NO ONE will ever top this performance of this song. KD is just beyond amazing here. I am so glad to say she is Canadian and proud to have her as one of our own. I have loved her music for decades, the power and the sweetness and the sultriness is beyond compare and that's saying nothing of the theatrics she throws in for entertainment purposes. Best performance of this song ever done. Cohen even admitted it.
First time I've ever seen someone cry listening to a song the first time ... much less someone reacting to a song. Heartfelt ... no higher compliment to a singer. Remember watching this performance during the 2010 Olympics. So hard to believe 14 years just flew by. This performance was absolutely on another planet. She made Vancouver look great for giving her the much deserved spotlight. She represented Canada so well ... very proud Canadians!
Her version of this song will always be my favourite. I cry every single time I hear it. It is, in my opinion, the BEST rendition of this beautiful song.

The version of this that she did in 2006 and in front of Leonard Cohen on the night of his induction into the Canadian Songwriter's Hall Of Fame is my personal favourite cover of this song. This was his reaction that night: "Leonard Cohen's partner, singer Anjani Thomas, in an interview with Wears the Trousers magazine, says that of all the interpretations the famous song has been given, it's k.d.'s she and Cohen see as the definitive one: “After hearing k.d. lang perform that song at the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2006 we looked at each other and said, ‘well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It’s really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection’. I don’t think I could even try it, because it’s been so magnificently done.” Leonard Cohen was asked to sing the song on this night at the Olympcs gala and he told them to ask Lang because it was her song now, so they did. This tells how much he thought of her talent. To me this is one of the most Canadian moments ever. A person, who I think is the best singer Canada has ever produced (with nods to Joni, Burt, Celine and Mr. Buble) singing a song written by the best songwriter Canada has ever produced (with nods to Neils Young and Peart, Joni, Burt and Bryan) at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. An amazing moment in Canadian sport and music history.
You nailed it with her voice being like butter. Take a listen to her version of “The air that I breathe”. It’s like warm honey. Her biggest radio hit was “constant craving” which is exceptional too. Welcome to k.d.!
k.d. is in a class of her own. She can sing anything beautifully but this performance was perfection. Your reaction mirrored many of ours watching - you cannot help but feel emotional watching her in action.
This is performing and singing, simple as that , perfect build up , perfect control, no shouting, absolutely beautiful . The most underrated singer ever, she is SOOOO special. Was a privilege to watch you go through all the emotions you had, thank you! xx
She started out as a Country singer. But when those in Nashville found out that she was gay, they turned against her. And it's my belief that her career got even stronger and bigger.
She had the power to blow the roof off the building but still gave the lower, quieter notes their due...she never short-changes a note. First time I heard her was forever ago on The Tonight Show with Carson. She sang "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray", a Patsy Cline song, and totally blew me away. K D Lang's voice is up there with Barbra Streisand's. They are both one of a kind talents of their generations. Unbelievably talented; strong, clear, beautiful voices capable of making your spirit soar while bringing tears to your eyes. Generations ago there was Billie Holliday; Judy Garland; Peggy Lee; Rosemary Clooney; (I know I'm missing others) that couldn't be copied. These women were God's gift to the world. We should say a prayer of thanks -- they enrich our lives.
Thanks. Just fliped past this but I caught KD Lang name and returned. She is a marvelous talent. Perfectly done. I have not heard her in ages. What a treat
You such an amazing strong beautiful girl , i am in my 80s and just adore you 😍😍😍 when i here you sing and see that beautiful generous soul 🙏🙏🙏 you bring me in my Winter years 😍😘🙏💓💓💓💓🌹👏👏👏🌹👍🏻
One of my all time favourite performances ever! So proud she's a fellow Canadian. I watched this performance live from Whistler, BC where the skiing and other competitions were going to be happening over the next 2 weeks. This performance abslutely made the opening ceremonies. Gorgeous
I remembering watching this back in 2010. It was magical. The visuals really enhanced the performance as well. Also, let's compare these opening Olympics to the ones we just had. Pentatonix also covers this song, they do an amazing job as well but I don't think it tops this one!
The Olympic Committee asked Leonard Cohen to sing Hallelujah at the Opening Ceremonies. His words were “Ask KD, it’s her song now”. This was especially poignant because a Georgian luge competitor died on the track on the same day. Hence the white suit and very subtle but effective lighting, especially when they turn to doves. KD delivered and then some, with this exceptional performance. She was speaking to the world on behalf of all Canadians who were not just sad that someone died, but that we as hosts had failed in our duty to keep everyone safe.
this is why i watch reaction videos: as an empath, watching another empath be overwhelmed by the power of music, delivered by a performer who transcends ego to impart the music's message, means i get to experience it like it's the first time all over again, over and over thanks for that, it's food for the soul, like kd herself
All of us have CRIED for someone who did'n't feel the same and I believe she conveys that in this MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE! I LOVE her Shadowland album and played it a million times! -San Francisco fan girl
'HALLELUJAH" was written by Leonard Cohen. I heard KD Lang perform it in Montreal, and it was quite memorable...perhaps the best cover of this song I've heard.
I love and adore kd lang. She's incredible. She'll be performing at the CCMA Awards on September 14, 2024 in Edmonton, Alberta. She's reuniting with her old band. Apparently she's really looking forward to it. I read that it will air on CTV here in Canada.
I remember this well as she’d been away from performing a while. Then this. I got on my knees in front of the tv and bowed in gratitude. Following this it seems everyone had to record it, it got a little tedious. I will always stop and listen to her when she presents on my feed. Fun fact. Ran into her in my massage therapist’s office in Vancouver once and that voice comes out of a relatively small human. Not much bigger than me (5’2).
She said in an interview that, shortly before she went on stage, she was made aware of the death earlier that day of Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritishvili, during a training run. She said the emotion from hearing that sorrowful news affected her performance. I think you can hear it in her voice.
One of my all-time favourites... it brings tears to my eyes and covers my body in goosebumps! I've heard this countless times; but, this rendition was totally stunning!! p.s., Hi, Nick... I don't intend to be rude; but, Leonard Cohen actually wrote Hallelujah... I only know this because both Leonard and k.d. are both Canadian treasures!!
I watched this live and it ripped through me. KD is an amazing talent and human. I tried to find it for a long time so I could show it to other but it kept getting blocked. I would love to meet this legend, but I know I never well. Amazing!
Judy Garland, Patsy Klein, Karen Carpenter and K D Lang have all been described as having Perfect Voices. True, crisp, clear sound. All great for good reason.
If you have time to explore kd’s music.. please watch her video of Constant Craving. She also has several other videos of her singing Hallelujah, including one in which she’s singing it for Leonard Cohen at an awards show. I believe that is when he said that the song was now hers.. he would not sing it again!
There is a story associated with this performance of Hallelujah, according to Leonard Cohen's son, Adam Cohen. Apparently, the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee asked Leonard Cohen to perform his iconic song. He was however, off tour, recovering from a back operation/injury and could not commit to the performance. Leonard knew k.d. had been asked to perform, and he apparently suggested they ask her to sing Hallelujah saying, "it's k.d.'s song now, what more do you need?" I cannot ever listen to k.d. sing Hallelujah without completely breaking down into a flood of tears. No other performance of Hallelujsh by any other artist, and I've heard dozens and dozens of renditions, has this impact on me. I think Mr Cohen was correct, it is k.d. Lang's song now.
k.d also performed this song at Leonard Cohens induction into the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame he was in the audience & said the song can be put to bed it’s been sung to it’s ultimate blissful state of perfection no one else need to to cover it ❤ more k.d please x

K.D. Lang has a rich beautiful voice. ❤
You should see K.D.Lang 'Constant Cravings" Once you here this you listen to it over and over.
The first time I really listened to the words was when she sang this song. She is an amazing performer. Her singing is simplistically beautiful.
You such an amazing strong beautiful girl , i am in my 80s and just adore you 😍😍😍 when i here you sing and see that beautiful generous soul 🙏🙏🙏 you bring me in my Winter years 😍😘🙏💓💓💓💓🌹👏👏👏🌹👍🏻
It was this song sung by KD Lang. it just knocked me over. It’s so beautiful and yes she sings it the best.
Comparison? No contest.
I was never so proud to know the world was watching kd....I watch this performance whenever I feel I need a lift.
I love KD since she was a child. She's funny, very sincere and of course that Amazing voice . Beautiful person..
I remember this because it was so powerful, beautiful and emotional. Nobody has or ever will sing this as beautifully.
this is why i watch reaction videos: as an empath, watching another empath be overwhelmed by the power of music, delivered by a performer who transcends ego to impart the music's message, means i get to experience it like it's the first time all over again, over and over
thanks for that, it's food for the soul, like kd herself
She takes your breath away! She sings from her soul. Look, everyone was quite, respecting the song and her voice.
All of us have CRIED for someone who did'n't feel the same and I believe she conveys that in this MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE! I LOVE her Shadowland album and played it a million times!
-San Francisco fan girl
I've been a fan of kd lang's since the late 80's and she can still make me weep. She is a singular talent.
Her performance of Hallelujah at the 2005 Juno Awards was epic.
'HALLELUJAH" was written by Leonard Cohen. I heard KD Lang perform it in Montreal, and it was quite memorable...perhaps the best cover of this song I've heard.
Thank you, this attributing it to 'Roy' was triggeringme as a Canadian lol
I love and adore kd lang. She's incredible. She'll be performing at the CCMA Awards on September 14, 2024 in Edmonton, Alberta. She's reuniting with her old band. Apparently she's really looking forward to it. I read that it will air on CTV here in Canada.
KD Lang is absolutely amazing. I have all of her CDs. Olympic theme, listen to Josh Grobin - a different kind of amazing.
I agree,, KD Lang is phenomenal ! Proud fellow Canadian here !
Hers is my favorite cover ever!!
She said in an interview that, shortly before she went on stage, she was made aware of the death earlier that day of Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritishvili, during a training run. She said the emotion from hearing that sorrowful news affected her performance. I think you can hear it in her voice.
OMG! I never heard that!
❤❤❤THIS IS EPIC!!! Wonderful performance of KD LANG!!!
Check out Pentatonic. They are an A Capella Group. They sing this Song with No Instruments, Just their Voices. 🥰
If you have time to explore kd’s music.. please watch her video of Constant Craving. She also has several other videos of her singing Hallelujah, including one in which she’s singing it for Leonard Cohen at an awards show. I believe that is when he said that the song was now hers.. he would not sing it again!
One of the biggest thrills of my life was listening to kd in a small venue in Boone, NC. Took my breath away!
Leonard knew k.d. had been asked to perform, and he apparently suggested they ask her to sing Hallelujah saying, "it's k.d.'s song now, what more do you need?"
I cannot ever listen to k.d. sing Hallelujah without completely breaking down into a flood of tears. No other performance of Hallelujsh by any other artist, and I've heard dozens and dozens of renditions, has this impact on me. I think Mr Cohen was correct, it is k.d. Lang's song now.
Am so thrilled Nick you appreciate K D as we do. The younger generation is now learning what real music is that touches your soul
I saw her sing in Glasgow many years ago, perfect voice , blessings from Glasgow, great reaction, I'm crying too
