Notice how Bobby can hardly catch his breath to speak through nerves, and then two minutes later, he turns in the performance of the ages and this become his song forever ... such talent and professionalism. And so dapper too!
OMG...The late Bobby Hatfield! I was 15 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. He owns this song. RIP Bobby! We miss you! ❤
Yes, Bobby was amazing. A counter-tenor he could go from baritone to G5 or higher, those high notes were NOT falsetto. Bobby was a natural high-register Tenor. Wait till you hear Bobby and Bill together. "You've Lost That Lovin' Felling. There is so much more to find. Bobby's "Stay With Me" Bill's "Brown Eyed Woman," They were inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame in 2003. Bobby passed away 8 m0nths later, age 63. Bill is still touring, with another partner. He is 81 years old. But their music and their great talent has never been equaled
You are so right, Dawna. He had a full, rich middle voice and also a fine, full high register, far more than a simple falsetto. (Well, okay, he hit the whistle register at the end. ;-) )
@@nantague After almost 60 years I still listen to Bobby in awe and admiration. I'm not forgetting Bill, he was great in his own right. But Bobby......!!
Zero auto-tune here either... Just pure raw talent. Recently at a family function this was played, and my mom mentioned my great uncle (her uncle, played locally) could sing this note for note. Thinking back, I heard it but never appriciated it and in fact he could nail it note for note.
You can really tell how nervous Bobby was before that performance. His mom was in the audience. First time she'd seen him perform live, and this was one of her favorite songs. I'm sure she was proud.
1st there are 2 Righteous Bros. But they also did solos in their careers. This was live on the Andy Williams show there was no do overs or auto-tone just his amazing voice and a small microphone. Bobby Hatfield owns this song no one can touch his performance it was effortless, smooth and sheer perfection.
Their music is known as "blue-eyed soul." They got their name from black marines who called out at their performance that they were/their music was "righteous". I'm sooo glad that you included the introduction with Andy Williams- it was his weekly show on TV. Another song on this same show is a funny, fool- around, ad-lib performance of "What I Say" with Andy who was also a famous singer in the day with a beautiful voice. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. My favourite song from "Bob And Bill" is "Soul And Inspiration". Please check it out. It's gorgeous!
Andy Williams also recorded Unchained Melody amongst many many others, no one has ever matched Bobby's rendition though. No wonder he shook Bobby's hand afterwards, he knew he was beaten! Although have to give kudos to his orchestra, they did a fantastic job with the music.
@@rubydazzler Yes, Bobby tops the singing and interpretation of Unchained Melody. To have an orchestra on his show demonstrated the influence of Andy Williams. I am an Australian but we did have The Andy Williams Show on TV when I was young and it was very enjoyable. I love Andy's voice and have a CD of all his wonderful, best songs.
Listen to the people that were talked about, the introduction was by Andy Williams a good singer, and Andy talked about Tony Bennet another good singer. Bill was joking when he said “I didn’t think it was going to be a hit.” Bill & Bobby had agreed to do 1 solo each, per album. Unchained Melody was to be a solo & both wanted to record it. "Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955), ...Nobody does it like Bobby Hatfield.
I just LOVED your reaction! I have one for you..."Til the World Ends" by Three Dog Night. Very few people knew they sang a beautiful love song. Your just played one of my favorites. Please try this one. I promise. It won't disappoint. The voice and music will remind you of this song.
I’m so glad you showed the banter with Andy Williams first. When Bill and Bobby decided to do one solo on each album this was the first song they chose, but each wanted to sing it. So they flipped a coin to decide. I’m so glad Bobby won! They are wearing pink because it was Valentine’s Day. Bobby’s mom was in the audience and hadn’t heard him in person since he started singing professionally. Many comments have said that lip bite at the end meant he knew he had nailed it. BTW-The studio version of this song was featured in the movie, Ghost.
Beautiful! This song was played on the radio more than any other song in the 20th century. For a Righteous Brothers song with a totally different vibe: The Righteous Brothers {I Just Wanna Make Love}.wmv (3:24).
The Platters, one of my favorite oldies groups. I feel so privileged to have seen them in person. My family hated that I played their record over and over.
@Munroe's Corner I've got a BeeGee's song for you that's always been such a beautiful one, "Words". And Righteous Brothers' songs "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
Bobby's performance on this show...Live...is better than the recorded version! imo. What a panty dropper he was! I'm sure this song is responsible for a lot of babies! lol. Romance and Love! ❤🔥
I got your back Munroe. I'm from the era that had what we like to call real music, and I'm excited to see you explore it. Beware: this is a super deep rabbit hole. Here are a few to get you started: (1) The Platters - Only You 1955 (HD) (2:47); (2) Peter, Paul and Mary - Blowing in the Wind (3:01); (3) TRACES by THE LETTERMEN (2:46); (4) GOOD VIBRATIONS (HD) THE BEACH BOYS (4:24); (5) Connie Francis "Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing" on The Ed Sullivan Show (2:41).
Nice reaction! We definitely need more love songs. Here is my recommendation for that. Van Morrison does not disappoint for putting his soul and love into his music. Three songs of his that are perfect for this: Into the Mystic, Tupelo Honey, and Have I Told You Lately. True love songs. Oh, and Crazy Love. 😊
A set of real brothers from the same era are *The Everly Brothers.* songs: Cathy's Clown. Wake Up Little Susie. Bobby didn't need falsetto. That was his natural range as a counter tenor. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley weren't really brothers. They told you in the video how they got their name.
Bobby never recorded Unchained Melody as a solo. He sang this live on the Andy Williams show which I watched in 1965 when I was 18. The recorded released cover is Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield both singing the song and the one you hear in the movie Ghost. You won't hear those long runs and high vocals in the original recording. I had always wished Bobby had recorded this solo but this tape is the only Live version of Bobby singing the song solo. R.I P which is still my favorite.
Bro. You go down that "rabbit hole" into the past and you're gonna find voices you never even imagined. I'm talking thousands of songs. Check out the b&w youtube footage of Jackie Wilson singing "Danny Boy." Then listen to the Platters. Gonna blow your mind.
Actually, Bill Medley was joking about it not being a hit. According to Bill's autobiographry, Phil Spector who was their producer didn't think it was going to be a hit. So much so, that he let Bill produce the song. It was set as the "B" side of the 45rpm record by Spector (For those youngin's in the audience, vinyl records had two sides, the "A" was what the DJ was supposed to play and the "B" was kinda a throwaway). Some DJ who couldn't follow rules (LOL), liked Unchained Melody and he got it started on it's way to being a hit. Which totally pissed off Phil Spector. The first pressings of the record listed Medley as the producer. After it became a hit a year later, Spector had the labels changed so that he was the producer. Damn petty if you ask me, but Spector went on to be an abusive husband and convicted murderer. So not real stable to begin with. You really need to try "You've Lost that Loving Feeling", done by Bill and Bobby.
Excellent reaction. Making comparable music today is a lost art.
