@@2134knees She would have a better shot if it wasn't for that stupid 4 team only rule. With that I think it would be hard unfortunately. Biles and Lee are definitely going to make it, and either Skinner or Carey will be taken for vault/floor, so that leaves 1 other person.
Funny how back then a double twisting Yurchenko was " a very difficult vault", and now people don't even blink when they see a gymnast do one. Just shows how much gymnastics can evolve in just one decade
Wow, that opening story. Wow. That just demonstrates how drastically this sport has come in the last 15 years! Odd how as soon as Marta was gone the US sent an entire team (+2 individuals) of 18+yo women to Tokyo, most of whom were over 20! Most of the individual WAG medalists at the Tokyo Olympics were in their 20s, too. Gone are the days of adulthood signalling the end of a gymnast's career, and I'm loving it.
Yes! I compared the ages of the Olympians in 2008 vs now in 2024 and the change is real and so healthy! The way the commentators talk about Nastia as potentially too old because she would be 18 at the 2008 Olympics is INFURIATING!
I dont know if someone already said it, but in the beginning Nastia did a nice tumbling pass on the trampoline, "stuck it" and her dad criticised her for leaning forward (which she does sometimes, so its a good criticism!!) Shawn did a dismount off the bars and fell and Chow said "i liked that one, a little bit more feet but I liked that one" Funny comparision between their training :)
I believe they both (Nastia and her dad) worked so hard to get that gold all around medal. I feel like that's what she really wanted the most. For Chow and Shawn it was really just about something entirely new to them - she had already exceeded expectations. P.s. Shawn's dismount was really good indeed, she looked amazing.
gluecksbaerchiex3 Valerie is such a cruel coach to me. He pushes his gymnasts so hard that they’re bruised and broken by the end of their career. Chow has had a great reputation for making gymnasts who are happier and healthier.
@@user-kh9ki3kq8m most of the time it isn't even all valerie coaching them and when talking about Rebecca bross she wanted to do the double Arabian it want only Valeri
Margaret Flynn As much as I hate defending Al, there was a pattern at the time - Patterson and Raducan (if you count her) were both 16 when they won, Podkopayeva was 17, and Gutsu was 15, so the average age of the last four all-around champions was 16. Nastia was actually part of breaking that stretch.
Yeah, it's only within the past couple of years that we have seen this trend start to change, and it's totally normal to see gymnast in their 20's. 25's the new 'old' in gymnastics. Although I noticed the trend is less prevalent in the US, but I suspect that's because girls a lot of girls want to do NCAA after, and for most there are no opportunities to make money within the sport unless they go pro.

Its ironic how Elfi talks about how well received Ivana would be by the international judges as she finishes her bars and then a couple months later at Worlds they tore her apart on bars lol
I haven't seen worlds yet but Ivana doesn't get a lot of height on her bars elements and she was short on so too many handstands. I can see why she got ripped apart here
Baby Shawn is adorbs, poor Nastia makes me want to give her a big hug. It'll all be okay in a year. Ivana is very reminiscent of the flawless lines of Courtney McCool, not surprising.
At 40:36 did anyone else hear when Valeri quickly asked Nastia if she was okay. I love how he quickly went into Dad-mode there. He is such a caring father. He is so sweet!
The choreography and music of Shawn's floor routine is HIDEOUS. Thank goodness for her judges don't care about artistry one bit since the new system came int place, maybe even a bit before that.
Ivana Hong turned 15 in December and during this Quad you were allowed to compete the year before the Olympics for more experience if you turned 16 during the Olympic year.
Everyone talking about how miserable nastia looks while Ivana also looks sad... nastia has ALWAYS talked about how she wants her dad to be hard on her and how that how champions are made. Plus, her ankle probably killed her all night.
Also the 1991 worlds, AA final. It was great! Zmeskal, Miller, Gutsu, Milo, Bogi, Lysenko, Bontas, etc. competed. The crowd was loud and Zmeskal took the roof off lol.
USA Gymnastics Is there any way you could upload the 2007 Women's Artistic Worlds? Team or AA? Or even the event finals? The only videos I can find of it are HORRIBLE quality. Thank you!!
I feel sorry for Liukin. I know her father loves her very much, but as soon as she finished a routine, he's always there talking about where she went wrong, teaching her how to do better next time, but I think she needs a bit of space. She rarely smiles and on top of the normal competition stress, there's wanting to please your coach and so when it's your own parent, it must be twice as stressful.
I know what you mean. I am a Dancer (mostly Ballroom) and I am ALWAYS hard on myself. When I saw Nastia and her dad constantly giving her criticism on what she did wrong - I wanted to scream give her space!!! My coach knows when to correct me and when I am beating myself up for something and when the later is happening, she makes it fun and makes making corrections almost fun and makes me forget about being a Perfectionist!!!!
Maybe that's what works best for Nastia though. Each gymnast is different and so coaching them is going to be different. I mean Carly, Nastia, and Rebecca came out of the exact same gym and they all were coached differently simply because they are different people. Coaches know whats best for each person and they must take that into consideration when coaching them
and Nastia has said in an interview that her dad is just her dad outside of the gym and the only time they talk about gymnastics is in the gym. Plus side of having your own parent as a coach, I would imagine, is that it is cheaper.
They're also Russian. Eastern Europeans have much different public personas than Americans and western culture. They don't smile as much, they don't express themselves the same way. It doesn't mean they're unhappy; culturally, they're just different with how they express themselves.
Why was Ivana scored so low? And how was she able to compete at 14? I thought the youngest you had to be was 15 turning 16 that year. I also wish Jana was chosen for the world's team in 2007 and the Olympics. She was one of my faves of the quad. She should have made it over Bridget Sloan IMO. I feel the situation with Jana reminds me of Morgan Hurd. Both were very good in the first two years of the quad then kinda fell off which is so sad because I love both gymnasts.
Anyone who can do what Shawn can on a beam gets my respects. I mean a layout?! I love gymnastics, but I will die if I do that. My coach cant even to get me to do a freaking handstand on the beam.
