Figures that the best level was cut! Turel's lair looks awesome...high ledges, lakes of lava, the smokestack, an apocalyptic industrial zone. Even the music is eerie. I wish one day a remastered version is made with these cut levels being added in as originally intended. It always bugged me that Turel was never seen, yet his banners are seen everywhere. Why didn't the creators just take their time and do the game like it was supposed to be? Deadlines? I'm so jealous watching this. Wonder how the boss battle was going to be...Turel's attacks and dialogue with Raziel?

I'm so glad to be able to see this this. Looking at the model for Turel I in my own head canon believe that this form would have been one he had before we see him in Defiance. Much like how Dumah was still fairy humanoid because he was impaled on his throne while his awakened brothers were more degenerated.
Its so satisfying to finally see a walkthrough of this, one of the most iconic screenshots of a cut area! The scale of this area, being one big puzzle, is awesome, a great way to access Kain's Retreat, as the final part of the game! :)
Such a shame this was cut, it looked nearly finished. I honestly would've preferred this Turel over the one from Defiance. Pretty surprising that we would've killed him pretty early within his territory.
If they had finished it though the story would have been much shorter and simpler, there wouldn't have been a SR2 nor any of the complex time travel plot involved.

I agree with you on being disappointed the way they handled him in defiance. He should have been in the game. He looks cooler here than the batlike thing they ended up using.

They should've at least kept his original humanoid form in Defiance; it never made sense to me how he was so deformed to the point of being a quadrupedal, especially how each brethren got less and less deformed depending on their rank/skill. Speaking of which, maybe in their normal vampire form Raziel could've taken them on in hand to hand/weaponry combat, but as deformed monsters there's no way Raziel would've bested them in combat, nor match them in pure strength, even though he's pretty strong in his own right. SR1 may be criticized for its excessive puzzles; but when they nailed it, they nailed it, especially when it came to boss fights, hence Raziel having to rely on his wits to outsmart his brethren to defeat them. I mean yeah we had to hit those gongs first in order to inflict damage on Turel in Defiance, but I would've much preferred outsmarting the humanoid Turel in SR1, making him contribute to his own demise like the previous brethren. While the voice actor did an amazing job on Turel in Defiance, I liked Turel's original voice as it sounded much more sinister and creepier. I liked the exchange between Turel and Raziel much better in SR1 as well, especially when Raziel asks him in a mocking way if he's learned to swim like Rahab; now that I think about it, I love all of Raziel's exchanges in SR1, since he's rightfully condescending towards all of them lol

Looking at all the footage from various Alphas and Betas over the 1Q99, I'm pretty sure that if an Late March-April Beta from which the Sanctus Christus Trailer was made and which contained what appeared to be a finished version of the Throne Room in Kain's Mountain Retreat, ever surfaced - enterprising fans would probably have enough to work with to eventually create a working prototype. It would seemingly be the final point when they were still going full steam for the original vision. Looking at the May betas, you can estimate that the decision to scale the project came in very soon after said content was released probably mid to late April. Judging from the promotional material, with some hard work it could probably be brought to working order. It wouldn't be pretty, but with some work it could probably be rendered functional. I wonder if the decision to scale back was because of the Mountain Retreat, most of the main removed areas are mostly complete in the Feb. Beta only needing some minor touch ups and texture work, and game logic for puzzles necessary. But the Mountain Retreat was barely a stump, which according to Dan Cabuco was supposed to be as big as any of the main areas. I don't think it's outrageous to think that had they cut off all the fat eg. forges and glyph shrines, they could make a wrap on the Undercity and the Smokestack with the time they had. Perhaps realizing they won't be able to finish the final area before the deadline, they chose a cut off point for the story that was viable with the least amount of redone voicework? Reworking the Undercity and Smokestack into the game, even if finished - would require substantial sessions of re-recording to fit into the revised story, which would drive the costs up even further.
Sanctus Christus was actually made from even earlier builds than those of 23rd Jan and later due to the old attack as you move combat system which was scrapped early in the development but seen in the trailer. It also did not have any footage from Kain´s mountain retreat (the throne room was still untextured). That´s an interesting perspective that maybe cutting the forges and glyphs could have given them more time to work on the Undercity and Smokestack instead, which is perhaps true. Forges were important for gameplay reasons as the Reaver was non-lethal weapon originally and they only added a killing blow after May Beta, right before finalizing the game. Actually, no re-recording would be needed as all the voice work has already been completed for the original story and they only added later recordings of Moebius and Tomb Guardian and a few other alternate ones to accommodate for the cuts.
A boss fight early in the dungeon? Barely any script? If I was Raziel, I’d *try* to beat the brothers on PRINCIPLE (would probably take a LOT of strikes) with the Reaver rather than just offer the only way: using your surroundings.
I'm starting to think that Turel's Lair was not cut due to lack of memory but rather because of the game's release schedule, there just simply wasn't enough time
The TLW walkthrough of this area stated that some of the upper ledges were unreachable without cheating, but you actually did reach them without cheating. XD Ah, damn, what I would give to be able to play this. This seems to be the deleted area with the highest level of completion (posession not working aside).
I really hope some day someone gets to reimagine Soul Reaver, this time including all this cut content. Though, it would certainly mess up the stories of the games that came after soul reaver, at least a bit

If Morlock in the retail version was originally Turel, where was Raziel supposed to get his original TK powers in the alpha? You've been referring to Turel's gained abilities as "amplified". I think I missed something. I watched all the vids up unto this point in one sitting, so I'm likely having a huge Derp moment...
Good point, we have debated this previously and it looks like Raziel was always meant to obtain the basic TK projectile underneath the Sarafan Tomb (room is labelled boss2 but is not listed under boss rooms in the debug menu). Looks like the Turelim there would still bestow TK projectile onto Raziel (originally by soul consuming, then it was changed into a separate relic item) and then Turel´s soul would amplify it.
There is a lot of created yet unused content , not sure why some of this was not included in the final version the game was and still remain a masterpiece!! I hope sony does something about it and make Soul Reaver remake and include all this!! If it ever....
It all boils down to needing to invest further time and money - they've already missed couple of their deadlines and to postpone further would mean potentially not releasing that year so they tidied up what they had and cut everything unfinished. Many games have similar issues (look at Cyberpunk).

The music playing in the background is the correct one. They reused it in the Sunlight Glyph. Turel Encounter track would only play during Turel´s cutscene/boss fight.
So much work lost. Parts of this level ware one of most impressive visual wise (not without reason they ware shown in screens) and yet they ware cut - in exchange many less interesting tunnels and caves remained. Shame. When you build a game you focus on most impressive and signature elements first - this show how desperate and in chaos they ware.

Yes, that climbable wall is actually easy to miss! It allows Raziel to glide down to the alcove and the giant double door.

Here Turel was a lot of smaller, than Turel from Defiance. But poor, that this wasn't complete.

@@thejjohn9504 It is not. As the Smokestack has been cut, they have placed them into the Lighthouse which had previously Dumahim there.

So much work lost. Parts of this level ware one of most impressive visual wise (not without reason they ware shown in screens) and yet they ware cut - in exchange many less interesting tunnels and caves remained. Shame. When you build a game you focus on most impressive and signature elements first - this show how desperate and in chaos they ware.
