    We conducted this test to compare the performance and noise between Epropulsion 1 kW electric outboard to a Torqeedo.
    Craft used a Rosco 20' canoe on the Noosa River, speed in km per/hr, power in watts. Both motors same wattage 1000W and both were taken to full power each motor achieve the same speed.
    Two runs were done with each motor and in opposite directions to get an average incase tide and wind affected the results. Used the Torqeedo tiller GPS for speed results for both

    Thanks, guys, your video was informative! I have been trying to find someone who has used a canoe to test these motors. I restored a 16' 1974 Lowe canoe and I'm running a 12v Newport 55lb thrust trolling motor. This motor only gives me 2-3 MPH. With the E-Propulsion plus and your test I should get 3MPH at just 100W of power and almost 8MPH at 500W using the E-Propulsion plus. Fixing to buy the E-propulsion plus and all let you know how it works with my canoe.

      How’d it work out for you? I’m in same boat and considering an epropulsion for my canoe

    • @thomaswalters5519

      @@ProdigiousReturn It is working great. The E-Propulsion is really Quiet. All I hear is the water churning up behind the Canoe. I could get 6 mph into 9 mph head wind and 8 with no wind. The wind picked up when I was out there and had I had the trolling motor I would not have made it back to the docks. I was out there for about 3 hr. and when I checked the battery I had around 75% left. I would highly recommend the e-propulsion to anyone.

    Nice video! My local dealer is recommending the Short Shaft instead of Extra Short Shaft for my 15.5 inch transom height. They mentioned the additional length would be helpful in choppy water conditions there would be more chance of the prop coming further out of the water and then unit will begin to lose performance since one blade is no longer catching all of the water it needs to in order to move the boat forward --especially when encountering waves from other boats or wind blown chop. Did you have this experience with Extra Short Shaft unit?

    • @electricboats
      @electricboats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The outboard used in this test was a short shaft
      What shaft length is best for your boat depends on your type of boat, where you use it and how. If its a inflatable boat and its a yacht tender then it's not normally going to be in choppy sea conditions for pitching to be an issue. But having an extra short shaft is an advantage when coming ashore to a beach. If you have a small sailing or fishing boat then the these types of hull shapes do pitch more and a short or long shaft may be needed. The use is more likely for travelling a distance and having the propeller come out is a loss of power.
      check
      Another thing to consider is the strength of your transom the longer the shaft will have more leverage on the transom.
      This link is information on shaft sizes and distances to top of propeller in mm, www.bbelectricboat.com/expert-help
      If your boat is a sailing boat and wish to use the Spirit Evo with hydro-regeneration, it is available in short and long only.

      Epropulsion does not offer alternative propeller sizes for the Spirit1plus. With Torqeedo do not know.

    My Torqeedo has had issues owning it for 4 years. The charger failed. Replaced by a 12v 6a power pack from Aliexpress at 1/10 the price of the original. I have put a slot in the shaft to permit replacing the shear pin without dismantling the motor. Minn Kota already have a slot in the shaft. I also have a very old Minn Kota Riptide that is 12 v but I use an 18 v lipo battery and it works brilliantly for a fraction of the cost. The Minn Kota is also much quieter.

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My charger failed too. Only, I put a wet water blanket next to it and it got wet. My fault!
      I've replaced it.
      I had a Minn Kota before the Torqeedo, and the noise of the Torqeedo is minimal and doesn't bother me in the least. They do offer a newer model of the 1003 that is noise free and 10% faster.

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I replaced my Minn Kota trolling motor because it didn't have the power to get us back to the boat launch if we were going against a strong wind or current on the ocean or current in some rivers. I got tired of really struggling and bought the Torqeedo. I recently went through a breachway and experienced a strong ocean surf & riptide with a strong current bringing our inflatable boat out to the open ocean. The Torqeedo cut through that no problem and got us back safely. Once we committed to going through the end we realized the conditions were way too strong for our boat and luckily we didn't flip. If we had a Minn Kota 12v motor, I don't think we would have enough power to have made it back! Exactly why I bought the Torqeedo.

      Seconded. It amazed me how terrible the Torqeedo motors sounded in videos, but seeing them in person at Annapolis this past week completely changed my mind from "OMG I couldn't live with that" to "wow, that's a total non-issue".
      I think maybe it's just the inexpensive built-in microphones are picking up and exaggerating high pitched frequencies. In person you can hear the motor whine and gearing, but it's subtle, like a muted cordless drill.
      I would like to see a side-by-side test at full power on RIBs though. Just sitting in water tubs at the boat show the Torqeedo appeared to be much more powerful at full power, but who knows if that translates to more performance on an actual RIB.

    any rpm curve data available? also would a steeper pitch on the prop make your canoe faster?

    • @electricboats
      @electricboats  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi both outboards don't display rpm so not able to collect data to show this way. A steeper pitch would get the canoe faster but you would run the risk of overloading the motor if the canoe was loaded up with more weight ie camping gear. Both outboards only offer one size of propeller to match the motor output.

    ePorpulsion technologicall far away from torqedo..
    1-batary connection with plastic pin by torqeedo is really technologicall fail.If you loose it is gone..It is not floating.
    ePropulsion Battery bigger capacity,easy connection and floating.
    2-TWO wire connection of torqeed makes many connection
    failures.ePropulsion only one wire connection.
    3-control panel of torqeedo create many problem due to connection while mounting..ePropulsion rigit on the main body so eliminate connection problem
    4-ıf you check silent test torqedo reach 74dsb full power while ePropulsion only 48dsb

      @n8goulet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had my Torqeedo since 2013 and I love it.
      eProrpulsion to me is a knock off of a Torqeedo. Generally when you copy a product, you sell it cheaper. But the ePropulsion costs more! The Torqeedo was already very expensive. There is a need for a far less expensive alternative.
      The ePropulsion originally was noise free and may have been just a tad faster. So what does Torqeedo do? To compete, they made the 1003 as a new model available that is basically the same but it's noise free and 10% faster, but it does cost a bit more. Looks the same, and I believe mostly uses the same parts, battery, etc.
      The most important thing is being able to get replacement batteries, parts and service. Torqeedo is widely available here in the USA with service centers too. I believe for some repairs the motor might have to go back to Germany, so if ePropulsion offered great service centers here that did everything, that could be an advantage. But I suspect the opposite. I've never seen an ePorpulsion on the water. Do they even have a service center in the USA, or places in my area that sell them? I can drive less than an hour in many directions and buy Torqeedos, batteries and accessories.

      @@n8goulet so you are saying that torqueedo had an inferior motor in noise and power until epropulstion bested them, so then torqueedo improved. To me that is the sign of lack of integrity and innovation. I would not say as your comments that epropulsion is a copy...maybe they saw an inferior product and realized they could make a better one which i believe they have done and torqueedo is only improving because they have to, in order to compete. Looks different from my perspective with same data available.
