    If you choose to go active duty, CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO. They told me 68W wasn’t available at MEPS. I said “thanks, but I did my research and the only MOS that interests me right now is 68W, let me know when it’s open” and went home. I got a call 2 days later and signed.

    When I first went to MEPS and wanted a specific job I showed up and it wasn't available and they threatened me with "you will be labeled unable to enlist" "you won't be able to use government stuff for 6 months (including drivers license and FAFSA)" "you can get fined for going MEPS and not enlisting that day" and other BS! Just ignore that it's all false and it is your life make sure you pick what you want to do! Also if they know you will not enlist with any other job they will go out of their way to get you that job! Whether it's looking for a different ship date or making phone calls to other people they can get you that job if you communicate with them what you want! Most recruiters are good people and don't want to entirely screw you over

      Thats one of the reasons they dont like us prior service people. I cant speak for all but I caught some BS from the Army at MEPS. And the crazy part was i was there for the US Navy. I was like "Sarge, I may have been born at night, but it wasnt last night."

      Tristan Thomson, I just went through this and can confirm you’re 100% right. I was “reserved” for 68w, which I didn’t wanna do(lack of alternatives) and didn’t think it was locked in or anything. The way my recruiter described it wasn’t the way it went. At MEPS I went and talked to our branch’s “counselors” before the medical stuff, so he told me I was locked in and he told me just to go do everything and afterwards we can talk about it. Anyways, I come back hours later and he confronts me and I told him the same thing I did in the morning. Especially since the night before and the entire time at MEPS everyone told me not to do what I didn’t wanna do, so I basically had the longest fight with the counselors. The whole sending you to the waiting room for no reason for a good amount of time(hoping I’d get impatient and just do it?), getting yelled at by all of them, the whole “you’re gonna miss the swear in today”, etc... it was a whole mess. I got a 92 on my ASVAB, so I was able to do anything and they had me watching videos forever on the jobs that I told them I wasn’t going to do...just more yelling for wasting their time(even after telling them honestly that I wasn’t going to choose any of them). I didn’t get what I wanted, but I got something better than what I wanted. Which did cause me to have to go wait another hour and a half to do more stuff on the physical...plus then had to run around forever and do all the paperwork, then swear in. All in all, glad I don’t have to do that again. It’s a one time and done thing though, so don’t stress out about it too much if you’re thinking of enlisting.

    Airborne! This happened to me when I was in MEPS. It was an emotional experience when the man, with the computer, told me to pick another MOS because my choice wasn't available. I felt betrayed and lied to by my recruiter. I remember sitting down and scrolling through the list of available MOS's with my heart broken. I was about to cry like a little kid because I was so angry and pressured to choice "now". Long story short, he gave me a 12B Combat Engineer/Airborne MOS with no bonus, but to this day, I am grateful for my MOS. Even though it was a last minute "pressured" pick, I am in love with my job.
    On our last FTX, I jumped with live DET cord and M81 blasting caps. (LMAO, Army crazy like that)

    Hey Matt I'm going to MEPS tmrw to enlist with a reserved spot for 13F mos! I just want to say thank you so much for all the videos you've made over the years. They have made this 3 month process of becoming a soldier virtually painless, and I feel tremendously more informed than I was the day I first went to speak to my recruiter. Between your videos, a few google searches here and there, and the visits with my recruiter, I've managed to transform any and all nervousness or anxiety into pure excitment to begin this new phase of my life.
    I'm a firm believer in if someone is doing something right, to tell them and encourage them to keep doing what they are doing. You have hit the nail on the head regarding any concerns I've had whether it be BCT, AIT, MEPS, PT and so much more! With your help I managed to get a 91 ASVAB score and am already capable of passing the APFT before my ship date of March 24 (Ft. Jackson). I know you might not think you've helped as much as I say you did, but trust me, your assistance thus far has been unquantifiable! @@92powerdiesel61 I love the infantry. It's terrible at times and sucks, but there's no other MOS that I would want. You've gotta be about that life. Ask yourself this: are you up for a deployment? How about a combat deployment? If you answered no, then you'd probably want to find a better MOS for you. If yes, then it very well could be what you want. I will say this -- don't settle for Cav Scout or Combat Engineer because they think they're "basically infantry" you either are or aren't. Know that I know these statements made by meps staff were all lies, under pressure I chose 12C Bridge Crewmember, not a crappy MOS just because I already work in the the building industry as a civilian. Moral of the story dont crack under pressure, watch and listen closely to this video , YOU make the choice not them (as long as you are a civilian), go for your job(MOS) no matter what they say, just make sure you stand firm on your decision and are content with you're game plan and MOS.

I got what I wanted as an infantry but I feel they should treat anyone with a GED, as long as you meet the requirements, the same way as someone with a high school diploma. I don't know how shameful it made me knowing I worked so hard to get a 50 on my ASVAB just for them to tell sorry you don't get a bonus. Even before that for the government to tell me how less of a person I was than someone with a diploma really hurt. Im a 92G culinary specialist AKA “cook.” I made the biggest mistake by choosing this MOS because I rushed the process and did not want to retake my ASVAB. It really is not easy. 0200 wakeup in the field, working ADA “All Day Action.” So my advice is do not make that SAME mistake. Choose an MOS especially if your going on ACTIVE DUTY. ACTIVE DUTY is no joke lol. But pick something you want to do for the next 3,4, or 6 years and WORKOUT BEFORE YOU LEAVE, PUSH YOURSELF SERIOUSLY ! Also just be aware of some recruiters they can lie to you. AND HAVE A GOOD DAY. if yall got questions LMK too.

    Can you make a video on how to choose an MOS (if you haven't already)? I know what I'd like to have as my MOS but like you said, it's a very important choice and I dont want to choose something I'll regret.

    as someone that had to settle I agree with you. but the reason I had to settle was because I tried for 37F which requires a test outside of the normal asvab course that I couldn't pass for the speech courses. I picked 14J, but I don't regret it cause I met some pretty good soldiers because of that. Always have to wonder what could of been though.

    • @SFGiantsfan9797
      @SFGiantsfan9797 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not true. If you did not do ROTC then that leaves OCS or OTS. Depending on the branch it ranges from 9.5 weeks to 17 weeks of officer training. Air force is 9.5 weeks on Montgomery, Alabama, Army is 12 weeks in Fort Benning, Georgia, Marines is 10 weeks in Quantico, Virginia, Navy is 10 weeks in Rhode Island and coast guard is 17 weeks in Rhode island as well. Does that help?

    It's a choice for between 2 to 6 years or more. If you hate your MOS, chances are you will ETS after first enlistment. And be bitter about the whole experience.
    And some will make more bad choices. And end up in a Detention Cell at the PMO or Brig (Jail), waiting on a Senior NCO to pick you up. Trust me, I have seen Soldiers get picked up by First Sergeant.....it's not a pleasant scene.

      It may be challenging as the maturity level and different age culture will set you apart. I went in at 27 and was considered old as most of of them were around 18. Realise that many of them have never been away from home and never lived on their own. Many of them have never been to college, had jobs, paid bills, or traveled and experienced much outside of their childhood area and people they grew up with, so they may not be as accepting of differences. Being prepared and in good shape helped a lot, because they can't look down on you for that. Other than that, being current on youth culture and not coming across as parental lecturing or old school nostalgia may help. If you look young don't let them know how old you are, lol.
