The Lost World: Jurassic Park's Animatronic Raptors
FULL STORY here: bit.ly/JP123DinosYT
For THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, the dinosaur builders at Stan Winston Studio were determined to improve upon the groundbreaking velociraptor puppets they had created for #JurassicPark. Incorporating state-of-the-art fabrication technologies, ultra-realistic artistic finishes, and cutting-edge hydraulic performance control, the "Lost World" raptors again raised the bar for achievement in Practical Creature Effects.
In this exclusive video compilation from the SWS archives, you'll hear about the painstaking process from some of the team who made it possible, including raptor mechanics David Covarrubias, Rich Haugen & raptor artist David Monzingo.

FULL STORY here: bit.ly/JP123DinosYT - Adrienn
This, this right here, is what the Jurassic franchise needs more of!
Best raptors in the entire franchise. Those eyes are menacing.
I like the older eyes that were regular circles
@@animationspace8550 The First Jurassic Park Raptor eye's were slit pupils not circles.
I agree!
But incorrect
Why would lizards and birds have cat eyes?
@@gergopiroska5749 I get it, it's not scientific but then again, these aren't pure dinosaurs. These were incomplete and the DNA of other animals were used to complete them.
01:24 Wery realistic movement. My brain tells me its a real animal. Well done. This video gets 10/10
02:28 The raptors eyes + the neck movement = Perfection
Looks much more realistic than any cgi could
***** Agree but you can't do everything with animatronics. A running raptor for example would be very hard to do with this. That's why I love movies that combine the two techniques and know which one to use depending on the situation.
Captain Viggo Unfortunatelly, Jurassic World has not combined that techniques - I saw almost NO practical effects there. Colin Trevorrow never more!
Captain Viggo yeah that's why jurassic park series is so good! But jurassic world didn't seem to have cared about using animatronics except for the apatosaurus scene!
Filipe de Lima Santos yeah except that apatosaurus nothing is made of practical effects!
dilworth6113 There was also a raptor head. And "The End".
My favorite raptor design, absolutely beautiful and menacing.
Amazing how fluid the movement was, these guys were a master of their craft
holy hell that thing is really scary this is one of the best raptor animatronic i ever see it look so real
These raptors have been part of my childhood! :). I love seeing how they've made them. Great job!
I feel u!
Soooo fascinating. Animatronics should always prevail over CGI whenever it's possible. This raptor looks so real, so tangible that it will always provide a stronger emotional impact than the CGI would...
IMHO this is one of the best creature designs ever done
This footage alone looks better than the raptor in the new fallen trailer!
Why so much hate to cgi? Blue looks great in fk
They actually used animatronics in the new movie, including the scene where they were healing Blue.
@@jc0044 he isnt hateing dude he just personaly likes this better then cgi he probably likes cgi too just this better its his opinion dude
I personally like this technique better too
Disagree
Almost 20 years have passed and I continue to be amazed with all practical job made on this movie. Congratulations for the whole SWS team!
I coundn´t help noticed some others puppets on the background, like the stegosaurus and the paquicephalosaurus. I´m sure I´m not the only one having huge curiosity about those not-so-famous dinos from JPII, like "elvis" and the (walking) triceratops.
I believe showing the efford of those who designed and builted those creatures for just 20 seconds of screening time shound be entertaining for the public as well as gratifiyng for the artists.
I love the Raptors from The Lost World Jurassic Park.
It's amazing how intricate these are, especially the tongue and neck! You guys are fantastic, and I can't wait to see what Legacy Effects has done for Jurassic World!
Supertron This is precisely what i can't wait for too! :D
Hope so hard they did a job Stan would be proud of 🏆
Supertron too bad its all CGI then huh
zub7 Obviously you missed his comment below:
"No, it has been confirmed several times by Stan Winston School, Collin
Treverrow, and a few trailers that very impressive puppetry by Legacy
Effects is being used.
@2014
@2015

It's not "all CGI". Probably a whole lot more then in the first movie, but not only.
BENKO im gonna watch this shit heap on Thursday. I will report back with my findings on the distinct lack of animatronics.
Supertron I just went out of the movie and i have to admit, the only practical things that made it onto the screen were the Apatosaurus head and a piece of Indominus Rex meat. :(
The CGI though was stunning. And in my opinion they really managed it to recreate some of the Jurassic Park charm. In general i had a lot of fun watching it, although it wasn't as brilliant as the first two movies. So, if Jurassic Park is a 11 on a 0-10 scale, then Jurassic World would be a acceptable 6. Not mind-boggling, but definitely worth a watch and surely bang for the buck. At least for myself.
This transcends CG in every conceivable way. You instinctively know you are seeing a tangible object on screen rather than a simulation.
the spitter and volocerapter were my two favorite dinosaurs in these films, i loved them ever since i was a kid
I know it's anamatronic, and I know it's only on my phone screen. But I'm still relatively terrified. Amazing work.
Oh my, that raptor looks so real 😮
Amazing! I want one of those puppets in my bedroom!
6ril and wat will you do with it?
Tyranno dinolol Cry of joy.
As cool as it would be, it would give me nightmares eventually
thank you guys for the creation of my all time favorite version of the raptors, the lost world males. just something about the tiger color scheme just looks....awe inspiring. i even had a chance as a little kid to see one first hand and it absolutely terrified me at the time of 97 i was 3. still, thank you all for such an amazing and wonderful creation that still is and always will be, my favorite rendition. I do hope however....the male lost world and original raptors will make a return in future Jurassic World movies....
Did you have family members who worked with Stan Winston Studios at the time?
@@M1GarandMan3005 no actually. There was a thing were they had the animatronics at the wolf chase mall down in Memphis Tennessee back in 1997. I was 3 and my mother took me and one of her friends down there to spend the entire day there.
@@Dani-lf7lz That is so freaking cool!!! To think that they ended up all the way from LA to Memphis!
@@M1GarandMan3005 I think they may have been on your to promote the movie. I'm not for sure but it's all I could remember from being three at the time xD
This is something that should be designated national treasure. A modern one. Would be sad if this kind of art was lost to time.
Looks so much better than the CGI in the 'Jurassic World' trailer.
The CGI in _Jurassic World_ looks fantastic. ILM really is giving it all they got, and it shows.

I'm just tired of hearing people bashing CGI like it's the cool thing to do lately, as if it was the late nineties again when people were saying that all-CGI was the way to go and entirely ignore anything practical. As an effects aficionado and an animation student, it saddens me that nobody nowadays is willing to suspend their disbelief long enough to think past the fact that the CGI dinosaurs aren't actually there, just like how we have to suspend our disbelief to ignore the fact that with a puppet just behind the camera there is a man controlling the animatronic through pistons and cables.
***** actually they didnt thought CG would be meh in jurassic park, Steven didnt even considered CGI to begin with, he originally intended for Animatronics for Close ups and STOP-MOTION for full body shots (not CGI), he decided on CGI was he was given a test on how the dinosaurs would look in CGI, so Animatronics were decided long before they decided to use CGI dinos
nerdommeetsboy It may look cool but there is just so much you can do with animatronics...All they basically can do is just move slowly around a bit. Animatronics cant run, jump or fight and thats why its more or less replaced with CGI now... CGI can do things that animatronics never could.
***** Free running robots are still far from being able to imitate a living creature. There's a reason why all the "money shots" are still CG.
Ohhh man watching all of this takes me back to my childhood and that jurassic feeling I would always get watching these films!! Thank u guys for giving us awesome dino movies! 😊😢
This is the perfect blend of animatronics and creativity ❤️
Another masterpiece! These raptors from The Lost World are my favourites of any dinosaur. Iconic.
I've always been a fan of the tiger-like colors and stripes on the raptors, as seen in TLW.
I'm so happy I was around to see the JP movies in theaters back in the day, made my childhood special!
Stunning!
Wow!! This is fantastic!!
I actually think I want this suit so I could scare my friends and other people to see how fun it can be.
It is interesting as this was my favorite
this is absolutely amazing! i really wished all your videos would be much much longer and more detailed even. i would watch multiple hour long documentaries about the history of making these puppets!
So amazing. I love watching this stuff! :)
It's a damn shame that animatronics are almost completely abolished in Jurassic World. They should have used more animatronics in close shots and close middle shots.
I think the raptors in the scene where they're preparing to hunt the Indominus were models, but their eyes were plastered over with CG.
Your wish will be completed in jw2 now :)
Absolutely beautiful! 🦖❤️
You guys are amazing 😊👍👍✨
Amazing!!
They were the best raptors of the franchise!
Of course .🔥
One millon better that blue raptor
Very inspirational.
Where are the JP puppets today? Are they in a museum or something?
mitchell van eldik i have asked the guys at Stan WInston School and they said that a few non working ones have survived and are in museums or zoos. The rest where destroyed after filming
Adam Loring Yes, that's the truth. - Balázs
Adam Loring Destroyed :(
Stan Winston School Wtf, why?!
Evolution1101 common sense
great the lost world: jurassic park - revisting the raptors - behind the scenes !!!
This is amazing. It looks alive!
Beautiful!
love it!!
This is amazing
Woaah they look sooo real😍
So fascinating!
Such an unbelievably beautiful creation. Can't wait to see what Legacy Effects whipped up for Jurassic World!
Speechless explain
So beautiful.
Best Raptors in the series!
They look great.
perfekt, er wirkt echt. Macht weiter so.👍👍👍
E' Perfetto,fa' proprio tutti i movimenti !
Beyond astonishing 😲
Just wow
My favorite raptor variation.
Damn I wish I could buy that
you can't they have been destroyed
+whale on a yacht Muldoon got his wish then
Dum dum tsss
Can I buy one!!!! :D goodness the work on these are fantastic!
I don't think they are buyable.
So beautifull to see them coming ´a live´
It's looks realistic I loved it
they look sooo cool😆
It looks alive!!
Who let that damn raptor out on the set again?!!!
Sickest shit I ever seen man. Amazing
I wanna build one of these Raptors I love the lost world and the Raptors from that movie well I would not called them my favorite my favorite raptors are from the first movie but I love how realistic that animatronic looked if I wanted to build any animatronic dinosaur it would be a velociraptor
Can you do a behind the scenes of the JP 3 raptors? Those were my favorite because of their color scheme
+epicvideosedge1 You can find a lot of awesome behind the scenes videos from JP 3 as well. Click here and scroll down you mouse: bit.ly/RevisitJPDinos - Balázs
Imagine owning one of those things and pranking your friends and family by placing them outside their house
That would be the funniest prank ever especially at night lol
It' also very good vidio
That looks so real.
Es de admirar que continúan utilizando animatronics en las películas recientes pero en menor medida... excepto Jurassic world (2015) pero igual siguen luciendo increíble.
I love this raptor suits
i WISH i could get my hands on one of these
as a suit to wear
not even to wear it but to just have
How I hate CGI in jurassic World
I want them to bring the suits back lol
We all thought we were seeing exceptional CGI work, and it was Stan Winston's puppets.
I wish I had the velociraptor suits from the first movie
THE BEST RAPTOR IN THE FRANCHISE.
Thank god that the clever girls I met at Universal Studios Orlando were basically a replication of this sort of practicality, even with Jurassic World's CGI.
I miss those clever girls already, that's why I'm here. [-':
What is the thing called for the skeleton to move when a sensor of your hand moves?
They call it an endo skeleton and I don't know what youre talking about?
Looks way better then the Jurassic world raptors.
I want one
Practical effects are unique
I need one
I wish they kind of had a bigger role like in the novel.
Seria maravilloso tener un par de ellos para usar en Halloween o usarlos en un bosque y asustar ala gente
1:42 so cool
I think they were so advanced 30 years prior to 2024
The Lost World raptors are really similar to the original Jp raptor concept as well as the way the raptors were explained in Michael Crichton's novel. Wonder if that's intentional.
Lucía Perez yo quiero uno! aunque son bien creepies
22 years ago
When CGI was barely a thing
I stand by my words when I say that Lost World had the best effects out of all the movies.
TheGrayMysterious but what about jurassic park 1
The first Jurassic Park still has great effects, but I think the second improved on them in a lot of ways, such as more detailed CG textures for dinosaurs, smoother and more expressive animatronics, et cetera.
Imagine a world where dinosaurs are real
Jurassic Park: Um...that’s already happened.
Oh!
Plus that already happened 66 million years ago.
And they couldn't do this for the theme parks?!
i want one
Hola
I want that rapter!!!
Do they still have them they look so real they should have this in a ride
What is the skin made of? Someone please please please respond I only have two months left until Halloween and I'm make a Raptor suit and have no clue how to make the skin
I will subscribe to your channel if you can tell me anything helpful on how to make the skin.👍 thanks for the help
