Just wait 'till you have to replace a failed oil pressure sensor...$800+ at the dealer, or a day or more in your driveway. For a $100 part that the Jeep engineers decided that under/inside the intake manifold would be a great place to locate it. So if you do it yourself, $100 bucks for the sensor, $100 bucks for a gasket set, possibly $50 bucks for a special tool to remove the sensor, possibly another $50 bucks for "specialty" sockets you don't happen to have, a whole lot of blood, sweat, tears, and...lots of cursing. Not a father/son project if you're prone to cursing:)

Thank you. The filter is so easily accessible, I will have to start doing this myself. I am especially appreciative of the instruction on how to reset the oil change alert.
Your son did a great job, too. Reward him with some dark or robust maple syrup. If he thinks the fresh oil is the color of maple syrup, he needs to try the good stuff!

Good job! Just bought my sons who is now stationed overseas. One bit of advice, always rub a thin coat of new oil around any o-rings or seals before installing a new filter. That makes for a better seal and prevents damaging a dry seal when tightening.

Good video, but a word of caution, be very careful not to overtighten the oil filter. It screws into a plastic oil cooler assembly which is mounted on top of the motor. Overtightening can cause the plastic oil cooler assembly to crack and that creates an oil leak. The cost to replace the oil cooler assembly runs $800-$1,000 at the dealer. This piece was redesigned starting with all 14 models with the 3.6 and the 3.2 and most of the ones on 14 models will fail on their on. I've already had to replace two oil cooler assemblies on my 14 Wrangler and my wife's 14 Cherokee. There are also torque specs for the oil filter.

Thanks Lech...our mobile onsite oil change guy is not available. We want to take off on a trip on Monday and just made that decision yesterday. Need to change the oil but I did not want to mess with the oil filter. Why? Because I did not realize the oil filter was on the top of the engine. I used to always change all of our vehicles but this one...long story...but I stopped a couple of years ago because I hated messing with the oil filter...this is so much simpler. You have saved me money.

@@HowToWithLech QUick update. I did change the oil last night on the 2016. We have the 2016 GC 75th Anniversary Edition. Not sure it is any different. The engine cover on our 2016 has a screw under the center cover which pops off of the main engine cover. It is both a hex bolt and has a star screw. Easy to remove and then only a couple rear snap locations. In this video it had 5 snap locations. All other aspects were identical. It made it so easy not messing with a filter under the Jeep...plus the filter drains off inside the cannister...so was very little mess when taking it out.

I believe they came with synthetic from the factory..specifically Pennzoil Platimum. Depends on year for weight. 2011 it was 5w-30, the new ones are 0W-20. I just know each year of the pentastar V6 they changed the oil weight, perhaps based on design changes.

The engine should be at a moderate temperature before draining the oil. The oil should be left to drain completely. Wow did you really put that plug back in before all the oil was drained out that was still draining quite a bit I've done all changes on quite a few vehicles in my time and if it still drain that much there still a good bit of oil that is old left in there , I don't agree with that at all!!!!! If you are watching this video to learn how to change your oil please do not do that with your own vehicle allow it to completely drain out to where it is Flowing no longer!

I'm with you...I let the oil drain until it's just dripping. There are other things you can do while your waiting. Top off the washer fluid, antifreeze, check the belt, check the power steering fluid, check or replace the air filter.

I just watched this to make sure I had the correct sized socket and that’s the only (yet pretty critical) thing he did wrong. Dude... there’s still a toddler sized pee stream of oil coming out. Just give it 5-10 more minutes.

Yes good to have the oil warm. Drains out better. But let car cool down a little first so you don’t burn yourself.

You have to let is settle for a while after running car. Also we just put the required amount so it’s at max with no burnoff. But yea always check after car cools off
