Critical Role - Grog saves Taryon Darrington from the Krakken.. with a little motivation from Percy

- At this moment, Taryon Darrington is in a tight spot.. Grog goes out on a limb (all by his own choice?) to save his dear new friend.
Later on, Percy imforms him that he might have had something to do with the decision.

Not only did he completely miss the point/not care about what Percy was saying but he justified his actions to himself in the simplest terms possible, great character moment, travis is awesome

tristen dodder well grog has 7 int and is notoriously dumb as nails.
grog actually has an intelligence of just 6, which is where his famous saying comes from: "i have an intelligence of 6, i know what i'm doing!" - proceeds to do something dumb (if i remember it correctly)

This is one of those legendary dnd moments that gives you chills, and the best part is just how many of these moments grog has gotten
It's just unfair to the others how great of a RPer Travis is.
Brandon Galvan so I stumbled on this video a year later and I’m reading the comments and I come to this and I want to like it... but I already did... a year ago... and the sentiment still stands. Great comment Travis really turns into his characters it’s sooooo fucking good. Same maybe be a great strategery man (his words not mine) but it’s not easy to play dumb lol

When Travis asks for clarification if Percy simply yells "The Nitwit!" to Grog, Taliesin realizes what Travis is trying to do and you can see how excited he gets.
Taliesin has the most fun when he sets up elements of chaos for the rest of the party, and it's even better for him when it's unintentional.
Percy: "Have some seashells....." **hands Grog seashells** "And a skipping rock......" **hands skipping rock to Grog**
Grog: "Ohhh!"
Grog made it out with only 8 hp btw. It was definitely a close call
Loved how he said that he were fine when they asked him about it before. :)
And he healed for 9 with that tiny potion!
CXG44 he healed for 6, he rolled a 3 and a 1 plus the 2
If he hadn't that might've changed everything. Someone else may decide to do something and put themselves at risk all the while with the chance of losing Grog too. Good play by Travis

Tal and Travis were absolutely following what their characters would do which is awesome, but also Tal made sure Grog wasn't low on HP before he tried this, which is great from a IRL standpoint. Ofc Travis said he was fine when he wasn't really, but that's Travis LOL

Grog jumping back through the portal giving the finger was a part of Infinity War.
Travis is so dedicated to being in character that he's willing to do the least effective thing just cause it goes in line with what his character would do. That is some serious dedication

Laura Martin she felt so at fault for all of it. Of course the group wasn’t prepared for this battle. But she also wasn’t prepared to lead them. By her I mean Keyleth. She played it poorly with little regard for her friends until everyone was in danger
She had a habit of doing that in campaign of getting the group into fights that they are ready for
She's also very clearly had a bit much to drink
Jeffrey Ramos She was only preparing for a stealth mission which was why all her spells were for distractions and stuff because she never planned for it so yeah she rlly wasn’t prepared for that situation.
Marisha said that she had a really rough day before this session, and burst in to tears the moment it was over. I feel for her.

Remember, Grog was at 2 hit points at the end of that. 2 HIT POINTS!

I find it funny that grog takes a healing potion right before tarys death saving throw too instead of feeding it to him haha
Liam Williams Feeding a potion to someone else takes an action, all grog had left was a bonus. With that said, if it wasn't for Percy he totallllly woulda left tary in the dust

@@David_Blake91 Yes. To imbibe yourself. He had it ruled that since you had to focus more on actually making it go down their throat and not choke on it rather than drink it yourself it was an action

Well, I mean, when the Friends spell ends, the affected is meant to be angry that they had it cast on them, a balancing poison seeing as you can cast on anyone not actively hostile and attacking you with no saving throw. It’s an amazing social spell for talking your way out of a sticky situation.
That is why Travis’s response is so compelling, Grog knows he got manipulated but understands why he was and isn’t angry… whether it’s because the character trusts that Percy had a good reason, or that deep down Grog knows it was the right thing to do… either way it was an amazing how in tune Travis is with his character

Friends isn't a charm effect, it just gives you advantage on charisma checks.
Its not really a charm effect more like you become super charismatic and they are more likely to listen to you because of it

how did Grog get 24 points of damage with one hit? i have yet ot watch this full campagin but if i had to guess he has his titanstone knuckles by now and pushed them up so he has a strenght of 26, i think he said he got a 9 in damage and with all the bonuses it went up. so 9 damage, +8 from his strength, and 3 from his rage (if he's the level i think he is) that's 20, is the axe a +4? or did i read all this wrong and he just used greatweapon master and got up there with it?
They were like 15th level at this point

I’ve seen this in other clips but haven’t bothered to ask till now, how can Percy cast spells? Did he multiclass or does he have some kind of magic item?
Don't remember when, but I think he took magic initiate as a feat some time and gained access to some warlock spells.

magic initiate feat. Has friends and minor illusion cantrips, and hex spell 1/LR. Works with smoke monster theme

At this point there are at level 16 and are basically gods... but not in a goldfish way. :)
Most of the party was 16, i believe tarry was a level or two lower
Anyone know how they determined their lvl 1 stats?
They explain it in their Handbooker Halpern series, but iirc they roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die. Roll enough for to have 1 foreach stat, then assign the numbers where you want for your character build.

No. Im pretty sure Ukatoa is an eldritch horror. But unless we know which patron type fjord picked its hard to tell.
@@drsatanrx Fjord has a Hexblade patron, possibly with the Pact of the Blade. U'katoa (now the Wildmother) is just the entity channeling through the hexblade instead of the Raven Queen.
@@kaeleastlord hexblade is a warlock which has different patron types. Usually fae, otherworldly ie lovecraftian horror or fiend.

This was such a hard episode to watch. Being that drunk while RP'ing had some serious cringe moments.
Percy, very much more so Taliesin, was willing to sacrifice his close ally and friend for a guy they met without hesitation... Even if it was for a good cause that would basically have been Percy murdering him if Grog did not manage to pull himself out very luckily. /:
It didn't seem like he was sacrificing him, though. When asked about his health, Travis said Grog was okay. Grog being 'okay' sounds like he's maybe halfway down or a little lower on HP which would still mean he has more left than everyone else in the group. Percy probably thought that Grog would be able to get through another attack from the Kraken without getting close to passing out, which Percy wouldn't be able to do - Percy also had no way of actually defending himself against the Kraken. So they could leave Taryion behind - a guy they had a contract with and who had one of the stones that they needed to complete their mission - or Percy could run in and try to save him by himself and then there would be two passed out characters in there who both needed saving, or Grog - who was already near Taryion - could pick up Taryion on his way out and hopefully survive the attack from the Kraken - an attack he might have had to defend against whether he saved Tary or not (I don't know how much saving Tary slowed him down).
Also: If that means Percy could've murdered Grog, it also means that Grog could've murdered Tary - since Grog was just gonna leave him to the Kraken simply because he didn't care about him. Just saying.
@@Neko141212 IIRC, carrying/dragging someone (like the then-unconscious Taryon) reduces your max movement speed by half.
I don't think anyone but Travis knew how low Grog was at this point.

This episode is a point where Marisha realizes she got too drunk to play her character. You can tell by how little her face actually changes throughout the episode, except to get more flushed.
Keyleth was able to Wildshape into a Water Elemental at that point, yet for whatever reason what does Marisha try to have VM do?
Go and fight a fucking Kraken.
probably one of the most painful and frustrating episode to watch, grapple after grapple, marisha being drunk or high or whatever she was on that night, damn...
