      While I prefer practical effects over CGI' the film had a whole lot of both CGI and green screening even for some of there most beloved and popular scenes. The CGI while terrible in most other films is actually used effectively in Jurassic Park mostly because they had the will and determination to see that the movie was successful.

  • @kingv911
    @kingv911 9 ปีที่แล้ว +277

    Holy crap that looks real. CGI: eat your heart out!
    I have this gut feeling that modern audiences are getting CGI fatigue. I'm hopeful that practical effects become the norm again in modern movies whenever possible. They just look so much better and they age more gracefully. CGI from ten years ago already look pretty bad, whereas practical effects from 50 year old movies still holds up. Especially in movies where there is live action mixed with CGI -- I don't care how much money they throw at it, CGI characters and monsters always stick out like a sore thumb. Modern movies look like video game cut scenes. There is no charm anymore.

    • @skeletex
      @skeletex 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      This is a very typical view, saying that CGI looks bad. However it is not the CGI that looks bad, computer graphics are flawless. What you are seeing as "bad" is the compositing process of blending the CGI with the live action footage. Which is basically making sure that the lighting for the CGI character matches the lighting in the scene. Unfortunately, many movies of the 90's and early 2000's have "dated" CGI because the compositing process was made for theaters under certain lighting conditions and contrast settings. Which is why the DVD's of these movies seem to have different CGI than what you originally saw in theaters. The compositing process cannot take into account the huge lighting changes that occur when transferring these films to DVD or Blu-ray. So even today you will never get the same experience as you did in theaters. That is one of the drawbacks of CGI. Practical effects, obviously, will always look the same because they were filmed on the spot. There are some CGI characters who still look good to this day: dock ocks arms in spider-man 2 for example hold up very well. The aliens in District 9 hold up extremely well too. And there is a lot of CGI that audiences do not even know is there. The problem isn't the CGI, it is just a tool. The problem is the people that tend to over-use it. Practical effects can save the visual effects team a lot of time, and they can then use that time to polish visual effects. But studios demand more and more scenes with more visual effects, so these VFX studios can only polish so much, and do the best they can. The best films are the ones that strike a good balance between CGI and practical effects. Practical effects are fantastic for close-up shots and limited movement. But wider shots with more intense movement is close to impossible to do with practical effects. Especially with giant creatures and things that are out of this world, those can only be made with computer graphics. Some of the greatest characters have been brought to life with CGI, including the Rex in this film, Gollum in Lord of the Rings, Ceaser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Optimus Prime in Transformers, and the Tiger in Life of Pie. So remember, CGI is not your enemy, it is made by teams of people who work hard for hours and hours just as practical effects teams do. You just have to know how to use it. And by the way I love practical effects as well, and I agree that there should be more of them. But I wouldn't say to get rid of CGI altogether, that would be silly.

    • @kingv911
      @kingv911 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Spidey406 I don't think throwing all CGI out is a good idea either; I'd agree with almost everything you wrote. I just find that in pretty much any live action movie an all CGI character typically sticks out and uncanny valley kicks in. I think Caesar in Rise..Apes, Gollum, etc don't look good enough to pass reality test. They are definitely passable but I still feel like I'm watching an animation vs something real. There is no weight to them in the environment and they look too "rendered". CGI comes in very handy for backgrounds on live sets, such as on Boardwalk Empire to create an atmosphere that would be impossible or too costly to build. When used subtly I think it is fantastic and can really enhance the experience. Part of it is a matter of taste as well. My gripe is that in the last decade there has been an over reliance on it and a turn away from (many time) more realistic practical effects; which I think should be used if at all possible. Another pro for practical effects is that they often require less camera movement - which I prefer over modern movies that have every shot be some sweeping camera angle, which for me just reminds me that I'm watching a movie. CGI scenes often show too much just because they can, and they over stuff set pieces and overwhelm the visuals. I understand that CGI, done well, requires a lot of work, money, and know-how --- I just feel it is overused and often done distastefully.

    • @kingv911
      @kingv911 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Spidey406 I should also say that I feel the CGI used in Jurassic Park was really good and holds up much better than a lot of CGI from the last decade. The T-rex chasing the Jeep for example looks fantastic. However, I'm so glad they built this animatronic T-rex. Besides looking great, it is just an amazing real, physical creation. I can't imagine how it must have been for the actors and crew on set -- it'd be like acting with a rel T-rex. I notice in a lot of movies with a real actor and a CGI character that it is blatantly obvious that the actor was having to pretend they were looking at something when in reality were standing in front of a green screen staring at a tennis ball or something. The line of sight of the actor never feels quite right with what they are supposed to be looking at.

    • @skeletex
      @skeletex 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      kingv911 True that. I agree. Actually having the physical objects, creatures, etc. is very special. And you are right about the abuse of certain camera movements, angles etc. And yes, really the trick to good CGI is focus. Jurassic Park I believe has only a couple of minutes of CGI tops. But most of it is extremely polished. And I think it is a matter of taste. I would argue that even with some of the best practical effects you can always tell it is a special effect. As with some of the best CGI. I've learned to disconnect myself from that and just enjoy it. I can always spot the CGI, but it is still very fun to watch. But yes, balance is key, and some movies are getting very out of hand with what tools they use, when and how much. I do believe there will be a resurgence of practical effects at some point. (When a good enough movie comes out, is popular enough, makes a lot of money, and just so happened to use a lot of practical effects). There are examples of this already in recent times, but it needs to be something like Avatar, where EVERYONE knows about it, or has seen it. You know what I mean? Until then we can only hope. But I am still a fan of some CGI characters, and I understand if you are not. That's cool.

      Animatronics cost more than CGI along with the very high chance of failure in building it ALONG with the environment getting in the way AND the actors working with it. I honestly don't enjoy CGI if its way too noticeable (Michael Bay's Transformers, looking at you), but CGI is "overused" because it's a reliable method to create otherwise impossible scenes. It's not just put there because directors are lazy.

      I've always wondered if a full size animatronic could stand on two legs and have a robotic that could balance it self, and be operated by a person inside the animatronic. So for example a person would be inside the animatronic, covered in sensors that control facial and full body movement, thus eliminating the need for cgi in a Jurassic park movie. The person inside would have an assist when it comes to moving, think of ripley and the power loader or the yeager's in pacific Rim.
      It would be a tremendous undertaking, but to get to see a puppeteer moving a 15 foot tall 8 ton, 45 foot animatronic freely with no cable assist would be a game changer.

      John Viking I'm pretty sure they clarified that there's a moment where the first time the T rex nudges the car really hard, they scream and you can hear breaking glass because it broke THAT window. In the next shot it's not broken and was not meant to be. The glass roof was all staged and carefully choreographed for safety. The only thing I can think of is the fact that it cracked in 2 pieces might not have been intentional.
