Well the sad thing is the us is the same it’s always been it’s just the rest of the world has fallen off . gymnastics is a dying sport, while american domination is fun it’s not good for the sport in the long run for the rest of the world to keep dropping off.
It’s so hard to watch these old gymnastics videos…how scared and tense the young women are, how injured they are, and how the announcers just criticize them for every tiny mistake…and rarely compliment. I used to like watching these before 2015…and the horror show was starting to really come out. Ania Hatch too old at 25? Simone at 26 says “hold my beer.” I feel for these young women, and I am amazed at the bravery and who knows what torment they had to face to say “enough is enough.” I know it’s not perfect now, but I see smiles, I see relaxed faces…I see tension and nerves, the normal kind…not the side eye to how much is my coach going to beat me or yell at me…maybe except the GAGE athletes…still.
It always makes me sad to see video of McCool in 2004. Her implosion in Athens was a real shame. One of the prettiest gymnast that America has produced.
@@Tiger-cm1qc that little balance check and her step out of bounds on floor in qualifications while never actually said I believe was why she was not even selected to compete in team finals. It was a theme of this Olympic cycle sadly
Its funny to watch these videos and hear that a double twisting yerchenko vault is super difficult. Whereas now, amanars are pretty much considered normal. :P
Courtney Kupets has the coolest floor routines. So innovative. Carly had perfect landings on floor but her choreo left a lot to be desired. It was like 90’s Karolyi gymnast choreography lol for 2004 everyone else was doing a bit more
Courtney was an AMAZING gymnast and I admire a lot about her gymnastics. However, I'm fascinated that you thought this was an example of good choreography lol.
@@jbmusician2007not true at all. Simone bile stuck her amanar in 2015 and tim went ballistic, Simone stuck a yurchenko double pike in warm ups at the Olympics this year too
Probably, but Marta proved herself wrong by using Carly in the bars lineup instead of her, and the US ended up having to count a 9.2 something. I think Courtney's mistakes on day 1 were just flukes, and those can be fixed in day 2
I can't handle the way they are talking about Tasha. "A lot of boys calling the house"?? People change over time so I understand someone who said that back then may loathe the idea of saying that today. I personally wouldn't want to be judged by who I was in 2004 either. But still, cringe-worthy.
I cannot be shocked by the commentators when her own mother talks about her on camera in the same manner and obviously her gym couldn’t have been a great environment for her to be tossed out twice
I think 2004-ish was when Team USA's dance started to decline. I mean look at Tabitha Yim's dance, the tumbling is there but really? The dance was just no. I know I cant do any of this stuff, and I am not exactly a prima ballerina myself but, seriously. I also noticed that with Courtney Kupets as well
Satan's sister is more like it. A friend of mine was an outstanding gymnast back in the '90's. She had a chance as a 12 year old to meet Marta, told her she dreamed of being an Olympian. The response back?? You don't have the look of an Olympian. This was not directed at her performance, but on her actual appearance! Apparently she wasn't "cute" enough. My friend never did gymnastics again- instead she did track and won an NCAA DIII title.
@@saragrant9749 I'm glad your friend was able to find something else to excel at because gymnastics can be toxic behind the scenes. Marta and bela were gross and cared more about medals than the athletes that won them smh. Its sad that your friend couldn't do gymnastics, but she definitely dodged a bullet with marta
The thing that annoys me is the way they talk about Tasha and what on earth was her mother thinking talking about her daughter like that I mean imagine going to the press and saying that stuff also if her coach has thrown her out twice then why did her family keep sending her back there it’s obvious that it was not a good environment for both her and her coach
Taking scores from nationals and trials, Kupets had the highest single as well as highest average score on UB and BB. McCool had the second highest average BB and FX scores, which considering the Americans weakness on FX it made sense to take her as well, noone could've known that she was going to blow up in Athens like she did (and the US team absolutely suffered not having her peak FX). Kupets, McCool, Patterson, and Hatch are locks, and from there you can take a couple of different approaches. Using highest single scores it makes sense to take Mohini (VT and UB) and Tasha Schwikert (UB). Using average scores it makes sense to take Mohini and Tasha or Liz (VT/FX) and Holly (UB/BB). Terin ended up doing well in Athens so alls well that ends well I guess but her scores in the US at nationals and trials didn't really reflect that. Unfortunately at that time they had a 'secret trials' behind closed doors where Memmel and Vise did routines but we'll never know who did what there.
One of my favorite things about newer competitions is that no one talks about needing to impress the Karolyi's anymore. That system was just sick.
Very toxic and harmful winning at what cost
Courtney McCool has the MOST GORGEOUS gymnastics!
I love how they say this is the deepest team ever. Little did they know how deep it will be 12 years later
Alex Arulf hell 8 years later was deep lol
They could probably even make three teams

Agreed!
Implosion?
What implosion? All I remember is a balance beam check during day 1 of the team competition. Was there more?
@@Tiger-cm1qc that little balance check and her step out of bounds on floor in qualifications while never actually said I believe was why she was not even selected to compete in team finals. It was a theme of this Olympic cycle sadly
The Gliders gymnasts always had great choreography. Good for Beth Rybacki for getting them to pay attention to dance.
I can’t believe Tasha used this same floor music for the entire quad.
YES!!! How can an , at the time, top notch gymnast keep using the same routine??????
This was one of the only USA national where scoring was pretty low compared to the Olympics those 9.3 were 9.5 at Olympics
Big band/swing music on floor had the early 2000’s in a choke-hold 😩 Thank God for Tabitha Tim’s floor!
Try not to think about which doctor Holly was seeing here.

Courtney McCool! My all-time favorite American gymnast!
Katie Cavanaugh and many said she shouldn't make the Olympics, scroll up
Best switch side leap!
Im here for the comment section since this was my most memorable year to watch
Just watching nationals till the season starts again...
Alex Arulf same

Kelli Hill seems so nice and you never hear anything bad about her as a coach. ❤
Love Patterson, Kupets, Hatch, Bohadwahj, McCool, Memmel, and Vise.
Bohardwahj
You're both wrong. It's Bhardwaj.
McCool's dismount reminds me of Moceanu's in 95 during event finals. very scary but lucky she's ok!
Every time al speaks I say ‘shut up al’ out loud
Were all Janiga's passes on floor E elements?
I think so. This routine would be competitive today!
Listen back to these commentators, it seems inmates on death row have less stress than these girls.
But if someone sticks a vault like Annia hatch now, the commentators flip tf out 😂
Davis Wetter and she was injured and stuck that vault. A real professional.
Because the last gymnast to stick a vault like was Mckayla Maroney in London.

@@mht4908 Yeah and Kupets counted a 9.1 on FX. They should've used someone else in the FX lineup.
Kathy Kelly, Márta Karolyi, Steve Penny, Al Trautwig, Kelli Hill, Al Fong, Mary Lee Tracy, and Terin Humphrey please report to the principal’s office.
I wonder why they didn’t show any routines from Mohini Bhardwaj?
She didn't have a good Nationals - made it to Trials by the skin of her teeth. She killed it there, though.
I love Courtney McCool routines.
Because they were just uploaded a couple days ago.
Tabitha Yim floor music was also used by Sylvia Mitova (BUL) at ‘91 Europeans
Can’t believe how thin they liked their eyebrows back then.
Lacie May yes and not just thin but poorly shaped lol
Carly’s floor routine is one of my favorites ever!!!
Always loved Courtney Kupets but never did understand the backwards walking spider part of her floor routine.
janiga was doooope
U go girl congratulations
Why does so few people comment on these videos???
Does anyone know Carly Patterson's floor music?

At 52:60, does anyone know what Tabitha's music was?? That is really cool!!!!
Tacks Sherbo I looked it up and it's called Blues for Klook by Eddy Louiss
Amy Brown Thank you!!! I'm going to see if I can find it somewhere.
Tacks Sherbo look on wikipedia
Mackenzie Rose I found it! I just typed in Blues for Klook right here on YT.

Courtney Kupets's floor routine was horrible. The music was terrible and the dance. Good flips though..,,
The crab walk 😂😂😂😂
Kupet’s 2004 floor routine was much better suited for NCAA competition lol.
back to times when 90% if girls were on hard diet and had eating disorder
TheLapinDoux back in the early 90’s they used to put the gymnasts height and weight on their name bar on national tv!
And little white girls thought it was okay to wear cornrows 🥴
Hey I'm the first one to comment! Cool!!i love ur channel! :)
The commentary is so annoying.
McCool and Kupets replaced by Janiga and Oshino...they would have beaten Romania and probably took more individual medals...that team made zero sense
The selection committee also should have replaced Mohini with Tricase

Kupets floor music was so cool it’s too bad she had zero dance or artistry talent to pull it off.
Elfi Schlegal was NEVER the best gymnast Canada has ever produced. BS as usual from Trautpig.
She was at that time
whatever happened to carly janiga?
