      Mocking and insulting someone technically is still an ad hom but it's only a fallacy if the brunt of the argument or response rests on it, otherwise it's just extremely immature. I don't know how anyone can consider this as a good showing by either side, and it certainly didn't accomplish what debates are intended to accomplish. Destiny gets points not because he did well, but because Striker came in ill prepared, misspoke many times, improperly made his points, and failed to back them up. Both sides were dishonest but Destiny was far more deceitful in his representation of the actual information showing he didn't care about the actual point being made, he just cared about trying to frame Striker as a stupid liar on everything (which Striker made it VERY easy for him to do). His knowledge on many of these subjects was facile at best and he pretended to be an expert by regurgitating the affirmative about how, for example, the Fed and corporate debt operate in a Keynesian theoretical market model while ignoring the real world factors such as sociological impact and limiting factors, the point Striker tried to make but failed to communicate properly (because he obviously didn't prepare due to arrogance and spending his time in an echo chamber). I agree with Striker on his many of his positions which makes it infuriating how poorly he made the cases for them, and how he basically just whined at Destiny instead of using numerous opportunities which were open to him to show how Destiny was arguing in bad faith and missing the big picture (especially with his orthodox neo-liberal views on economics and political interference). The very premises Destiny accepts are wrong and getting into the weeds on many of these subjects was unproductive and painful as a listener. I wish Striker would have either prepared or simply kept his mouth shut.

      ryan thompson Compare Mars the Planet to Giant Steps. Flight of the Bumblebee to Rap God. In The Hall of the Mountain King to Sprites and Scary Momsters.
      They're not straight comparisons, as they work of different sets of principles, but let's try.
      I'm no music major, but there can be said to be five characteristics of classical music. Elegance and balance, question and answer phrases, diatonic harmonies, usually with the accompaniment at the same rhythm as the melody, and contrasting moods.
      What are some characteristics that John Coltrane, Eminem, and Skrillex share?
      I mean, dubstep can supposedly be traced back to Jamaica, rap has a pretty direct connection to blacks in America, he Coltraine is black. Got any others?

      @@DylanRoth1860 No? Didn't claim that. That's like, and I don't believe this is a hyperbole, comparing Banskie and Bob Ross.
      Eminems songs have a value that doesn't lie in the harmony.
      Where Bach drags out emotions from tones and chords elaborately designed, Eminem is capable of doing something similar using his words. I don't think either are inferior. Here, simple is not an insult.
      I'll take this to a third form of art. You can make an excellent dish with artfully seared wagyu steak and toast, or by controlling the chemical composition and temperature of a mango purèe on some fine chocolate... Or whatever. I'm also not a chef.
      Eminems topics may be more complicated than you may believe. The desire to hurt someone you love? The deepest, darkest, fleeting thoughts that some of us have; are we monsters for them? Or is it the natural human condition?

      @@asai3132 also, to add on to the other guys explanation, if unemployment is 0% that means you are stuck with your current job for life. Even if its a job you hate and want to game end due to. This is because since unemployment is 0, every other job in society is more or less fulfilled. It would be trying to find a needle in a haystack to find any kind of vacant position. 0% is bad for employers, and bad for employees. There's added stuff like, if every job is fulfilled, then companies would have to keep workers staying at their company not with the interest of work itself, but by competitive wages, and increasing wages would cause an increase in cost of goods for the average consumer since any company would raise the price of their products to make up the difference made in wage increases. As every company raises wages competitively, costs of goods rises, it eventually results in that society being unlivable for anyone who is not well off. I read in a paper that an economy showing 0% or close to it unemployment is "burning alive"

    • @mechano6505
      @mechano6505 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      @@boredphilosopher4254Theoretically they can still poach workers from other firms, but it's likely to cause a wage-price spiral where labour is so scarce to retain or gain workers you need to pay more and more, which then causes inflation since everyone has more money without more stuff that money buys, which then makes companies uncompetitive and unable to expand which crashes the economy. In most cases banks overhype how much it plays into inflation but 0% unemployment would make it a very scary reality.

      Destiny also had retarded takes on classical music though. For example when Eric Striker was arguing that musicians like Limp Bizkit were quick to be forgotten whilst Beethoven stood the test of time really well, he made a legitimate point, and yet it was quickly dismissed by Destiny through the "argument" that nobody cares about Beethoven anymore. Its completely wrong and counterfactual. You hear the works of Beethoven played throughout funerals, large events, religious events, advertisements, film soundtracks, TV show soundtracks, anime soundtracks, and even God damn porn video soundtracks, and at last his 9th symphony was also engraved on the Voyager Golden Record, and so it is certain the man is far from forgotten and will very likely continue to stand the test of time better than most modern musicians.

    • @sorryifoldcomment8596
      @sorryifoldcomment8596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      My opinion: I disagree. I don't think you are on the same page and you've over simplified it, by removing the context: the claims he's actually responding to. Destiny isn't arguing that "Beethoven is literally not apart of culture, full stop." That wasn't the claim he was responding to; he was responding to the claim that classical music is *dominant* in culture. I think that in this specific (stupid, purposefully unhelpful) example the guy chose, he's claiming Beethoven is *as big* as Kanye right now, financially, apart of "high culture" today, etc. (Which is not true.) I think your comment is unfair because it neglects this context. The guy is not just claiming "Beethoven is apart of culture," ..because Beethoven obviously is. This guy is crazy, though.
      Therefore, it's trying to apply Destiny's argument to a claim that Destiny wasn't really responding to. That's why it's not a good argument.
      The argument is not that Beethoven is not apart of culture.
      The argument is that Beethoven is not "high culture" in the sense that it's not *above* modern music. Something I don't know how someone could actually claim. Just look at who is most discussed and paid for by everyone in our culture. .
      When it comes to the industry, of course people are still making a living playing classical music. But, as someone who actually has experience in it, people aren't turning out to support many orchestras playing Beethoven. It's honestly insulting to struggling classical musicians. People aren't buying Beethoven anymore, that's the facts. Beethoven is played in the background of scenes and events, yes. (Remember that his music is free, that's also important.)
      Other factor:
      None of us know how well known Beethoven will be after everyone who is alive right now has died. Same with other music, or anything alive today. Tangent, but "Timelessness" is not a solid foundation for any argument, imo. I've started trying to avoid it. It's just too risky, because anything can happen.
      (To be clear, again, I do think of course classical music is a huge part of culture. But, it's not competing with modern music on the same stage.)
      Those are my thoughts. Now that I've watched hours of this conversation, my brain is scrambled. So I might honestly be mistaken about what was going on. (I'm also trying to not trigger/offend anyone by sounding like I'm offended.)

My OPINION is that classical music is much more enjoyable and complex than most forms of modern music.

    • @dragondynastywarrior506
      @dragondynastywarrior506 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@sethjeppson5680 Precisely. It is subjective. Though I think what he meant when he says "it's boring" is that it is not popular with the general public, as other forms of music can be considered (albeit subjectively) more "fun". I think we can agree that most people probably do not go to festivals, clubs, or bars, or even house parties, for classical music. And in regards to the variety of sounds, he probably refers to innovation and creativity. With modern instruments and technology, as well as variations in vocal style and lyrics, new dimensions can be explored, whereas classical music will generally be stagnant. I can certainly appreciate classical music, but to me, it has its place, and that place is not in my record collection. In my opinion, complex/technical music does not necessarily = good, fun, meaningful or creative.

      Your city's symphony consists of a minimum of 51 musicians, more likely bumping up to 100. They on average can play two shows a week, with a gap between June-September. So about sixty shows. Plus each show at this point for various reasons requires an out of town guest musician too. His misconception is pretty understandable, though blatantly false. Failed music major here like destiny, specifically studied Jazz Saxophone. Jazz is often played against order, or what is expected, but not only is it therefore first based in order so it can play against that established order, but it most certainly builds and has it's own order. Dissonant and unexpected notes, while against the original developed order of musical theory, are still designed to evoke a response in the listener, and simply play off of a different and more subconscious form of music.
      To an extent, improvisational music, jazz, and players like Jimi Hendrix, use the fact that what they're playing doesn't have a previously agreed upon meaning to make a more meaningful dialogue between performer and audience. Because the musical statements are formed off the top of the head, and are non-standard and less explored, their emotional response is more unique, intriguing, and engaging.

      As a guy from a European country with friends and family from other European countries, American nazis claiming that there is some kind of European culture or whatever is the most annoying thing in the world. If you take 2 neighboring countries in Europe, the cultures are often so different that there aren't even many or any comparisons to be made, even if they speak the same language. I'm from the Netherlands and one of my parents is from Belgium where they also speak a variety of Dutch, yet the cultures are so different I don't think it's even possible for an American who's never lived outside the US to comprehend, or anyone who's never lived outside their country really. There are so many aspects of your daily life that you don't even realize are part of your culture, it's impossible to know if you've never experienced someone from another country doing that specific thing differently or not at all, it's called the Dunning Kruger effect. Language and dialect just happens to stand out because it's so noticeable, but that's just one tiny aspect of your day to day life. And even within countries the cultures can vary quite widely, in the 19th century before education in French became mandatory in France, over half the country didn't even speak French, for example. I do think Europeans have a sense of "the west" but that's just pretty meaningless, it mostly means being relatively rich and liberal, before 1990 half of Europe wouldn't even be considered "the west." But in the end of the day all culture really boils down to is superficial stuff that doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things, in the end what's most important about another person is if they have the same general interests and mindset as you, and those things aren't culture bound, that's why you can have friends from other cultures, no matter which, almost just as easily as from your own, depending on the person.

      @fivelfivel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      ReddoFreddo 100% agree, we even often differentiate ourselves in terms of coming from north and south in Scandinavian countries, even more so than say nationality. Take for example parts of Sweden and Denmark have more in common (even dialect wise) than say someone from north or even middle of Sweden. We have such wide differences within our countries that the concept of “european” is nothing more than a continent on a map. Our whole history is so much more complex than just adhering to our current nationality, and I’m not always sure some American’s with such a young country grasp this.

    • @ReddoFreddo
      @ReddoFreddo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@fivelfivel Europeans who've never really experienced other cultures do this too with minorities within their country, so this is actually not just an American Nazi thing, European Nazis probably do it too. My point is that it's almost impossible to find similarities between white people in Italy and Finland, for example, that you won't also find between people in Italy and Bangladesh. Basically "being white" doesn't mean anything in an international context, there is no pan-white identity, and that's why Nazis have to rally behind things like ancient Greek sculptures and Mozart, which are revered around the world, not just by white people, just like how it's not just black people that listen to jazz or Indian people that admire the Taj Mahal, sure it was made and influenced by the cultures of people that happened to be a certain color or race, but that doesn't mean it has anything to do with people that share the same color or race, but not the culture.

      @@ReddoFreddo I'm also from a European country and if you don't think traditional American culture has more in common with western Europe than it does with any other part of the world you just have no idea what you're talking about. America was always an extension of Europe ethnically with religious, cuisine, linguistic, festive and most other customs having elements of the culture of most European countries. Asian, African and other cultures were never a significant part of American cultures, even among African Americans. This is just obviously true and is common, foundational knowledge.
      It is only possible today for people to somehow be able to doubt this when there is a ruling and media class so hellbent on instructing the population with counterintuitive ideas about culture and civilisation. You look completely out of touch, almost like an Alien, saying that America was not traditionally a culturally European country

    (I like watching these old ones)
    Let’s assess some of Striker’s BS and weak positions.
    -Striker is pressured to explain the “sophistication-learning” required to enjoy outdated, outplayed classical music, which he claims defines it as “high-culture”.
    -Banks like Goldman-Sacks (idgaf how it’s spelt) are greedy and they escaped his master, Hitler, so Striker is mad at them!
    -Fun fact - I used to help people, back during the housing crisis, used Obama’s HARP assistance for BOA mortgages. It saved SO many people from getting foreclosed on. The only ones that would foreclose were people that ignored their delinquencies.
    -Striker continues w/ his financial conspiracy theories.
    -Striker thinks Airports have wide profit margins.
    -Striker thinks being “wrong” is his value-set.
    -Striker is xenophobic and calls it “Nationalism”.
    -Striker can’t conceptualize legal immigration.
    (It’s not even halfway through, I’ve made the point)

    Calling whole entire genres like jazz, rock, hip-hop, pop, etc... "not music" is the most idiotic and elitist thing someone could do. The richness and diverse texture of these genres should never be overstated just because they are "contemporary". I am willing to bet 300 years from now, the nazbols of the future will say that their music is not "real music" like how Frank Sinatra, Tupac and Hetfield were.
