    I have been cooking a 9-10 pound turkey in my 8qt. Instant Pot pressure cooker, several years, now. Like you I buy 2 turkeys a year. My Publix usually has turkeys for $.39 a pound. I do brown my turkey after cooking in the oven for about 10 minutes under the broiler. In total time with the browning my 10 pound turkey only took 55 minutes to cook. It was juicy and delicious. I have a daughter who absolutely loves turkey and is in heaven when I cook them this way. 😊❤️

    wow, I just ordered my Elite 10 quart pressure cooker yesterday and can hardly wait for it come. I got it off Amazon and it just happened to be the last one there and was red too. LOL. I can hardly wait to use some of your recipes with it. I have always wanted one because, i freeze a lot of my meat and hate to waist time thawing it. Could you come up with some recipes for single men. I know i can freeze leftovers but I do not have much room in my freezer. I love your shows, you, Rick, your children and the pets are great. My grandmother used to cook with the old style pressure cooker on the stove and when she cooked chicken she would always make chicken noodle soup.

    I have the Elite 10QT also and did the Turkey (12 lb.). I browned it at 450 in the oven for 30 min then pressure cooked it for only 25 minutes. Came out deliciously juicy, nicely browned, and the breast was still able to be sliced for sandwiches later as leftovers.

    Great job Noreen. I like that your videos get straight to the point and having a separate cameraman helps in the presentation so thanks to your hubby I assume also.

    I had a pressure cooker years ago...it had the little weight on the top which jiggled and hissed while it operated. I LOVED that thing. I made a meatball stew with veg and gravy in 15 minutes. Conversely, I was NEVER happy with my slow cookers. Love your recipes! Real food for real people!

    I have the same 10 qt pressure cooker but I separated the wings, legs, breast and back and cooked it in parts(12 lb turkey). Browned it under the over broiler first. Turned out great and could use the tongs to remove when done.

    We've been pressure-cooking turkeys in a big pressure canner for years. We did a 27-pound turkey in a pressure canner this year, at six minutes per pound. Years ago we simply got tired of spending 4 to 6 hours baking a traditional turkey and ending up with dry breast mean, which makes up probably half the turkey. Pressure cooking gives the entire turkey a juicy tenderness throughout the meat for all the elderly family members with dentures who have to fight eating a dry baked turkey... But it works and it's delicious...

  • @GhoulishCop
    @GhoulishCop 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The foil sling is genius! I've made numerous turkeys in my pressure cooker and could never figure out how to get the bird out. As you said, it's literally falling-off-the-bone done. The only thing I do differently is brown it in the cooker itself, putting a little oil on the bottom. It is a bit of a challenge getting the turkey all browned, but it makes clean up easier as there is only one pot to clean. I also pressure cooked mine for 30-40 min., but I based it on about 3 min. per pound. I also reused the bones to make turkey broth -- I ended up putting up 8 quarts of broth afterwards. Again, as you noted, 1-1/2 hrs. to cook a turkey mid-week "ain't bad!"

    Another one here with a little six quart cooker. I'm hoping Presto makes a ten quart model. Digital units don't do anything for me since I can't see the readout but a stovetop model would do the trick. I've done whole chickens in my little cooker and they've come out great. I'll try flash browning a hen next time I do a chicken in my cooker. Yummy.

    I've had a Nesco electric pressure cooker for over a year now and will NEVER be without one! Love how easy it makes cooking those "long time cooking" meals a snap. So easy to put roasts, chicken, veggies, etc. in the (toaster) oven to broil/brown then into the Nesco pressure cooker for a short time, then "beep-beep" - out comes a meal that would have taken all day! LOL .. it's also saved my buttons when I've forgotten to take things out of the freezer. Thank you for showing how easy it is to those who may not have considered getting one.

      I seriously doubt that the bird sans the legs will even fit in a 6 quart machine. I would consult the guide that came with your PC before even attempting a feat like this. Mine is 10 quarts, a gallon larger than yours. I would say you could safely do a large chicken, but a turkey I doubt would work.

    I am afraid to post this because you might yell at me lol. I bought the Elite, got a 12 pound turkey (Publix - frozen). I cooked it in the oven for 30min at 450 and the color was AWESOME - I wanted to serve it right then lol. I put it into the Elite, sling and all, and cooked it for 45 minutes and let it do the natural release. The white meat was pretty dry and crumbled easily.
    Okay, this is not a complaint, I am looking for what to try and adjust. the turkey was NOT a Butterball, but like a said it was Publix brand (local grocery store, but a large one). I used peach juice as the liquid, 3 cups. Did the butter and stuff before the oven.
    So, I want to know, was it the bird, or was it me ??? lol I am going to make another for Christmas, what would you do - so I can do it too :) By the way, I LOVE LOVE this machine, make babyback ribs i it, and WOW! Thanks a bunch ~Peter

    • @MyChannel-h7y
      @MyChannel-h7y  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PeterGregg I don't yell at people who ask logical and well thought out and well asked questions. It could have been your bird. I don't use Butterballs at all. I use the cheapest bird that is available. Sometimes I can get the "fresh" turkeys after the holiday when they have frozen them to extend the shelf life. My turkey was moist and flavorful. Next time reduce the time by 15 minutes. The worst that could happen is that you need to repressurize for more time. I am glad to hear you love this PC. I do too!

    • @joelooney158
      @joelooney158 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if the problem was the peach juice. I'd suggest trying again and using water or broth. And 1 to 1 and a half cups should do it. The peach juice may have been too thick. Just a thought as I can't imagine anything coming out of a pressure cooker being dry. Good Luck!

    We have a 22 lb bird sitting in the freezer because it was $6.12 three days after Thanksgiving. Couldn't pass up that deal. Alas my pressure cooker is not big enough to accommodate that size. What I should have done, since it was fresh bird, was break it down in to parts then freeze it. Live and learn.

      +Noreen's Kitchen Animal??? No, it's not electric lol, and it's not limited to electric, it can be used with gas or coals also and it cans meats very well,
      quart size too.
      I've had 13 years of service with it and counting, with no issues.
      When your buttons stop working or your heating element fails, I'll
      still be cooking, lol

    ok, I think I have taken the strip one step better. Further, my pressure cooker has a canning thing in the bottom, to prevent the glass from breaking. I am putting the strips under the canning thing to see if I can lift out the turnkey like that. ill let you know how it goes in about an hour. hint: DONT BE CHEAP ON THE STRIPS.
    also, before cooking, im just taking all the skin off and will cook it like an additional item in the oven in a cookie sheet with specific seasoning, etc.

    While I like electric convenience, I prefer manual pressure cookers. Why? In a blackout (I live in the midwest-storms), you can't use electric appliances. The same recipe will work in a manual. Great vid & recipe! Thank you. I plan to try it.

    • @MyChannel-h7y
      @MyChannel-h7y  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your points are valid, however if you have no power and an electric stove, that point is moot anyway. Additionally, there is a difference in the way you cook in a manual, stovetop pressure cooker and the way electronic versions work. I always encourage people who may not know this to do their research first and read the owners guide before proceeding with the assumption that they are the same. Thanks for commenting. Enjoy!

      Kiersten Paimli They no longer make the PC I have so I probably won't be doing a review. I know that Elite makes an 8 quart, but no longer has the 10 quart available. I am happy with this model and for the money it was a steal. I have also had the Wolfgang Puck version in the past and liked it as well. Problem with most of these appliances is that we use them a lot and they are just not built to last if you use them a lot. If you use yours a lot, plan on replacing every three to four years.

    We used to pressure cook chickens for our dogs food. Pressure cookers make the bones so soft they are eatable. There is so much nutrition for your dog's in those bones. Does it do the same with turkey bones?

    • @MyChannel-h7y
      @MyChannel-h7y  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not find the turkey bones to be soft enough to give my dogs. So I think it may depend on how long you process them for. In this case it was not.

    • @MyChannel-h7y
      @MyChannel-h7y  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This model says you "can" however, I would not trust it. Having had a good look at the recipes they recommend for it. It is quite evident that they are all high acid foods that would only require water bath canning. I would not trust it at all for anything that would need to be traditionally pressure canned because I cannot control the pressure gauge and I cannot see how the pressure is regulated. I would say that no this is not appropriate for canning. Go with the tried and true method for canning long term shelf stable foods.

    • @MyChannel-h7y
      @MyChannel-h7y  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you break it down a bit more it might help you to know just how big this vessel is. 10 quarts is 2 1/2 gallons! That's a lot of food, soup, chili, stew, etc. I think that this would easily make enough to feed nine people! Even have some leftovers. I made my Italian style chicken soup and ended up with enough soup for 4 meals for my family of 4. That is a total of 16 servings of soup. My 12 pound turkey would have been enough to feed 9 people. You can make a ton of pulled pork or chicken or spaghetti sauce or chili or any number of easy dishes in this cooker for that many people, even more most likely!

      Wonderful thank you. I use my crockpots a lot but sometimes forget till too late in the day to cook the meal I had planned that day. So I have a crazy question: I only have HUGE stove top pressure cooker. Is it possible to cook the bird in that? Yum-o recipe by the way. Keep them coming!

      Totally possible to cook in your stove pressure cooker. Frozen bird can cook in 90 mins. Trying to figure out how long to pressure cook a non frozen turkey??

    Does the breast meat have good flavor? I've always had better luck smushing salt and seasoning under the skin. Looks prettier on the skin, but doesn't seem to absorb it well.

    Try one cup chicken stock and one cup white wine

      You can feel free to do that. We do not like the flavor of wine. We don't like to drink it and we don't like to cook with it. We would prefer beer, which would also be good. Or bourbon, whichever.
