DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

magmar and electabuzz are based on the karura and oni respectively! the karura is a japanese hindu-buddhist mythological creature depicted as a humanoid/bird-like fire-breathing creature, and the oni is a yokai, and is basically kind of like a japanese ogre with horns and big tusks often depicted wearing tiger skin and sometimes depicted as having ties to thunder and lightning! hence why magmar and electabuzz look so strange to those of us in the west :D

Magmortar deserves better
I feel bad for Magmortar, probably because my shiny Magmortar I caught In Pearl without the Radar as a Magby was such a rarity because it held a Magmarizer, Female and had a Modest Mature, a 1 in on 1 Million chance of occurring.

When PU first came to Pokemon showdown, I ran an eviolite max special defense lava plume, clear smog, rest talk set with flame body. Clear smog got rid of stat changes, burns made its defense hold up, and its special defense was incredible. Made it to Pokemon showdown's no.1 spot in ranked for about a week. Was a fun set.
Magmortar and Electivire would’ve seen more usage if their Speed wasn’t sacrificed in the evolution smh🤦♂️
It’s not just their speed, it’s their lack of boosting moves and good moves. Magmortar gets strong moves, but not moves with the coverage it needs(energy ball, scald, earth power, calm mind, or even nasty plot); however, it’s strength at least allows to actually be somewhat useful in wall breaking or dealing decent damage. The same can’t be said for Electivire, that guy has Magmortars problem but in reverse. Lots of coverage but really weak attacks that forsake the actually good attack stat. It’s main stab is thunder punch and nothing else. These two guys(or gals) really need boosting moves and stronger coverage options.
@@CarlosAlberto-nq3iv exactly, They have so much potential to be stronger, I mean like.. If you have the right set on Electivire he could actually take out an Infernape like in the anime, I really wish they didn't make Electivire and Magmotar as bad as they are in Pvp
@@CarlosAlberto-nq3iv giving them better abilities would work too
Electivire would like Iron Fist, Electric Surge, Galvanize and/or Adaptability even
whiling Magmortar would like Mega Launcher, Drought and/or Sheer Force
@@goGothitaLOL Magmortar can't do anything with Mega Launcher.
@@anonymousgreninja6994 that's why i would give it Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse and some new Fire STAB that gets boosted by it
Magmar's japanese name is Boober. Can you imagine blaine shouting that during magmars debut?
Boober4uber
ok boober
It’s more like boo baa so it may sound like he’s doing onomatopoeia for ghosts and sheep.
It's also partially based on a real-life bird known as "booby." You can't make this up.
Boober I choose you! Boober use body slam!
I find it so weird that Magmar and Blaziken are based on such similar myths (the karura and basan respectively) as well as birds, but got such different results.
Magmortar never reached “OU but sucked” like Electivire, but unlike the former, actually managed to fare better in the lower tiers to the point of getting banned.
Good job, Magmortar.
Magmortar at least feels better than its prevolution (unlike Evire). What it really needs is boosting moves and stronger coverage moves: scald, earth power, aura sphere, energy ball, flash cannon, and moonblast. Our fat karura buddy has potential, it just needs these moves.
@@CarlosAlberto-nq3iv Magmortar's coverage is the least of its problems. Even if it got all those fancy things, it only has 4 moveslots, one of which has to be Fire Blast. At the end of the day, it would still be held back by being a pure Fire type with mediocre defenses and average speed.
GIR177 Magmortar should at least get sheer force.
Magmortar has a better career competitive wise than Electivire. Being sent to the lower tiers meant that Magmortar can utilize its firepower in an environment that's conducive to it. Unlike Evire, who was a lower tier pick in a metagame that doesn't have any need for its talons.
@@GIR177 I realize power is so muchly wanted here, but why is it still worth the power if the accuracy can and will sink you when you need it most?
Call me a largely untrained competitive player, but why not just rely on Flamethrower for more consistent accuracy or even Lava Plume for consistent accuracy and a whopping 30% burn rate?

Let’s give Jynx some love since it’s kinda like a part of the trio with Magmar and Electabuzz!
They were a trio until gen4
Holy crap. Jynx still matched up to Magmortor and Electavire despite not evolving? Crazy.
Frostitude 2 stronk
Lovely kiss, and nasty plot were fantastic moves Jynx could abuse, and ice and psychic stab moves hit most Pokémon for at least neutral damage.
Time to finish off the trio
How GOOD was Jynx ACTUALLY
lol nah next week is the patreon pick
Pokeboss wait what trio?
@@NylaTheWolf In gen 1, most people saw JYnx, electabuzz and Magmar as a trio, this is further strengthened when gen 2 happened (they all got baby forms) Also more evidence was how they were all right next to eachother in dex numbers.
In gen 4 it got no evo unlike MAgmar and Electabuzz so yeah
what trio?
Ron the Auraknight Also their typings further strengthen this because, Fire, Ice, and Electric are the 3 destructive types of magic. This is like Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyerum follow this as well.
00:16 From Bulbapedia: (Magmar) is possibly overall based on a Karura, depicted in Japanese Hindu-Buddhist mythology as a birdlike, fire-breathing creature.
How good was Jynx ACTUALLY? Jynx was the only one of these three to actually see some serious competitive use in the higher tiers, so I think that it’s deserving of a video

Heh. Fish lips.
So his mega evo would be Perfect Cell on fire
This reminded me of my overheat/power shift magmortar. It was fun to use it, and passing the stat drops to the enemy helped a lot, since it forced a change and improved magmortar's survivability (Tried replicating that same thing with Altaria, but haven't seen it work the same, and with mega-altaria gone, it seems like a difficult strategy to pull off).

I feel like Electivire and Magmortar (And maybe Dusknoir and Mamoswine too??) are Pokémon that deserve a much higher BST than they actually got, with their insane Pokédex lore feats, their beastial imposing design and especially regarding their pre evolution BST. Like maybe around between the Tapus/UBs and the generic mini legendary trios like the legendary birds, Swords of justice, Regis, Ho-oh's beasts etc. Like how about 575 or 585 BST? I feel like that's perfect for Electivire and Magmortar. Also give Electirizer and Magmarizer a recoiless life orb function to their respective signature family line like a slightly worse Light Ball, just for fun.
Confuse Ray / Smokescreen or Toxic / Fireblast / Hyperbeam is a force to be reckoned with in Gen I. I have killed lots of OU Pokemon with these sets on Pokemon Showdown

How good was Persian actually? Time to give a chance to the crit hit king of gen 1
I agree! The Crit King needs his spotlight 🐱😸👍!
Yeah lets go with Persion one of my favorite Cat Pokemon!
Excellent! I want Persian as well! Just keep upvoting comments asking for it and we shall get it eventually 🐱😸👍!
Long comment ahead, but it's *VERY* worth your time to read as far as Magmortar's general availability goes in it's debut Generation.
Upon consideration of getting Pokémon Battle Revolution, I checked the shop contents to see if you could get Magmarizers, as they are so glaringly scarce. You want to know what I discovered?
*They aren't obtainable through Battle Revolution's shops! Why the heck not?!*
HGSS only gives *ONE* per save file, and you have to get Rock Climb to even get it. Which means you have to have all 16 Badges.
Magby holding one for Thief/Covet/Trick purposes needs either a Diamond or Pearl copy and a dual slot with LeafGreen. You can't even find any Magbys in HGSS without breeding, which doesn't give hold items.
Edit on 7/25/22: There is a single obtainable Magmarizer on Route 214. It's on the floor, but only for Platinum. It's still not much, but it's there.
Besides everything from above, the only other way to get more is doing PokeWalker effort. Which is rather obnoxious since actually *getting* a PokeWalker besides actually doing the steps once you figure out how to use it isn't easy.
Edit on 7/25/22: Amity Meadow in the Pokewalker is an event based area and the only place you can get the Magmarizer through the Pokewalker. I guess your kind of screwed there.
...How did GameFreak screw up this one item's accessibility this so far badly? Battle Revolution having the Magmarizer in the shop's contents would have made it an even better incentive to buy it after so much trouble involved elsewhere.
Makes you wonder if the later games actually made it less of a nightmare to get access to Magmortar after how ridiculous Gen 4 went as it did. It makes even more sense for how it's competitive history went as well with the hoops you had to jump through just to use it in the debut.
I remember I once made a dumb set to counter Baton Pass teams in gen 8. Magmortar was part of it, it had:
- Belly Drum
- Flame Charge
- Earthquake
- (I don't remember this one)

Hoping we get it sometime in November, unless the Patreons happen to ask for it 🐱😸👍!
Jaiden Carvalho true, that’s the one of the main reasons it’s a crit monster, alongside slash
FOOK YES
@@truevoltz7451 Yes and Slash is STAB for Persian so that does 50% more damage along with a critical hit 😸!
I'm only answering for Gen 1.
The short answer: Good, not great.
It has a really limited move pool, and its base stats don't allow it to do mixed attacking unlike Tauros. Persian is only *slightly* faster than Tauros, but it has worse HP, ATK and DEF. Plus, thanks to the limited movepool, it's easily walled by any Rock or Ghost types (Golem, Rhydon and Gengar were meta in Gen 1 and thus easily wiped the floor with Persian, because Bite isn't Dark-type in this Gen either).
Has nothing notable other than Slash, which is nice for wiping out Alakazam and other Psychics, but doesn't fare as well toward any other physical-based Pokemon due to being more of a glass cannon than Tauros was. Due to the nature of critical hits, its 'setup' moves (Screech, mainly) are pretty worthless since Criticals ignore ALL modifiers.
There's only one skill set you're using with Persian, and that's:
1) Slash
2) Bubblebeam
3) Thunderbolt/Thunder
4) Optional
4th can be either Toxic, Substitute or even Hyper Beam, depending on the user's personal tastes.
EDIT: You might ask "but if it has Bubblebeam, why is it walled by Rock-types?" Answer: Persian's Special is weaker than Tauros's so it is not guaranteed to sweep Rhydon and Golem on contact unless it crits (despite that both have 4x Water weakness and lower Special values...)
Best magmortar moveset:

Thunderbold
Psyquick

GOD AWFUL is what you are looking for hahaha
@@voidfields5065 Well it does have some nice toys like natural access to Ground Coverage in Drill Run(by level up no less)
And with access to focus energy in gen 7 and its Hidden Ability Sniper, Focus Energy+Sniper Works pretty well it just lacks an actually usable stab move with a boosted crit rate... (It does get Sky attack but the move is just bad...)
Now if GF gave Drill Peck a boosted crit rate(currently it has no added effects) and perhaps Slash (even if slash is a bit too weak to the point where like all other slash variants it is envious of Leafblade's +20 power buff)

What I basically got from this video that one of my fave pokemon never stood a chance in the meta game even with a new evolution and decent moveset. For shame.
Yeah real Shame
Still, what a legend
It was ok in the lower tiers. So it's not all bad. Can't say the same with Electivire.
So it usually is. Doesnt make Magmat any less awesome in my heart, though.
How GOOD was Persian ACTUALLY? Giovanni demands you to review his favorite pet!
YES! Hopefully we get lucky for next week, if not than November we shall push for 🐱😸👍!
Hi cats friends, you remember me? Ahah 😃😃😃
Good to hear! Still love Persian's old sprite, with the ears being more triangular-shaped, but otherwise, love it after all these years (except the alolan form, it ruins the cuteness)
Where's the love for the Lati twins, dammit?!
@@DanyBlue I remember you friend! We just have to keep upvoting comments asking for Persian to increase our chances of getting the Classy Cat! We are getting publicity now I've noticed. Hopefully the Patreons either happen to ask for it or we manage to pull it off in November! Go #KittySquad 🐱😸👍!
Next weekend is patreon pick but how good was Persian actually?
You should cover this in november so I can move on to piloswine and mamoswine next.
I really want Persian to happen soon! Hoping we get it in November unless the Patreons happen to ask for it... Until than we got to keep at it until we get both Persian and Piloswine/ Mamoswine 🐱😸👍!
Patreon pick? since we're basically doing a group of Pokemon we'll probably have a derpy pokemon interrupting.
@@anon2447
maybe ditto?
and Patreon picks are done the same way as youtube. A group of patrons agreed to vote as a group for a pre-selected list of Pokemon. Then one with most voted votes get a video on first weekend of month.
@@guildmasterri5995 Hey if you still want Persian to happen, than can you try to be on here tomorrow around 12:00 p.m. please (when the next video usually uploads) so that your comment will be among the first ones requesting Persian as that might make a difference. If we can get everyone who wants Persian to comment around the same time and keep upvoting each other's comments than chances of Persian being next dramatically increase! The Patreons chose Pidgeot for tomorrow, which increases our chances since it is not a mon that will start a trio or duo.Thank you so much and may we have Tweety Bird tomorrow and hopefully Sylvester and/or Piloswine/Mamoswine soon :-)👍!
@@jaidencarvalho1761 ah sure
i really wants him to do Persian video next weekend then majority of people can move on to Mamoswine.
Persian for the c-c-c-combo breaker.
Hey have you guys ever thought about doing an LC edition of this? It'd be interesting to see how pre evolution pokemon stack up against their fully evolved forms in terms of usefulness in their metas.
How GOOD was Jynx ACTUALLY?!? Let’s finish this Gen 1 Trio!
TheAerialAcer no infernape must be next
"Thicc fat Grumpig sits on it", uh, okay
Magmortar isnt exactly frail. It has above average special bulk and paried with an assault vest it turns into a sufficient tank. Its defense is average but hindered by its defensive typing. Whats weird though is it learns barrier (wtf?)
Another niche is that it can boost its own speed thanks to access to flame charge backed by a decent attack that isnt completely rendered useless by a modest nature as long as ivs are existant. Couple that with its extremely good special attacking capabilities and you have a decent sweeper
It also has acess to belly drum which can always catch somebody offguard couple that with his good attack and access to a priority move, flame charge and high BP coverage moves he is really hard to counter
Hp doesnt increase with megas
How GOOD was Golem ACTUALLY?
It's time for the old Lizard/Rock!
