@Brian Mallia The 705 S3s are notably better than the new 600M MKIIs --both subjectively and objectively. Admittedly neither speaker is "perfect" but you are buying a better, more accurate and solidly put together speaker in the B&W in direct comparison to the Klipsch. We don't have any current plans to review the new 8000F MKII in the short term, but maybe that will change, I don't know. As for the Jubilee, I'm on the fence about reviewing them given their size and logistics.

Hi Andrew I one of your new subscribers. Let's talk about bowers and Wilkins 705s3. Now am a huge fan of bowers and Wilkins speakers I got the old DM 601 S3 since 2004 they are good but when you said decisions compare to PMC speakers twenty 21i your nail it because I was confused at the time between those two company brand. So easy I go for bowers and Wilkins 705s3 I love the style and carbon dome tweeter. So thinking to get one near Christmas.

Urgh you paired it with a $7,000 AUD Amp 😨😭 I was hoping it was $3,500 or less. The Marantz is $3,700.

I'm a long time B&W fan as well, but their pricing has kept me from buying another set. I get that they want to remain an "elite level" speaker brand and thus, keep their prices high, but I don't believe that what they charge equally correlates to the differences in sound you get, i.e, Kristi's take on the Lumina II vs the 705. I would LOVE to have B&Ws in my house for listening, but they have priced ME out of their audience. I know there are lots of people that can afford them, I'm just not one of them. The 802s will always have a place on my bucket list, but it's the part of my bucket list that likely won't ever be fulfilled, lol. As always, thanks for all the work you both put into these reviews, I can't wait to hear about the 805s and the Marantz Cinema 50! Thanks again!

Jason I appreciate you sharing and for being so honest. I hear ya. I was hoping the new 600 Anniversary Series would've been the perfect "entry-level" B&W but it was a let down. Hopefully the next gen will be better because B&W used to make really good, approachable speakers too!

good video. You know the amazing thing... the B&W 705 cost what the 805 used to cost 15yrs ago. The 805s are just insane expensive. My buddy just bought a pair of the PRO-Ject bookshelfs... very nice. BUUUT I still think my Quad S2 sound better than the Pro-Ject, and I still think they are the speaker to beat in approx 1000/pr range.

I think the Lumina 2 is also better looking. Did you try the B&W’s with a modestly priced amp like the Audiolab?

Hi Andrew and kristi. When i first got into this hobby, i used to buy all the Hi Fi Magazines i could find. They were mainly from England and the U.S. Both magazines only reviewed speakers from their own country. In Australia speakers were very expensive to buy, especially the British ones. Basically you could only choose Goodmans, Wharfdale, Quad Electrostatic, B&W from England. AR, KLH, JBL and Bose from the US. Now that most British speakers are made in China, many of them have become more affordable .
However, the quality of many of these speakers has diminished to when they were actually made in England, Just wondering, do you have any "Direct to Disc" records ?

Ok my question is. How does the 705S3 compare vs a pair of 805D3...considering the second hand market this makes it a very interesting question. Diamond tweeter in the 805d3 vs the new midrange from the 8..D4 series .
Andrew are you able to chime in on this?
I've been looking for a pair of 804D3s but now not sure if the 703s3 might he the better choice?

Andrew and Kristi, I so enjoy your reviews and always look forward to them. I was wondering about Andrew’s commitment regarding “low volume listening” on the 705 S3 speakers. I have the 705 Signature speakers powered by a Naim Uniti Star and feel the speakers are lacking unless I turn them up to levels that make my wife want to leave the room (which is really not that loud). On paper my speakers and yours appear to be nearly identical. I am wondering if the newer version is that much better/efficient or if I still need more power for low level listening.

I REALLY enjoyed the fact that you guys did blind listening tests! I think the pricing is wild, I have a spreadsheet with 3 way centers and when I made it originally 1 year ago you could get the HTM71 S2 for $1500 before the price hike to $2000 and the HTM71 S3 is $2500. Really makes me sad because the S2 was stretching my budget but the S3 is firmly outside of it once you consider I'd want 5 speakers (705, 704, htm71). Also I still miss the specs being visually shown, don't think I've forgot haha. Also gloss black is 🤢for me personally where's my black oak veneer!

Coming to this late but with all the discussion of cheaper alternatives I am surprised there’s no mention of the 706. There are very few reviews of the 706 s3 but the few I have read say it’s sonically very close to the 705 - with slightly more sparkle on the top end. Which is what you would expect from an almost identical cabinet and mid/bass driver - the difference being the tweeter on top (which btw is still ‘decoupled’ it’s just that it’s not ‘on top’ in the 706 version). So isn’t the 706 the ‘budget’ alternative to the 705?

Going by the comments at the end of the video, that’s the whole idea of blind testing. In my opinion is you trying to catch the people out that are doing the blind testing if you throw them a curveball and they really don’t know what they’re listening to and you’ve confused them and now they’re not sure which is which must throw a bit of a spanner in the works as in two more why one piece of equipment Cost a lot more than another. I must admit I do like the piano black Bowers and Wilkins on speaker they look awesome. Never as long as I draw breath will be able to afford a bear but great video as always. Hi guys, I just pick up a pair of 705 S2 for $2635. Today I’m waiting for a Hegel 190, to pair with these beautiful speakers. I want to thank you for reviewing the B&WS3. The 190Hegel I was also able to get a great price from Hegel for $3200. They just drop the price this month $1100 on that amplifier. Andrew, I just had a chance to finish up watching the whole review. I’d like to tell you I am a huge fan and like you of B&W since 1986. I bought my first pair of DM sevens , that same year I also picked up a pair of metric ones. I still have both sets of speakers along with my Nakamichi equipment. This was awesome to watch, nice work Andrew and Kristi.
Just a thought. Is it possible that your new listening room is more ‘forgiving’ of brighter or more energetic speakers than your previous space, and that’s part of the reason you really liked these? Either way, I’m glad you did.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

You could make that argument. This room measures differently as all rooms will. That said, I don't believe "forgiving" is the right word. More balanced? Yes. The issue in our old space contrary to most people's assumptions was never brightness. The old room was bass loading - something I was aware of and took into account in all of our reviews. I am confident in saying the room was NOT the issue with the 600 series. We didn't like it in our old home and we didn't like it here in the new space. It has a smile like curve to its response no matter what room you put it in.

I actually like the 704 s2 speakers. They are slim towers that take up less area space than most bookshelves with stands. I compared them to the 705s2 and immediately heard a huge difference between the towers. I could only detect a slight difference when going from the 704s2 to 702s2. But the size and WAF factor are what I liked the best. The big question is What's the difference between s2 vs s3 because you can get a massive discount on the s2 models right now.

@Andrew Robinson - my audio brother. That review... It wowed me a lot. Your approach is at another level. I feel your message, Bowers and Wilkins will feel it too. I hope you all (Robinsons&BowersWilkins ;)) will enjoy many following reviews together. Because you and Kristi are the best on YT/audio and B&W produces one of the greatest, and refinement products on the market. That is much bigger than one 600-whatever speaker. Nobody cares about them.
One technical thing - I had CM6 s2 which is pre-previous to 705 s2. I got them without org. stands. They were great. After a while, I purchased B&W stands (for your speakers: FS-700 S3). Unexpectedly, they made a substantial sonic difference and this is why: The stands have a dedicated space for ballast to increase the weight of the whole column (speaker+stand). You can fill them with sand, but it will not change much. You need to use heavier material. I used micro lead balls. My single CM6 s2 with filled stand weighed more than CM9 s2, I got 27 kg/ 61 lbs. What has changed? The sound was crispy and clear. The Bass became super punchy. The midrange was better, more realistic, and better tone + smack-effect. I got +15% better speakers after upgrading the stands, which is a lot. I don't use bookshelf column for years, but I will never get rid of that balast. A weght improves the stiffness and gives loudspeakers better control in the column. No questions about that. Worht of trying, youll _not_ regred. You can blind test it.

Seriously, putting a B&W at the end of a Denon or Technics amp? you're in for a touch of sibilance, edged in the highs. A good starting point for these would be a Naim Supernait 3, or a Cambridge Edge Integrated minimum. You need serious current and very well built power transformer to get these to sing. I have been using these on a Naim 200 DR/202 Pre for a month now. Also tried them on the new Rega Elicit amp. Compared with the B&W PM1, it's just night and day, B&W house sound changed dramatically between the two speakers, these do rocks, providing again you get proper amplification for them. Trust me, that very last bass notes and bit of extension you mentioned lacking, is definitely there

If anyone still watches this channel, I would like your opinions, the opinion of the author is also welcome. I think Andrew Robinson is the only one who rated the sound great for listening at low volume, everything else says they are not ok for listening at low volume. I'm really on the verge of buying these 705 S3, I don't have the possibility of a test, but listening at low volume is important to me, because I can't always disturb the neighbors 🙂 What is your opinion and of course, thanks in advance. PS: Is the quality of listening at low volume highly dependent on the power of the amplifier? What should be the minimum power of the amplifier for 705 S3? What the manufacturers write i.e. 15-30W, seems to me to be more marketing so that they can sell more...
