    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    The group practices for their stunt but as they go to land, Selkirk's (Corin Nemec) chute doesn't open.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Wesley Snipes is battling bad guys in the air again, this time with parachutes, in this action-packed suspense thriller. Pete Nessip (Snipes) is a Federal Marshall who, teamed with his brother Terry (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), is escorting criminal computer genius Earl Leedy (Michael Jeter) to a new prison facility. Pete, Terry, and Earl are on a jet en route to Earl's new lockup when terrorists attempt a daring hijacking; Terry is killed in an explosion aboard the plane, and suddenly Earl is missing. Pete discovers that a team of sky-diving outlaws, led by former DEA agent gone bad Ty Moncrief (Gary Busey), have snatched Earl from his flight and spirited him away for a special raid on Washington D.C.; Ty and his men intend to take advantage of an obscure rule in which the normally restricted airspace in Washington D.C. is open to parachute enthusiasts on July 4. Eager to avenge his brother's death and put both Ty and Earl behind bars, Pete recruits sky-diving expert Jessie Crossman (Yancy Butler) to teach him how to infiltrate Ty's team of sky-bound criminals. Superb aerial stunt work highlights this film; please note that Pete's last name is an anagram for the leading man's last name.

I get what you’re asking; why didn’t he just open his chute with him? At that altitude, they would have just dropped like a set of bricks if they were together.

    As a skydiver I love this movie and I love this scene, very thrilling. Having said that there are plenty of problems here. Yes I realize this is just a movie and it all seems very real, however there seems to some liberty taken with established safety procedures. First off, everything before they open their chutes is all real as if it would happen for real. However from the moment they open it's already bad. At 0:29 you see them all opening their chutes and all are in frame. That would NEVER happen, you never do that. Each skydiver seperates from the other by tracking (the thing swoop does when he goes after his friend) for a few seconds in order to open the chute from a safe distance from others. An opening chute can't be controlled before it's fully inflated so it can happen you fly into each other when you're opening next to each other.
    Second point. Each skydiver checks his gear at least 3 times on critical points (risers, main pin, reserve pin, BOC, PC, main flap, riser flaps, 3 ring release, cutaway handle, reserve handle) once when gearing up, once before loading, once at prep hight (usually at 9000 to 10000ft) and sometimes also during jump run before green light (door open, plane speed slows down preparing for jumper exits). The fault in the movie is the jumper seems to have a disconnected riser which is basically one of the easiest things to spot. His reserve pull also seems to have been cut. Granted that's something you can't immediatly spot since doing a test pull might release the reserve. Although it is possible to pull slightly and see if the reserve release pin budged but that's not part of standard safety check since such a malfunction requiers deliberate tampering.
    Another point is the amount of time skydivers are given. Swoop would have never been able to reach him (do I need to mention no matter how hard you yell nobody can hear you and while intercom systems exist and are used in skydive it's usually given to first time student jumpers who communicate under chute with a trainer on the ground who guides them in for landing).
    Also the guy in trouble seems to have difficulty releasing his main which also doesn't make much sense. His release is on his right chest, it's basically the most easiest place to reach for. It makes no sense he's yelling "'I can't reach it". The movie seems to imply he needs to cut his line with a knife and due to him swinging around he can't get to it. That's not at all how you release a main chute. The funny thing is, when swoop goes after him he shows exactly how it's done and how easy it is. The release handle (usually in the form of a red velcro attached cushion) only needs to be ripped off the velcro with the right hand. The funny thing is Swoop goes down with both hands to pull on each side (left silver handle is the reserve release) but he actually only pulls right which is correct.
    Also, at the point where the guys on the ground yell they are at 2000ft, at that point it would all be over in less than 5 seconds.
    This last one is something I'm not quite sure off. When I started skydiving in 2007 each skydiver had a cypress device in their rig that would automatically fire the reserve if you'd still be fallin fast below a certain height (usually 1000ft). I'm pretty sure those existed in the mid 90s, however I'm certain that if they did those things weren't an obligation, I bet most wouldn't choose to use it (at 1000 dollars for a cypress not all would choose one if they had the choice). Nowadays you can't jump without one. If the guy in the movie had one all he had to do was cutaway his main and wait for his cypress to fire if his reserve release line was cut/

    Swoop getting from his cutaway to a track position in real world skydiving - he would need to be much higher - but looks cool. Also for all you non skydivers - you can’t hear anything in the sky in free fall - decent amount of Hollywood to it but the tracking by swoop approach and slowing down grabbing him that is not Hollywood that’s certainly possible for a very experienced skydiver. Nobody tracks except to get away at the end of a jump. Approach speed would be so fast slowing down an issue. I have been out of the sport for awhile but still have all my gear. To people watching this who have never been skydiving - the sport is safe especially tandem. 99.99 percent of the time people get hurt because it’s their fault and almost all people who get hurt are experienced skydivers. Main and reserve malfunction like this unheard of. A rigger packs the reserves they have to be repacked periodically. Don’t be scared. Skydiving is awesome.

    The tracking to the jumper is realistic - In terms of speed - when swoop cuts away his main canopy
    the body position he is in is called tracking in skydiving which is always used to get away from other skydivers when jumping in a group at the end of a skydive before deploying. The cutaway noise is not accurate lol cutaway handle is on one side of the skydiving rig chest level reserve handle on the other side this is all accurate. Holding his cutaway handle is also accurate - I dropped mine on my only cutaway but the rigger can replace that easily. reserve canopy part is bogus they are spring loaded. I have had a spinning canopy cutaway myself - skydiving rigs now have RSL connections from the main canopy so when it is detached the reserve is automatically deployed. Happens quick just want to be stable meaning on your belly. In real life a canopy malfunction does cause spinning in AFF (skydive training) they train you on this and when this happens it took me 5 seconds to determine this and cut away my main canopy. As a licensed skydiver myself - swoop’s cutaway to assist the other jumper is nothing I have heard of this doesn’t happen in skydiving but is certainly realistic and possible as long as swoop significantly higher than the other guy. For someone to actually do that - looking at 2,000 jumps plus in terms of tracking skills and free fly skills. Cool scene - reserve and main canopy failure is unheard of that is Hollywood. blue skies.

      FeatherSkate hahaha, you are the only dude here that seems to know how this shit kinda works.. I couldn't help but to laugh the whole time. who has the time after a formation(everybody pulled in place, wtf?) to scream "cut away!" while under canopy to someone falling 100mph who is trying to kick out of a canopy that will never inflate, then while cutting away the main, do a stylish backflip to save your buddy. holy shit, and the grabbing the parachute to pull it out. anyone would have Mr. bill'd that shit. they must have been 30000ft up. haha I know, I know, it's a movie... but the entire thing is too shitty to ignore...

    Also - when parachute malfunction - you know it almost immediately. Some skydivers pay packers at the drop zone to pack for them - I did if you want to do 7+ jumps a day packing can be a hassle. Almost always not an issue. But the reserve is packed very carefully and differently. Deploys faster. Guy who died in the movie’s canopy came out weird. Usually in real skydiving a parachute after you throw a small parachute out that sucks out the main parachute takes I’m guessing 600 feet to completely open and you are flying it. Something called a slider keeps the parachute (called canopy by skydivers) from opening too fast which from 120 mph to 12-16 mph too fast would tear the canopy probably the lines and that’s just not how it works. So the canopy opens relatively slowly. Skydivers usually exit the plane at 13,500 feet deploy at 3,500 feet. Nobody who skydives uses the term “chute” or “ripcord”. Cut away means pulling a handle not cutting things with a knife or something. Now y’all know more about skydiving. Cheers.

  • @ryansullivan9648
    @ryansullivan9648 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also the pull handle on the guy with the issue is on the wrong side it is on the right side with most skydiving rigs his on the left - in the movie also what is unrealistic is when he has that malfunction both of his risers would still be attached - meaning one on each shoulder would still be attached only one is. Also when this happens in real skydiving it is usually a line over meaning you are spinning and falling in a circle and It is intense. Never heard of or seen a parachute (canopy) this messed up upon deployment. Figure I would pass this on because not many people really skydive other than tandem and since you like skydiving movies I’ll give you the info from a real skydiver. :)

      When he said 9-11 is not gonna work for him he meant it in a way by saying don’t bother calling 9-1-1 because their is no point “9-11 not gonna work for him”.... it has no reference to the 2001 terrorist attacks even though I never have heard anyone else say 9-11 like that referring to the emergency phone number... hence the reason the terrorist chose that 9/11 date was to mock our 911 emergency calls, and also is why they chose “American” and “United” airlines....
