I like Magmortar because of its amazing design and power, but what I don’t like is that it only appears in a couple of episodes but never returned for the last years :(
Although Magmortar didn’t have as much screen time compared to Paul’s other Pokémon, I always considered it to be one of his signature Pokémon. I also love how Paul had both Electivire and Magmortar since they’re basically counterparts.
Speaking of Paul’s battle against Brandon, looking back, it makes sense that he had so much trouble. Look at the team he used: Nidoking, Electabuzz, Hariyama, Ursaring, Magmar, Lairon. Not really a team built for facing one of the toughest trainers in the world, he doesn’t have some of his hard hitters like Gliscor Honchkrow or Torterra. However, what he does have is a team built to face an ice type specialist, with things like Lairon and Hariyama that have Same Type Attack Bonus super effective moves, and even Electabuzz, Nidoking, and Ursaring all have fighting type attacks. This makes sense considering that he had originally been preparing to fight Candice, but challenged Brandon in the heat of the moment
Plus, I’m pretty sure most of the Pokémon he used against Brandon had yet to reach the peak of their full potential, especially since some of them were only just recently caught, and half of them weren’t even fully evolved yet. They could probably easily handle Candice, but definitely not Brandon.
In my Opinion Ash's Victory against Brandon was Mediocre Compared to Paul. Brandon Used All Three Regis and had the Opportunity to use any 3 of his regular pokemon he had. Ash only battled One Regice, I don't remember Ash's battle being a 6 on 6 with Brandon. I think it was 4 on 4 ? But still ash only fought one Regi in his last battle with Brandon
I’ve always loved Magmortar ever since I first saw it in Platinum. Seeing Paul use one in the anime made me love it even more. I even used one in my main team in Legends Arceus.
GEN four was one of my favorite generations, and the new evolved forms for old Pokemon was a big reason for that! Paul’s magmortar made we want one and an elective.
Some fun trivia, Magmortar succeeded at everything Chimchar could never do under Paul's command: it matches his stern training style, tanks super effective moves, and uses its ability without any difficulty. Thought that was some neat attention to detail knowing it was Chimchar's replacement.
Paul’s magmar is another interesting mon in his party! Also I got nothing else to say about it all I know it was a good replacement for chimchar and I think both magmar & magmorters design suit Paul in my person opinion.
Paul's Magmortar was the first time i've seen the mon although i had some knowledge of it. And i love its design, and it felt like a missed opportunity but i guess Paul wanted to rotate again. Great class Professor for next mon i would love to see Ash's Goodra or Hawlucha
Magmortar did have a limited screen history but certainly was a worthy replacement as Paul’s fire type Pokémon. Most likely Paul caught Magmortar as a Magmar and saw it was worthy of his time, defeating Maylene’s Lucario with ease and became much stronger upon evolving into Magmortar.
Perhaps Paul also did the same way of evolving Magmar into Magmortar by just having it hold the Magmarizer and then let it get sent through a transfer trade machine to induce evolution just like with Goh & Scizor
Now imagine if Paul offscreen captured a Charcadet and evolved into an Armarouge, both are Fire Types and have arm cannons that shoot fireballs. I could see Magmortar and Armarouge being great sparring partners
Us, as fans: "Yay, a Magmortar! This new guy's going to get an epic rivalry with one of Ash's Pokémon, just like Magmar did with Charizard, right?" Writers: *Silent* Fans: Right...?!
Worked out great for Paul catching a strong fire type replacing Chimchar. Magmortar viewed as one of Paul’s Multiple powerhouses. Also great that Crispin Elite four’s blueberry academy has a Magmortar as his ace I believe. This Pokémon getting more love Paul’s Magmortar will always be number one a trainer owning this pokemon.
Earliest video I’ve been too! Loved his mqgmortar and glad they used Paul to show off both the new cross trade item evolution Pokémon along with electivire
Paul is the only trainer I could think of having multiple aces rather than just (sure alain did have tyranatar and metagross etc) But Paul's pokemon were proven tanks( like Urasaring,Magmortar,Tortera, Electivire,Drapion, even honchcrow tanking supereffective hits from Ash's Staraptor)
@@Jranthony04I mean Ash was in the finals, and featured in 20-23 seasons at that point, so he had to have a powerful ace like team at that point Whereas Paul just had 1 season managed to get that amount of aces
as someone who used a magmortar in alola I love this pokemon...what sucks is it evolves through trading holding a magmarizer...I used sunny day on my Magmorter to boost it's fire moves
huh, i didn't think you'd do this one as he had less appearances then electivire and hey why not do cilan's pansage next?, i feel there's a reason why it didn't evolve
I know Chimchar's rival was Elekid, but it would've been cool to see it up against the Fire type that took its place in Paul's team. In Glory Blaze, Paul told the story about how he first came across Chimchar in the wild. After witnessing its Blaze, he mentioned that Chimchar would be more powerful than ANY of his fire type Pokemon implying that he already had some Fire types (probably at his brother's house) which may have already included Magmar. I do like your theory that perhaps being inspired by the one he fought in the Tag Battle Tournament led to him catching one to battle Maylene!
It would’ve been great to see Magmortar’s personality and maybe even participate in the league against Ash. It could’ve been focused on attacking and be showing to be sadistic, worrying even Paul’s other pokémon but he’d see it as a strength. Later in Journeys’ Paul episode, we could see that Paul’s Magmortar abandoned him since it still sees kindness as a weakness. This episode would end with Paul trying to explain he will still push his pokémon to the limits but know being mindful of their feelings and stop when going too far. However, Magmortar would still attack him, thinking that this was a weak trait as he left for good, teaching Paul and Infernape what kind of sadistic & distant people they could’ve become.
Paul may have been a massive jerk in diamond and pearl but he certainly showcased his skill as a trainer in how he made his mamgar turned magmortar into an impressive powerhouse. Using only 10 days to improve how magmar was against Brandon to the intimidating magmortar, who tanked attacks from a buizel and empoleon like it was nothing. Imagine if Paul was to return, a second time post journeys, magmortar would probably look forward to a rematch against Brandon’s Registeel.
So, i was about to watch the video and i came up with an alternate title... but then i realized, the clever name pun i came up with, would be the PERFECT name, for a Convergent Form/Evolution! My alternate title was: From Magmar, to Magstar. Thus, introducing... Magstar! The Solar Flare Pokémon! A Fire/Fairy Type. Abilities- Serene Grace/Misty Surge/(HA)Costar. I don't have any more stuff thought out for it cause i just cane up with this like 15 minutes ago.. except it will evolve! Thanks Prof. Silver for the inspiration! (Side note: I love Magmar and Magmortar, and wish we saw more of Paul's)
Hey Prof, I loved how you read between the lines to uncover a narrative story in this episode instead of just listing off appearances. Could you do Guzma's golisopod next? Since golisopod only had a handful of appearances could you dive deep into speculation about its backstory about how Guzma and golisopod met, its history as a wimpod, its life in Guzma's abusive home, how it evolved and its life in Po town? And could you put in a little bit of fan fiction bc many people feel that the anime missed a massive opportunity by NOT fleshing out Guzma's and golisopod's backstory and role in the anime. The duo's role in the anime feels very bare bones compared to what it could have been. By seeing how Guzma and golisopod met, how they endured physical and emotional abuse in their home, seeing them being mentored by Hola in Guzma's childhood, fleshing out his rivalry with Kukui, seeing them sun away together to form team skull and living in Po town could have made the most mature story in anime history. Maybe it would be too dark but sun and moon pulled off the stoutland dying episode and the story of Mallow;s mother.

Magmortar is one of my top 10 favorite Sinnoh Pokemon. Though I wonder how the scenario would play out if Ash obtained a Magmortar of his own after witnessing Paul's.
I would love to see Infernape Fighting against Magmortor. It would to prove Paul that he didn’t see Chimchar’s potential after switching out with magmar.
I always thought that Paul's Magmorter was underrated. In the shadow of his ursaring, torterra and Electivire. But I like it as a pokemon and how menacing it was in its battle with Ash
In my opinion, Infernape doesn't stand a chance again Magmortar. Just imagining if Paul had used his Magmortar and Ash had brought his Johto legend Charizard to deal with it (leaving Torterra aside), that would have shown Ash's unpredictability as well.
