Ian is he only remaining member of the original band. Sadly we've lost 2 members along the way, Jon Lord back in 2012 to the Big C, and Blackmore's replacement, Tommy Bolin, in 1976, due to a massive drug overdose. Jon Lord's organ playing needs no further recommendation, he was legendary. Personally I loved Tommy's guitar work and felt he was easily Blackmore's equal, but he was a troubled young man. Glenn Hughes was also troubled at the time but at least he managed to straighten himself out.
I loved ians work with whitesnake..although i just loved how he played with bolin and hughes..octopus on a relatively small kit swinging the more funky jams along.
I love Blackmore's guitar wizardry...and he most certainly deserves credit in being one of the best EVER guitarists. That said, he was truly an inspiration to many shredders, who grew to be technically better than Ritchie, as well as (much) faster... But in my heart, nothing compares to the originals (long list from that era)...

Guillermo should be considered one of the greats. Up there with Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Rolling Stones, etc. They’re personally my favourite. I used to listen to Smoke on the Water on a mixtape CD that my brother made that I’d listen to on long journeys. Took me many more years to hear Machine Head all the way through. Got myself Deep Purple in Rock on vinyl for my 19th birthday a few months ago. Amazing stuff

Paicey's drumming never really did it for me. IMHO, he functions as some kind of facilitator or timing function, but not as a real musical contributor to the songs.

Later maybe "Death Alley Driver" or "Drinking With The Devil" with Joe Lynn Turner?
Ritchie Blackmore was probably the greatest Rock guitarist of his era. His solo on this track was WAY ahead of it's time and with no overdrive and delay.
No overdrive? I guess you mean no additional pedal, I'm pretty sure he used treble boosters though. And for the delay, as far as I've heard he always used a tape echo.

People tend to praise led zeppelin (rightfully so) but people often forget that the most innovative guitarist or that time (atleast in rock n roll) was def ritchie which was mixing classical chord progressions with blues. Page was simply putting distortion through blues.

Deep Purple is to good, "Highway Star" is one of my top 10 all time favorite songs. "Smoke on the Water" another amazing classic, written about a FRANK ZAPPA show that ended in the entire venue/casino catching fire. What a more fitting way to introduce yourself to some Zappa. Which I'm still here for!
I love the classical elements of the music, in this song. Ritchie Blackmore was one of the first guitarists to bring that into rock music. One of my all time favourite guitarists.

I saw Deep Purple live..twice! The second time was the 'Burn' tour with their new singer, David Coverdale. I immediately went to the 'record' store the next day and bought this album. I feel so blessed to have seen some of the great groups perform live when they were in their prime and I had nary a care in the world. 😁

jgsrhythym 100 I got to see the Come Taste the Band tour in February 1976, just 19 days before they called it quits. I've been a fan of Tommy for years, so CTTB is one of my favorite Deep Purple albums. Poor Tommy, the guy who replaced not one, but two, of rocks best guitar players during the 70's in Joe Walsh and Ritchie, but he just couldn't beat his demons. I was extremely bummed when he died.
Yes, what a JOURNEY we have been on! it's a journey again to see some of these old songs I sort of forgot about over the years. And its so cool to see someone enjoy them for the first time. I remember exactly where I was the first time I ever heard this song. It was on an 8 track tape cassette in the back of my dad's Chevy Impala as we were doing a road trip to Reno Nevada up HWY 395... surrounded by mountains and desolation, as i was trying to learn how to play poker with my older brother. I was 8 years old! needless to say, i remember playing this song over and over again. I would definately like to see you do "Pictures of Home"

I learned that guitar solo note for note and play it a few times a year just because. All band members were monsters on their instruments.

I'd never heard this song until one of my band members suggested it. Now it's one of our strongest songs. I play bass on this and it's a blast. Our keyboardist, obviously, loves it.

The drummer, "Ian Paice" was one who never got fully recognized for the outstanding drums on Deep Purple songs.

Deep Purple is to good, "Highway Star" is one of my top 10 all time favorite songs. "Smoke on the Water" another amazing classic, written about a FRANK ZAPPA show that ended in the entire venue/casino catching fire. What a more fitting way to introduce yourself to some Zappa. Which I'm still here for!

I love the classical elements of the music, in this song. Ritchie Blackmore was one of the first guitarists to bring that into rock music. One of my all time favourite guitarists.

I saw Deep Purple live..twice! The second time was the 'Burn' tour with their new singer, David Coverdale. I immediately went to the 'record' store the next day and bought this album. I feel so blessed to have seen some of the great groups perform live when they were in their prime and I had nary a care in the world. 😁

My favorite DP album is actually there last if the 70's with Tommy Bolin(replaced Bkackmore) on guitar. Album " Come Taste thw Band".

jgsrhythym 100 I got to see the Come Taste the Band tour in February 1976, just 19 days before they called it quits. I've been a fan of Tommy for years, so CTTB is one of my favorite Deep Purple albums. Poor Tommy, the guy who replaced not one, but two, of rocks best guitar players during the 70's in Joe Walsh and Ritchie, but he just couldn't beat his demons. I was extremely bummed when he died.
Yes, what a JOURNEY we have been on! it's a journey again to see some of these old songs I sort of forgot about over the years. And its so cool to see someone enjoy them for the first time. I remember exactly where I was the first time I ever heard this song. It was on an 8 track tape cassette in the back of my dad's Chevy Impala as we were doing a road trip to Reno Nevada up HWY 395... surrounded by mountains and desolation,
as i was trying to learn how to play poker with my older brother. I was 8 years old!
needless to say, i remember playing this song over and over again.

I love your open minded enthusiasm. I need to be more of that, myself. Thanks for your ability to appreciate. This track has been dear to my heart since '76 when I discovered it. I learned that guitar solo note for note and play it a few times a year just because. All band members were monsters on their instruments.

Tragically Hip the lead singer fond out he had like a year to live so he decided to do a concert in all the big cities in Canada they where great shows he is gone now but left some great songs

@Cortland Johansen you have to check out Black Country Communion. Glenn Hughes sounds like he's 21, plus there's Joe Bonamassa on guitar and Jason Bonham on drums. 4 studio and 1 live album so far. The first one is phenomenal.

I'd never heard this song until one of my band members suggested it. Now it's one of our strongest songs. I play bass on this and it's a blast. Our keyboardist, obviously, loves it.
