I want to thank you for making this video. I'm a 60 yo widower, Who lives next door to a widowed woman in her 60's who has one of these 2014 jeep. She, like me is on a fixed income, and can't afford the shops to do this task. So, I'm going to do it for her and I just wanted to make sure I don't do anything wrong. Once again, thank you.
I haven't even finished the video yet but had to comment. This is quite possibly one of the best and most thorough videos explaining each and every step for basic maintenance which is EXCELLENT. Everything from what to do with the old parts to how and where to jack up the car is perfect. Thanks so much for putting this video together.
My mom has a 2011 Grand Cherokee and I looked this up to make sure there wasn’t anything different I would have to do from an older vehicle. Very informative, thank you!
Excellent video. Very informative but I have to tell you I have never seen anyone tighten down an oil filter so much. I was just waiting to hear that plastic filter cover crack.
I finally got a chance to change the oil in my 2015 JGC today. I found your video awhile ago and favorited it so that I could reference it when/if I needed to. I was able to get all the necessary tools before the job (especially the socket for the filter housing). I'm not new to DIY oil, however this was the first oil change for my JGC (first vehicle other than a Honda). I appreciate you taking the time to put this together. It really helped me out.
Awesome video. I inherited a 2012 jeep grand Cherokee from my grandmother after she passed, and it sat for a couple years before I could get it on the road again, but it’s a great vehicle still. This guide was super helpful and made the oil change easy as pie. My dad did the work of course lol (bc I’m a millennial and i work with computers for a living) but this video cleared up the questions he had about the Jeep, so thanks for your work!
FINALLY.. a person that wrenches with care. My brother. I would bring you my car. And that's coming from a person that hasnt gone to a mechanic since I was 16, except for tire changes and one A/C recycle (to do my own compressor change). Thanks for the thorough tips amigo.
Great video. One tip, if you don't open want that rush of oil to splash all over the place when you first take the drain plug off DO NOT open the filter housing or oil fill plug before taking off the drain plug. After you open the drain plug then open the fill plug and housing. Also Mobile 1 full syn FTW.
BSG thanks for showing how its done, easy to follow. Getting ready to change oil first time on 15 grand cherokee 3.6 114k miles, had 1 week now and have 6 qts pennzoil high mile ultra plat 5w-30, in summer where average high 90 then back to 5w20 for the cooler months. Don't have a mopar oil filter but have a a-c delco, should be good 3 to 5k miles.
This is one of my favorite "go to" guys for car repair before I fix something. He's the FordTechMakuloco guy also. do it the way he says to do it. BTW.. you saved me $$$$$ when I had to get the plugs out of my 5.4 3V Ford engine. Thank you so much.
Great video; really good instruction. Many thanks. This is my first Mopar with that cartridge filter. For the 2017 Pacifica, the cartridge filter is on the passenger side of the engine midway to the back on the top of the engine. 24mm socket on ½ drive racket with 6" extension. There's a trap door on the under carriage to access the oil pan drain plug with 12mm bolt head. ⅜ drive ratchet with 13mm socket or 13mm box end wrench. Thumbs up for your vid!
Wasn't I glad to see your face when I clicked this video, been watching you're other channel for a while always informative with my research. Wife just purchased 2016 Grand Cherokee, getting ready to do first oil change and wanted to see what I was in for with Jeep. You showed a very simple process in great detail. So happy to see you will be around for this car. Best of luck with this channel.
Thanks for the helpful info and tips. I found it easier to turn the wheels to the left and slide between the wheel and the passenger door to access the pan. I hate jacking up the vehicle.
Great video. Just a quick note: you can scroll through the menu on the dashboard after you reset the oil life monitor to get to the oil life screen. When I get down to 33% oil life, that when I change my oil. I use ramps instead of jacks just because I feel safer that way, but jacks are fine. I've been using Penzoil full synthetic and with the filter it costs less than $40. An oil change place would charge $100+ and try to upsell me everything in the book. And forget about what the dealer would charge.
my only comment is that instead of letting the engine drain for 5 minutes you can also use some of the new oil to fully drain all the old gunk out. i normally use 6 3/4 quarts in my ram with 1/4 qt of lucas oil additive. the 1/4 of oil is what i use to assist in the draining. seems uncommon but i find my vehicles always run very smooth and i like to see the plug hole drip clean oil vs dirty gunk before its plugged.
That jeep more than likely is going to need a new oil cooler or filter housing now because of leaks caused by cracking the plastic housing.....dont ask me why I know just trust me
I cringed when I saw that part because my sister just replaced hers on her 2014 GC 3.6. I will be changing her oil this week and I’m going to see how tight it is from install.
At 6:46, you can let it drain longer, but consider also that if it is a windy day, then that wisp of oil may also blow all over the driveway regardless of how carefully you cave positioned the drain pan. Tradeoffs with any decision.
I am a Ford 2 valve , 3 valve, & 3.8 v6 owner so the Jeep era is new to me due to my gf car lol I appreciate your videos as always, just subscribed to this channel as well! Greetings & cheers!
Great video. Perfect actually. I just finished warranty and plan to do mine in a week...first vehicle I've had with a filter like this, much better using a socket than the damn filter wrenches!
Great video! Just a suggestion, but a 1/2 6 point is actually a little bit more snug on the drain plug. Or at least on the 2015 Grand Cherokee Laredo oil that I changed.
If you live near Brian in the Chicagoland IL. area you should give him a call for your automotive needs. He is an awesome mechanic. I have been a fan of his for a few years. His TH-cam videos have helped me tremendously on my 2004 Ford Explorer. I just wish he lived near me in the Long Island, NY area.
Great job. You gave me the directions and tips I was looking for. I have the same vehicle and would have made a mess if I hadn't watched this first. THUMBS UP!
Great video , will be very helpful when I service my Jeep Grand Cherokee for the first time. Would you happen to have a video on changing the EGR on the same vehicle?
6qts instead of 5 like my old JGC...what a pain! I hate spending $7 on the separate quart bottle. Buying a 5qt jug and calling it a day was nice. This style oil filter sure was nice. Thanks for the video!
Mark B I buy two 5qt jugs then pour off one qt extra for the fill. Then I have extra oil for future changes. The oil companies make enough profit and charge ridiculous for a single quart...sheesh. 😏
@@ZathrusGizmo123 Thanks. Could be a dumb question, but does oil go bad after sitting that long after opened? The last qt of the 5qt jug will be years old by the time it's used up.
Thanks for the video. I like the details and the idea of removing the whole engine cover not just the filter cover. My question: how many liters should I add?
3000 or 5000 in a modern car is pointless, even most conventionals can go 7500 unless you short trip in cold weather, follow what the owners manual says...
I have a question, is there any special reason why you don't just put the used oil in the jugs that the oil comes in, it seems like that would be somewhat easier, just label it as such
+camtheham13 I don't fill individual 1qt containers it makes for a huge mess and I have large containers around the shop for oil collection all the time
I buy my oil by the 5 QT containers. It's just easier and for most times times it's slightly cheaper. I save the containers to use as old oil containers for recycling. I don't get any money for it but I don't have to pay to get rid of it either so it's an even wash for me. Great video Brian. Thanks for hosting this.
You dont need to lift the vehicle, the drain plug can be reached just fine from the from to the Cherokee. Also there is absolutely no need to use petroleum based break-in oils on new factory engines. Engines break in over a period of time anyway. Just change the oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles. Seriously stick with the factory oil suggestion.
i have a question? or wondering if you could do a video on replacing spark plugs on a 2013 jeep g cherokee.. i will need my plugs replaced soon and i will like to know exactly where they are located before i put hands on it.. thanks
Just one question, I have been told, do not over tighten the oil filter housing cap, can crack the housing. You seemed to over tighten this cap, being a side o-ring seal, that is what does the sealing, so no need to over tighten cap, doesn't improve sealing at all. Not sure if this is correct, please let me know.
Just need to snug it up, thaey can take quite a bit of torque without an issue. The oil cooler below that it attaches to is the leak point you need to be worried about.
I use a 5 Gallon kerosene can.You can get them in some auto parts stores you don't have to take right away to the recycle center after an oil change.Plus they have a handle on the top to make them easy to carry.BTW,you can tell Jeep is a Chrysler Product by that starter sound. But I hear Chrysler starters are better than most, but that's a rumor.
I read somewhere that after refilling the diesels with oil you should wait about 30 min b4 starting it because oil takes a long time to make its way all the way through the 3.0 engine. Is this true?
From what have seen on other videos and my own car is the 11-13 have the solid bolt design on the oil filter housing cap and the 14+ has the 6 spoke hollow bolt design on the oil filter housing cap and use the updated filter with the nipple at the bottom?
Although 5w30 is acceptable, I am still skeptical on how well it works with the slinger on the camshaft ahead of the PCV valve. And, remember also these engines have a solenoid on the oil pump that helps meter oilflow and pressure. I have a 13 and started using 5w30 in it as it has right at 200,000 miles now and I am sure the bearing clearances are slightly more, as well as piston to cylinder clearance. It does run a little cooler oil temps as well when towing.
I don't know if it's on certain years but according to the user manual, for the 3.6 V6 you're supposed to use 5W30, the 5W20 is for the V8. Now like I said I don't know if it's for certain years but mine is a 2012
My wife's 2013 JGC owners manual, page 634, says to use SAE 5W-20 for both the 3.6L & 5.7L engines. Also, when I search Mopar site for the oil filter it states Mopar (68079744AD),which is Mo-744, not the Mo-344 mentioned in the video. Excellent video by-the-way.@@RogueStormCB13
Great video , explained everything to a T. I do have a question about the drain plug. I've done many oil changes on different vehicles, but my 2014 JGC is the first one were there was no drain plug washer. Is this OK ? Thanks
I was hoping you would give some info on what would happen if the small o ring at the tip was missing, what effect would it have on the engine? I think you may have tightened that hosing a little to tight!!
I have a 2013 GC overland with the powered liftgate. How can I open the liftgate manually in case if there is a problem and the liftgate cannot be opened by remote and by the handle and I want to replace the electric lifter or the air strut? Could you please make a video showing that because there is no video on the entire internet showing that till this moment.
I've read somewhere about faulty filter housings that crack and cost a lot of money to repair. What year of Jeeps have this problem with the 3.6? I have a new to me 2013 Grand Cherokee.
Thanks for the great instructional! Just got a "16 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L V8 Hemi. Any big differences in the oil change procedure that you're aware of? Would like to transition to full synthetic. What mileage do you feel that's appropriate. Thanks for the help!
Great video. How do you change the plugs. The dealership wants $289 to change them. Sounds a little high to me!! There is a recall on the number 2 cylinder head. They replace at no cost. It maybe a bench bulletin instead of a recall. My engine light came on and that was the problem. This is on a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with 62000 miles. What is the advantage of using synthetic oil and if you use it, how often do you change it?
+Donnie Leggett Synthetics are better overall for wear and especially startup. The penzoil platinum I mention is made from natural gas so al the molecules are the same size so its really good stuff compared to other synthetics. That plug change sounds about right since they have to remove the upper intake.
Nice Video, I have changed a lot of oil but not with the new type of filter that is also on my Jeep Wrangler. And learned some good tips from you here, My question is what is the reason behind leaving the dip stick out when first starting the engine? Must be something with air but if you would explain many thanks.
Brian, I have the 2015 Overland. I assume it uses the same oil filter, but could you confirm that for me? Also, I plan on keeping this truck for as long as I can and fuel efficiency isn't important to me. Instead, the engine wear is. Would you recommend 5W-30? Lastly, what harm would using say Ultra Platinum Pennzoil, if I began using it at my first oil change? Thank you for all your input!
I have a question for you. A mechanic buddy of mine that's worked on all my cars (Mostly Ford, until the new Jeep GC) said that before he put the oil filter back on he would fill it with fresh oil, is this not needed on the GC because of the oil filter placed on top of engine opposed to screwing in from under engine? Or is it still acceptable practice to add some oil to the filter housing before you seal it up?
good morning I am sarmad from iraq and the outside temperature about 50 centigrade and I have jeep grand cherokee model 2016 can you help me to choose right oil viscosity
Great vid thanks. Would my 15 GC be the same as this GC? Also I have 40k on it and am thinking of going to the Penzoil platinum full synthetic. I tow a boat quite a bit over the summer and people seem to think full synthetic is the way to go. Also they say you can go about 10k on a oil change, just watch the oil monitor system. Thoughts?
Full synthetic all the way. Chrysler reccomendations are shell helix, castrol, or pennzoil. Pennzoil has had a bad rep with using waxes in there oils but think they strayed away with there newer formulas. Mobil 1 isnt "chrysler certified" because of a pissing contest with all the buyouts even though jeeps were factory filled with mobil 1. I fill with mobil 1 and use either a wix or mobil 1 filter. Use a good oil filter wix, mobil 1, mopar, k&n etc. dont use cheap filters..fram etc..doesnt last as long, isnt as good construction, sometimes even breaks apart and doesnt filter well. People change synthetic oil based on owners manual or preference which range from 5k-20k miles. Hope this somewhat breaks it down. Alot of information out there but as long as you change your oil timely and filter youll be fine.
+Mauricio Iraheta I have not as mine only has about 16k miles on it. I recommend the stock mopar fluid for your model year unless you are towing then I would get a synthetic equivalent from a company like royal purple.
great video...I needed to know how to reset the computer. my truck takes four brake pedals. that did not work so after watching this is know I was way off lol. thanks!
I was thinking of using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic @ 2000 miles. My Jeep Wrangler is also new, it has like 200 miles right now. Am I making a mistake?
So i just got a 2016 model and the air intake seems to have a different design. The tube kinda goes over the oil filter and I was wondering if you knew about any changes from the 2016 model to the one on this video? The way i know its different it's because I tried looking for a K&N air intake and they only have up till the 2015s models and none for the 2016s.
60,000 is cool ... don't change the weight/grade stick to what your manual says... and never downgrade on the filter , stick to $5-6 mopar filter or better :)
Thats true. I left the drain plug off and it was finished draining. After I loosened oil filter, lots more oil came out. I'm not sure about the five minutes but easily another 15 seconds or so.
BSG Automotive one more question please. Would you still recommend I put fully synthetic oil after 5-10k period even tho it doesn't mention synthetic in the manual. thanks.

@@chuckq2998 my manual said otherwise, also the cap for the fill point and the fact that mine is a 2012 not 2013
Does the drain plug need a new gasket. I never put a new one on and don’t recollect there being one. I never got leaks.
Great video , explained everything to a T. I do have a question about the drain plug. I've done many oil changes on different vehicles, but my 2014 JGC is the first one were there was no drain plug washer. Is this OK ? Thanks
My 14 came with a drain plug washer but I lost it in one of my changes and never replaced it, never had leaks
I have 2014 limited jgc i dont remember having a washer.
I was hoping you would give some info on what would happen if the small o ring at the tip was missing, what effect would it have on the engine? I think you may have tightened that hosing a little to tight!!
Just got 14 JGC at 80k can I go full synthetic??
+beaglestink I wouldn't transition until at least 10k miles.
Very well made video. Excellent job and thanks for easy instructions.
can you use the oil filter hole to replace the 6 quarts of oil? It''s a lot easier to get to and the holes bigger.
BSG Automotive Thanks much. I will go with you suggestion on my next change.
Mine has a ticking noise on driver side engine area I'm freaking out I just bought it a couple weeks ago
Great video. Couldn't figure the new filter before seeing this video.
Mine has 73,873 how much or change the oil thanks
Nice Video, I have changed a lot of oil but not with the new type of filter that is also on my Jeep Wrangler. And learned some good tips from you here,
My question is what is the reason behind leaving the dip stick out when first starting the engine? Must be something with air but if you would explain many thanks.
No reason it was just out already for the draining process.
+NobodyHadThisOne Yes it is the same.
Dude, Great freakin video. Covers all the bases. I will subscribe now.
First time changing mine today. I heard that noise and thought I may have tightened it to much.
i have a 2014 grand jeep only 19000 miles i like to use mobile 1 syn and there oil filter what do you think, oem says use mopar oil,,,i like ur video
Saludos desde México,cuántos litros de aceite lleva el motor 3.6 pentastar v6. ? Gracias
What are your thoughts on adding an Oil Stabilizer (Lucas) to higher mileage engines?
I think you just need to click Ok to reset in the odometer screen settings that's it? why did you use the pedal?
No they use the pedal to rest the oil life monitor.
BSG Automotive even in the 2018 model?
This would be the same thing for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee correct?
They have not changed that I know of
thanks for the vid! just bought my 2014 jeep grand cherokee limited 4x4!
Congrats they are great vehicles almost 30k on ours and it has been great!
I have a 14 as all. I'm on my 6th JGC. They've never done me wrong. I'm loving it so far. Night and day over my 04 overland.
If i do not have a jack, would I still be okay if I propped it up on ramps?
I have a question for you. A mechanic buddy of mine that's worked on all my cars (Mostly Ford, until the new Jeep GC) said that before he put the oil filter back on he would fill it with fresh oil, is this not needed on the GC because of the oil filter placed on top of engine opposed to screwing in from under engine? Or is it still acceptable practice to add some oil to the filter housing before you seal it up?
+GaynNovi It is not needed and will just flow down to the crankcase anyway on these.
good morning I am sarmad from iraq and the outside temperature about 50 centigrade and I have jeep grand cherokee model 2016 can you help me to choose right oil viscosity
Do you know where that handy yellow funnel came from or its brand?
John Hart No I don't remember it was somewhere local like a walmart or more likely a blains farm and fleets.
I have a lerado 4x2, have you done rear diff oil change ? And what oil is recommended?
+Mauricio Iraheta I have not as mine only has about 16k miles on it. I recommend the stock mopar fluid for your model year unless you are towing then I would get a synthetic equivalent from a company like royal purple.
+BSG Automotive , juts got mine done and we used Penrite equivalent. Cheers!
great video...I needed to know how to reset the computer. my truck takes four brake pedals. that did not work so after watching this is know I was way off lol. thanks!
Brian thanks for all the great info. If you run into replacing a fuel filler housing on a Grand Cherokee please share. Keep up the great vids. 👍
I have the overland with air ride and wondering by raising the height all the way up if that’s enough room for oil change?
I was thinking of using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic @ 2000 miles. My Jeep Wrangler is also new, it has like 200 miles right now. Am I making a mistake?
+Daniel Lourido I would not use full synthetic just yet no.
So wait! After 5qt of SAE you put 1qt of synthetic oil? And do you change the oil at 3,000 or 5,000 for the Laredo X?
Oh lastly, how long the engine has to run after you've finished putting the oil in?
I think(?) he meant that he will use the SAE for several more thousand miles before switching over to synthetic. I had to rewind that part too.
Terrathrax he said start with Synthetic after 10k miles
So i just got a 2016 model and the air intake seems to have a different design. The tube kinda goes over the oil filter and I was wondering if you knew about any changes from the 2016 model to the one on this video?
The way i know its different it's because I tried looking for a K&N air intake and they only have up till the 2015s models and none for the 2016s.
All in all, do you all recommend tackling this yourself or just taking it in to dealership etc and having it done?
Do it yourself, this vehicle is very easy to service.
Do it yourself. It's a piece of cake. Spend some quality time out in the garage.
Thats nice video what about transmission oil change on a 2012 jeep Cherokee do uhave a video for this service thank
Frank Madrid No video for that sorry.
Helpful! I put a fumitomo valve on ... will make future changes easier and less messy lol
2015 Grand cherokee 3.6...When should I go to Synthetic?....BTW great video.
60,000 is cool ... don't change the weight/grade stick to what your manual says... and never downgrade on the filter , stick to $5-6 mopar filter or better :)
Great video! Thanks for the thorough walk-through!
I have 96,000 mines on my 2014 what oil do i use and should I use 5w20 or 10w30?
I loosened the oil filter while I was draining and it easily went for another solid five minutes
Thats true. I left the drain plug off and it was finished draining. After I loosened oil filter, lots more oil came out. I'm not sure about the five minutes but easily another 15 seconds or so.
Hello
can I talk to you I need some explanation
How many miles do you recommend before switching to full synthetic
5k at least but I prefer 10k
well done sir. you have a fan in me
Thank you, doing my first oil change at 5k today!
What about 2016 models? is the oil filter same? I know 2016 models call for 0w20 oil
2014-2016: amzn.to/2i6kjOo
BSG Automotive one more question please.
Would you still recommend I put fully synthetic oil after 5-10k period even tho it doesn't mention synthetic in the manual. thanks.
Synthetic is always a good idea after the 10k mile break in period especially at these prices for such a good oil- amzn.to/2jxDm01
