choose the Samsung because: - Low quality speakers - Webcam image quality was brutal - Smart TV functionality is a gimmick - I don't need targeted adds - Inferior build quality - Samsung matte screen is inferior to Apple's glossy screen - Apple has superior aesthetics
Great video. You can clearly see the matte screen does it's job great. I wonder if you compared the S9 vs a Matte ASD, if the ASD is still sharper or looks better in terms of colors because Apple did something very Apple like and found a way to remove glare but still make it less matte than other screens Apple has a big advantage in design and build quality as well as the speakers while Samsung has an advantage in price and the stand flexibility in the box for free with a matte display (assuming you want matte) If you care about sound quality then it's kind of a wash because you will likely have to buy some external speakers for the S9 I may end up getting 1 ASD to sit in the middle and have that be glossy to watch content on if I need to or for vibrant colors for color grading and then have 2 S9's vertical on each side. If you are wondering what I do I am a software engineer and YES I will use all 3 lol I currently have a 5k 2019 iMac pro and a LG 5K Ultrafine and I feel like I need more window space This just made my decision even tougher hahaha if the S9 does drop in price in 4-5 months then that might make the decision easier
Unfortunately, I don't have and I don't plan buying ASD with Nano texture one.. But I'm sure Apple Nano Texture should worth the money. You get what you pay for. By the way, the standard ASD is a good choice and I think you won't regret it. but the LG Ultrafine also a good choice as well. It's really cheap now in the US. I had it last year from Ebay when I was in US for $600. It's a steal!

I wonder if it works better with the new chips on M1/M2 I also experience a weird thing where if I place a light window on my LG and leave it there for a while and then move the window out while having everything else in a dark theme it looks like it has screen burn in which is weird because it’s not OLED I ll wait until I can see these in person to decide how the Matte finish looks Thanks for the review. It’s awesome. Someone might eventually do a matte to matte comparison when Samsung releases whatever gag order they might have here in the USA
Thanks for the thorough review. I was quite disposed to like the Samsung - a lot. I don’t, and I can’t quite put the finger on it. Maybe it’s the wobbliness, the controls, the speakers… Perhaps I can find a physical Viewfinity S9 in a shop to make up my mind. If I can’t, I’ll probably end up with the ASD, though I didn’t mean to.
i like the flushed glass of my ASD and the aluminium case. one thing i didn't like about my previous monitor (not the samsung) was the plastic enclosure the glass screen sits in. it creaked every time i held it to adjust the monitor's height, and felt really cheap. wobbled too when i typed. the ASD feels premium. and the ports are easily accessible, not hidden underneath or behind the stand. i use my mac and pc laptops with it via thunderbolt. on the pc you can't adjust the brightness, which is annoying, but i rarely need to, so it's bearable.
JOE ...the next time you do a comparison between an Apple monitor & another brand....put a big green apple on the base of the Apple monitor .....so we are in no doubt 😅😅😅😅😅😅
In my country, the Apple Studio Display is $2378 and the Samsung ViewFinity S9 is $646, so I think the logical thing to do at these prices is to go with the S9.
The worst part of samsung S9 is that, its panel is supplied by BOE, not by samsung display themselves, surprisingly. This panel is nothing but inferior compared to the LG panel in apple's studio display
Before getting to calibration I was saying “how is possible that this crap monitor (Apple) sold at 2000€, without support to HDR, can still be so much better…” but then I understood that S9 is very good as well, but only if I buy a calibration kit, am I right? Which one would you suggest for a non-professionist user? Thanks ja
I really hope samsung will bring out a glossy version of the S9. Because that’s literally the only downside it has right now. Yes, the studio display is reflective, but after half a year, you wouldn’t even notice it anymore (at least, that’s my experience with apple products) And it also has better color accuracy
One thing I don't like about Samsung is the name. They should try to come up with something better! (I'm very interested in Samsung's display but just compare the names from Apple and Samsung. I know, Samsung got way more products and versions but I hope they can come up with something better anyways.)
It sounds like other than the speakers and perhaps build quality, the Samsung S9 is equal to or better than the Apple Studio monitor in every other way. Samsung for the win.

The main reason why I'm considering buying this monitor is to be able to use both my Mac via Thunderbolt and my PC via usb-c or mini display port.
I'd like to try that too. Unfortunately, I didn't have any PC or any devices that can test the minidisplayport :(
What about ups glow? Which one has worse ups glow? Is any of these two better at ips glow compared to a normal mid range monitor. And no backlight bleeding right?
Hi could you do a disk speed test on the I/O ports of the S9? Wonder if they work well or share bandwidth if multiple external drives are plugged in at once. Thank you!
Ok, I will!
One question, if you connect an s23, and activate the Dex mode, can viewfinity charge through the usb type c connection to the s23? And if the answer is yes... you can use the pause USB power delivery?
Great video! Any data on Adobe RGB %? I know Apple are about 86%. Adobe RGB
I saw and listened in many other videos that the viewfinity s9 monitor spearks are not working well.its true? 😮otherside ,could I connect asus rogstrix gt 531 laptop to the Apple Studio Display?
Bro you didn’t tell us calibration results like contrast ratio, black level and how much dci p3
The Apple seems to have better luminance uniformity, where the Samsung appears to get dimmer at either side? Visible during the calibration section
Don't forget that all the smart tv stuff gets in the way and the silly blue timeout screen, if its anything like it's 4k, M8 counterpart
About the pink edge problem on older panels mentioned by Joe - Has Apple shown to be able to fix that? By replacing the panel?
Since it out of warranty, so I just leave it there. Too much money for replacing the panel. That's why I think the longer warranty, the better.
5K should work, 4K’s always a bit of a pain in the ****.
Yes
@@bernaferrari Then a 5K matte screen is contradictory; the PPI of a 4K matte screen matches the granularity of the matte, so they don't interfere with each other. However, in 5K, the granularity of the matte is larger than the PPI, leading to a very odd visual experience.
Thanks for video, usefull 👍
Glad it was helpful!
I have a Studio display and I like it.
I think everybody who has it love it. It worth the price.
@@chuck7415 This is 100% correct. These types of decisions from Apple, I can never understand.
how much?
In Thailand is 45,990 Baht. (~$1,350)
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
I'm about to make the jump from the 27" Cinema Display to the new studio display. I almost feel guilty because the Cinema Display still looks great!
(smile...smile)
@@transitengineer I'm afraid that Viewfinity S9 probably not to be an excellent for your old mac mini.
I bought this monitor for my 2019 Mac Pro and it doesn't work with any intel macs that I have.
Check the link here, it is my recent video which I test this monitor with my intel macs:
th-cam.com/video/bMrtZw8RuVU/w-d-xo.html
For the price differential I would choose the Apple Studio Display all day every day.
ASD is alot more expensive? Especially because you dont get a stand?
@@ezBeanie it's about the same price... the ASD can be found cheaper at the moment actually. You can find an ASD with vesa mount for 1480 Euro's ... an S9 will apparently cost 1599 Euro's... both will need a seperate vesa stand. The base model ASD has a tilt stand and can be found for about the same price as the s9.
@@ezBeanie just get a monitor arm and you'll never have to worry about stands ever again.
@@extrasoap4881 true :D
Only 1 Thunderbolt port? No glossy version….
Yes, only 1 Thunderbot port. same as Apple Studio display and LG Ultrafine 5K.
Great video. I don't think it's convinced me that the S9 is better than the Studio Display, mostly because of build quality and design. However it's a strong contender, especially with the extra features like DP, bluetooth, airplay, etc
The price in Thailand is good on Samsung. About 45% cheaper than the same specs on Apple.
@@joekongsan
I'm in Korea.....
I would never choose the Samsung because:
- Low quality speakers
- Webcam image quality was brutal
- Smart TV functionality is a gimmick - I don't need targeted adds
- Inferior build quality
- Samsung matte screen is inferior to Apple's glossy screen
- Apple has superior aesthetics
I don't care about crapple, does this have displayport to connect to a PC
It does have a minidisplayport.
@@joekongsan version 2.1 or enough bandwidth for 5k,10bit, 4:4:4?
@@gohanpcgamer I think it's version 1.4 not 2.1
Dell UltraSharp U2723QE or Samsung S9?
I haven't try U2723QE yet.
Great video. You can clearly see the matte screen does it's job great.
I wonder if you compared the S9 vs a Matte ASD, if the ASD is still sharper or looks better in terms of colors because Apple did something very Apple like and found a way to remove glare but still make it less matte than other screens
Apple has a big advantage in design and build quality as well as the speakers while Samsung has an advantage in price and the stand flexibility in the box for free with a matte display (assuming you want matte)
If you care about sound quality then it's kind of a wash because you will likely have to buy some external speakers for the S9
I may end up getting 1 ASD to sit in the middle and have that be glossy to watch content on if I need to or for vibrant colors for color grading and then have 2 S9's vertical on each side. If you are wondering what I do I am a software engineer and YES I will use all 3 lol I currently have a 5k 2019 iMac pro and a LG 5K Ultrafine and I feel like I need more window space
This just made my decision even tougher hahaha if the S9 does drop in price in 4-5 months then that might make the decision easier
@@joekongsan oh I know. I m definitely not expecting you to buy one! Lol
I currently have the LG. I have had a meh experience with it but maybe it is my iMac with the T2 chip which has connectivity issues sometimes
The monitor would remain off and I would have to restart my computer. I do not like it for that reason.
I wonder if it works better with the new chips on M1/M2
I also experience a weird thing where if I place a light window on my LG and leave it there for a while and then move the window out while having everything else in a dark theme it looks like it has screen burn in which is weird because it’s not OLED
I ll wait until I can see these in person to decide how the Matte finish looks
Thanks for the review.
JOE ...the next time you do a comparison between an Apple monitor & another brand....put a big green apple on the base of the Apple monitor .....so we are in no doubt 😅😅😅😅😅😅
sure I will!
Thanks!
Welcome!
This panel is nothing but inferior compared to the LG panel in apple's studio display
impressive!!!!
thank you
Before getting to calibration I was saying “how is possible that this crap monitor (Apple) sold at 2000€, without support to HDR, can still be so much better…” but then I understood that S9 is very good as well, but only if I buy a calibration kit, am I right? Which one would you suggest for a non-professionist user? Thanks ja
I really hope samsung will bring out a glossy version of the S9.
Because that’s literally the only downside it has right now.
Yes, the studio display is reflective, but after half a year, you wouldn’t even notice it anymore (at least, that’s my experience with apple products)
And it also has better color accuracy
One thing I don't like about Samsung is the name. They should try to come up with something better!
(I'm very interested in Samsung's display but just compare the names from Apple and Samsung. I know, Samsung got way more products and versions but I hope they can come up with something better anyways.)

I don't like apple brand but this time i will prefer the apple studio
Yes, you get what you pay for. Apple worth the money.
It sounds like other than the speakers and perhaps build quality, the Samsung S9 is equal to or better than the Apple Studio monitor in every other way. Samsung for the win.
Apple wins if you place a premium on aesthetics (no power brick) and you care about speaker quality.
@@cylackand if you don’t want matte

Apple Studio Display for the win.....
So Samsung made a very close imitation. Think I’ll stick my studio displays. Thanks.
If you already have a studio display this product clearly isn't targeted at you....
apple display better. it's worth its price
I do agree!
