    These videos are valuable not only for the documentation of the process and to give credit to all the people who made this come to life, but they're also incredibly valuable for other creators! While watching this, I had an epiphany for one of my own projects that I've been a bit stumped on--the spiral design for the neck and tail are genius!

      Ahoyhoy again, I'm not Joe, I'm his offspring, Michaela,. I rather appreciate old animatronics, without them we may not have had the robotics for some of the medical equipment we have today.

      Joe Iffert oh very nice well nice to meet you michaela. and thats wonderful that an artistic vision full of hardwork is now saving lives :D and yes old animatronics theres just something so special about them they give me that childhood feeling of wonder and fascination.

      Ahoyhoy! Me again, Michaela, Alias - GroenFan, I'm pretty new to TH-cam so I don't downrightly know if I'm replying to the right comment , but I feel the exact same way about animatronics, they just work better in live action films than CGI, no matter how cartoony they look , animatronics , especially if they have a bit of wear to them, just bring a character to life . CGI doesn't have that same characteristic of realism that animatronics do. I bet if filmmakers put their minds to it, especially science technology has progressed this much, could build amazing life-like animatronics out of the old ones just sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Technology can be good, people should use the advancements they've made for good instead of evil and greed. Oh, and thanks for your reply, it really made my day knowing there's other people who still enjoy old technology . - GroenFan. Post script: i am making a very artistic video on my beloved pet cavy, Alfina , whom I had to give up because of my serious allergies to her, the video is under Alfina Clausen Iffert . I have other great videos on TH-cam of my visual gags I animated using cell animation . I know its kinda like CGI, but at least I don't intend on becoming an animator who sticks CGI into live action films. This P.S. is getting long and rambly so Later ! OH, Post Script Script : I forgot, the cell animation videos are under well, I forget, okay, just put Joe Iffert In your TH-cam search and they'll probably pop up! Anywhom, ta!

    I was 10 when this came out, and like every other 10-year-old, I was hooked. I had the "Making Of" book that I've read an embarrassing number of times, etc.
    The one thing I never had, and back then it was all about trade secrets, was footage and explanations. I've been loving these videos, but this one is pretty much my Zapruder film. Just that first shot of the tail moving, it made the whole character even more real to me. Thank you so much for bringing Stan's world to life for all of us.

    Given the mass amount of money Jurassic World has made already, wouldn't you agree that there's no financial reason that the sequel(s) to Jurassic World couldn't use mostly animatronic dinosaurs, as this movie did?

    • @platinum230
      @platinum230 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that would be very cool! I hope they make a full size T-Rex again. :D Sadly they didn't had one of those in Jurassic World. But its CGI was great though (they also used some animatronics so that's awesome). xD

      Platinum 230 It would be awesome!
      It's CGI was pretty great; unfortunately, it stuck out like a sore thumb in my eye - maybe that's just the artist in me. The massive screen probably didn't help keep it from looking too computer generated, either, haha. They did use one larger-scale animatronic, and then just smaller ones for the velociraptor heads in the holder-thingies. Wish there could'a been more indeed!

    I was blown away by your work on the Rex for this film. I had never seen hydraulics move with such fluidity. You were able to create the very small nuanced "Searching and thinking" movements for the rex. If Jaws were made today i would have loved to see what SWS could have done for a full sized hydraulically activated Great White Shark. Would you have been able to fully program a move and then repeat it exactly for each take?

I'm sure those CGI raptors from the new picture had a bit of work put into them, oh who am I joshin'? the damn computer monitors are the only ones doing their jobs these days. but this animatronic just fits in live action. even Splinter the rat and his adolescent reptiles were more believable than CGI! know why? because they were literally human on the inside, lifelike movement is a must for live action, and though they were not as well modeled as Rexie here, animatronics of any sort like ALF, and the Sinclair's just fit live action because they were actually in the room and existent in front of the camera. can CGI raptors do that? nope!

      It's made of foam and was in the rain during filming so it deteriorated. It's not built to last beyond the movie

      Julio Llanas I may be 4 years late, but, yeah, I think the T. Rex was around that size. They are gigantic creatures.

    With puppets you can get better texture and it fits better with environment do to pure light physics. But motion is still robotic and there's no avoiding that problem. Every time when shot was made with animatronics it's very obvious. Motion is stepped and nowhere near as curvy/natural as you get in CG animation or motion capture.
    What made JP possible and so successful was computer graphics. That scene when T-rex breaks the fence and you see his whole body moving left me jaw dropping. That scene alone had the most biggest impact on me in the history of cinema.
    If a was a producer, I would always go full CG, but I would force good post production to better blend models with the environment.
