Unbelievable, to me dinosaurs existed in 1993, the T-Rex in particular is probably the only fx that i have seen as a child and as an adult and never during the scene/action thought " this is so good or realistic" instead totally immersed in the scene without thinking about anything else, it just looks like there is a dinosaur in the damn movie.
Yup. Stan used to say, he didn't want people to come away saying ,"Amazing effect!" He wanted people to come away saying, "That movie was amazing!" - David

Over 20 years have gone by and this animatronic T-Rex is still the most awe inspiring creation I have ever seen in film, and maybe off film too. This is the first I've been able to see the process in which she was created, and I could sit through hours just watching this.
Now we know why it looks so life like. A huge animatronics robot! These were the days of a very interesting and brilliant people.

This is why Jurassic Park had better graphics in 1993 than it did in 2015.

time has moved on with SFX being replaced by CGI but to me suits , costumes animatronics win over CGI any day great job guys you made my child hood :)
Don't count SFX out yet, mika haken. There's a new generation of artists and filmmakers who are devoted to bringing back HANDCRAFTED creatures. "Real" monsters will never die!! -Matt

Erixon Cedeño There are things we can't do practically. It's about using all the tools in the toolbox to create the best product. Stan Winston created Digital Domain with James Cameron because he knew CG was a great tool, just not the only tool -Teresa
The thought and imagination that went into creating the hydraulic technology allow this to be built and operated so smoothly, it's simply amazing.
That was great. Still amazing to watch all these years later.

3 Frag Jag Except that almost. All of the t rex's scenes in the movie are cgi. The only part with the animatronic was the scene with it breaking the jeeps glass
I remember as a kid I went to the museum of science in Boston and they had the actual dinosaurs from the first Jurassic Park movie on display. I was such a big fan of the movie, being in the room with them was for sure the highlight of my year. Just amazing.
I'd give a LOT for being able to control this wonderful creation for just 2 minutes in my life. Absolutely amazing.

you know they placed a bit of CGI over the animatrontics, to make them look even more realistic right?
For full body shots were CGI/running shots. For Close up shots it was all the animatronics, they couldn't get close up details to look even remotely real with their CGI, specifically the skin. But from far away it worked a lot better...

There is a reason why this T-Rex is so iconic, while the CGI dinosaurs in the newer films feel so dime-a-dozen. I'm not gonna say that CGI doesn't require effort and can't look good, but it will never be as real as an actual, physical object in camera interacting with the cast.
One thing people seem not to think of it's that it's simply BETTER for the whole production to see practical effects on set. The actors react better, the DP lights better, because they don't have to IMAGINE what it is they're seeing. It's right there! Plus, it saves time on the back end. Sure, it may no longer be the solution to every problem, but it doesn't make it obsolete!
Stan Winston was a genius.
Id be playing with that thing all day. Non stop
What's really amazing is that all this tech and power needed to emulate the real thing, didn't come close to the real Dinosaur. This was a remote controlled prop and while groundbreaking and awesome the real thing had it's own brain, fully autonomous, no hydraulics, no batteries, no mount needed and lived for decades.
i was seven years old when i first saw this film in the theaters. im not kidding when i say the feeling of utter joy and amazement i felt when walking out of the cinema still carries with me. bravo gents and gentle ladies. bravo. after seeing this film my 11 year old brother went to bed with his roller bladeing pads, and bicycle helmet because he was convinced "raptors" were coming for him.
No need to say anymore than what everyone else has said. Greatest Character (Not creature) Ever. It was never an animatronic or an effect, the T-Rex and all other dinosaurs were all characters in my eyes. Jurassic Park will always remain my favorite film of all time.
I watched the movie again today, in 2023. 30 years later.
And it still holds up so well. The animatronics were and still are next level.
It makes a giant difference, that these Dinos were actually on set. They look so incredibly real because they WERE real.
Massive kudos to the workers that made it possible. I've got so much respect for the imagination, talent and craftsmanship.

In my opinion it's the most beautiful and dare I say elegant animatronic ever created for a movie.
I wish movies these days had more of these epic real life builds and less CGI
Jurassic Park, by far my favorite movie without a doubt. I was born a couple months before it was released in theatres. But I got a chance to see it in 3D at the theatre and I was not disappointed. Seeing a movie that I love, on the big screen and not on a TV screen, made me cry on the inside and I am 20 years old.
This is why Jurassic park is still the best and one of the most creative movies ever, never forgotten
Would it be too expensive to attempt something on this ambitious and on this scale today?? Its amazing you guys were able to pull this off back then.
Thank you for posting these videos! I recently watched Jurassic World and their dinosaurs seem and feel artificial. I rewatched Jurassic Park this afternoon and it still blows my mind. I'm not distracted by the special and practical effects, that T-Rex just attacked a jeep and those raptors are stalking the kids in the kitchen. 20+ years later I still get goosebumps. Thanks for the great times!

I've always thought the T Rex to be quite the elegant, intricate and loveable character of the Jurassic Park family. When she looks down, I imagine her looking down at her new born hatchlings, that motherly look in her beady eyes and snout. #rexyforever.
Alot of hard work is gone into this yet hardly any recognition. ..you guys bring the movie alive!

I had no idea it was anything quite this complex. I know CGI was out of the question for anything believable in that era, but I didn't think they did this much. Great videos. Behind the scenes have been proving to be more or at least as much interesting as the finished product.
Best movie of it's time. Better than titanic even.

Adam, This particular animatronic works so well because of a combination of things.
1) Having the world's best mechanical and hydraulic engineers on the team.
2) Staying away from pneumatic solutions, which can cause herky jerky movement.
3) Using accelerometers to cancel out the "Wagga-Wagga" shakes.
4) Great puppeteering.
5) Stan Winston was at the helm. ;)
And yes, we love Walking with Dinosaurs. They also use hydraulic technology to drive their puppets. -Matt
I think the effects in the original Jurassic Park hold up so well because of the realistic movements that the dinosaurs have. In the newer films, they act like monsters and jump around like they're weightless. In the original film, they move and act like animals which compliments the animatronics and CGI.
The trailer for Jurassic world looks cool, I heard that they are using a lot of practical effects. Can't wait to see them. I rewatched The first Jurassic Park the other night for the first time since I was about 8. I was amazed that I was thinking "HOLY SHIT THERE IS A T-REX OUTSIDE YOUR CAR" rather than "hey cool effects" which I usually think when seeing CGI.

A dinosaur fan since I was a kid, Jurassic Park truly bowled me over when I saw it for the first time and still holds up as a fantastic milestone of what kind of characters can be achieved through special effects. The JP T-Rex is everything I could have ever wanted from a realistic dinosaur; Not a movie monster, but a believable character. Stan Winston seemed like a truly remarkable person in every interview either with him or about him. I was saddened by his passing a few years back.

When the skin was added on i had to remind myself that it wasn’t a real T. rex. It moved so fluidly and looked so full of life i almost forgot that it was an animatronic.

I'm a student with the passion for drawing and arts in general. I've a lot of friend working in the science field, they frequently say that human beings could live without art but couldn't survive without science. Well, what's the point? When I see at this incredible piece of art and science I feel a shiver down my spine. This is so amazing, to see how science and art can work together and make dreams come to life... this is so close to magic, to the ancient dream of human kind of giving life to inanimate matter. As a child from the '90s, I grew up with the passion for dinosaurs, Jurassic Park was a sort of bibble for me. I wanna thank one by one all the amazing people who made this real, who make me firmly believe believe that there's a strong bond between art and science.
Irpina We humans did live for thousands of years without science - unless you count making fire and using basic tools as science (you can as well count them among the art of handicraft) - but already then we had wonderful artists who did really skilled paintings, carvings and statues. What kind of oral stories connected to them they told we can only imagine. But obviously art was important for them. Anyway, I don't see the point of trying to separate science and art or to ask which one is more important. Both are expressions of our humanity and are needed to make the society and us the individuals function. And science can be art and science is used to make art. If someone as a scientist feels the need to laugh at art, they aren't very intelligent people, no matter how many mathematical formulas they could solve.
I totally agree with you! Unfortunally around me there are so many people who strongly believe that art has less value than science. Both are amazing expressions of human nature, and we couldn't live without one of them... But so many people are convinced that art is less essential than science (for "practical" reasons).
The art of animatronic, in my opinion, is a perfect and clear example of how everything is strongly related, of how everything is so important and how stupid is to believe that there's a separation between art and science. Most of people try to "compartmentalized" the world, to ignore the connections, probably because it makes (apparently) easier to understand the reality.
Irpina As said, thinking like that doesn't show any real intelligence or wisdom on their part, rather need to put yourself up by pushing others down. It's like saying "heart is more important than eyes, because you can technically live without eyes but not without the heart." Uhm, yeah? You can also technically live paralyzed from your neck down, but is that a reason for bragging?
The whole T-Rex sequence was a work of art of a caliber that I'm suspecting I will never see again in my entire life.

I find it odd that movies are spending more money now but Jurrasic Park has had the best special effects ever since it was made. You should upload one on how the skin was made.

Idk about anyone else but watching these dinosaur videos is making me want to play ARK
Its an amazing animatronic, its what Jurassic World was lacking with the indominus, even the part where it breaks free out of tht pen and is sniffing the guy under the jeep. I felt no real tension because i could just see it was pure CGI. Jurassic Park 1 when that T-Rex is by the car where the kids are, thats was heart pounding stuff the first time i saw that a a kid.

Sorry, you won't convince me. There's no animatronics. What you did was bringing a real T-Rex back to life - because that thing is out of this world! Jurassic Park and The Lost World - Jurassic Park are the only movies who actually gave me nightmares. You guys are awesome! ❤️

Jurassic Park was the very first movie that I saw in cinema. I was sooo impressed by everything.. and of course by the incredible T-rex. You guys made a masterpiece!
It all looked and still looks so amazingly real! Nowadays CGI seems to take over, but this, making real lifesize animatronics, that is the real deal. I wish more movies would use animatronics more instead of CGI. Thank you for this fantastic work and I am definately gonna see it in cinema again, to relive my childhood again.
