    The reason we Scandinavian people like it white or at least light is because it is so dark ouside. In december it is only 3 hours of light a Day. 😊 But we dont make it steril. We like real wood pieces, we love teksture 😊 and we dont have giant houses or apartments. So we have to have fewer things, but purposeful things. Things that Will be used, but we still want them to look Nice in the space. 😊 And we love to decorate

      I have noticed on the series Vogue Paris that a lot of French women furnish their homes with pre loved furniture pieces and things they find along the way. they add in all those things that mean something special to them and in seeing their homes they are all very charming. Use what you already have in creative ways and think out of the box. xo

    Regarding the person who goes overboard with pattern, what about the gal that maybe doesn’t take it far enough in fear of over-doing it?
    I think this is where my spaces fall a bit flat. They lack that last bit of cohesiveness. The rooms feel about 10-20% short of being great rooms😕

    The advice is great but I found all the the examples are of a similar if not the same design/conspect. Many people including me enjoy bold color and non neutrals non traditional room patterns. Lot of modern interior design leaves me feeling like I'm in a hotel or dorm.

    We have a small livingroom, but my son has many friends. Soo he ordered a big sofa and to my surprise it worked. It actually worked better than the "right" scale sofa we had. So as you said Valentina...be a rebel..break the rules, but keep it BALANCED!

    I love your take on "rules". I'm a bit tired of the typical rules (rug too small, etc..). I think we have to be aware of those, to understand the overall picture, and make informed decisions on what works for you. You transmit that in all your content and I love it. Valentina I learned a lot from you in this video, thank you, I had break the rules and i created my own colors for wall, went to Benjamin Moore and they use their high quality products to match the color I love, and the walls are amazing, then I chose neutrals to get furniture and accessories, some furniture still on the way, one color that I can’t live without is green, I have natural plans and that makes me so happy because green is life😊for me. And with all that you were talking about matches all I have done, let me tell you is being a journey, but I love it. And when you were talking is like a had you with me all along. Funny your first rule is about monotony lol. My go to is pretty much black and white. But my tv room, I suddenly got this brainstorm to redo a dresser turned console a beautiful green. I hashed it back and forth the whole time I was redoing it and still wasnt sure if I made the right decision when I put the furniture in the room but that's probably what I needed. To change up my monotonous color palette 😂

    You are very sweet and personable and I am the kind of designer that doesn’t listen to any rules but I believe designing with a feeling in mind. I agree at looking at other cultures for design ideas as that can only refine you more. I’ve been in Scandinavia too. Most of their homes are not that magazine worthy and the whole Scandi this Scandi that is more exploited by marketing. Scandi is not all modern either. A lot of traditional in Scandinavia. And yes we love Scandi Style but don’t paint our houses red here. When designing my homes I go for what feels right to me. I’ve had growth phases and what I have learned is to not to fall for this heavy marketing. It’s almost always wrong. Most designs what I see out there I simply don’t like. I think that paid designs are too often in transitional category and when it comes to modern that is confusing term to most people as they are bombarded with the term modern all the time they don’t know what it is. People tend to like what they grew up with. I grew up in the 70’s and ‘80 and my early childhood home was clearly mid century but with some antique elements. Mom had an orange kitchen and orange chandelier that was operating and could change length. I also remember very versatile furniture pieces that can be either or. Everything was done it’s just new fresh variations but ultimately the feels are related to our past experiences. You may like white walls more because of Nordic experience and you may like something a little off because it reminds you of the Moroccan playfulness with patterns that we in the west are not accustomed to. Regardless everything we love we were trained to love. Go to RH enough times and you will like their merch. Which is nothing special imho other then the cloud. I do want a cloud in my home.

    Scale is becoming an issue for me. I’ve never had a house with ceilings higher than 8’. We are building a house right now with 12’ ceilings-and the little vase that looked good in our last home just isn’t big enough. It looks silly on the fireplace. So I’m going to have to rethink many of my decor items.

    I had a designer from a luxury store walk into my living room and tell me that the scale and proportion were off! When I asked how to fix it she talked about buying either a new couch or accent chairs. She never explained why the scale and proportion were off and her only explanation was to buy different furniture from her. After she left, I felt depressed. The only thing that I could figure out after looking at several design magazines is that my side table (which is between my two accent chairs) is a couple of inches higher than the accent chairs. Maybe the side table should be lower or the same height as the accent chairs.

    Great AM chat! Not a fan of tone on tone. It definitely is flat and boring IMO. You definitely need texture & some variation in a room to give it some energy. It’s funny tho because I like tone on tone in clothes. It looks very elegant… but you do add jewelry and other things that make it interesting.

    Was it just me or were these photos not necessarily showing what we were talking about at that moment? For instance, she was talking about too many patterns and in the photo there were like three solid color items, and no patterns at all. I swear it was happening throughout the video If I am wrong about this then obviously I need a crash course in design elements

    Regarding over-designing--keep some "Wabi-sabi, right?!" Can I also ask you and other commenters a question? What other channels would you suggest on TH-cam that are similar to yours with lots of *good* design tips and examples? I have trouble finding channels to follow that are accessible and aren't too "high design" for me, or too young and hipstery just repeating everything that's trending on Pinterest. So far, (if anyone cares!) I love following Lindsay Living--the sweetest!, YOU OF COURSE, Nick Lewis (he's spot-on, sassy, and SO funny!), and also Kristen McGowan for her DIYs and hands-on tips. But I always am looking for MORE to follow because I so much enjoy learning more about design. Who do you follow??

    I am usually drawn to colorful things, but I can’t live with them. At 60 I’ve FINALLY realized this. They have to stay in the store and not in my home. Feel best around neutrals.

    I have learned to photograph my rooms and study the room to help me figure out what is working and what needs improving. Thank you for another informative video. I wanted to mention that I bought some sea sponges from a Greek Village calledTarpon Springs and they are fantastic for creating DIY art. Tarpon Springs is the next best thing to visiting Greece. 💕

      We go to Tarpon Springs all the time. My great grandfather was a sponge diver there after WW2. It's a fun little town with some amazing Greed food as well.

    We are currently remodeling but one thing we had so wrong was scale. We had these super comfortable chaise lounges and while they were comfortable they were way too big and it was difficult to move around. Now we are switching up and moving them up in our loft and adding a seat and ottoman so it can be a cozy couch bed and moving the TV there are well. We have measured it out and I think it will be better. Plus getting new covers for everything so it matches and in velvet.

    Have you ever designed homes that are cottage style? Cottage style brings me joy. I find it homey and very cozy. If you have, do you have any videos of homes that you have designed? All your pictures are very modern that you show in your videos, do you ever do other styles like country or Scandinavian style?
    I think that you and your husband are adorable and so enjoy watching your videos and ideas, even though are styles are very different. 💕
    would not be happy with black walls ever.

    Should you put anything on the top of the toilet, I hate clutter, but do you put the spray away and keep getting it out of the closet every time?🤷🏽‍♀️I hate clutter, it hurts my brain.

    I noticed that people who like tight very formal OR people who are not sure about balance use symmetry in decorating, its safe, cant go wrong but then end up really wanting that relaxed classical interest that is tricky to achieve unless your trained. You should do a video on showing people how to create asymmetrical symmetry and different vignettes like the 3, 5 rule, using foundation items and how to build on them, how to make the eye move around the room and how to achieve asymmetrical interest. Many already know how to do this, but still so many dont. I think you could make a great video on that with all you know.

    Great tips!...but my biggest dilemma is does my whole house have to be done in either cool or warm?...I really want to do greys, silver & black when I get a new home but I don't want to get rid of everything I have now which are warm tones and I still love some brown warm pieces I have and don't want to get rid of everything can it still work if a room or two such as bedrooms are still warm tones and rest of my home are done in cool colors?

    • @lisaf5303
      @lisaf5303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I struggled with this too. I use black, white, warm grey, silver, brass, and copper. I'm now adding medium wood tones and beige as accents. I think of you select the warmer tones of black, grey and white then you can bring in your warmer pieces.

    • @Jordan-cm4tg
      @Jordan-cm4tg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you should try to blend in your warm pieces as best as you can. Perhaps some taupe and cream will help bridge the warm brown with cool grey.

    • @Stephanie-lg1cm

      Rich wood tones look fantastic next to dark grey and black, it warms it up and adds depth and character. Also black and grey are neutral colours which go with almost everything else. I have a charcoal grout Chen with woos decorative pieces which look stunning. Neutral beige rooms look fantastic with black accents, it looks really sophisticated. Just put some of your existing stuff with your new palate and see what happens. 😀
